Cross Colours: Black Fashion In The 20th Century Exhibition Comes To The CAAM Museum

Source: Kevin Mazur / Getty The 90’s produced an era of African American brands that revolutionized fashion and left a long lasting affect on Black culture . From Baby Phat to Karl Kani, creative expression through fashion was widely practiced and supported. Among the many brands to leave a dent in Black culture was Cross Colours. Not only was their bright color-blocking aesthetic fueled with political messaging, it was also everything we didn’t know we needed at the time. Carl Jones and TJ Walker founded Cross Colours back in 1989. Their clothing line was a testament to the carefree feeling of the 90’s. Back then, women wore baggy clothes like the men so in some ways, they presented as gender neutral brand. It was a rebellious, fun, colorful way to express yourself and represent the culture, hence their tag line “Clothing without Prejudice”. Cross Colours aimed to have an open dialog on police brutality, drugs, and the educational gap by projecting the positive attributes of black and urban culture. https://www.instagram.com/p/B29oJ_ngIS7/?igshid=15ve8ud4gynva https://www.instagram.com/p/B2otX9ego8S/?igshid=w726t7jcv9ap With such a rich history contributed to the urban community, it is great to see that Cross Colours now has an exhibition at The California African American Museum called, “Cross Colours: Black Fashion in the 20th Century.” The exhibit shows the history of brand from it’s birth in 1989 to current day trends. In an interview with Vogue , Co-curator Tyree Boyd-Pates says the exhibition, “is organized as a visual roadmap of the African America social movements that inspired the brand, both thematically and historically.” He adds, “in particular, it shows how Cross Colours modeled Black pride, community responsibility, and solidarity in the early 1990s.” The messaging of the brand is something that rings very true today. “I can’t believe that the slogan we printed on our T-shirts, ‘Clothing Without Prejudice,’ is something that still needs to be said today,” Jones says. “That was in the ’90s, and I think it’s as relevant today as it was then, maybe even more so.” This exhibition couldn’t have come at a better time. It is a great way of showcasing how fashion can make a statement beyond the clothes you wear. There is a lack of Black designers producing affordable, urban street wear like there was in the 90’s. This exhibition in some ways pays homage to the innovators who used fabric as a way to unite an entire community of people. Personally speaking, I’m jealous of the L.A. residents who get to witness the history of Cross Colors at the California African American Museum. From now until March 1, 2020, you can experience the Black Fashion in the 20th Century exhibit. TRIED IT: Black Radiance True Complexion Contour Palette Will Have You Looking Like You Returned From A Caribbean Vacation

Read the rest here:

Source: Black Radiance True Complexion Deep To Dark Contour Palette / Courtesy of Black Radiance I’ve been on a no-foundation kick for about a year now. I really only wear it for major events or on camera appearances (if that). Recently, I hosted a panel at CurlFest Atlanta and had my makeup done by @LahLuvie (whom I HIGHLY recommend if you ever need your makeup done in Atlanta). Source: Arkeedah McCormick / Courtesy of Danielle James She had me looking like a STAR and I can’t lie, that I began craving that look. I’m currently in Africa and was attending a friend’s private movie screening and wanted to just give my face some extra love. I packed the Black Radiance True Complexion Deep To Dark Palette ($8.49, blackradiancebeauty.com ) and decided to give it a try. Source: Black Radiance True Complexion Deep To Dark Contour Palette / Courtesy of Black Radiance The palette is a powder palette and I’m not an expert at contouring. I was a little nervous to mess up; however, I decided to walk boldly into beauty. The first step I did was apply all my skincare products. After I let those settle in, I then applied my foundation. After my foundation, I applied some concealer under my eyes and blended in to help disguise my dark circles that were the result of some serious jet lag. Now it was time to use the palette. Contouring is great for when you want to help create some symmetry to your face or even slim out certain areas. The palette instructs you with an easy to follow application guide where to apply the contour, sculpt and highlight. This was helpful because as earlier mentioned, I’m not a contour queen. I suggest using a beauty blender, my personal favorite is founded by a Black woman, The Makeup Bullet ($25.00, amazon.com ). It comes 3 in a pack. I’ve been using them since about 2016. A beauty blender will help because if you are a bit heavy handed like me, it gives the opportunity for you to blend in your mistakes (I did this frequently). The Makeup Bullet is like a finger sponge, so it also helps with control and has a great pointed tip. Source: Danielle James / Courtesy of Danielle James I found the contour powder to be a bit dark at first; however, once I blended it in, it really created a beautiful look. Source: Danielle James / Courtesy of Danielle James The highlight is my absolute favorite and is even prettier upon application that it is in the palette. I started using it as well on days I didn’t contour but just wanted to glow. Source: Danielle James / Courtesy of Danielle James I was impressed with the overall look when I was done. I added some Kiss Lashes in Lacey ($6.99, kissusa.com ) and stepped back to admire my final beat! If I do say so myself, my makeup looked (almost) professionally done! I received a ton of compliments! Another thing, is that this easy to use guide helps the process not take so long. I think the contouring step took me all of 10 minutes (and this was my first try). I set the look with Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray ($33.00, sephora.com ) and mixed Fenty Beauty Stunna Lip Paint in Unveil ($24.00, sephora.com ) and Unbutton ($24.00, sephora.com ) to create a pinky chocolate nude look. I was ready for a night out! I give this palette five stars. The quality seems more expensive than the price tag and I was extremely happy with the final look. If you like to contour, you need to add this palette to your life! Source: Black Radiance True Complexion Light To Medium Contour Palette / Courtesy of Black Radiance For my lighter complexion beauties, the palette also comes in a light to medium option ($8.49, blackradiancebeauty.com ). I love that they offer two options for Black women. Beauties, have you tried this palette? Tell me in the comment section! If you do use it, share your look with me on Instagram by tagging me or DM’ing me @TheIslanDiva. I want to see! If you are interested in trying it, the Black Radiance website is currently having a 25% off sale for Fall by entering the code BRFALL. Happy shopping! Cardi B Explains Why She’s Naming Her Next Album ‘Tiger Woods’

I’m gonna name my album, I think,  Tiger Woods because remember when everybody was talking sh*t on Tiger Woods … and then he f**king came and won that green jacket?” Cardi B is naming her next album Tiger Woods (also I’m naming my next dog ). Looking back on that night, Cardi found herself reflecting in a recent note to fans. “I didn’t have no words to say but when I went home I started reminiscing on what I went thru during that period,” Cardi  said back in August of bagging the award. “I was like YEA B***H YOU DESERVE THIS SH*T. [And] until this day my sh*t still charting.” You can catch Cardi in theaters right now as part of the ensemble cast of  Hustlers featuring  Jennifer Lopez ,  Constance Wu ,  Lizzo ,  Keke Palmer and more. Angelina Jolie: Brad Pitt Pressured Me Into Marriage!

It’s been three years since Angelina Jolie filed for divorce from Brad Pitt . But it looks like the actress is still no closer to forgiving her former husband for whatever went down on that private jet back in 2016. According to a new report from Us Weekly , Angie was so traumatized by her brief marriage to Brad, that she’s vowed she “will never get married again.” In fact, it seems she never wanted to tie the knot in the first place! “She felt that Brad pressured her,” a source tells the tabloid. While the split between the A-listers was far from amicable, this is the first mention from either side of Jolie entering the marriage reluctantly. Brad and Angelina were together for nearly a decade when they finally tied the knot in 2014 . The couple said at the time that it was their six children who talked them into exchanging vows. But if the source from Us is to be believed, Angie is now claiming that Brad’s the one who wanted to make it legal. For the most part, the former couple has been as private about their divorce as they were about their marriage, but Brad did open up about the split during a recent interview with NPR: “I would be exploring it whether there was a script that allowed that or not,” he said while promoting his new film, Ad Astra. “A breakup of a family is certainly an eye-opener that as one — and I’m speaking in general again — but as one needs to understand, I had to understand my own culpability in that, and what can I do better. Because I don’t want to go on like this.” The insider claims that while relations between Brad and Angie are still icy, they’ve become far less hostile in recent months: “He’s grateful that all the animosity is in the past,” the source says. “[The kids] come first. That’s what he’s most excited about — being a dad and sharing his life with his children.” As you may recall, Pitt and Jolie called it quits amid reports of an altercation between Brad and the couple’s eldest son, Maddox, aboard a plane back in 2016. Insiders say it’s been a struggle at times, but the couple has finally managed to work out an amicable co-parenting arrangement. Although that doesn’t mean Brad is on the greatest terms with all of his children. Last month, Maddox headed off to college in South Korea, and insiders say he severed ties with his father before moving abroad. Hey, family life is complicated — even for the ridiculously wealthy and famous. View Slideshow: 13 Reasons to Be Glad You Never Slept With Brad Pitt

Accountability? I Don’t Know Her: Demi Lovato Apologizes Before Guilt-Tripping Fans Over Her Controversial Israel Posts

Source: Eric McCandless / Getty Demi Lovato Responds To Backlash Over Her Trip To Israel Demi Lovato recently posted about a “spiritual” vacation she took to Israel, being transparent about the fact that she was offered a free trip in exchange for posting about her experience. After making several posts about her experiences abroad, some fans weren’t happy with the photos and the fact that she went to Israel in the first place, accusing the singer of taking a political stance in the midst of the ongoing Israel and Palestine conflict. Because of the backlash, the singer turned off the comments on her Instagram page. View this post on Instagram I am an American singer. I was raised Christian and have Jewish ancestors. When I was offered an amazing opportunity to visit the places I’d read about in the Bible growing up, I said yes. There is something absolutely magical about Israel.  I’ve never felt such a sense of spirituality or connection to God…something I’ve been missing for a few years now.  Spirituality is so important to me…to be baptized in the Jordan river – the same place Jesus was baptized – I’ve never felt more renewed in my life. This trip has been so important for my well-being, my heart, and my soul.  I’m grateful for the memories made and the opportunity to be able to fill the God-sized hole in my heart. Thank you for having me, Israel A post shared by Demi Lovato (@ddlovato) on Oct 1, 2019 at 2:48pm PDT After that, she took to her instagram stories to apologize for her ignorance on the subject, complaining that nobody told her there would be any problem with her trip before going. “No one told me there would be anything wrong with going or that I could possible be offending anyone. With that being said, I’m sorry if I’ve hurt or offended anyone, that was not my intention” she explained. The singer continued, “Sometimes people present you with opportunities and no one tells you the potential backlash you could face in return. This was meant to be a spiritual experience for me, NOT A POLITICAL STATEMENT and now I realize it hurt people and for that I’m sorry. Sorry I’m not more educated, and sorry for thinking this trip was just a spiritual experience.” Demi Lovato apologizes for Israel trip after critics accused her of taking a political stance amid the country's ongoing conflict w/ Palestine: “This was meant to be a spiritual experience for me, NOT A POLITICAL STATEMENT & now I realize it hurt people and for that I'm sorry.” pic.twitter.com/s6HsvdUACX — Pop Crave (@PopCrave) October 3, 2019 Beyond her apology though, Demi doesn’t seem to actually take any responsibility for the backlash herself and has taken to several IG comment sections to reprimand her fans for holding her accountable in the first place. After one fanpage said that Lovato didn’t deserve backlash and used the hashtag #WeloveyouDemi, she commented back, saying, “or how about y’all stop having to make hashtags saying you love me every time you realize your words effect me?” In another comment, she threatens her fanbase with leaving social media, writing, “Oh don’t worry, you guys made me feel terrible about it, and prob will continue to do so. I’ll be hibernating.” im so glad i don't stan demi I would have a panic attack probably every day pic.twitter.com/3Yub03pzTl — Zoë (@vogueinq) October 3, 2019 Beside the fact that Demi probably should have done a little research herself on whether or not visiting Israel was a good look, her apology definitely doesn’t seem too sincere when followed up by a bunch of comments blaming her fan pages for making her feel bad. Moral of the story: if you’re offered something for free, like…say, a trip to Israel, there’s probably a catch.

Tyler Cameron & Gigi Hadid: It’s Over!

Can we get some follow-up episodes to Hannah Brown’s season of The Bachelorette? Because the drama with this cast is never-ending, and frankly, it’s a hell of a lot more interesting than anything else that’s coming down the TV pike this fall. One of the most interesting post-season storylines has involved the unexpected romance between Tyler Cameron and Gigi Hadid . After being rejected by Hannah in favor of Jed Wyatt (biggest f–k up in Bachelorette history?) Tyler began dating Gigi , and the two of them seemed to be getting serious. But after just two months of dating, sources have confirmed to E! News that Cameron and Hadid have called it quits. Neither party has spoken about the split publicly, but Tyler hinted at a split during a recent interview. “That’s my friend,” Tyler told E! when asked about Gigi. “We hung out a few times. She’s doing her thing now in Paris and killin’ it so…” Needless to say, Tyler is downplaying the situation considerably when he says that he and Gigi “hung out a few times.” Cameron and Hadid vacationed together and were spotted on numerous dates in the NYC area during their time together. Just last week, Tyler attended the funeral of Gigi’s grandmother . It’s unclear how serious these two were, but this was definitely more than just a fling. In fact, Tyler says he was offered a chance to be the next Bachelor , and it’s widely believed that he passed up the opportunity because of his relationship with Gigi. Instead, the gig went to Peter Weber, who’s basically the only one of Hannah’s frontrunners who didn’t go on to date a celebrity. Currently, it looks likew the relationship between Mike Johnson and Demi Lovato is heating up, and Johnson gushed about his A-list boo in a recent interview. “We’ve gone on more than one date. I like her tattoos. We both have a lot of tattoos and she kisses really well,” Mike said. “I’m getting to know her for her.” Hannah may not have been lucky in love herself. But she’s certainly proven to be a good luck charm for the dudes who competed for her roses!

The Extensions Expo In Newark, New Jersey Was A Hair Lover’s Dream (And Founded By A Black Woman)

Source: George Doyle / Getty Brands, professional hairstylists, and students gathered in New Jersey for the 10th Annual Extensions Expo this past weekend! A fabulous show where professionals and students could learn the ins and out of the hair business, network with fellow stylists and take their artistry to the next level, this event was the place to be over the weekend! The annual event kicked off with various hair education presentations ranging from styling wig units to the difference between cutting weaves, natural hair and relaxed hair and the art of advertising. There was also a presentation that highlighted the causes of hair loss and learning how to properly care and treat Black hair. While we all love experimenting with our manes, it’s always important to learn how to properly care for our hair to promote growth and prevent hair loss and “The Causes of Hair Loss” presentation did just that! Source: Tatayana Yomary / Tatayana Yomary “So many elements can impact our hair growth cycle from genetics to our diet,” Doris Mosely, certified trichologist and entrepreneur shares. “In order to promote growth, it’s important to adopt a healthy lifestyle and utilize products that are essential to your hair’s health. With so many products available, it’s easy to find a product line that does the bare minimum for your hair. Always do your research.” Source: Tatayana Yomary / Tatayana Yomary Personally, one of my favorite moments from the even was witnessing the styling contests! One in particular, the weave competition, showcased the talent and versatility of the participants. Stylists were given the task of creating a specific quick weave hairstyle in only an hour. With only a bag of tools ranging from extensions, styling products, tools and a picture of the hairstyle they needed to emulate, professional stylists and students raced to complete their chic looks. From blonde bob slays, cropped cuts, fluffy fros and everything in between, I would have never thought you could create hair magic in only 60 minutes! No hair expo is complete without training and the Extensions Expo delivered! With an array of hair weaving classes and hair extensions training, stylists were able to brush up on their skills and learn new tips and tricks to further their careers. Best of all, guests were also able to enjoy hair demos while asking questions to professional stylists. If that’s not enough, there were over 50 makeup brands, hair vendors and networking on hand for guests to enjoy. DON’T MISS:  Are You A Stylist Living In The NYC Metro Area? Tekashi69 Refuses to Enter Witness Protection, Sells Movie Rights to 50 Cent

Throughout the bizarre ordeal of his never-ending legal troubles, it’s been widely assumed that Tekashi69 plans to enter witness protection the moment he’s released from prison. After all, Tekashi’s freedom comes at a steep price, as his sentence is likely to be dramatically reduced as a result of his decision to testify against members of the Nine Trey Bloods gang , of which he was formerly a member. You don’t need to be studied up on the Nine Treys’ bylaws to know that snitching is not something they look kindly on. For weeks, Twitter has delighted in memes about Tekashi — whose real name is Daniel Hernandez — covering his facial tattoos in concealer and disappearing in rural Arkansas. But shockingly, it seems the rapper has no intention of attempting a disappearing act. In fact, it looks as though Mr. 69 is planning to resume his life in the spotlight as soon as he’s sprung from federal prison. According to a new report from TMZ, “Tekashi believes him testifying against his old crew will be forgotten almost instantly as soon as he’s released from prison — and he also thinks he’ll be more popular than ever with the masses.” Yes, in what may well turn out to be a fatally bad idea, Tekashi is not just refusing to hide from his former gangmates, he’s openly taunting them. “He thinks that anyone in the rap game who’s spoken ill of him since this whole legal ordeal began are not only envious, but threatened by him … afraid that he’ll pass ’em up and leave ’em in the dust when he gets out and starts making hits again,” TMZ reports. Mind you, this is the same gang that already kidnapped Tekashi and threatened to kill him once. And that was before he took the stand against them. In exchange for a much lighter sentence (at one point, it looked like he might remain behind bars for the rest of his life) Hernandez provided two days testified in the trial of Aljermiah “Nuke” Mack and Anthony “Harv” Ellison last month. Not only did he identify Mack and Ellison as members of the Nine Treys, Tekashi also claimed that rapper Cardi B was a member of the gang . Sounds like the makings of a Hollywood movie, right? Well, apparently that’s what 50 Cent thought, too. According to the latest from TMZ, 50 has purchased the rights to 69’s story with plans to turn it into a feature film. So we guess that’s good news for Tekashi. We just wish he weren’t in such a hurry to write an ending to his life story.
