These are tough times in the life of pop icon Britney Spears. At this point, it doesn’t appear that the situation is as dire as Britney’s infamous 2007 meltdown , but that’s only because the singer is older, wiser, and surrounded by a slightly better support network. Back in April, Spears checked into a mental health facility , ostensibly because she was distraught over her father’s potentially fatal health issues. Now, it appears that the situation is more complicated than that. Reports of Britney’s efforts to bring an end to the conservatorship that has governed for life for over a decade have brought about a resurgence of the #FreeBritney movement, which was initially created over 10 years ago by fans concerned for Spears’ well-being. It now looks as though the 37-year-old may have been committed against her will, and it seems that parties who do not have her best interest at heart are going to great lengths to maintain control over her life. Sadly it seems that Spears can no longer trust her father, who is the main executor of the conservatorship. And she was recently forced to file for a restraining order against Sam Lufti, an ex-manager whose efforts to exploit Spears for financial gain have been well-documented. Britney is clearly fighting a battle for her freedom against some very stiff opposition. But fortunately, she’s not doing it entirely on her own. On Thursday, Spears posted a photo of herself smiling alongside boyfriend Sam Asghari. She captioned the pic, “I love this man.” Fans found encouragement in the pic for a number of reasons: For one thing, it’s good to see Spears smiling again. More importantly, it’s reassuring to know that she and Sam are still going strong, as many Spears worshippers consider this to be her healthiest relationship to date. And Britney will need all the help she can get in the months to come. TMZ previously reported that Britney’s mom is going to war on her daughter’s behalf and has joined the battle to bring the conservatorship to an end. But even with such a formidable ally on her side, Britney is facing an uphill battle. Insiders tell TMZ that Brit is “keeping her chin up” but that “things are far from well” in her life. She’s always on the lookout for the next big thing — and it looks like she may have found it in Sofia Richie. As you’re probably aware, Sofia has been dating Scott Disick for quite some time. This is surprising for a number of reasons, not the least of which is that Scott is 35 and Sofia is 20. A 15-year age difference isn’s always a big deal, but when one person is a father of three and the other is an aspiring model who’s not yet old enough to buy booze, well — you can probably see why fans didn’t expect it to last. Thursday’s season finale of Grey’s Anatomy was a wild episode that picked up in the immediate aftermath of DeLuca taking the fall for Meredith’s insurance fraud. If you watch Grey’s Anatomy online , you know that Meredith and Alex were inside a chamber with very little oxygen to save their patient. For that reason, Mer could not run after the cops to tell them it was her who made the dumb decision to doctor the insurance documents. Meredith didn’t get much time to speak about her issues because Alex wanted to know the truth about Jo. Surely Meredith would allow Jo to tell him in her own time, right? Wrong. Meredith filled in all the blanks, and Alex got progressively madder with every beat of the story. But Meredith told Alex that neither of them could give Jo the support she needs, and that’s why she agreed to get some help. Meredith rushed to the conference room with Bailey and Catherine, telling them that she was the one who should be arrested. Alex and Richard appeared to say that they were all part of the con and that’s when things got gnarly. “What can I do? You’re fired,” Bailey said. “All three of you. You’re fired.” Meredith rushed home and told her kids that she had to go do something, but she would be back soon. Was this her saying goodbye to them? It certainly seemed that way. Mer found herself visiting DeLuca in jail, telling him that she needed to clean up the stuff she caused. “As much as this terrifies me, I love you too,” Meredith said as she walked away, presumably to tell the cops the truth. Meanwhile, the fog was causing chaos for the staff and patients on their way to the hospital. Owen was stuck in a traffic jam with the blood donor, and only Levi could calm her down. An ambulance crew stepped in to save the day, and all of them made it to the hospital to save the patients’ life. Then there was Jackson and Maggie. The pair were on their camping trip, but realized they needed to get to safety. Jackson ultimately told Maggie he would be back in ten minutes, but he never returned, prompting Maggie to go after him. What the heck happened? Teddy started the hour off in labor, and ended it with a child and back in a relationship with Owen. Poor Tom was at home building all the baby furniture. Yeah, he’s going to find himself without a girlfriend in the fall. Yikes, right?! Love was also in the air. Amelia confirmed to Link that she was not getting straight into a relationship after ditching Owen. The reason? She wanted to find out who she was out of a relationship. It’s a fair reason, and Link was happy because Amelia said she was not ruling anything out. The other relationship that flourished involved Levi and Nico. Nico realized he was acting like an ass, and set out to get his man back. It was easy, and Levi closed the hour coming out to his mom. What did YOU think of the season finale? Sometimes, even terrible people make good points. Take, for example, Derick Dillard’s latest efforts to defend himself and his troubled marriage. Sure, Derick may have cheated on Jill . And it’s true that Jill quit Counting On as a gesture of solidarity after Derick got fired, thus leaving her family of four with no source of income. And yes, she’s generally subservient to him in every way, which is always an uncomfortable arrangement to behold. But when Derick defended himself against accusations that he’s a terrible husband this week, he actually made some decent arguments on his own behalf. It all started when Derick posted the above photo on his Instagram page. “Loved spending some quality time with my oldest son, who accompanied me as I wrapped up some stuff on campus today 🙂 #futurelawho,” he captioned the photo. Derick is in law school , which is a wildly time-consuming endeavor, and it’s nice that he’s found a way to combine his studies with his duties as a father. The only problem is that that post went up on Mother’s Day, and nowhere else on his social media did Derick make any mention of Jill of the holiday. Not surprisingly, fans were quick to call Derick out on this oversight. “Why don’t you post a Happy mothers day post for your wife? I mean she carried YOUR CHILDREN in her body for 9 months, and had to have a C-section(which is a major surgery) for the both of them,” wrote one follower. “Selfish and ungrateful of a husband much?” the Mother’s Day enthusiast continued. Like the rest of the Duggar clan, Derick usually ignores online trash talk. But apparently, this time it was more than he was willing to put up with. “When I post something, people say ‘why don’t you tell her yourself instead of posting about it’ and when you don’t post people say ‘you’re ungrateful’… can’t please everyone,” Dillard responded. Like we said, as much as we hate to admit it, the man has a point here. It’s a conundrum that basically every social media user is confronted with from time to time, as though there’s some specific set of laws about what should be shared and what shoud remain private. Would it have been nice if Derick had given his devoted wife a Mother’s Day shout-out? Of course, but it’s also perfectly okay if the Dillards decided to mark the occasion privately. We don’t relish having to defend Derick freakin’ Dillard, so if you’re gonna trash-talk the guy going forward, please focus on one of his many glaring character flaws so that we can join in, too.
