The Curse of 2016: Why Have So Many Celebrities Died This Year?

In the comments section for her latest post on the blogging site Medium, a writer named Judy Anne was heavily criticized for her overly-simplistic explanation for why so many beloved celebrities prematurely passed away in 2016. Like so many of us, Judy Anne is desperate to make somehow make sense of how the entertainment world could be shaken by so many tragedies in a single 12-month span. Unlike the rest of us, she claims to have the answer. Judy believes that a rise in the use of illicit substances is to blame for the endless string of famous deaths that marred the past year. Thankfully, dozens of Medium users were quick to point out the foolishness of her argument. (The fact that she felt the need to refer to George Michael as “an enthusiastic cannabis user” – as though that habit played any role in his death – certainly didn’t help her case.) Were some beloved entertainers felled by substance abuse over the past year? Sadly, yes. The most obvious example is the death of Prince , who overdosed on the fentanyl, which he had been using to treat chronic pain. But the celebrities who left us in 2016 did so in myriad ways, ranging from freak accidents to unthinkable acts of violence to old age. By now, you’ve likely heard the jokes about the awfulness of 2016, joined in the mourning when an entertainer whose work touched your life passed before their time, and wondered aloud why so many celebrities died in such a short period of time. Of course, despite what Judy Anne would have you believe, there’s no indication that a new addiction epidemic is sweeping Hollywood. No, the real reasons that stars seem to be falling in record numbers are more complex and far less scandalous: For starters, the number of entertainers, athletes, politicians, and other public figures who could be described as famous exploded in the years after World War II. As television entered households, entertainment options expanded, and faces were matched with the names of America’s favorite stars. With each ensuing decade, the number of celebrities increased, sometimes exponentially. The Internet opened the doors for a new breed of media personality by eliminating the need to follow the traditional paths to fame. In short, there are more celebrities now than ever before, and because the pop cultural landscape we know today began to take shape in the mid-20th Century, many of those stars are getting on in years. So part of the reason it seems like so many famous people are dying is because we’re feeling the after-effects of the celebrity boom that began in the late ’40s and early ’50s. Sadly, that means the trend of beloved showbiz icons passing on in astonishing numbers is likely to continue in the years to come. Of course, the fact remains that some of the stars who left us this year were not  baby boomer legends, but young phenoms who had yet to show us what heights they could achieve. Anton Yelchin, Christina Grimmie, Joey Feek, Phife Dawg, and Dave Mirra ranged in age from 22 to 45, and they all left this world well before their time in 2016. There deaths remind us that there’s no way to fully make sense of the tragedies that hit Hollywood this year. We can point to the increase in the number of celebrities, the proliferation of media that brings our attention to deaths we may not have known about, and plain old horrendous luck, but as anyone who’s ever mourned a loved one knows, attempts to make sense of the loss of a life that touched your own are usually in vain. Perhaps all we can do for now is be grateful for the stars who are still with us and hope for a better year ahead. View Slideshow: Celebrities Who Passed Away in 2016: Gone, But Not Forgotten

Debbie Reynolds: Mother of Carrie Fisher Suffers Possible Stroke

More sad news out of Hollywood today, as iconic actress and singer Debbie Reynolds has reportedly been rushed to a Los Angeles-area hospital after exhibiting symptoms of a stroke. Just yesterday, Reynolds’ daughter, Carrie Fisher, passed away after suffering a heart attack aboard an airplane. According to TMZ, Reynolds was at the home of her son, Todd Fisher, discussing plans for Carrie’s funeral at the time of her medical emergency. Sources say Reynolds’ family called 911 to report a possible stroke, and she was transported to the hospital by ambulance shortly thereafter. Early reports offer few details about the 84-year-old’s condition. Reynolds was reportedly admitted to the hospital around 1 pm PST. Sources say her family has gathered to be by her side, and they’re currently awaiting a prognosis. TMZ is reporting that emergency dispatch audio indicates multiple units were directed to the scene, and first responders stated that Reynolds appeared to have suffered a stroke. Though these days she’s likely best known as the mother of Carrie Fisher, for many years, Reynolds was one of the most in-demand performers in Hollywood. Reynolds has racked up more than 80 film and television credits over the course of her eight decades in the industry. She earned an Academy Award nomination for her role in The Unsinkable Molly Brown, an Emmy nod for her work on Will & Grace. Fisher spoke openly about the difficulties of being raised by two celebrities (her father was actor Eddie Fisher), telling Oprah Winfrey in 2011: “The family is organized [around] the parents, [whereas] normally the family is organized around raising the child.” Over the years, Reynolds has been equally candid about the rough patches in her relationship with her daughter. “There have been a few times when I thought I was going to lose Carrie,” she said in her interview with Oprah. “I’ve had to walk through a lot of my tears. But she’s worth it.” View Slideshow: Carrie Fisher: Mourned, Honored by Hollywood Our thoughts are with Debbie’s family during this tremendously difficult week. Debbie Reynolds Dies; Actress, Mother of Carrie Fisher Was 84

Debbie Reynolds, the iconic actress who starred in some of Hollywood’s best-loved films, has passed away at the age of 84. Reynolds’ daughter, Carrie Fisher, passed away  just yesterday after suffering a massive heart attack aboard a commercial flight. According to TMZ, Reynolds was at her son’s home, making arrangements for Fisher’s funeral, when she suffered the stroke that claimed her life just hours earlier. Over the course of her nearly 70-year career, Reynolds racked up more than 80 film and television credits, including such enduring classics as Singin’ In the Rain and How the West Was Won . She scored a Best Supporting Actress Academy Award nomination for her work in The Unsinkable Molly Brown in 1965, and an Emmy nod for her recurring role on Will & Grace in 2000. In 2015, she received the Academy’s Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award. Reynolds’ personal life was often the subject of intense media scrutiny, such as when her first husband, Eddie Fisher, left her Elizabeth Taylor. Reynolds’ often turbulent relationship with her daughter was also a frequent source of interest to fans and the tabloid press. Both parties spoke candidly about their difficulties, with Fisher using the relationship as the basis for her autobiographical novel, Postcards From the Edge , later adapted into a film starring Meryl Streep. Reynolds was also a highly-regarded singer and stage performer, and one of the world’s foremost collectors of film memorabilia. At one point, she owned Marilyn Monroe’s “subway dress” from The Seven Year Itch , a Charlie Chaplin bowler hat and a copy of the ruby slippers from The Wizard of Oz , all of which she fought to have displayed in prominent museums. But for all of her many accomplishments, in later years, Reynolds was best known as the mother of one of Hollywood’s most beloved scren icons. “There have been a few times when I thought I was going to lose Carrie,” Reynolds told Oprah Winfrey during a 2011 interview. “I’ve had to walk through a lot of my tears. But she’s worth it.” Reynolds’ passing marks a fitting, but almost unbelievably tragic end to one of Hollywood’s most compelling mother-daughter relationships. Carrie Fisher Dies; Beloved Star Wars Actress Was 60

Carrie Fisher, a veteran actress best known and revered for her role as Princess Leia in the Star Wars franchise, has passed away. She was 60 years old. Fisher was flying from London to Los Angeles on a United flight when she  suffered a major heart attack  on board an airplane late last week. The incident took place 15 minutes before the flight landed in LAX. Once the plane landed, paramedics worked on the star for 15 minutes with CPR before they were able to find the star’s pulse. She was then transferred to UCLA Medical Center and was in critical condition before succumbing to the heart attack earlier Tuesday. Family spokesman Simon Halls released a statement to the media on behalf of Fisher’s daughter, Billie Lourd: “It is with a very deep sadness that Billie Lourd confirms that her beloved mother Carrie Fisher passed away at 8:55 this morning.” “She was loved by the world and she will be missed profoundly. Our entire family thanks you for your thoughts and prayers.” Fisher, of course, sky-rocketed to fame in 1977 as one of the main characters in George Lucas’ iconic space opera  Star Wars . She recently reprised the role of Princess Leia in 2015’s The Force Awakens and next year’s Star Wars: Episode VIII . It’s unclear what will happen to Leia’s storyline in Episode IX, tentatively scheduled for release in December 2019. Along with this legendary film character, Fisher appeared on a number of films and TV shows over the years. She had been the voice of Angela on Family Guy since 2005; stopped by The Big Bang Theory as herself in 2014; and also portrayed Mia in Catastrophe. Fisher was even nominated for a pair of Primetime Emmy Awards: Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series for her role on 30 Rock in 2008; and Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Special for Wishful Drinking in 2011. Fisher also recently made headlines when she came out and admitted to an affair with Harrison Ford way back during the filming of A New Hope . She spoke of this romantic entanglement as part of her press tour for The Princess Diarist, a memoir that was released on November 22 of this year. Three decades earlier, Fisher wrote her first memoir, along with the screenplay for the movie based on the book. She was married to Bryan Lourd and Paul Simon; Billie is her only child. The daughter of showbiz veteran Debbie Reynolds and entertainer Eddie Fisher, she was brought up in the world of film, theater and TV. Fisher made her film debut in the Warren Beatty-lead Shampoo while she was a teenager and was just 19 when she was cast in Star Wars . In addition to the second and third Star Wars films, Fisher starred in 1980’s The Blues Brothers and The Man with One Red Shoe. She appeared in Woody Allen’s Hannah and Her Sisters in 1986 and, later, the award-winning classic  When Harry Met Sally . Fisher wed musician Paul Simon in 1983. Theirs was an explosive marriage, according to Homeward Bound: The Life of Paul Simon author Peter Ames Carlin. The union was cut short by swinging stages of depression, the actress’ drug use and an array of personal insecurities. Nevertheless, the tumultuous relationship continued, on-and-off for several years, after the pair got divorced in 1984.  The star’s substance abuse problem was well-known, starting at only age 13 when she first started smoking marijuana, Fisher said. She later dabbled in drugs like cocaine and LSD. Fisher’s addiction was largely profiled in her 1987 best-selling, semi-autobiographical novel, Postcards from the Edge. Always open about her life, in good times and bad, Fisher’s book was later turned into a movie starring Meryl Streep. Fisher is the latest in a long line of major names to have passed away in 2016, as tragically detailed in the gallery below. We send our condolences to her friends, family members and other loved ones as they mourn the passing of one of the true greats. Versace, Versace: Bougie Retails Accused Of Using Code To Announce Black Shoppers

Ex-Versace Employee Claims Stores Use Secret Code To Announce Black Customers If there was ever any evidence that respectability politics will not lead you to white heaven… Well-to-do black folks (and some of y’all who just spend money you ain’t got) have been lining Versace’s pockets with money for YEARS, but according to TMZ , the retail stores that peddle Gianni’s fine fabrics may not be so keen on us. A former employee reveals that when black customers walk into the store, the staff would use a secret code to announce his or her presence. The man worked in a Bay Area store, and in a lawsuit says a manager told him about a store code called “D410,” which was used to casually let co-workers know a black person was present — as in, we got a D410 in menswear. BTW … that’s the code for all black shirts in Versace stores … according to the suit. The employee says he shocked the manager by responding, “You know that I’m African-American?” After cracking the code, the employee says he was no longer given required breaks and was fired 2 weeks later. The reason for firing? He hadn’t “lived the luxury life”. Right. It comes as no surprise that Versace denies being bigots. Image via YouTube

George Michael Dies; Iconic Singer Was 53

George Michael, the influential British singer and cultural icon, suddenly passed away over the Christmas holiday, his publicist confirms. He was 53. Michael’s London-based publicist, Connie Filippello, issued a brief statement to the BBC, the first publication to report Michael’s death. “It is with great sadness that we can confirm our beloved son, brother and friend George passed away peacefully at home over the Christmas period.” “The family would ask that their privacy be respected at this difficult and emotional time. There will be no further comment at this stage.” The music great’s cause of death was heart failure, according to multiple media reports, though this has yet to be independently confirmed. It is not clear when exactly Michael passed away. Immediately, his maby fans, family and friends reacted to the latest stunning celebrity death of 2016, a year that cannot end fast enough. “I am in deep shock,” Elton John wrote on Instagram. “I have lost a beloved friend, the kindest, most generous soul and a brilliant artist.” “My heart goes out to his family and all of his fans.” Michael’s career began back in the ’80s, both as the frontman for the British teen idols Wham! and then as a hugely successful solo artist. He leaves a legacy of tremendous musical achievements, and also of well-documented professional struggles and personal scandals. Michael’s first solo album, 1987’s Faith , was a cultural milestone thanks to huge hits in the title track, “I Want Your Sex,” “Father Figure” and more. The album’s blend of pop, funk and soul created a sound that endures uniquely and powerful to this day and cemented his legendary status. View Slideshow: 25 Shocking Celebrity Deaths He became the first Caucasian artist to reach the top position on Billboard’s R&B chart, and he remained a fixture on the charts for years. Michael wrote and produced almost all of his wildly successful work, setting a new standard for popular music stars and acts of his caliber. Faith’s follow-up albums,  Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1 and Vol. 2,  did not match his debut, but produced considerable hits and sales. In 2004, the Radio Academy declared that Michael’s music had been played on British radio more than that of any artist from 1984-2004. Michael’s career would be overshadowed, however, by his tabloid exploits, as questions of the singer’s sexual orientation came to the forefront. Most notably, thanks to an infamous moment in 1998. View Slideshow: Celebrities Who Passed Away in 2016: Gone, But Not Forgotten That year, he was arrested for lewd behavior after revealing himself to a man, who turned out to be a police officer, in a public restroom. Michael later became open about his homosexuality. He was arrested several additional times between 2006-2010 for possession of drugs and driving under the influence, and battled health issues. We will have more on Michael’s tragic passing as information becomes available, and on the music world’s reaction to the loss of a legend. Our thoughts are with the singer’s family and friends.
