Karyn White Blasts BET For Not Letting Her Perform At Soul Train Awards This past weekend’s Soul Train Awards was a joy to watch for millions of fans of Black music but one “Superwoman” wasn’t too happy after BET decided against inviting her to the big show. Singer Karyn White recently blasted the network for not allowing her to sing her own song at the Soul Train Awards during Babyface’s tribute. The singer acknowledges Fantasia did a wonderful job but she should have been allowed to be on stage as well according to a new Facebook video … “I’ve been getting bombarded with questions from family, fans, friends. I’ve been getting tweets, texts. Just people calling me: ‘Karen, why weren’t you on the show?’ ‘Are you okay?’ ‘Is everything alright?’ ‘Why weren’t you there?’ ‘Everyone else was there; we wanted to see you.’ Good question. I. Don’t. Know. I never got a call from ‘Face or BET, or Centric or Soul Train music award affiliates–nobody. So I don’t know.” “I thought Fantasia did an amazing job. She’s a bad girl. She put it down. It has nothing to do with Fantasia. It’s really just respect. The fact that Kenny wrote the song, and LA, and Daryl Simmons, but Karyn White made it a hit. And I believe my fans deserve to see me sing the song.” Fans of the singer bombarded her with questions about her whereabouts during the stellar performance: Do you think Karyn should have been allowed to perform her hit song “Superwoman” on the Soul Train Awards?? CNN Disrespects Freddie Gray CNN has been really disappointing in a lot of the ways they’ve covered police brutality in this country and today is no different. In an article about the trial of the officers accused of murdering Freddie Gray, writers Ann O’Neill and Aaron Cooper used these words to describe the victim: The April 19 death of Freddie Gray, the son of an illiterate heroin addict, made him a symbol of the black community’s distrust of police. His name is now invoked with those of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri; Tamir Rice in Cleveland, Ohio; Eric Garner in New York; and other black men who died during encounters with white police officers. In Gray’s case, three of the officers charged are white; three black. “The son of an illiterate heroin addict” The. Son. Of. An. Illiterate. Heroin. Addict. Like, that’s how they chose to introduce him. Not Freddie Gray “innocent victim” or anything like that. Nope. “Son of an illiterate heroin addict.” How does this have any relevance to the case? What in the hell is the point? It’s another way to vilify and demean the life of a Black person in this country. It’s absurd that this was written and approved by an editor. Shame on you, CNN. Way to put the person who was killed on trial. This is racist victim-blaming at its worst. And, as always, we’re not the only people to notice the racism.
