Johnny Depp Secures Place As ‘Alpha Vampire’

‘Dark Shadows’ star tells Robert Pattinson that ‘there’s room for two vampires on this block.’ By Jocelyn Vena Johnny Depp and Robert Pattinson Photo: Warner Bros./ Summit In a recent interview with this big screen vampire, Johnny Depp opened up about any potential vampy face-offs with fellow heartthrob and big-screen bloodsucker Robert Pattinson. When asked if there’s any sort of blood feud with the “Twilight” star, Depp noted that it’s all cool between the two actors. “There’s room for two vampires on this block — as long as he remembers I am the Alpha Vampire,” he told UsMagazine.com at the London premiere of his campy vampire flick, “Dark Shadows,” which opens this weekend. Of course Edward Cullen and Barnabas Collins aren’t really cut from the same vampire DNA. Where Edward is brooding and sullen, Barnabas is on the other end of the spectrum, with his oddball charm and old-world demeanor. And their transitions to the modern world are quite different. While Edward had been living in the world over the course of his vampire life, Barnabas had been in a coffin for 200 years before emerging in the 1970s. When MTV News spoke to Depp about the film , he noted that exploring Barnabas’ evolution in the contemporary world was what drew him to the story. “Playing a kind of reluctant vampire, in a sense, the reluctant vampire who has been locked in a box for 200 years and his misfortune to be let out in an age when things are probably at their most surreal in terms of 1972,” Depp said. “It’s a very odd period. Things are changing radically; the sort of peace and love thing was over with, and we were rapidly approaching disco, so musically and aesthetically, that was the fun of it, to place this hyper-elegant figure from the late 18th century into one of the weirdest times of all time.” The film is the latest collaboration between Deep and director Tim Burton. It’s the big-screen adaptation of the 1960s soap opera of the same name. Who do you think is the Alpha Vampire: Edward Cullen or Barnabas Collins? Leave your pick below! First Look: Bebe Neuwirth Has Sympathy For the Understudy in The Standbys

It’s a tough life being a Broadway standby — knowing a part backward and forward, exhibiting months, even years of patience while literally waiting in the wings for your chance to play the role you’re backing up for the star of the show. On the bright side, at least now you’d have an entire film telling your story — one for which Movieline is pleased to present a first look ahead of The Standbys world premiere this weekend in New York. Directed by Stephanie Riggs, The Standbys introduces viewers to a few of the performers who’ve made livings — and eventually, in some cases, made names — in some of the most thankless positions in all of theater: Standby and understudy. The documentary opens the Tony Awards Film Series this Saturday at the Paley Center in Manhattan; below, have quick glimpse at the film, featuring the sobering insights of Broadway icon Bebe Neuwirth. Here’s more about The Standbys and this Saturday’s screening; we’ll keep you up to date about a theatrical and/or video release as events warrant: This dramatic documentary takes a behind-the-scenes look at the lives of performers rarely glimpsed by audiences. These performers, known as “standbys,” remain backstage, prepared to go on at a moment’s notice. In this evocative behind-the-scenes documentary, the at times heartbreaking and hilarious lives of Broadway’s understudies and standbys are finally brought into the spotlight. “The Standbys” follows three undiscovered performers for several years through their ups and downs, struggles and triumphs, onstage performances and private lives. When these standbys are finally given the chance of a lifetime, anything can – and does – happen. The film features never-before-heard stories from industry insiders and celebrities who reveal the unimaginable struggles these under-appreciated performers endure as they wait in the wings for their shot at a dream that may never come true. The Standbys screening will be followed by a talk-back panel of Tony Award-winning Broadway stars who got their start as understudies or standbys. [Panelists include Tony Award Winners Katie Finneran and Cady Huffman, Merwin Foard, Ben Crawford, Alena Watters and director Stephanie Riggs.] The Standbys follows actors Ben Crawford (standby for Shrek), Merwin Foard (standby for Gomez in The Addams Family) and up and comer Aléna Watters (standby for Anita in West Side Story). Other interviewees include: Jerry Zaks, Bebe Neuwirth, Brian D’Arcy James, Cheyenne Jackson, Sutton Foster, David Hyde Pierce, Katie Finneran, Nelle Nugent, Michael Riedel, Zachary Quinto.

Vanessa Hudgens’ Spandex Thunder Thighs

I get a lot of pictures of sexy celebrities walking around in their workout gear, do gyms not have locker rooms anymore? So I’m pretty use to seeing ladies in their spandex, but that doesn’t mean I’m not going to post them for you. Here’s Vanessa Hudgens showing off her figure while she walks the streets the other day. I think she might be cursed with some pretty thick genes. I hate to say that, but those thighs look like they’re designed for a roller derby or cart pulling.

Rihanna On Mend After Flu-Related IV

After ‘Battleship’ star tweets photo of an IV in her arm, source says she had a fever and flu ‘but is fine now.’ By Kara Warner Rihanna Photo: Lester Cohen/ WireImage Celebrities: They’re just like us! Even the most famous pop stars catch the flu bug every now and then — at least, that’s what seems to have been ailing Rihanna recently. The 24-year-old singer issued a colorful complaint about feeling under the weather via Twitter over the weekend, and then surprised her 18 million followers with the photographic proof of her unidentified illness Tuesday with a Twit pic that showed RiRi in bed with an IV in her arm. According to People , a source close to Rihanna said the singer is on the mend and was not suffering from anything serious: “She had a fever and flu since last week and needed an IV, but is fine now.” Not that we’re qualified to offer a diagnosis here at MTV News, but judging from all the traveling, performing and promotion Rihanna has been involved in during the past month leading up to the release of her first movie, “Battleship,” as well as her performance on “SNL,” it seems likely the young woman was simply worn out. Here’s hoping she takes some actual time off for rest and relaxation. Meanwhile, we only have to wait a little while longer to see the “Where Have U Been” singer in her big-screen debut, a role that Rihanna said she relished because she got to be a total badass. “I wanted to do something badass, but I didn’t imagine it would be grungy, like straight Navy soldier, no makeup,” Rihanna said of her expectations for her first movie role. “I enjoyed it. “Battleship” opens May 18. Dancing With the Stars Results: Who Survived the Double Elimination?

Dancing With the Stars bid farewell to two of its top six competitors on last night’s results show. Did the four favorites survive, or were there surprises? It was really anyone’s game. A week after scoring a perfect 30, Maria Menounos and Derek Hough found themselves in second-to-last place Monday. Roshon Fegan, who narrowly avoided elimination, climbed to second, while only six points separated William Levy in first from Melissa Gilbert in last. So which four celebrities are moving on to the semifinals? Roshon and Chelsie Hightower were the first couple to be eliminated. Even after having one of their better weeks, it wasn’t enough for the young pair. “I’m definitely very happy that I can add ballroom dancing to my super-duper dance moves,” Roshon told co-host Brooke Burke-Charvet in response. “I’m so proud of you,” his partner Chelsie said. “He was such a joy to work with and came to work everyday willing to work and with such a great attitude.” “I’m happy to end it on a high note and I’m happy I had you as my partner.” The second couple eliminated on Tuesday were … Melissa Gilbert and Maksim Chmerkovskiy. “I can’t even describe what a learning and growing experience it’s been. It’s been a real blessing and a joy,” said the actress, on her 48th birthday. “I’m amazed that I even made it this far, and the things that I was able to do and the things that were able to overcome to have been here on this day, does make it a really incredible birthday,” Gilbert added. “Maks has been amazing, an incredible teacher, an incredible friend.” And so it goes. Levy, Menounos, Katherine Jenkins and Donald Driver are on to the final four, where it will again be anyone’s game next week! What do you think? Did America get the DWTS results right?

Katherine Jenkins Wardrobe Malfunction Doesn’t Slow Dancing With the Stars Favorite

Dancing With the Stars standout Katherine Jenkins has joked that her outfits are being “sabotaged” on the 14th season of the ABC reality show. The Welsh opera singer, 31, may have come in as one of the season’s least-known celebrities, but she’s changed that with powerhouse routines. The occasional wardrobe malfunction doesn’t hurt, either … as long as it’s properly managed. Last night, Katherine rolled with it like a champ! Her trousers were supposed to be removed during her three-person routine with Mark Ballas and Tristan MacManus last night, but one leg got stuck … Katherine Jenkins, Mark Ballas and Tristan MacManus on Dancing With the Stars “It was a disaster. When the guys ripped my outfit off, it’s perfectly in half so I thought it had gone really smoothly,” Katherine told ET. “And then I look down and … I don’t even know how it’s worked that half a trouser leg is still there. It doesn’t make any sense. We think it was sabotaged!” The blonde songbirds admits she was left shaken by the incident. However, she did her best to remain composed on the dance floor. The trio’s score of 29 was the highest score of the second round, and left Jenkins in a tie for third on the DWTS scoreboard overall.
