Adultification Bias: Study Shows Black Girls Are Treated More Harshly Than White Peers Of The Same Age

Source: Vladimir Vladimirov / Getty Study Shows Adults Perceive Black Girls As Less Innocent Than White Girls Of The Same Age Kudos to Jamilia J. Blake and Rebecca Epstein, who recently released their findings in a study on behalf of the Georgetown Law Center on Poverty and Inequality which looked at adultification bias toward young black girls and women. The introduction to the study revealed how Blake and Epstein previously conducted research which resulted in the June 2017 release of Girlhood Interrupted: The Erasure of Black Girls’ Childhood, a report that presented the findings from their quantitative analysis of an form of gendered racial bias against Black girls: adultification – a stereotype in which adults view Black girls as less innocent and more adult-like than their white peers, devoid of any individualized context. The results of that study revealed that adults perceive Black girls as less innocent than white girls as young as 5-9 years old. The set of findings published last week took things a step further. Researchers conducted focus groups with Black women and girls across the country, in towns and cities of various sizes and in different geographic regions, speaking with a range of participants, between the ages of 12 and 60 years old. Many of those who participated shared personal stories revealing harmful consequences of adults misperceiving their age. “Almost all the black girls and women we talked to said they’d experienced adultification bias as children,” report co-author Jamilia Blake said in a statement. “And they overwhelmingly agreed that it led teachers and other adults to treat them more harshly and hold them to higher standards than white girls.” NEW research @GtownLawPovCntr finds that black girls routinely experience “adultification bias”—the perception of Black girls as less innocent. The report features voices of Black women & girls, highlighting their lived experiences, insights & solutions. https://t.co/4t8oRbeLsc pic.twitter.com/fk6kJ3LsWh — Georgetown Law (@GeorgetownLaw) May 15, 2019 One such participant described being stopped by a police officer who did not believe her when she told him she was 15 years old, and handcuffed and fingerprinted her because he insisted that she was too old not to carry identification. “[T]he officer that came and … fingerprinted me — he was like: ‘Well, child, you know, don’t lie to us. And if you tell us the real — your real age and real name, we wouldn’t have to be going through none of this’ ….” (Age group 13-17) Other examples of adultification bias concerned “attitude”: “[E]ven when you see just in general the word ‘attitude’ being applied … it’s usually not applied to white girls. It’s applied to Black girls.” (Age group 20‑29) “[A] Black girl, if she’s right, and she wants to argue about something, she’s always labelled as, like, angry. And especially when it came to teachers and stuff. I would see people like debating with teachers and they would always automatically get into trouble. Because like she has ‘attitude.’ [But] … she’s just like trying to prove that she’s right. And … you can just tell that [to teachers,] automatically, she’s, like, in the wrong, just because.” (Age group 17‑23) “[T]he teacher would say she felt threatened, you know, by me expressing myself in a classroom; like, I was, like, overpowering her when a — a outspoken white person would be [viewed as], ‘Oh,nthey’re intelligent;’ you know?” (Age group 20‑29) How many of these scenarios seem familiar to you? The findings also include participants personal stories of being hypersexualized by adults: “In … sixth grade, … the school nurse, like, ask[ed] my aunt if I was sexually active …. And I was, like, at the time, like, what? Like, what? Nobody has sex. Like, I didn’t know anyone that had sex. And it was so crazy to me. And then just thinking, like, she would never think to ask my [white] friend that.” (Age group 20‑29) The bias the participants described included overreaction and premature criminalization as well. Just consider this story, shared by one of the young women who was interviewed: “I remember even in elementary school I had to transfer to different schools, and the other school didn’t want to take me because I had assault and battery on my record, and the reason I had assault and battery was because … during a, um, a game [at recess], one of the balls, like, hit the girl in the face. Like, I had — I wasn’t [even] taken to the principal’s office …. But they just threw that on my record ….” (Age group 20‑29) Can you imagine? An assault and battery record because of a GAME?!? Just ridiculous. There are so many more personal stories we could share, you can read the entire report HERE.

“LHHATL’s” Stevie J Fears For Daughter Bonnie’s Safety, Asks Judge For Primary Custody & Child Support From Joseline! (Exclusive)

Source: Johnny Louis / Getty Former “Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta” Couple Back In Court Over Toddler Bonnie Bella Reality star Stevie J says he’s concerned for his youngest daughter’s safety and has asked a judge to award him full custody of the girl while accusing his former co-star and lover Joseline Hernandez of purposely cutting him out of their daughter’s life. The former Bad Boy producer filed a flurry of court documents earlier this week alleging that Hernandez committed “parental alienation” after she hightailed it to Miami to shack up with another guy. Jordan said his daughter’s mother won’t let him visit the now three year old, speak to her on the phone or have a say in her day to day upbringing – which are all violations of their paternity agreement. Jordan said that Hernandez has blocked him from doing things like participating in the little girl’s academic life and she refuses to communicate with him about the girl’s development – even their Miami address, his court filing – which was obtained by BOSSIP – states. Interestingly, Jordan also claimed that he fears for Bonnie’s safety and well being, and has asked the judge to appoint a “guardian ad litem” whose job is to represent Bonnie Bella’s best interests and eventually report their findings to the judge. He says he is more financially and mentally stable to care for the little girl, and has a safe and loving home to raise Bonnie in with new wife, Faith Evans, his adult children and extended family, according to court documents. Source: David Becker / Getty Bonnie Bella was born in December 2016 amid a nasty breakup between her parents that devolved into an acrimonious paternity battle. Each side accused the other in family court of drug abuse, cheating and violence. But last year, both Hernandez and Jordan agreed to Hernandez having primary physical custody of Bonnie, with Jordan getting weekend visitation and a say on things like her schooling, healthcare, religion and extracurricular activities, court documents say. The “Leave It To Stevie” star said that Bonnie and his relationship has ultimately suffered because of Hernandez’s actions, and he wants a judge to punish her. He also wants Hernandez to pay child support to him if the judge awards him primary custody. We’ve reached out to both Hernandez and Jordan’s lawyers for comment. A judge has yet to rule on Jordan’s request.

Cops Kill People: Arlington, Texas Cop Fired And Charged With Criminally Negligent Homicide Of Unarmed Black Man

Source: Robert Alexander / Getty Texas Cop Fired For Killing Unarmed Black Man While we’re glad that this cop is facing a real punishment for taking the life of a Black man, we can’t help be wish this was the rule and not the exception. According to NYPost , an Arlington, Texas police officer, Bau Tran, was fired and charged with the criminally negligent homicide of 24-year-old O’Shae Terry last September. Texas isn’t exactly a place where police are held to a standard of accountability when it comes to violence against people, but especially people of color. Tran shot Terry on Sept. 1 after another officer pulled the Forest Hill resident over on a registration violation. After talking for several minutes, body camera footage shows Tran grabbing the passenger-side window of the SUV Terry was driving as it begins to roll up. The officer stepped on to the vehicle’s running board as it started to move, pointed his gun into the SUV and fired multiple shots. Terry later died at a hospital. Tran was initially placed on restrictive duty, but then placed on leave after the grand jury indicted that a$$. Good riddance. Take some of your bacon-scented buddies with you.

Luxury Brand Losers: The Goofies At Gucci Get Slammed For Selling $790 Sikh Style Tone Deaf Turbans

Source: Venturelli/WireImage / Getty Gucci Accused Of Religious/Cultural Appropriation For $790 Sikhi Style Turbans SMH. After all the blackface backlash , Gucci is getting groaned again — this time for selling $790 turbans that are similar in style to the dastaar (turban) worn by members of the Sikh faith. According to Washington Post , the brand originally drew ire from the Sikh community when the luxury designer had a white model walking the runway in a bright blue turban last year: It was styled nearly identically to the traditional headwear of Sikhs, who follow a faith with roots in South Asia, and outrage abounded. The Italian luxury brand was widely panned for not showing the look on “a brown model” and failing to grasp the turban’s significance. “As a Sikh, I see this as a huge sign of disrespect and disregard toward Sikhism,” one person tweeted at the time. Apparently that wasn’t enough to halt production because this week Gucci’s “Indy Full Turban” — described as a “gorgeously crafted turban” that is “ready to turn heads while keeping you in comfort as well as trademark style” — was being sold by Nordstrom for a reported price of $790. As of Wednesday evening, the item was listed as sold out on Nordstrom’s website and the price no longer appeared. The department store and Gucci did not respond to requests for comment from the Washington Post. Meanwhile there’s been a (well deserved, in our opinion) outcry from Sikhs and other critics over misappropriating an article of clothing that has religious significance and whose wearers have been attacked, discriminated against and even killed. The turban is not just an accessory to monetize; it's a religious article of faith that millions of Sikhs view as sacred. Many find this cultural appropriation inappropriate, since those wearing the turban just for fashion will not appreciate its deep religious significance. pic.twitter.com/fldmxa3Wvr — Sikh Coalition (@sikh_coalition) May 14, 2019 On Tuesday, the Sikh Coalition tweeted an image of the Nordstrom listing and criticized the treatment of the “sacred” headwear. “The turban is not just an accessory to monetize,” the group wrote, adding in a separate tweet that it had contacted Nordstrom and Gucci. It wrote: “Many find this cultural appropriation inappropriate, since those wearing the turban just for fashion will not appreciate its deep religious significance.” There’s much more to unpack with this particular item of clothing. Hit the flip for more tweets that explain why this was such a huge offense.
