Lady Gaga Announces HBO Monster Ball Special

‘Lady Gaga Presents the Monster Ball Tour at Madison Square Garden’ airs May 7. By Gil Kaufman Lady Gaga Photo: Kevin Winter/Getty Images Lady Gaga could not remember much about her celebration on Sunday night after winning three Grammy Awards, but during a Monday appearance on “The Tonight Show With Jay Leno,” she did manage to recall that she had yet another big announcement to make. “Oh, this is a very exciting new announcement,” she said during the appearance, in which she revealed that she and Madonna have no beef over Gaga’s smash single “Born This Way,” which some critics and fans have said resembles some of Madonna’s 1990s work. “I am going to be taping a special for HBO of the Monster Ball.” HBO confirmed on Tuesday (February 15) that the singer’s first solo HBO concert special will air on May 7. The program will be taped during Gaga’s February 21-22 shows at Madison Square Garden and will be titled “Lady Gaga Presents the Monster Ball Tour at Madison Square Garden.” “Lady Gaga is the single most exciting music talent on the scene today,” said HBO president Sue Naegle in a statement announcing the deal. “We’re especially thrilled that she’ll be creating unique new elements for the special that will make the show an even more memorable experience for our viewers.” The HBO show will begin airing a few weeks before the release of Gaga’s highly anticipated Born This Way album, which hits stores on May 23. It will be directed by Laurieann Gibson, who has choreographed most of Lady Gaga’s videos, including “Poker Face,” “Paparazzi,” “Telephone,” “Alejandro” and “Bad Romance.” Gaga also dropped the news that the “Born This Way” video will be out soon and that it is a collaboration between her own Haus of Gaga and fashion photographer Nick Knight. The singer admitted that she didn’t remember much about Sunday night’s post-Grammy party, but she remembers that “it was fun. I do remember being called ‘drunky Gaga.’ ” Renowned for her elaborate entrances, Gaga said that Hussein Chalayan, the Turkish designer behind the egg-shaped device in which she was carried into the Grammys, wanted to make sure everyone knew it should be referred to as a “vessel.” Joking (we think), Gaga told Leno she spent three days inside the temperature-controlled device. Gaga also explained that the “vessel” was intended to signify rebirth, specifically the birth of a new race “with no prejudice … against anyone.” Related Photos Lady Gaga’s Grammy Night Related Artists Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga vs. Britney Spears: Who Will Rule 2011?

As she announced earlier via pants-less Twitter pic, Lady Gaga has a new album out this spring. But she’ll have some serious competition as she looks to cement her place as the reigning queen of pop music and culture: Britney Spears. Gaga’s single, “Born This Way,” is due out next month, with her album of the same name set for May. Britney’s album is scheduled for a March release. Which pop queen will conquer music in 2011? Which bombshell will rise to the top of the heap? Can they deliver truly cutting-edge music or will they rely on their persona to carry them forward? On top of musical similarities, the two have rabid fan bases (Gaga, Justin Bieber and Britney have the most Twitter fans worldwide, in that order). While Gaga’s image is unique and experimental, she’s still so new to the scene that it’s hard to know what to expect in terms of her musical style. The same is true, oddly enough, of Britney. Despite being a seasoned vet, she’s so micromanaged that musically, she’s now a veritable blank slate. These new Britney song lyrics were leaked, but would anything she does fail to satisfy her fans? Spears is as bulletproof as they come in this era. Because The Fame was so groundbreaking and so fresh, the pressure is more on Gaga to produce something of comparable cultural significance. Both will rack up huge sales because people are invested in them . Even if the albums are merely average, fans want them to succeed as people. But if either superstar comes out with an album that’s edgy, catchy, different and brilliant on its own merit, that’s who will rule the year in music. What do you think? Whose album will fare better this year?

Hugh Hefner: I Love Crystal Harris!

We are not traditional. So said Crystal Harris to People when asked about her relationship with Hugh Hefner. The 24-year old wasn’t even referring to the age difference between her and her 84-year old fiance, however. She was simply recounting how Hefner proposed, placing her giant ring inside a Little Mermaid music box and not getting down on one knee. Hefner, meanwhile, describes Crystal as “totally devoted,” adding: “Her priorities are pretty much our relationship, No. 1 and No. 2 and 3, and you don’t always find that. Despite the age disparity, the truth of the matter is we have a great deal in common, we really complement one another, we have a wonderful time together, and I love her.” What else can you ask of the couple, who met at the Playboy Mansion in 2008 and bonded over their shared psychology majors in college? Harris has turned around Hefner’s opinion on marriage, as the magazine founder admits he always thought “people start to take one another for granted” once they’re hitched. “I just simply found myself in a relationship with Crystal in which I felt, quite frankly, the opposite seemed to be true – that the more committed to one another we were, the closer we got, and the more we loved one another, and I just think this one, for me, will be the exception to the rule.” Isn’t that sweet? Totally gross and nauseating, considering the pair’s ages… but also sweet.

Mariah Carey Performs With Mother On Holiday TV Special

Superstar sang holiday classics and songs from her new Christmas album Merry Christmas II You during concert. By James Dinh Mariah Carey and her mother, Patricia, sing on stage together during ABC’s “Mariah Carey: Merry Christmas to You” Photo: ABC It was an evening full of smiles, snow and festive cheer as Mariah Carey treated fans to an early Christmas gift with her own holiday TV special on Monday night. The ABC broadcast, appropriately titled “Mariah Carey: Merry Christmas to You,” featured the pregnant singer spreading merry joy throughout Los Angeles’s Orpheum Theater with yuletide classics, holiday originals and a first-time onstage performance with her mother, Patricia Carey. Decked out in a Santa-esque minidress, Carey kicked the hour-long broadcast off with her high-energy tune “Oh Santa” — the lead single from her second holiday album, Merry Christmas II You — as a pack of kids happily danced around the singer. “They say it’s unrealistic/ But I believe in you Saint Nick/ So grant this wish for me right quick/ Santa won’t you come and make him mine this Christmas night,” Mariah crooned before the sparkling stage setup. Carey also put her own spin on Christmas classics by mashing them together. “Alright, so we’re going to do a new song … actually a very old song,” she told the roaring crowd. “We created a medley of ‘Little Drummer Boy’ and ‘O Little Town of Bethlehem’ for the new album Merry Christmas II You, and we’re going to play that one for you tonight. And here we go. …” During the number, the singer displayed her vocal acrobatics, including her soothing falsetto, with the assistance of a backing choir before kicking off “O Holy Night,” which she described as one of her “favorite Christmas songs of all time.” Soon after, friend and musical collaborator Randy Jackson joined the singer for a hip-hop-flavored rendition of “Here Comes Santa Claus (Housetop Celebration).” The “American Idol” judge appeared excited to take the stage with the singer as he urged the audience to applaud for “the hottest, the dopest, the bestest … Mariah Carey.” Later on, Carey sang another original, “When Christmas Comes,” which she revealed she’d never performed live. The song draws similarities to her inspirational 2002 song “Fly Like a Bird.” Before a clip from the holiday classic “A Charlie Brown Christmas,” the soon-to-be mother traded the show’s earlier spectacles for a piano and accompanying player for a peaceful rendition of “Christmas Time Is Here” and fan favorite “Joy to the World.” The evening wasn’t just full of jolly anthems though, as the focus turned to Make-a-Wish child Mackenzie, who is in need of a new kidney. Footage of the young girl was shown alongside her adoptive mother, Ronna Williams. After exchanging a few words with her, Carey directed the audience to give a round of applause to Mackenzie and dedicated her “Christmas Time Is in the Air Again” to her. Making the celebration even more memorable was a performance by the singer and her mom, opera singer Patricia Carey, who took the stage together to perform a medley of “O Come All Ye Faithful” and “Hallelujah.” “Please give a big hand to my very special guest. My mother, Patricia Carey, is here tonight,” the songbird said, standing next to her mother. “We’re going to do a song from the new album Merry Christmas II You. This is something that’s very close to both of our hearts.” And if fans ever wondered where Mimi got her vocal talent, it became clear last night. In a singing extravaganza, Patricia took control of the performance as Mariah followed behind with repetition lines until she busted out her signature whistle notes. Carey ended the festivities on a high note (literally), singing her signature holiday classic “All I Want for Christmas Is You” as an entourage of holiday characters danced around the powerhouse diva. The gang offered her a batch of gifts, but the singer kept in tune with the song’s lyrics by pushing their presents aside. As the song ended, the stage was transformed into a winter wonderland as a flood of snow fell atop the stage ceiling and onto Carey and company. Did you catch Mariah’s TV special? Nicole Kidman Talks Babies, Nightmares At ‘Rabbit Hole’ Premiere

‘I was having nightmares and I was really shaken,’ she tells MTV News about tackling difficult role. By Eric Ditzian Nicole Kidman Photo: MTV News Several years ago, when Nicole Kidman was pregnant with her daughter, she began developing a big-screen adaptation of “Rabbit Hole,” the Pulitzer Prize-winning play about parents suffering through the unimaginable loss of their young son. The experience of bringing a life into the world while simultaneously shepherding a project about a life lost was an intensely affecting one for the actress, as she explained on Thursday at the film’s red-carpet premiere. When production on “Rabbit Hole” began, daughter Sunday Rose was a year old, and Kidman found it difficult to let go of the characters at the end of each day. “[It] deeply affects me,” she told MTV News. “There were times when I woke in the middle of the night and I was having nightmares and I was really shaken by it. And that’s when I know when something’s really seeped into my subconscious and is disturbing me.” Co-star Aaron Eckhart — who plays Kidman’s husband, one half of a couple being torn apart by the death of their child — similarly found himself reevaluating the idea of marriage and fatherhood. “It made me reflect on parenthood,” he explained. “I’m not a father and I’m not married. Maybe someday I will be. I just put myself in that position of losing my son and almost losing my wife. I learned a lot about grief.” As dark as the material can be at times, the red carpet was anything but a depressing affair. Kidman was all smiles as she posed for pictures and answered questions alongside her husband, country music star Keith Urban. Jon Hamm, Parker Posey and co-star Sandra Oh were also on-hand for the celebration. Director John Cameron Mitchell pointed out that the festive mood was in keeping with the overall message of “Rabbit Hole,” which opens in limited release on December 17. “It isn’t depressing,” he said. “You are going to intense places, but everybody loves a good cry. Some people get that out in therapy, but many Americans do it through their entertainment. And this is an entertaining film despite its heaviness and it does end up with a lot of hope.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Rabbit Hole.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .
