Proposed Law to Reform Use of Chemical Dispersants on Oil Spills

As of right now, oil companies engaged in cleanup operations after a spill (one particular one comes to mind) are not required to disclose which chemicals comprise the products they are using to contain or break up the oil. Therefore, BP isn’t required to reveal which chemicals make up the toxic dispersants it’s spraying in droves in the Gulf. It’s alarming that these standards don’t already exist to say the least, but at least one senator plans on doing something about it: Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) announced he plans to introduce the Safe Dispe… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Cool-er e-Reader Goes Out of Business, A Sign for the Digital Books Market?

Image of Cool-er e-Reader via Cooler Cool-er e-readers was a promising competitor against the Kindle last year when it announced it was cheaper and had more titles than the e-reader darling from Amazon. However, a year later, the company has gone under, showing that the booming market for e-reader devices is finally starting to balance out with some clear winners and losers. It also shows that e-readers aren’t as much of a sure thing in the electronics market as once thought. … Read the full story on TreeHugger

Debi Nova Explains ‘Coming To America’ Moment On ‘When I Was 17’

Costa Rica native was overwhelmed by the sheer number of toilet-paper varieties. By MTV News staff Debi Nova Photo: MTV News Since “When I Was 17” premiered in May, we’ve heard celebrity stories of teenage heartbreak and hilarity, triumph and defeat, and OK, a whole lot of foolishness. Drake shared memories of his days rocking what he called a “terrible afro,” Queen Latifah recalled the day she landed her first record deal, and Bret Michaels shared intimate details about the night he lost his virginity. This Saturday’s episode brings us a tale of hope for the future — and a bit of terror at the present. When “Drummer Boy” singer Debi Nova was 17, she emigrated from Costa Rica to Los Angeles. What she found in La La Land was enormously enticing and more than a little overwhelming. “There was a very specific story that marked my coming-to-America moment,” she explains. The event took place almost as soon as her plane had touched down in California and she set out to get some household supplies. “Very first week I get here, I go into the supermarket because I need some toilet paper,” she said. “I go in the toilet-paper aisle and I’m like, ‘OK, unscented, aloe vera, recycled, non-recycled, double-ply, triple-ply, four rolls, eight rolls, 12 rolls, 32 rolls. What do you want?’ ” Tune into Saturday’s show to hear more about Nova’s first year in America, including the embarrassing time she failed her driver’s license test. New York Yankees ace CC Sabathia , who already stood 6-foot-6 before he’d even hit his 18th birthday, and Ciara, who found out what it was like to be cheated on at the tender age of 17, are also featured in the new episode. “When I Was 17” — this week featuring Debi Nova, CC Sabathia and Ciara — airs Saturday at 11 a.m. on MTV. Killing Millions of Gassy Animals Could Really Cut Carbon, Study Says

Photo via chuck12600 If you hate carbon emissions, the Australian Outback may seem like a paradise, unless you’re a bit gassy, that is. According to a new study, the vast, sparsely populated Outback stores an incredible amount of carbon within its forests and grasslands, a whopping 9.7 billion tons of the stuff, in fact. As impressive as that is, researchers say the region could hold much, much more if certain measures were to be implemented, but there’s a catch — one calls for the culling… Read the full story on TreeHugger

And the Senate Climate Bill Gets Weaker Still . . .

As expected, the Kerry-Lieberman climate bill has grown weaker still, relinquishing an economy-wide cap on carbon emissions and instead targeting only the utility sector for greenhouse gas reductions starting in 2013. And that’s still apparently too controversial for this Senate, as the conventional wisdom says not even a utility-only bill can get enough votes to pass. So here’s what evidently remains of the mess that’s left on the table in terms of clean energy and climate legislation this year: … Read the full story on TreeHugger

Belgian Undertakers Want to Dissolve & Flush Dead Into Sewers

Photo: Corbis A group of undertakers in Belgium are proposing a more ecological (but perhaps creepier) alternative to cremation: they hope to dissolve corpses in a caustic solution and flush the resulting liquid and ashes down the drain, which will be recycled at water treatment plants. They contend that the process – known as chemical hydrolysis or resomation – would use less energy than a crematorium and emit no carbon emissions. … Read the full story on TreeHugger

Stephen Colbert to Mel Gibson, The View, The-Dream, BP and Others: You’re On Notice!

Okay, so Stephen Colbert had nothing to do with this. But this is what the Comedy Central host’s trademark On Notice board would look like if THG got hold of it. While Daniel Tosh may have passed him in the ratings, Colbert remains the man. Surely not a man you want to cross if you’re an environmental disaster, anyway. In honor of Stephen, and as a new means of calling out some things in the celebrity and real worlds that really deserve it, we’re putting the following On Notice! The oil spill. Way to ruin the Gulf of Mexico, BP. The View. This program is known for its outspoken panel’s controversial stances … but their ignorant HIV comments were straight out of the early 1980s. Mel Gibson. The fact that we had a hard time deciding which insane, racist, sexist Mel Gibson tirade to link to in this article tells you all you need to know. OK! Magazine. At least make up new lies. Yeesh. LeBron James’ “team.” No, not the Heat. The marketing gurus who convinced him to stick it to Cleveland on national TV. Way to “build a brand,” guys! The-Dream. Stop lying. We know you were creepin’. East Coast weather. Al Gore must be cackling right now. If we wanted to live in a furnace, we’d move to Arizona. At least everything there has AC. Frank from The Bachelorette. We’re not gonna give away any Bachelorette spoilers here … but it’s in the previews. How can you pull that crap, man?
