Cops Fired After Calling Black Neighborhoods Target Practice Three Miami police officers have been fired for making racist comments on a group chat about using Miami’s black neighborhoods for target practice reports The Star Tribune : Officers Kevin Bergnes, Miguel Valdes and Bruce Alcin were let go on Dec. 23, after an internal affairs investigation concluded that they violated department policies, said the Miami Herald ( http://hrld.us/2hxDZZp ), citing documents it obtained. The remarks angered local civil rights activists keeping tabs on a department that is currently scrutinized by the U.S. Department of Justice for a pattern of excessive force. The Miami police department confirmed that officers Bergnes, Valdes and Alcin were fired, but did not explain the reasons behind the dismissals. #BlackLivesMatter
SMH…. Dylann Roof To Face New Competency Hearing Dylann Roof will have a new competency hearing ahead of his sentencing. The murderer who was convicted on all 33 counts in relation to that 2015 Charleston church shooting, will undergo a second hearing to determine if he’s competent to stand trial at his sentencing. Roof, who wants to represent himself during sentencing, was found guilty of nine counts of hate crimes resulting in death, three counts of hate crimes involving an attempt to kill, nine counts of obstructing the exercise of religion resulting in death, three counts of that charge with an attempt to kill, and nine counts of using a firearm to commit murder during a crime of violence. Jurors will decide if he deserves the death penalty or life in prison. USA Today reports: Standby counsel for Dylann Roof, 22, filed a motion under seal Thursday asking Judge Richard Gergel of U.S. District Court in Charleston determine whether the defendant is competent to proceed with the sentencing phase. Gergel granted that motion and scheduled the competency hearing for Monday, a federal holiday, with jurors expected to reconvene for the sentencing phase Tuesday. The motion came one day after a hearing in which Roof again said he would represent himself during the sentencing. He told the court he planned to offer an opening statement but will not call witnesses or submit evidence in his defense […] With sentencing set to begin in five days, Roof again has dismissed the lawyers, a move that prevents them from submitting evidence that he suffers from a mental defect. Evaluations and testimony from mental health experts in the sentencing phase often are considered key factors that might persuade jurors to vote for a life sentence over execution. In court filings, Roof has indicated he will not call mental health experts, reversing a course his lawyers had planned earlier. Hopefully, this murderous trash is ruled competent before his sentencing in January.

Former NFL Player Keion Carpenter Dies After Falling Into A Coma Ultimately, the ones who grieve the most when someone passes are said person’s family and friends. That said, we sure are pained to have to report yet another death of a public figure. Ex-Atlanta Falcon Keion Carpenter has died at the age of 39 in a Miami hospital after collapsing and hitting his head while playing with his son according to the Baltimore Sun . Carpenter’s cousin, Jamila Smith, recounts the incident that lead to his untimely demise: “They were running to the car when (Carpenter) slipped, fell, hit his head and slipped into a coma. It was just a freak accident,” she said. “He was always healthy; he went to the doctor, ate well and worked out.” Keion was a beloved native son of Baltimore, Maryland and the city’s mayor, Catherine Pugh, released a statement about his passing: “[He] won our hearts as a beloved community champion with an uncompromising will to reclaim neglected neighborhoods and improve the lives of the underprivileged.” “Keion knew the power of his platform, and used his opportunity and talents to not only inspire, but transform the lives of thousands of children and families,” Prayers up for Keion Carpenter’s immediate family, football family, friends, and those in Baltimore who’s lives he touched.
