The 40th annual People’s Choice Awards aired live from Los Angeles last night. And, yes, Justin Timberlake took home three trophies while also thanking his beautiful wife . Mindy Kaling is featured this month on the cover of her first-ever national fashion magazine. Cause for celebration, right? Yes, but also for controversy. Kaling is one of four actress featured for the publication’s Women in TV issue, along with Zooey Deschanel ( New Girl ), Amy Poehler (Parks and Recreation) and Allison Williams (Girls)… … but she’s the only one of those four to be photographed up close and also in black and white. This could be no big deal. Like the Melissa McCarthy Elle cover that generated chatter, it’s possible Kalig was in on the picture selection and some are making a big fuss over nothing. But Julia Sonenshein of The Gloss doesn’t see it that way. “For all we know, Kaling directed the whole shoot. Does it matter? The message is still the same: we treat a certain type of woman differently than the other celebrities in her cohort,” Sonenshein writes . “Kaling is different based on an arbitrary set of rules, so we’ll treat her as such.” Elle, meanwhile, is standing by its depiction of Kaling. “Mindy looks sexy, beautiful and chic,” the magazine says in a statement. “We think it is a striking and sophisticated cover and are thrilled to celebrate her in our Women in TV Issue.” No word yet from Kaling, but here’s a look at the other three women/covers. What do you think? Is this a worthy scandal or much complaining over nothing? UPDATE : Mindy has now Tweeted a response: “I love my @ELLEmagazine cover. It made me feel glamorous & cool. And if anyone wants to see more of my body, go on thirteen dates with me.”
Plus-size models and modeling have gained a lot of traction in 2013, as they a purpose beyond marketing plus-size clothing to a growing market. They also provide women with a more diverse range of bodies to look up to, which potentially improves self-confidence, body image and social norms. So if we have plus-size models … should plus-size Barbies be next? That’s the question posed recently by Plus-Size-Modeling (dot) com on Facebook … The illustration of a plus-size Barbie doll actually comes from a contest on Worth1000.com, a site where artists compete in daily creative competitions. The image, created by artist bakalia, won a contest called “Feeding Time 9.” But when re- posted last week by Plus-Size-Modeling (dot) com, the depiction of Barbie with a double chin and a curvier physique sparked debate. Over 35,000 people have “liked” it, but many criticize it, asking whether society should be praising being overweight any more than being too skinny. Maria Kang has yet to weigh in … but we know where she stands. “No one is naturally fat for gods sake, that’s sending the wrong message to girls that it’s ok to look like this and be unhealthy…” said one commenter. Another noted, “Imo this is horrible. Maybe make her a little fuller, but in no way promote obesity. Triple chins?? Really?? Im a curvy girl, but come on this is ridiculous.” The debate mirrors one waged in the fashion world when Curvy Girl lingerie kicked off a campaign to share images of “regular” women in their underwear. Because several of those models were overweight, the campaign was criticized for allegedly encouraging unhealthy habits and promoting obesity. There were also those who wondered aloud where the “average” size bodies are. In other words, bodies that are neither “plus-size” nor a size 0. As one commenter noted beneath the Barbie image on Plus-Size-Modeling, “Wish there was an ‘average’ Barbie. Not skinny, not obese. Normal.” On that note, artist Nickolay Lamm recently created a 3-D model of an “average” Barbie-like doll, based on CDC estimates of an average 19-year-old. “If we criticize skinny models, we should at least be open to the possibility that Barbie may negatively influence young girls as well,” Lamm said. Check out that artist’s rendering of ” normal Barbie ” below, as well as another conceptualization of Barbie without makeup … she’s really a hot topic!
About three weeks after being diagnosed with breast cancer , Amy Robach posted an open letter to fans on the Good Morning America website yesterday. The reporter unfortunately said physicians have found a second malignancy, but added that her “prognosis is good” and she remains in positive spirits overall. “Physically and emotionally I have been through the ringer, but I am emerging on the other side so much stronger. I have a greater appreciation for life, for health and for how such simple acts of kindness can be so incredibly powerful,” the 40-year-old wrote. “I am looking through a different lens now…and I am thankful for that as well. There was my life before October 30th and now my life after.” Robach, the wife of actor Andrew Shue, actually found out about the lump in her breast via an ABC-sponsored mammogram and hopes to return to work on December 2. “My cancer had spread to my sentinel lymph node, but not beyond, so I will have more treatments ahead of me, but none that will take me out of work,” she says. Amy then concluded her note with a message to supporters. “I couldn’t be more excited to get back to work,” she wrote. “Your support and love has made this all an experience that has given me the strength to fight the fear and hopefully help others do the same in the days/weeks/years to come!” We wish Robach nothing but the best.
Kim Kardashian is doing her part to help those affected by last week’s deadly typhoon in the Philippines . Her pretty small part, that is. The reality star announced on her blog Thursday that she’s auctioning off clothing on eBay , with the money raised being sent to a charity that benefits those in this ravaged area. Kim Kardashian Auctioning Off Clothes For Charity A very good idea and a very good cause, right? Absolutely. “The proceeds will go directly to the communities they’re serving in the Philippines and will help typhoon survivors get access to medical care and ultimately save lives,” Kardashian writes on her Celebuzz blog. But Kim fails to mention the fine print on the auction pages: only 10 percent of the final sales price will go to the International Medical Corps. A whole 10 percent. “My prayers and thoughts are with those affected by the typhoon. Check out my eBay auction and support those who need out help in the Philippines.” While her clothes will certainly yield a lot of money and even 10 percent of that is better than nothing, somehow it seems like a wasted opportunity to do more. To learn more about the International Medical Corps, visit internationalmedicalcorps.org. You may find that you wish to simply give directly to that charity instead of lining Kim’s pockets with 90 percent of your purchase from her auction. Really. Hasn’t she made enough off the Kim Kardashian sex tape already?
It is all over for The Jonas Brothers. They confirmed today that they are officially broken up . Because Joe Jonas has a problem with substance abuse? It remains unclear. All we know for certain, according to the siblings, is that the decision to break up was “unanimous.” It was also heartbreaking for a number of fans. Many have taken to Twitter and expressed their sadness/outrage; some with a single word (“NOOOOO!”) and some with the lamenting of their childhood’s demise, noting that Miley Cyrus is now naked a lot, Zac Efron is a drug addict and The Jonas Brothers are no more. Sad times all over the Internet, indeed. Check out our favorite Twitter reactions to this news below: The Jonas Brothers Split, Twitter Reacts
Move over, Barneys New York. Macy’s has also been slapped with a lawsuit by actor Robert Brown, who accuses the luxury store of racial profiling. Rob Brown: Racially Profiled at Macy’s? The New York Post reports that Brown, best known for starring opposite Sean Connery in Finding Forrester , has filled a civil lawsuit against Macy’s. He is also suing the New York Police Department, claiming that he was unlawfully searched by undercover police officers there on June 8, 2013. Brown, 29, was stopped after making a purchase at the Sunglass Hut store located inside Macy’s flagship location in New York City’s Herald Square. His story sounds very similar to that of the college student claiming he was arrested for buying a belt at Barneys in a story that went viral last week. According to the Manhattan Supreme Court suit, the African-American Brown presented his ID to cops but “was told that his identification was false.” Brown says he was told that he “could not afford to make such an expensive purchase” and was arrested and detained before being cut loose. The Brooklyn resident was not charged in relation to the incident. Brown’s incident at Macy’s has drawn parallels to that of 19-year-old college student Trayon Christian and 21-year-old nursing student Kayla Phillips. Both filed suits against Barneys and the NYPD in the last week. “It’s an epidemic. It’s unbelievable,” Nicholas Elefterakis, Brown’s attorney, said of the alleged altercations, which have even led to criticism of Jay Z . The rapper, who is set to launch a collection with Barneys, is being urged via petition to step away from the project. He has declined to do so … yet. As for Macy’s, the store has responded to the claim. See below: Macy’s Denies Involvement In Alleged Race Stop
Lady Gaga has been on the receiving end of multiple lawsuits, but this time, she is taking it to a clothing designer who has been making “Gagajeans.” Designer Philip Scott‘s “sexitized easy access jeans” feature a horizontal zipper across the crotch area … totally not trying to utilize Gaga’s name. “When you see someone real fine-looking wearing them,” he promises on his website, “your mind can only go one place and that is to the zipper.” Scott recently filed a trademark request to market the pants as “Gagajeans,” but was quickly slammed by a letter from the Lady’s attorneys on October 1. Attorneys for the singer, who released her ARTPOP album cover Monday, wrote: “It has come to our client’s attention that you have filed an application to register the mark GAGAJEANS and are using the GAGAJEANS mark in connection with the jeans.” “In particular, you have misappropriated the dominant feature of our client’s mark, GAGA, and merely added the generic term ‘jeans.’ “Your use and registration of the GAGAJEANS mark is likely to cause confusion, mistake, and deception of consumers that Lady Gaga is affiliated with [the product].” According to Gaga’s attorneys, Smith also commented on Lady Gaga videos attempting to direct fans to his website, gagajeans.co (which has since been taken down). As such, they demand that Scott abandon his trademark request, deactivate his website, cease and desist making the jeans, destroy any prototypes and more. “If we do not hear from you by October 10,” the attorneys write, “we will assume that you have no desire to resolve this amicably and we will proceed accordingly without any further notice to you.” But Smith insists he did nothing wrong: “Gaga is a word that has many meanings … But none of those meanings are of a rich female singer who uses her wealth and power and position to harass, bully and slander in order to get her way.” “Actually, I guess that could be the meaning of ‘Lady Gaga!’” Well played there. He goes on: “All I know is that I applied for the trademark Gagajeans and when they did the trademark search it showed that no one was using it and that I could apply for it.” “I have never in any comments or actions tried to fool anyone into believing Lady Gaga is in any way connected to or associated with Gagajeans.” “Lady Gaga just wants to trademark the name ‘Gaga’ and has not or cannot,” he claims. “This is not my fault. If she had trademarked the name ‘Gaga,’ then I would not have applied for the name Gagajeans for my trademark.” “I will not cancel my application for the Gagajeans trademark. If the application is denied by the trademark office (which is likely), I will not use it.” “But until then, take a chill pill and wait for the trademark office to do their job!”
Tina Fey suffered a brief but obvious nipple slip at the 2013 Emmy Awards, sparking an onslaught of Twitter commentary at the acclaimed actress’ expense. If you blinked, or aren’t an eagle-eyed viewer whose goal in life is to see celebrity nipples on screen, you probably missed the wardrobe malfunction. But it happened. Oh, did it ever. Some might even say it was one of the more exciting or at least interesting things that happened during a broadcast derided by critics as bland. In any case, when the comedian took the stage with Tracey Wigfield to accept their award for Best Comedy Writing, she flashed more than her trophy. At least she of all people can take a joke. See the Tina Fey nipple slip and some of the notable reactions to this unexpected viral event after the jump: Many dubbed Lena Dunham worst dressed at the event. But at least she won’t be labeled least dressed, are we right? Yes. That (dis)honor is all Tina’s. It lit up Twitter like no other event that night. While we’re not talking Miley Cyrus levels of buzz here, but for the Emmys, this was a significant deal. Thank you, Internet. In the wake of Jeff Daniels’ shocking Emmy Awards win last night for Best Actor in a Drama – for his role as Will McAvoy on The Newsroom – some genius World Wide Web user has mashed up the star’s acceptance speech with the concluding scene of the Breaking Bad Season 4 episode, “Crawl Space.” Because, no offense to Mr. Daniels, but isn’t this how we all felt after learning that Bryan Cranston somehow did not come out on top? What else is there to do but collapse in stunned, horrified laughter? Watch Cranston’s iconic character do just that as Daniels says some stuff on stage now: Jeff Daniels Wins Emmy, Heisenberg Reacts
