We talked with a Notre Dame professor about why candidates like Carly Fiorina, Donald Trump and Ben Carson have such an appeal in American politics even though they aren’t politicians.
Ben Carson Believes #BlackLivesMatters Is A Distraction Dividing America Good luck becoming POTUS with THIS kind of attitude… Via ThinkProgress Since the deaths of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Eric Garner in New York, Trayvon Martin in Florida, and countless others, “Black Lives Matter” has become a rallying call for a group of Americans unfairly targeted by police. Taking the message from protests to politicians, the movement has mounted pressure on 2016 presidential candidates to recognize the need for policies to address the disproportionate risk black Americans face of death in the hands of police. But not all candidates are receptive to that message. On Friday, Ben Carson, the only African American candidate from either party vying for the presidency, spoke at a conference organized by black conservative group Freedom’s Journal Institute (FJI) and titled “In Defense of Life: Why All Lives Matter.” Candidates on both the left and right have been criticized for their declaration of those words — “All Lives Matter” — diminishing the goals of the Black Lives Matter movement, which is asking people to recognize that black lives are devalued by our criminal justice system. Ben Carson, however, told ThinkProgress this week he sees the whole movement as divisive. “We need to talk about what the real issues are and not get caught up in silliness like this matters or that matters,” he said at a rally to defund Planned Parenthood Tuesday outside the U.S. Capitol, where protesters held signs reading “Unborn Lives Matter.” “Of course all lives matter. I don’t want to get into it, it’s so silly,” he continued, laughing to himself. “Black lives are part of all lives, right? When we’re talking about a culture of life, then we ought to be talking about a culture of life and not allow ourselves to get caught up in all the divisive rhetoric and terminology and political correctness. It’s the reason we can’t make any progress as a society.” Way to go “brotha” we appreciate you reppin’ for your people…SMFH Image via AP
Teen Posts Craigslist Ad Seeking To Rent Family For Bday An incredible 19-year-old Denver woman is turning to Craigslist for an unusual, and heartfelt request. Via The Denver Channel : Natalie Carson said she grew up in foster care and was never adopted. She posted an ad on Craigslist in hopes of finding a family to spend time with her on her birthday. It’s a request that may seem so simple, but Carson says it will help make a usually difficult day, special. “It’s something that I’ve never really had. Of course, I’ve had birthdays, but they haven’t been good,” she said. “Usually every birthday is really painful and hard.” Carson said she was a baby when she was first placed in foster care in Colorado. She was quickly adopted and moved with her adoptive family to Georgia. “They were abusing me and so I got placed back into foster care when I was 12,” Carson said. At 18, she aged out of the system. On her own for the first time, Carson took a bus back to Colorado. “I really didn’t know anything, but I knew I was born here,” she said. 7NEWS looked further into this cycle and found that last year in Colorado, more than 200 teens aged out of foster care, according to the Department of Human Services. “There’s something more, you know, than just me because there’s a million more of me,” Carson said. Experts tell 7NEWS it’s not unusual for birthdays, graduations, and holidays to be difficult for youth without families. Carson said she found support at Urban Peak, a Denver shelter that helps young people experiencing homelessness. The student was able to get her GED and is now working and attending college with a focus on computer science. As for the heartfelt ad on Craigslist, Carson said she didn’t think anyone would answer — but turns out several people have already reached out to her. “It felt good I was happy, and I’ve been talking to one family in particular,” she said. Carson has hope that she’ll finally have the birthday she’s always wanted. “I felt like having one day where it’s OK — this is about me and it’s my birthday,” Carson said. “I don’t have this big elaborate plan or anything, I just wanted it to be good.” On Friday, Natalie said she’s grateful for an outpouring of support but overwhelmed by a flood of emails as her story has received international news coverage. She’s talking with people who have offered to help make her birthday special. Now she’s asking others who want to help to instead support other foster care children or organizations that aid foster kids. We hope this young lady gets the birthday party she deserves!
When it comes to controversial comments Jeremy Renner recently made about Black Widow, the actor appeared opposite Conan O’Brien last night and summed up his feelings on the flap thusly: #SorryNotSorry. Jeremy Renner Takes Back Black Widow Apology As part of his seemingly never-ending press tour for Avengers: Age of Ultron last month, Renner was interviewed alongside co-star Chris Evans and asked about the fact that Black Widow has been romantically linked to FOUR Avengers. “She’s a slut,” Renner joked in response. But the Internet didn’t find this comment especially funny, prompting Renner to issue a half-hearted apology soon afterward. “I am sorry that this tasteless joke about a fictional character offended anyone,” Renner said. “It was not meant to be serious in any way. Just poking fun during an exhausting and tedious press tour.” Last night, meanwhile, Renner was once again asked about the joke and didn’t even attempt a mea culpa this time around. “I was talking about a fictional character and fictional behavior,” Renner reasoned. “Conan, if you slept with four of the six Avengers – no matter how much fun you had – you’d be a slut. “Just saying. I’d be a slut.” Renner and Evans weren’t the only Avengers to run into some problems while promoting the Avengers sequel. After growing sick of questions about his personal life, Robert Downey Jr. walked out of a Q&A with a nosy reporter a couple weeks ago. View Slideshow: 21 Smoldering Superheroes on the Big Screen
Yesterday, retired brain surgeon Ben Carson announced his 2016 run for the GOP presidential nomination. Today, another controversial figure from the private sector has thrown her hat into the ring, and like Carson, she differs from the typical Republican nominee in many ways, but might ironically suffer in the primaries due to her old-guard views on several important issues. Carly Fiorina is best known for her tenure as CEO of Hewlett-Packard and her 2010 senate campaign, both of which ended badly. Even so, Fiorina believes she has the necessary name recognition and respect from her fellow Republicans to have a real chance in an already-crowded field of nominees. “Yes, I am running,” Fiorina said today during an appearance on Good Morning America. “I think I’m the best person for the job because I understand how the economy actually works.” “I understand the world; who’s in it.” Often described as one of the worst tech CEOs of all time thanks to the disastrous HP-Compaq merger that she spearheaded in 2005, Fiorina entered politics after being forced to resign from by the board at HP. She went on to work with John McCain during his 2008 presidential run and even addressed the RNC that same year. Fiorina quickly developed a loyal following among conservative Republicans, but was soundly defeated when she attempted to unseat California Senator Barbara Boxer in 2010. “She’s a very talented candidate and connects well with voters,” says Marty Wilson said, a political adviser who managed Fiorina’s senate campaign. “The problem is after 2010, she was no longer a candidate. So mail lists and email lists tend to atrophy when they’re not in use.” As with Carson, Fiorina’s lack of political experience could prove to be a major liability, but both candidates are likely hoping that voters will share their belief that a Washington outsider is just what the White House needs. Could we have two Black presidents in a row? Dr. Ben Carson A Potential Presidential Candidate Dr. Ben Carson, a retired neurosurgeon and conservative political figure, just might be a contender for the 2016 Presidential race. Apparently Dr. Carson wowed a conservative crowd at a Republican Club meeting recently and they fervently urged him to put his bid in. Via PageSix : We’re two years away from the next election for President of the United States, but the race is already heating up. Among the contenders: Dr. Ben Carson, who gave it good to President Obama at last year’s National Prayer Breakfast — and who had more digs for the commander in chief last Wednesday at the Women’s National Republican Club on West 51st Street. “People say to me, ‘Dr. Carson, you’d make a great president, but Obama has ruined it for another black candidate.’ I say, ‘He’s half-white, so I guess he ruined it for them, too.’ ” Carson, who retired as director of pediatric neurosurgery at John Hopkins Hospital, gave a speech, answered questions from a crowd of about 300 and signed copies of his sixth book, “One Nation: What We Can All Do To Save America’s Future.” “A PBS reporter asked me, ‘How come you don’t talk more about race?’ I said, ‘Because I’m a neurosurgeon. When I open up a patient’s skull, I’m working on what makes him or her a human being — not his skin. ’” Carson also had quips on several other subjects, including legalizing marijuana (“Data show it reduces IQ. We have enough stupid people. We don’t need to create more of them.”) and unions (“They will strangle the goose that lays the golden egg for that last egg.”). The partisan crowd was hanging on every word, and urging Carson to run for president. Well he certainly seems to pander well to Republican views. Do you think he has a chance?
