Legacy: A Reflection On Voguing, From Ball Culture To Teyana Taylor’s Music Video

Originally posted here:

Source: Catherine McGann / Getty Over the past few months, Teyana Taylor has been dropping music videos left and right for songs off her  K.T.S.E. album. On Wednesday, “WTP” was the latest visual released, and it was filled with ball culture celebration.   Balls have been organized by LGBTQ people of color for decades now, and they’re continuing to get more recognition thanks to shows like Pose on FX and My House on Viceland. During a ball, individuals or “houses” (a person’s adopted family) can compete in multiple categories, oftentimes for a cash prize, a trophy and maybe most importantly, “legendary” status. There are dozens of categories participants can walk in, but some of the most important ones fall under titles like Butch Queen (usually gay or queer men), Femme Queen (usually trans women or femmes), and of course voguing.   Voguing alone can be broken down into the new way and the old way of dancing. The old way of voguing reached the national spotlight thanks to the 1990 movie Paris is Burning,  and one of its main stars was Willi Ninja.    Willi’s angular, picturesque and precise style of voguing would go on to influence dancers around the world, and it even landed him appearances in music videos like Janet Jackson ‘s “Alright” and “Escapade.” The old way of voguing received an even bigger spotlight when Madonna released her music video for “Vogue” in 1990. Though the music video has been met with  more critical eyes over the years, icons like Luis Xtravaganza  and  Jose Gutierez Xtravaganza  represented for vogue culture in the wildly popular video.   As the years progressed, voguing started to evolve into a new way that many people are familiar with today. This style involves more acrobatic moves and difficult executions such as “duck walks,” “dips” or “death drops.” Masters like Dashaun Wesley,  who appeared in Teyana Taylor’s video, have help carry on this voguing tradition.   Now, with more light being shined on LGBTQ communities of color, voguing has had another resurgence in popular media. Legendary voguers like Leiomy are showing off their skills in Nike commercials…   Even hip hop has been bitten by the vogue bug with Q-Tip featuring ball culture in the music video for his song with Demi Lovato  “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart.”   Dancer-singers like FKA Twigs have also kept voguing alive by taking it out of its traditional ballroom setting and placing it on the far edges of the world. FKA’s “Glass & Patron” definitely repped for the technique…   But no matter how far voguing or ball culture goes, it will forever be the product of queer imagination. It’s dedicated LGBTQ community of color will continue to exemplify those who dared to live, create and of course, have fun.

Kevin Durant Opens Facility In Maryland To Help Kids Through College

Here is the original post:

Source: The Washington Post / Getty Kevin Durant is, without doubt, one of the NBA’s most electrifying players and a solid cog in the high-powered Golden State Warriors offense. But like other youth from his home state of Maryland, Durant wasn’t gifted with endless riches to go to the next level scholastically and now, he’s using his platform to assist others with that journey via the new Durant Center facility in Prince George’s County.  The Washington Post writes : About two years ago, Durant was looking for ways to widen his philanthropic portfolio. He had, a year earlier, signed a two-year contract with Golden State worth about $54 million. His foundation had overseen the construction of parks and basketball courts throughout the United States, including some in the Washington area. But now he wanted something more far-reaching, so he attended a conference for start-up companies and met representatives for College Track, a company that uses a 10-year plan to shepherd students from their early teenage years through college graduation. Before long, Durant found himself visiting a center in Oakland, Calif., discussing how to bring something like that to Washington while paying attention to that facility’s students. “He was interested in understanding their journey and what types of services we provided that really change their trajectory,” said Elissa Salas, College Track’s chief executive. The organization, whose collaboration with Durant would lead to its first site on the East Coast, considered property in the District — Salas said a second College Track location will open this autumn in Congress Heights in Southeast D.C. and a third is in the early planning stages — but that Durant was adamant Prince George’s County seemed right. 15 Things That Happened 20 Years Ago And Changed Life As We Knew It

Read this article:

Source: NBC / Getty 1999 was huge year for lots of people, for various reasons. Most Americans were losing their s***, figuratively and literally, over the idea that the world would end in the year 2000 . Either that or robots would take over and we would be their servants — which is kind of true when you think about our addictions to cell phones these days. It’s still hard to believe that ’99 was 20 years ago though. The hashtag #ItsBeen20YearsSince proves that time is flying by and things are changing, quickly. #ItsBeen20YearsSince we were really partying like it was 1999. — Catie Larson (@CatieLarson) January 23, 2019 #ItsBeen20YearsSince I checked out that library book and never returned it. pic.twitter.com/O644eaKaA0 — Billie (@Billie_Jean00) January 23, 2019 Millennials we’re getting old guys.  In the spirit of nostalgia, hit the flip to check out things that happened in 1999 that changed life as we knew it.

Pale Politics: This Week’s Best Clapbacks To Ignant White People

Read the original:

Source: Splash / Splash News The oppressive, cruel, and occasionally demonic attributes of Whiteness came out in full-force this week thanks to well…White people. The most viral moment involved an indigenous elder, Nathan Phillips , who had to stand inches away from the moist MAGA breath of a bratty teen. According to Today , Phillips was on the grounds of the Lincoln Memorial for the Indigenous People’s March. Meanwhile, the March For Life anti-abortion rally was going on around the same time, and it was full of MAGA hat teens from the Covington Catholic High School in Kentucky. Nick Sandmann was the teen who confronted Phillips face-to-face in the now viral video. According to him, some Black Hebrew Israelites were taunting him and his classmates before the confrontation with Phillips took place. The high school students tried to drown out the Hebrew Israelites with school chants, but naturally that didn’t ease tensions. So according to CNN , Phillips stood between the students and the Hebrew Israelites, banging his drum and singing a Native American protest song. According to Phillips, this is when Sandmann stepped in his face and wouldn’t let him move. Phillips says Sandmann’s classmates proceeded to mock his song, and he even said he heard teens yelling “build that wall.” You can watch the video for yourself below.   The incident was, once again, another symbol of White oppression. It wasn’t just Phillips against Sandmann, it was a small indigenous group against a crowd of young White MAGA supporters. White teens seized the opportunity to take up space on land that was acquired with the onslaught of indigenous people. The Make America Great Again hats were the cherry on top for how White people can flaunt their dominance even if they’re not consciously doing so. Thus, Phillip’s only form of defense and integrity in the moment was to continue banging his drum and singing his protest song. A subtle clapback, yet powerful one. Hit the next pages to peep some more noteworthy (and hilarious) clapbacks to the ignant White folks.

A Lil’ Positivity: Kevin Durant Is Opening An Education Center To Help Low-Income Students Prepare For College

Source: Christian Petersen / Getty KD Opens Education Center To Help Low-Income Students Prepare For College According to Sports Illustrated , NBA Superstar Kevin Durant is using his platform in a major way, by opening an education center to help low-income students prepare for college. KD partnered with College Track organization to establish the Durant Center Prince George’s County, Maryland to help teens better their future by assisting them in obtaining a college degree. The center will be located in Durant’s hometown of Suitland, Maryland and will focus on providing lower-income students with the assistance needed to start and finish their college education. According to College Track’s website, their mission is to “empower students from underserved communities to graduate from college. By helping our students maximize the value of their college degree—minimize student loan debt, secure internships, and limit the need to work while in college—we prepare today’s youth to succeed in the 21st-century economy.” The initiative began last year after Durant donated approximately $10 million to start construction on the building and the project. The Durant Center will be accessible to all students in the Washington D.C. metropolitan and will be College Track’s first establishment on the East Coast.

F**k Them Kids: Racist Soup Cookies Of Covington Catholic High School Say Wearing Blackface Is “School Spirit”

Source: Alex Wong / Getty Covington Catholic High School Students Defend Racist Blackface Throw the entire Covington Catholic High School in the trash and set it on fire. It should come as no surprise that Nick Sandmann and his a-hole cronies who jeered and mocked Native American elder Nathan Phillips are getting the royal treatment from not only right-wing cable news, but also from 1600 FUBAR Ave. in Washington, D.C. EXCLUSIVE on the new #LauraIngrahamPodcast — the Covington Catholic students threatened by the leftist internet mob will be meeting with @realDonaldTrump at the White House as early as tomorrow. @iTunes @PodcastOne — Laura Ingraham (@IngrahamAngle) January 22, 2019 Looking like Nick Sandman & Covington Catholic students were treated unfairly with early judgements proving out to be false – smeared by media. Not good, but making big comeback! “New footage shows that media was wrong about teen’s encounter with Native American” @TuckerCarlson — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) January 22, 2019 Nick Sandmann and the students of Covington have become symbols of Fake News and how evil it can be. They have captivated the attention of the world, and I know they will use it for the good – maybe even to bring people together. It started off unpleasant, but can end in a dream! — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) January 22, 2019 It appears that the school and the kids’ parents are putting their sons out on the trail to do some incredibly insulting PR work in conservative spaces like Trump’s favorite morning show, Fox & Friends . According to The Daily Beast , senior Sam Schroder asked about wearing Blackface, peep his reply: “Five years ago, there was a pep rally where one of the members of the school body appeared to have blackface on. People have even asked you to explain that. How do you explain that?” Schroder, wearing a white button-down shirt and a blue striped tie, said: “I just explain it as showing school spirit. We have many themes. Like nerd, business, whiteout, blueout, blackout—as you’ve seen in the video. Ever since I’ve gone to CovCath, we haven’t been able to wear black paint because of the video, but I know the kids meant nothing by it, it’s just showing school spirit.” Steve Doocy asks a CovCath kid about others wearing blackface at basketball games, and he says since he’s been there “we haven’t been able to wear black paint because of the video, but I know the kids meant nothing by it, it’s just showing school spirit.” pic.twitter.com/rbuO5CKIts — Bobby Lewis (@revrrlewis) January 23, 2019 Blackface is as much about school spirit as KKK hoods are for keeping warm during negro-dragging horseback rides on a bitter cold night. FOH, cr-…soup cookie. We highly suggest you read a very insightful Newsone piece about how these kids are being treated versus how Black kids who are considered “threats” are treated.

Congrats: Draymond Green Is Engaged To Former Basketball Wives Star Hazel Renee

Source: Derrick Salters/WENN.com / WENN Warriors’ Draymond Green Engaged To Girlfriend Hazel Renee Warriors power forward Draymond Green probably isn’t too happy with his coach right now, but the reason has nothing to do with basketball. The baller reportedly popped the question to his girlfriend and former Basketball Wives star Hazel Renee, but how the world found out about the news is just as exciting as their engagement news itself. After a pre-game practice, Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr revealed to reporters, “The time’s been great. A nice change of pace during the middle of the season, especially in mid-January. Beautiful weather here, and a lot of guys have brought family members. Draymond got engaged. A lot of great stuff.” Rumblings of Draymond dating Hazel first sufaced back in October of 2017 and at that time, Green had to dispel rumors that he was allegedly cheated on his baby mama-to-be with her. But whatever their relationship status was at the time, it looks like things are going strong now. Neither Draymond nor Hazel has confirmed or addressed Steve Kerr’s statement about their engagement–but there’s a pretty good chance the guy knows what he’s talking about. Congrats to the happy couple!

Vinny Guadagnino to Kim Kardashian: Help Me Get The Situation Out of Jail!

As you’ve likely heard by now, Mike Sorrentino reported to prison this week to begin serving an eight-month sentence for tax fraud. As we reported earlier, there’s a good chance that Mike will qualify for early release, and the fact that The Situation is sober will likely help his standing with the parole board. But even with his sobriety, community service and celebrity status in his favor, Mike will still be cooling his heels in the slammer for several months. Unless, of course, he benefits from some A-list intervention. In recent months, Kim Kardashian has worked with the Trump administration to gain presidential pardons for non-violent offenders serving long sentences. Mike isn’t exactly Alice Marie Johnson , who was serving a life sentence before Kim intervened, but at the moment, he’s probably not too thrilled with his … situation (sorry). Fortunately, Sorrentino has friends in high places, and they’re doing everything they can to see that he’s sprung earlier. Unfortunately, there’s not much they can do other than beg Kim Kardashian for help. Vinny Guadagnino: Free The Sitch “I heard he’s doing great in there,” Guadagnino told TMZ this week when asked about Mike. “He was never like really nervous about it. “So I was praying, I’m like, ‘Oh god I hope once he’s in there, it’s okay.’ But [his wife] Lauren told us that he’s doing great.” Yes, Vin seems optimistic about Mike’s ability to serve his time and come out a better man. “He’s going to be alright. He’s so strong mentally from like his recovery process that it’s working out for him now in jail,” Vinny added. “Mike’s the type of guy where he looks for the positive in every situation. I can picture him in there, watching TV, working out.” So all-in-all things aren’t as terrible as they seem. But that doesn’t mean Mike wouldn’t welcome a little help from Kim K: “Mike is an amazing person,” Vin said when asked to make a direct appeal to Kim. “To me, he’s completely reformed—he’s a great member of society. “He preaches to kids that have addictions, he’s a big advocate and evangelist for recovery,” Vin added. “He’d be better off out here, helping people. Kim, get on that.” We’re guessing Kim will continue to focus on more desperate cases, but hey — it never hurts to ask. Pete Davidson Breaks Down on Stage: My Brain is Mush

Just days ago, Pete Davidson returned to Saturday Night Live , and he was characteristically good-humored when addressing his mental health. Unfortunately, after the sudden death of his friend and fellow comedian, he appears to be struggling. During a stand-up routine this week, he seemed to break down on stage, admitting that his “brain is mush.” On Tuesday, January 22, Pete Davidson did stand-up comedy at Caroline’s on Broadway in New York City. Even as the performance began, he admitted to the audience that he was off his game. “I’m in a weird mood,” Pete confessed. According to what an eyewitness tells Us Weekly , Pete “looked tired” as he took the stage in a hoodie and sweatpants. To be fair, perpetually looking tired has become part of Pete’s brand, and he has used that to comedic effect on Saturday Night Live . This time, however, it was no joke. Pete began his stand-up with his standard routine. He touched on standard subjects, like his breakup with former fiancee Ariana Grande, his mental health struggles, and the size of his penis. But he admitted that he was feeling off. Pete explained that he was “a bit sad” over the passing of his friend, late comedian Kevin Barnett. “My head hurts,” Davidson told his audience. “How long have I been up here?” “Sorry,” he apologized. “My brain is mush.” Kevin Barnett died at just 32 years old while on vacation in Mexico. Though Kevin’s death was confirmed on Tuesday, the day of Pete’s stand-up, the cause of death remains unknown. Kevin was active on social media as recently as Saturday, January 19. The tragic news came as a heartbreaking shock to his friends and family as well as to his fans. Pete was clearly reeling from the news. Pete was clearly at the end of his tether as, after continuing his routine, he asked “how much longer” he had on stage. Folks, Pete Davidson is a professional comedian. This is not typical behavior for him. Quite frankly, it’s worrisome. He was apologetic to the audience, and told them that they should feel free to “just leave” if they were tired. We hope that Pete is getting plenty of rest and anything else that he needs. There is no easy answer when someone is grappling with the loss of a friend. Sometimes, it hits you when you least expect. Pete has famously used his comedy for good. For years, he has been outspoken about his mental illness in order to help others know that they are not alone. More recently, he has taken aim at disgraced R&B singer R. Kelly . “I thought I was having a bad year,” Pete joked, poking fun at how many of R. Kelly’s secrets were recently exposed. “Man, that guy is evil,” Pete said, making it clear that he does not pity R. Kelly for his current public relations nightmare. Pete continued, stating that R. Kelly “should get shot in the f–king face.” We here at THG of course do not condone any illegal violence, no matter what a person may deserve. Of course, Pete may have been suggesting a lawful execution via firing squad. Grief hits people hard, and those with mental illness who are already fighting to function may be hit the hardest. We wish Pete and the rest of those who knew and loved Kevin the best as they grapple with this tragic news. View Slideshow: Pete Davidson Answers the Giant Penis Question Once and for All
