‘American Idol’ Competitor ‘The Voice Of America’ Coming Next Spring

Mark Burnett-produced show will pair singers with celebrity mentors. By Gil Kaufman Mark Burnett Photo: Frederick M. Brown/ Getty Images “American Idol” has ruled the TV landscape for almost a decade, drawing the biggest small-screen ratings of any show and quickly dispatching a series of wannabe competitors. But for next season, NBC has teamed up with “Survivor” heavyweight producer Mark Burnett to launch what could be the most serious challenge to the “Idol” throne yet. According to The Hollywood Reporter , NBC is aiming to steal the thunder of both “Idol” and Fox’s other upcoming reality singing show, Simon Cowell’s “The X Factor,” with a singing competition tentatively called “The Voice of America.” The show is based on the #1 program in the Netherlands, “The Voice of Holland,” which has reportedly put up some of the biggest ratings in Dutch TV history, steamrolling that country’s versions of “Idol” and “X Factor.” The new singing program is slated to premiere next spring, potentially going up against “Idol” and getting a jump on the fall launch of the first season of the American version of “The X Factor.” “Voice” will feature a panel of four celebrity coaches, who will sit with their backs to the contestants during the audition rounds in order to focus on their voices, not their looks. If they approve of the performance, they will push a button that will send the singer to the next round, claiming them as one of their students. If more than one judge likes a singer, that singer gets to choose which celebrity will be his or her coach. “Somebody will show up with all the right moves and look like a star, but their voice is only good, not great, and they don’t get chosen,” Burnett explained. “You’re dealing only with your sense of hearing — do you believe this voice is worthy of your commitment? The coaches have skin in the game and will be a part of the careers of these young performers after the show.” After the four teams are set, the coaches will mentor the contestants and pit the teams against one another, with viewers picking the winner. At times, the mentors will also place two team members against each other, giving them the same song to sing in front of the studio audience in order to decide which one they would like to keep developing. The final performance rounds, featuring the top vote getters from each team, will air live. The winner will receive a recording contract. The heat from the new kid on the block comes as “Idol” continues to tinker with its formula. In addition to the previously announced changes to its format, Entertainment Weekly reported on Monday that after the 325 Hollywood-round contenders were whittled down to 60, the whole crew moved to Las Vegas, where the remaining singers have been rehearsing to perform Beatles songs on the stage where Cirque du Soleil performs its Beatles homage, “Love.” New in-house mentor Interscope boss Jimmy Iovine has not only been providing advice on the new “American Idol,” but has brought along a group of mega-producers to guide the singers as well. Among the knob twiddlers offering advice: Alex da Kid (“Love the Way You Lie”), Tricky Stewart (“Baby”), Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins (“Telephone”), Polow da Don (“Turnin’ Me On”) and Jim Jonsin (“Whatever You Like”). Sandra Bullock, Oprah Winfrey Among 2011 Oscar Present

Halle Berry, Jeff Bridges also on the newly announced list of celebrities who will hand out trophies at the big event. By Jocelyn Vena Sandra Bullock Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images Sandra Bullock took home a Best Actress trophy at the 2010 Oscars for her acclaimed turn in “The Blind Side,” and now the star will be on hand to present an award at next year’s big event when it takes place on February 27. Oscar nominee Oprah Winfrey and Oscar winners Jeff Bridges, Halle Berry and Marisa Tomei also are part of the list of 2011 Academy Awards presenters that the show’s producers released on Monday. More Oscar presenters are expected to be unveiled in the coming weeks, while the nominees will be announced on January 25. Meanwhile, the nominees for the Golden Globes were revealed on Tuesday, with films like “The Social Network” and “Tangled” getting nods. Oscar night will be hosted by Anne Hathaway and James Franco , with the latter actor also figuring to play an even more prominent part in the ceremony. The 32-year-old is considered a lock to nab a Best Actor nomination for his turn as a trapped hiker in “127 Hours,” the Danny Boyle-directed drama that’s also expected to compete for Best Picture honors. The 28-year-old Hathaway, meanwhile, remains a long shot in the Best Actress category for her role in “Love & Other Drugs,” which received mixed reviews and reeled in just $14 million over the extended Thanksgiving holiday. Hiring Franco and Hathaway as hosts certainly marks a strategic turn by the Academy, which has long been accused of being out of touch with the young pop-culture mainstream. A quick scan of Oscar history shows that, over the last two decades, no previous host has been younger than 40 when emceeing the show. Most recently, 64-year-old Steve Martin and 51-year-old Alec Baldwin assumed co-hosting duties, notching the event’s best ratings in five years. The 83rd Academy Awards will air live from Los Angeles on ABC. Related Photos The Evolution Of: Sandra Bullock

Cameron Diaz And Her Tight Pants

I’m kinda glad these pictures of Cameron Diaz are a little blurry, she’s not exactly a spring chicken anymore, I don’t think she was ready to have her picture taken and it shows. She still looks good in her tight outfit and all, I think she can stand to lose about 180 lbs of baseball playing dead weight, but other than that she’s still got it. I think that after a certain age celebrities should only be photographed with blurry lenses, it’s just better for everyone.

‘Tron: Legacy’ Premiere Attended By A-List Stars

Will Ferrell, Tom Cruise and Joe Jonas were among the celebrities who turned up at the Hollywood gala for the sci-fi sequel. By Ryan J. Downey Will Ferrell at the “Tron: Legacy” premiere Photo: John Sciulli/ Getty Images HOLLYWOOD — An entire block of Hollywood Blvd. was virtually transformed into the computer world of grids and gladiators on Saturday at the premiere of “Tron: Legacy.” Blue lights, lasers, smoke machines, white-clad “Sirens,” black-bob-wigged publicists brandishing light discs and at least one light cycle adorned a blue carpet leading to Disney’s El Capitan Theater as hundreds of fans looked on. Will Ferrell, Tom Cruise, Joe Jonas, Ana de la Reguera (“Cowboys and Aliens”), Patrick Fugit (“Almost Famous”), Jena Malone (“Saved!”) and the film’s stars, including Jeff Bridges, Olivia Wilde and Garret Hedlund, turned up to watch the sequel to “Tron,” the forward-thinking 1982 classic that pit man vs. machine in a virtual reality. With premiere production values that would make an arena rock band blush, the atmosphere was as charged as a “Tron” arena battle. “I don’t want to downplay [the first film’s premiere] because it was what it was then, but this? The excitement level is that much more and I think that’s truly the ‘Tron’ legacy,” said Bruce Boxleitner, who played Alan Bradley and his computerized counterpart, the title character, in both the original and the sequel. “After twenty-something years, I’d go, ‘Well, I don’t know. If they haven’t made [a sequel] by now …’ [And then] we got the word. I was in right from the get-go.” “Tron: Legacy” director Joseph Kosinski — who will next tackle the re-imagining of another Disney sci-fi property from the ’80s, “The Black Hole” — was brimming with pride now that the long-in-gestation project was finally see the (blue) light of day. “It’s been a three-year process with thousands of talented people all over the world working on this movie with me. I’m really proud of the team and proud of the film. I’m excited for people to finally see it,” he said. Garrett Hedlund plays Sam Flynn, son of Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges) from the first film, who sets out to find his missing father and ends up transported to the world of “Tron.” The 26-year-old actor has been on something of a journey himself: He’s got “Country Strong” debuting this month and just wrapped “On the Road” that morning before hopping on a plane for the “Tron: Legacy” premiere. “It’s a wonderful night, isn’t it?” he beamed, while admitting to being a bit exhausted. Taking in the grand spectacle unfolding on the blue carpet, he added, “I’ve tried to imagine what this night would be like but, up until now, I’ve never been more surprised.” Welsh actor Michael Sheen — whom astute “Twilight” fans still recognize without the getup he wears as Aro — plays Castor in “Tron: Legacy,” and shared Hedlund and Boxleitner’s awe at the “spare no expense” vibe of the premiere and the general marketing rollout behind the picture. “It’s nice to know that Disney has so much confidence in the film and they’re prepared to get behind it so much,” said Sheen. “I’ve seen the film. I can see why they’re so confident. When you’ve got a film like this, I guess that’s the time to bring out your big guns. It’s great. I love the fact that the look of the premiere reflects the look of the film as well, ’cause that’s such a strong part of the ‘Tron’ world. I’m a fan of these films more than I am an actor in them in a way. So it’s just great to be a part of it.” The models dressed as “sirens” who stood on the blue carpet with stoic seriousness — even as Will Ferrell attempted to get one of them to crack a smile — were joined by an actress who portrayed one of the sirens in the film, Beau Garrett. She was accompanied by her parents and two best friends at the premiere. “This is crazy. It’s so fun. It’s really kind of lovely,” laughed Garrett. “[My parents] are like, losing their minds. My dad is beaming right now. So this is a trip! I had no idea what I was getting into.” Daft Punk, whose music lights up the film’s soundtrack, walked the carpet as well while their dance-music contemporary, Boys Noize, served as DJ at the afterparty. “Tron: Legacy” hits theaters nationwide this Friday. Dr. Dre’s ‘Kush’ Video And Other Comeback Clips

Like memorable videos from Jay-Z, Eminem and T.I., the legendary producer’s latest work heralds his return to the game. By Paul Cantor Dr. Dre Photo: Johnny Nunez/ WireImage Dr. Dre’s video for “Kush,” the lead single off Detox, hit the Net on Friday (December 10), and the clip seems to confirm the much-delayed album will be released in the near future. It’s only been a little more than a decade since the doctor dropped his last project, after all. But seeing the new video, featuring Snoop Dogg and Akon, brought to mind some other recent comeback stories in hip-hop. Here, we give you a rundown of the videos that accompanied them. Eminem, “We Made You” Released in 2009, “We Made You” was Marshall Mathers’ first solo look since his ’05 Encore album. In a sense, he picked up right where he left off, bashing celebrities and mocking the public’s love affair with pop culture. But the plan backfired, and Em left the impression that the only one obsessed with pop culture — dated pop culture, at that — was Em. As a result, his Relapse was critically panned as a comeback album; it wasn’t until this year’s Recovery that Eminem truly re-established his place in music . Jay-Z, “Show Me What You Got” Hov announced his retirement from rap as a solo artist in 2003 with The Black Album. But only three years later, he returned with a new album, Kingdom Come and a video for its lead single, “Show Me What You Got.” The Just Blaze-produced track compelled director F. Gary Gray, known for being selective about his projects, to helm the video. Filmed it in Monaco, Jay enlisted race car drivers Danica Patrick and Dale Earnhardt Jr for the well-received clip. Kanye West, “Power” Inspired by director Marco Brambilla’s “Civilization” installation at New York’s Standard Hotel, the video for ‘Ye’s “Power” was dubbed “Portrait of Power.” Less a music video than a piece of moving art, the visual showed Kanye surrounded by angels and assorted religious imagery. Coming off “Taylor-gate,” its epic quality matched the brooding scope of the song and it proved to be the right approach as critics and fans alike, lapped it up. T.I., “I’m Back” T.I. had served out a yearlong prison stint, when he returned in April with “I’m Back.” The video found the Atlanta rapper getting reacquainted with his life on the outside, namely foreign cars, expensive jewelry and the ‘hood. Rapping with an American flag as the backdrop, Tip seemed to be saying, ‘I’m still a shining example of the American Dream.’ Or, perhaps it was an allusion to career plans gone awry, an American Dream deferred. The MC’s comeback has hit some speed bumps, as his No Mercy album was released this week while the rapper serves out a new 11-month prison sentence. Dr. Dre “Still D.R.E.” “Kush” isn’t the first video Dre made fans wait umpteen years for. The super-producer did the same with “Still D.R.E.,” which was the lead song from 1999’s The Chronic 2001. It had been seven years since he’d dropped The Chronic. Clearly, Dre likes to take his time. The “Still D.R.E.” clip, featuring Snoop Dogg, found the doctor celebrating low-riders, scantily clad women and, of course, gangsta music. What’s your favorite comeback video?
