Bret Michaels Performs On ‘American Idol’

Recovering rock star takes the stage with Casey James. By Josh Wigler Bret Michaels on the ‘American Idol’ Finale May 26 Photo: FOX After suffering a subarachnoid brain hemorrhage in April, discovering a hole in his heart earlier this month and beating out Holly Robinson Peete on “The Celebrity Apprentice” on Sunday, one would think Bret Michaels had gone through enough over the past several weeks. Not so, apparently, as the Poison frontman surprised the masses yet again by appearing on Wednesday night’s (May 26) “American Idol” season-nine finale for an inspiring and rocking musical performance. The performance began as third-place finisher Casey James took the stage, slowly strumming his rendition of “Every Rose Has Its Thorn.” Audience anticipation quickly built to a fever pitch as it dawned on the Nokia Theatre crowd and the folks at home that Michaels was about to grace the stage. Sure enough, a healthy-looking Michaels appeared with guitar in hand, gradually making his way to stand side-by-side with the clearly enthused James. In light of Michaels’ recent health scares, the lyrics to “Every Rose” suddenly took on new meaning: “Though its been awhile now/ I can still feel so much pain/ Like a knife that cuts you, the wound heals/ But the scar, that scar remains.” But Michaels wasn’t dwelling on any scars of his own. Strumming along and singing as loudly and proudly as ever before, the rocking Poison musician more than held his own on the “American Idol” stage. In a night already filled with many unforgettable performances, Michaels’ appearance was undoubtedly one of the evening’s most powerful and uplifting moments. Casey James’ ‘American Idol’ Exit Not A Surprise, Experts Say

‘The writing was on the wall for Casey since last week’s results show,’ declared MTV News’ Jim Cantiello. By Gil Kaufman Casey James Photo: FOX You didn’t need to be a weatherman to know which way the wind was blowing for Casey James on Wednesday night. With the judges practically placing the crown on Lee DeWyze’s head the previous evening and Crystal Bowersox riding a season-long wave of hype and good cheer, James seemed destined to be the odd man out. Our experts called it , and on Thursday morning, they were feeling bullish about being right and predicting the first mixed-gender finale in four seasons. “The writing was on the wall for Casey since last week’s results show,” declared MTV News’ Jim Cantiello. “He knew he had no chance going up against Crystal ‘Early Fave’ Bowersox and Lee ‘Chosen One’ DeWyze, and if he didn’t, he should have realized he was being set up to fail with Kara and Randy’s song choice. As soon as he heard the words ‘ “Daughters” by John Mayer’ he needed to dig deep and figure out a way to wow the judges and the viewers with his personal choice.” Instead, Cantiello noted, James chose an obscure song by little-known singer Eric Hutchinson that left “even less impact than Mayer’s sleepy tune.” If nothing else, Jim appreciated Casey’s honesty when he deviated from heaping praise on the judges like Crystal and Lee did and told host Ryan Seacrest that not all of their critiques were useful. Our other expert, MJ Santilli of “Idol” fan site MJsbigblog.com , also called Casey’s ouster and agreed that it was expected after James submarined himself with the Hutchinson pick. “No way that boring Eric Hutchinson song was going to propel him into the finals,” she said. “If he’d picked something bluesy and upbeat, it would have complemented the ballad Kara and Randy gave him. But, maybe there was nothing Casey could do to dodge the bus that was coming for him. The producers were gunning for a Crystal/Lee final, and they made sure they got it. Crystal and Lee got better judges’ songs, performance order spots, lighting and stage sets. Casey knew he was going home.” Santilli noted that the message James posted to fans on his Facebook page earlier in the day had a whiff of a goodbye to it, and his calm demeanor when getting the news on the show seemed to indicate he sensed his fate. “Maybe Crystal and Lee won the night, but Casey created one of the sweetest moments of season nine when he picked up that little girl during his ‘Daughters’ sing-out,” she said of the audience member James sat on his knee and sang to during his curtain call. ‘American Idol’ Experts Predict Crystal Bowersox/ Lee DeWyze Showdown

If the judges have their way, Casey James is going home this week. By Gil Kaufman Crystal Bowersox on “American Idol” Tuesday Photo: FOX They’ve said it before, but this time our “American Idol” experts really mean it: This is the week Casey James is riding off into the sunset, paving the way for the long-expected showdown in next week’s “Idol” finale between Crystal Bowersox and Lee DeWyze. “Simon Cowell and company have been pushing for a Lee/Crystal finale since week one, and it looks as though they’ll be getting that come results-show time,” MTV News’ resident “Idol” expert Jim Cantiello predicted. “Casey did nothing to convince America that he deserved to break up the MamaSox and DeWyze showdown. Rewind to a year ago, where Kris Allen was expected to sing his swan song but instead showed up armed with brilliance.” Cantiello said Casey squandered his chance to gain ground after landing the opening slot on Tuesday night’s show by picking a song from obscure singer Eric Hutchinson, “OK, It’s Alright With Me.” He was then saddled with a lackluster judges’ pick in John Mayer’s “Daughters.” “Crystal’s got the fanbase; Lee’s got the momentum,” Cantiello said. “Casey’s got … the opportunity to pack his bags. Mr. James, you are no match for the judges’ pimping. Sorry. It’s been fun.” Our other expert, MJ Santilli of MJsBigBlog.com , couldn’t agree more, though she added that it might just be time to crown DeWyze the champ right now after his bravura performance of the oft-sung “Idol” chestnut “Hallelujah,” by Leonard Cohen. “Wow. Simon Cowell manufactured quite the moment for Lee, with the choir, and the horns and strings,” she said of the dramatic show-closing performance by DeWyze, the former paint-store clerk and high school rabble-rouser . “He also made sure the song had the proper ‘climax’ as he called it,” Santilli said.

American Idol Recap: Go Home, Casey James!

We don’t mean to be harsh with our headline. At least not too harsh. But this lackluster season of American Idol can at least be redeemed by the fact that next week’s finale will be one of the hardest to gauge in show history. If viewers do the right thing and vote out Casey James tonight, that is. Kara’s crush simply doesn’t have the versatility needed come out on top. He underwhelmed last night with both “OK, It’s Alright With Me” (his selection) and John Mayer’s “Daughters” (the judge’s choice for him) and deserves to be eliminated. This would leave it to Crystal Bowersox and Lee DeWyze , two finalists that should be neck-and-neck after their most recent performances. DeWyze put on the best of the evening, and one of the best of the season, with “Hallejulah.” He’s been coming on strong over the last few weeks, while Crystal hasn’t been able to match the magic of last month’s ” People Get Ready .” Below, we rank the six songs played throughout the hour: Lee DeWyze, Hallelujah Crystal Bowersox, Maybe I’m Amazed Lee DeWyze, Simple Man Crystal Bowersox, Come to My Window Casey James, Daughters Casey James, OK, It’s Alright With Me Which performance was your favorite? And is there any chance Casey upsets one of these two and advances to next week’s finale?

‘American Idol’ Experts: Michael Lynche Done In By Song Selection

They’d predicted Casey James’ ouster first, but our superfans weren’t shocked to see Big Mike go. By Gil Kaufman Michael Lynche on “American Idol” Wednesday Photo: FOX In one of the toughest weeks to call yet, MTV News’ go-to “American Idol” experts were thrown for a loop by Wednesday night’s elimination. They both bet on the demise of cougar-bait cowboy Casey James , who toyed with self-parody with his ode to mother lovers, “Mrs. Robinson.” But it was brawny Michael Lynche who got the boot . On the one hand, MJ Santilli, webmaster of the “Idol” fan site MJsBigBlog.com , was not surprised Lynche was eliminated, only that he was still around. “Actually, it’s pretty amazing how long he stuck around, considering he was originally slated to go out in ninth place,” she said, noting that the judges were not impressed with his cover of Michael Jackson’s “Will You Be There,” and, apparently, neither were viewers. “Casey James’ fanbase came through for him this week, and he may have caught the attention of some casual fans who appreciated his solid performance of ‘Mrs. Robinson,’ ” she said, noting that it was better than Lee Dewyze’s tepid “Kiss From a Rose.” “Casey’s performance was better than the judges acknowledged — or barely acknowledged, as they were too busy teasing Kara and making jokes about the song’s theme — a younger man seducing an older woman,” Santilli said. “Who knows? Maybe the song resonated with more than a few women of a ‘certain age.’ ” For MTV News’ “Idol” expert Jim Cantiello , Lynche’s elimination was like a bad movie flashback. “It was fitting that Big Mike was the lowest vote-getter for the second time this season during a week that felt like d

Movieline Handicapping: Who Should Buy the Joaquin Phoenix Documentary?

Among the hundreds of titles available to distributors at this year’s Cannes Film Festival marketplace, only one wields the cachet of being a verite glimpse at an American actor’s performance-art public meltdown. But despite everything promised by the Casey Affleck-directed mock-doc I’m Still Here: The Lost Year of Joaquin Phoenix , prospective buyers remain hesitant to gamble on the project. That doesn’t mean it won’t sell, though. After the jump, let’s have a look at five adventurous-enough distributors who might be in the running for Phoenix’s pholly.

‘American Idol’ Report Card: Who Nailed Shania Twain Week?

No one flunked outright, but Casey James was the only contestant to impress us much. By Eric Ditzian Shania Twain poses with the “American Idol” Top 6 Photo: FOX Oh, you crazy “American Idol” kids! We’d been worried all day for you. Was the songbook of ’90s country queen Shania Twain the type of “Idol” classroom material that would sink every single one of you? Were we in for a live performance on Tuesday night that would have us harkening back to those ear-bleedingly awful top-24 shows in late February? No and no. Collectively, this was the finest group of performances of the year, and we’re pleased to announce that for the first time, not one contestant notched a failing grade on our weekly “Idol” report. That doesn’t mean we’ve got a bunch of honor students on our hands. In fact, the ranks of the Average Idols have swelled — which is to say that while no one crashed and burned, almost no one soared. Considering how worried we were, though, let’s just be happy with how the whole thing turned out. On to the grades! Excellent Casey James : On Tuesday afternoon, we went ahead and suggested Casey sing “You’re Still the One,” and when Lee went first and busted out that tune, we were worried for Goldilocks. Would he once again try on his rocker hat, even though it has clearly not been fitting for weeks? Nope! Casey has learned his lesson well, because he went slow and acoustic with “Don’t.” From “Heaven” to “Jealous Guy” to last night’s cover, Casey’s wheelhouse really is the smoldering ballad. We think he understands that now. Good Lee Dewyze : One of the hardest things to do on “Idol” is sustain momentum, to follow up one killer performance with another and keep the judges’ praise — those American votes — coming. That Dewyze has followed up last week’s first-rate take on the “Boxer” with a fine, contemporary cover of “You’re Still the One” is cause for applause (even if we did think that song was a better fit for Casey James). The kid has found his niche with an acoustic-guitar-driven, lite indie-rock sound. It’s working well for him. Mike Lynche : While Big Mike’s rendition of “It Only Hurts When I’m Breathing” didn’t go as far in an R&B direction as we might have hoped, at least he indulged that side of his artistic personality. It was no “This Woman’s Work,” but we’ll take it. For the sake of Mike’s future, let’s hope he’s finally ditched that weak-sauce indie-rocker shtick and embraced his R&B soul. Last night’s performance was hardly the stuff of Luther Vandross, as Randy Jackson and Simon Cowell maintained, but it’s a comparison that Mike should take to heart. Average Crystal Bowersox : Remember what we were saying just before about sustaining momentum? It ain’t easy! And perhaps it’s asking a little much to expect MamaSox to equal her best-of-the-season performance last week during “People Get Ready.” But actually, we feel kind of guilty. We suggested Crystal perform “No One Needs to Know Right Now,” and that’s exactly what she did. Unfortunately, she didn’t follow our advice to ditch the song’s country flavor. We warned that Tuesday night would be all about the arrangement. On this front, Bowersox didn’t make the grade. Aaron Kelly : You could see it in Kelly’s eyes: He knew before he even stepped onto the stage that he’s in trouble this week. And after a so-so performance of “You’ve Got a Way,” you could really see that the kid doesn’t want to go home. Who could blame him? Last night, Kelly was as strong as he’s been in the competition, but “Idol” is just that, a competition. If there’s any justice in the reality-show universe, he’ll not only land in the bottom three; this will be the end of the line for this sweet 17-year-old. Siobhan Magnus : We have an idea what Siobhan was thinking when she decided to tramp around the “Idol” auditorium during “Any Man of Mine,” from stage to crowd to stairs and back again: Engage the audience! Have some fun! Her heart may have been in the right place, but what happened in the moment was a young singer struggling to breathe, walk and sing all at the same time. She simply did not look comfortable, and it showed — both on her face and in her pitch. The judges seemed to think Siobhan was back, baby! We have a feeling she’s headed to the bottom three. How would you rate last night’s “Idol” performances? Share your grades in the comments.
