Family, friends and celebrities packed into the Newark church where Whitney Houston grew up and remembered the late singer’s voice, love and — most of all — faith at her homegoing service Saturday. The nearly four-hour service featured performances from Alicia Keys, R. Kelly, the Winans family, Stevie Wonder and others. Many of the performers adapted lyrics in tribute to Houston, including Kim Burrell and Stevie Wonder, who altered his version of one of Houston’s favorite songs, “Ribbon in the Sky.” Houston died a week ago at age 48 in Los Angeles. Many of the speakers spoke about Whitney Houston’s Baptist background and her strong faith in God, including an emotional Tyler Perry, who received a standing ovation. “I am completely thankful to God for all he has done her life,” Perry said. “There is a grace that kept on carrying her. … Whitney Houston loved the Lord.” Actor Kevin Costner also received a standing ovation after he spoke of Houston’s courage when she tried out for a starring role with him in the 1992 movie “The Bodyguard.” Oprah Winfrey, Mary J. Blige, Mariah Carey, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, Spike Lee, Roberta Flack, Rev. Jesse Jackson, Rev. Al Sharpton and Houston’s former husband, Bobby Brown, were among those in attendance. Brown and his entourage later left the church during the service, but there are conflicting reports as to why he left. Gabrielle Union Defends Decision To Attend Clive Davis’ Party After Whitney Houston’s Tragic Death

Was she wrong? Gabrielle Union has defended her decision to attend Clive Davis’ annual pre-Grammy Awards party last Saturday just hours after the death of Whitney Houston: “I think if you weren’t there, I could understand [being upset]. We made a judgment call after [P. Diddy] and Clive talked to the family and they said, ‘Please go,’ basically to provide a more balanced view of Whitney’s life.” Gabrielle also revealed that Whitney’s friends and family were angry that focus had been shifted to her drug addiction rather than celebrating her life. Chaka Khan blasted Clive Davis for hosting the party with Whitney’s body in the same building. Was it wrong for Gabrielle and other celebs to attend? Source More On Bossip! Whitney Houston Memorial Service Off, Funeral Planned for Saturday

The earlier reports are true: Whitney Houston will be laid to rest this Saturday in her native city of Newark, New Jersey. The service will take place at the New Hope Baptist Church, the same locale in which Houston (and cousin Dionne Warwick) sang in the choir as a child. Sources say the family wants to keep this event as private as possible and will limit capacity to no more than 300 guests. Meanwhile, Newark Mayor Cory Booker has come out and shot down talk of a public memorial, saying of rumors that one would take place later this week: “The Houston family has no plans to set up a public viewing at the Prudential Center this Friday. In compliance with the family’s wishes, the city is not moving forward with any public ceremony.” Across the country, of course, citizens and celebrities continue to celebrate the singer’s life in their own ways. LeAnn Rimes, for example, sang a tribute to Whitney last night.

Tony Bennett Pushes for Legalization of Drugs

In the wake of Whitney Houston’s death, most celebrities are reacting with nothing but condolences and kind words about the iconic singer. Some, however, are speaking out in more detail, with Celine Dion telling Good Morning America today that the celebrity culture itself bears some responsibility for Whitney’s demise. Tony Bennett, meanwhile, has taken a different, surprising tact. At Clive Davis’ annual Grammy Awards party, held just hours after Houston passed away, the legendary artist went off on a different topic. “First it was Michael Jackson, then Amy Winehouse, now, the magnificent Whitney Houston,” he said. “I’d like every person in this room to campaign to legalize drugs. Let’s legalize drugs like they did in Amsterdam. No one’s hiding or sneaking around corners to get it. They go to a doctor to get it.” Not sure if that would have saved any of the aforementioned lives, but it’s always an interesting debate. Where do you stand? Should America legalize drugs?
