As the name implies, a Black family comes together for a cookout that gets pretty interesting. Boyz n The Hood This 1991 film is one of the classics. The movie, set in inner-city Los Angeles, catapulted Nia Long , Morris Chestnut , Cuba Gooding Jr. and Ice Cube to fame. The Inkwell A young Larenz Tate and Jada Pinkett (before she married Will Smith ) light up the screen in this 1994 film. Before Tate captured women’s affections in Love Jones, he captured hearts in this coming-of-age film set in Martha’s Vineyard during the Fourth Of July weekend of 1976. Poetic Justice The legendary Maya Angelou provided the poetic words that powered this 1993 film that starred the iconic Janet Jackson and Tupac Shakur . Jackson and Shakur’s characters fall in love in the film, which featured a barbecue scene. Do The Right Thing This 1989 film was one of Spike Lee ‘s memorable and rawest journeys into inner-city life. Set on the hottest day of the year in the Bedford Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn, New York, the film is a searing look at what happens when heat meets hate as the characters struggle with racial frustrations that ultimately boil over into chaos. But in reaching the tipping point, Lee still shows the community’s spirit. Barbershop 2: Back In Business This 2004 comedy starring Ice Cube and Queen Latifah will bring the laughs. The movie, focused on a Chicago barbershop’s importance to its community, has a barbecue scene that shows off Latifah and Cedric the Entertainer ‘s comedic chops. Menace II Society This 1993 film is another cult classic that stars Pinkett and Tate. At the heart of the film set in Watts, Calfornia, the main character, Caine, played by Tyrin Turner , is trying to find his way to a better life. Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins This 2008 film isn’t one of Martin Lawrence ‘s best-known films, but it stars a lot of comedian talents including Mo’ Nique , Cedric The Entertainer and Mike Epps . Lawrence’s character returns home after achieving fame only to find out that his family could care less about his status. How Stella Got Her Groove Back This 1998 film had a braided-up Angela Bassett finding her to Jamaica to, well, get her groove back after a divorce and some major work stress. While there, she meets a young man played by Taye Diggs that piques her interest. Then, their lives both intertwine and change forever. Oh, there’s a good barbecue scene in this film, too. Source: Stephanie Keith / Getty A Black family in Atlanta decided to forgo the services of a white contractor who rolled up on their property with a huge Confederate Flag flying on the back of his truck. Allison and Zeke Brown of Atlanta kindly told the gentleman that because of the flag, his services were no longer needed and sent him on his way. Yahoo! reports : Allison and Zeke Brown of Atlanta, Georgia hired the man, whose name is Michael, to replace the brakes on their golf cart. When he arrived at their home on Saturday, an enormous rebel flag was attached to his truck. “Hi, you know what, I do apologize, I know you’ve come from a very long way, but we’re going to use someone else,” Allison, 40, a radiation therapist, tells Michael, as captured in a video on her Ring app. “She’s upset with the flag,” explains Zeke, 48. “No, I’m beyond upset with the flag,” corrects Allison. Michael offers to remove the flag, but Allison says, “No, you don’t need to take it down. You can continue to believe what you need to believe, sir. But no, I cannot pay you for your services. Thank you, have a good day.” Tough break but that flag’s history when it comes to Black folks and some of the folks who love to fly it made this a rather easy call. Taylor Swift spoke out against a hurtful injustice, only to get accused by Justin Bieber of just wanting attention . Since then, a number of other stars have spoken out in her defense, clapping back at the Biebs for being a douche. Now Emma Portner is speaking about time she spent working for Justin, accusing him of degrading women and grossly underpaying her. 24-year-old choreographer Emma Portner, who is notably Ellen Page’s wife, has spoken out in her Instagram Stories. “Justin Bieber, I regret working under your name,” Emma Portner’s post begins. “I gave you universe my naive body, creativity, time, and effort,” she writes, adding: “Twice.” Emma did this “for content that you made millions off of. While I mad zilch. Nada. Barely anything.” She describes her pay as having been “less than minimum wage for the hours I invested.” “I couldn’t afford to eat,” Emma Portner recalls. She adds: “I was sweeping studio floors to be able to practice my craft.” “The way you degrade women is an abomination,” Emma accuses. She notes: “You continue to collaborate with overly problematic people.” That’s an understatement. Justin gets along alarmingly well with the likes of Chris Brown and (formerly) Floyd Mayweather. “You religiously go to a church that does not support the LGBTQ+ community,” Emma observes. She’s not attacking his faith, but rather where he chooses to practice it. Emma admits that she cannot help but wonder how he feels about working with lesbians like herself and other LGBTQ+ folks. “I can only hope for your enlightenment,” she expresses. “That you read a ton of books.” She even offers to buy him some helpful literature to “change the way your traumatized brain thinks.” Emma also included a post about how one can be glad that they had opportunities while still holding people accountable for mistreatment. That’s very fair. It’s no mystery at all why Emma is speaking out about this now. Over the weekend, Taylor Swift put Scooter Braun on blast for what she described as a history of cruelty and bullying. She had learned, to her horror, that he will soon own the majority of her discography. The Biebs spoke in defense of his manager, and suggested that Taylor was only saying these things to make people pity her. The thing is that other singers and professionals have come out of the woodwork since Taylor spoke out. Additionally, fans have been posting old videos that lend more weight to Taylor’s claims. Madison Beer — who rose to fame after catching Justin’s eye years ago — once shared that her entire music career was swept out from under her. In other footage, Ariana Grande is heard briefly admitting that aspects of her album’s tracklist were not under her control, but under Scooter’s. When Taylor speaks out, she doesn’t have to provide receipts — her fans will whip them out on her behalf. Other celebrities have spoken in praise of her, including Halsey. Taylor Swift knows that speaking out isn’t likely to stop Scooter Braun from assuming ownership of her life’s work. She can’t stop it — she wasn’t even given the opportunity to bid on it, and didn’t know about the sale until it had already happened. But just because you can’t change what has happened doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t tell the world what powerful men do behind closed doors. Taylor knows that. But maybe public pressure and scrutiny will encourage Scooter to offer Taylor a deal, even if it’s only to save his reputation.
