Training to Swim the English Channel: Really, Really Cold Water

Photo via Earthwatch Tempting fate is never a good idea. I was so busy gloating about how many lengths I could do that I didn’t see it coming. As Oxford’s finest were leaping off the Magdalene Bridge in a tradition that dates back to the dawn of alcopops, I was preparing to take a road trip. Though, not by road you see, because that wouldn’t be very eco. I took a train to the coast to dive into the depths of Dover harbour . And despair. Swimming in the sea is nothing like swimming in a pool. I know that because I’ve read it several times since undertaking this challenge. And because I have swum in th… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Jay-Z Says He Plans To Age Gracefully In The Rap Game

At the ripe age of 40, Hov tells Rolling Stone he enjoys the challenge of competing with younger artists. By Jayson Rodriguez Jay-Z on the cover of “Rolling Stone” Photo: Wenner Media Is Jay-Z taking a page out of Diddy’s playbook? The Bad Boy Records mogul has long told fans and detractors alike that he wouldn’t stop. Now, is seems like the legendary Brooklyn wordsmith is also keen on keeping his run going as long as he can. After threatening to retire several times, Jay recently told Rolling Stone that he’s bent on aging gracefully as a rapper while still maintaining his spot on top of the rankings. The problem other rappers have had as they get older, Jay told the magazine, is that they haven’t adjusted to younger audiences in a believable way. “One of the reasons I wanted to make Blueprint 3 was because of the challenge,” Jay told the magazine in a cover story out this week. “We’ve seen people like LL [Cool J] have longevity, and we respect the heritage of what he’s done, but it’s not like, right now, he’s competing on the same level as Lil Wayne. So for me to still be able to compete at that level at my age, that’s rarefied air. It’s never been done. I think the problem with people, as they start to mature, they say, ‘Rap is a young man’s game,’ and they keep trying to make young songs. But you don’t know the slang — it changes every day. You can visit the topic, but these young kids live it every day, and you’re just visiting. So you’re trying to be something you’re not, and the audience doesn’t buy into that. And people wonder why. ‘I made a great Southern bounce song!’ You’re from New York, and you’re 70! Why are you bouncing?” After scoring 11 #1 albums, the rapper admitted that he’s only told about 10 stories in his career. He’s been retelling the same narratives with varying details and elements. But on his next project, Jay-Z told MTV News last year, he plans to experiment more and revealed the collection may veer off so much it won’t debut at the top of the charts. In the interview, Hov also talked about how he and Beyonc

‘Iron Man 2’ Director Jon Favreau Says Film Is Better Than Original

‘I do prefer this one,’ he says of the sequel. By Larry Carroll, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Jon Favreau Photo: MTV News In the minds of some, Jon Favreau’s “Iron Man” is the greatest superhero movie ever made. It might be surprising to learn, then, that the director considers this week’s “Iron Man 2” to be the better film. “I do prefer this one,” he revealed when we interviewed him recently. With a smile, he admitted, “But I think it’s because I just worked on this one. “That’s the nature of being a filmmaker,” he explained. “They’re each your baby. I’m the worst [to answer questions like this]. “Ask somebody if they have a smart kid,” he said, comparing the experience. ” ‘You have a nice kid, a cute kid, but is he smart?’ Well, I’m not really objective, but I have to say yes. So it’s that type of thing.” The sequel amps up the story line by focusing on Tony Stark’s life after he has revealed himself to be Iron Man, and beefs up the cast substantially with newly added franchise stars Mickey Rourke, Don Cheadle and Scarlett Johansson. “I really feel like with this one, I’m really proud of what we have been able to do,” Favreau reasoned. “I like the challenge of how we addressed having a successful first film. The way we added new characters and new castmembers. I like the way that even though we have a lot of characters, the story lines slowly weave into each other so by the end of the film, you have two story lines and then you have one big story line and it all ends that way.” Favreau also admitted that he’s particularly proud of how he was able to juggle all that while simultaneously honoring Marvel’s unprecedented request of the filmmaker to help set up several other films that will be made by other directors and writers. “I like the way it sets up what can happen later with ‘Avengers’ and ‘Thor’ and all that stuff,” he added. “I think it balanced out all that needed to happen, and there’s a sense of fun. It’s fun and exciting.” As for the effects and action in “Iron Man 2,” Favreau said it also tops the original. “The film is much more ambitious in the form of sound and visual effects,” he explained. “I have to say I’m very happy now that everything’s done. I want to leave it alone. I think it’s the best version of the film we could have had.” Will you be seeing “Iron Man 2” on opening day? Let us know in the comments below! ‘Geek a Week’ Cartoonist Len Peralta Collects the World’s Greatest Geeks – An Urlesque Interview

Filed under: Art / Design , Exclusives When Len Peralta , a talented illustrator who has worked with web celebrities like Jonathan Coulton and Paul and Storm, was looking for a new artistic challenge, he asked a friend for advice. “Why don’t you do a Geek a Week ?” his friend asked. What’s a Geek a Week, though? Len decided that it’s a series of trading cards (and corresponding interviews) of notable geeks. He started the project on March 1st and it will eventually feature a year’s worth of weekly geeks. The art is all original work by Len and the stats and bios on the back are by Paul and Storm. The series already includes JoCo, nerd rapper MC Frontalot, Jay and Silent Bob director Kevin Smith and more. I chatted with Len about how the project is going and how he got to know some of the coolest geeks in the world. We started with the big question: how did Len go about getting all these notable geeks on board with his project? Everything comes back to Coulton. I drew visual responses to Coulton’s “Thing A Week” music project (where Coulton recorded a new piece of music for 52 weeks straight). During that process, I was introduced to Paul and Storm and they hired me to develop the art for their CD News to Us . Since then, we have become very good friends. One of the reasons I thought I had a fighting chance is because I had a pretty good base from which to start. I knew Coulton and Veronica Belmont and the MST3K guys, but after that I was sort of relying on my contacts to help create the ripple effect. Okay, that makes sense, but 52 people?! That’s a boatload of geeks! I had to ask Len how many he’s already lined up. Ha! I just did an assessment a few days ago. As it stands, I’m about midway through. I’ve got about 26 or so confirmed and I’m trying to keep slots open for some really big names. There are a lot of geeks to choose from and I expect there will be omissions, but that’s the beauty of it. How can I collect those elusive George Lucases or Steve Jobses? Steve’s been answering his email lately, so I told Len I thought he might have a shot at getting Apple’s head geek involved. I wrote to Steve. No answer yet. Maybe I’m in the “to do” pile. However, Len told me who we can expect to see in upcoming trading cards and podcasts in the meantime. People who you can expect to see coming up in the deck are Wil Wheaton, Grant Imahara (Great freaking interview with him. He actually said it was the Geekiest conversation he’s had in quite some time.) I’m also trying to grab geeks from all walks of geekdom, so you can expect some D&D geeks, some science geeks and hopefully more videogaming and music geeks. The people involved in this project are all fantastic, but the challenge itself is interesting too. Does Len have to do both the card and the interview before he can consider a week completed? Yes, in my crazy rules for this I had to interview them, which was my way of “collecting” them. The card is sort of the proof of that. It has to be more than just “yes, draw me!” That’s too easy. There has to be some meat to the challenge. Anyone can draw the people I’m drawing, but connecting with them is a totally different thing. So, Steve Jobs and George Lucas, if you’re reading this: connect with Len and get behind this awesome project. I want to see you on Geek a Week! And everyone else, head on over and give Geek a Week and Len Peralta’s other work a look. Share link:// Geek a Week link:// Len Peralta Continue reading

Dancing with the Stars Recap: Perfection For Evan Lysacek, No Pants For Erin Andrews

Talk about coming back with a vengeance. He’s been one of the two dancers to beat along with Nicole Scherzinger this season, but Evan Lysacek nearly found himself eliminated last week . That was then, this is now. The Olympic gold medalist skated his way to a rare 30 with a saucy Argentine tango. Power. Control. Heat. Perfection . You don’t see Len dole out many 10s, so this was no small feat. Nicole and Erin Andrews both put up strong 27s, but this was Evan’s evening. Just the same, there much breathing room between worst and first by the end of the night, thanks to the newly-introduced Cha-Cha Challenge. Evan Lysacek’s individual routine was perfect, but he couldn’t carry the team . Evan, Erin and Niecy Nash (Team Madonna) took on Nicole, Chad and Pam (Team Lady Gaga ) … and got whomped. A 27-24 victory may not seem too demonstrative, but it helped the latter trio pull closer in the compounded standings. Other highlights: Maksim Chmerkovskiy’s pants-off dance-off style intro (even Len had to give it props), Chad Ochocinco’s passionate waltz, and Carrie Ann telling Nicole “you are by far the best dancer we’ve ever had on this show.” Wow. Last night’s full scoreboard and lots of pics after the jump … Evan Lysacek & Anna Trebunskaya – Individual: 30. Team Challenge: 24. Total: 54 . Nicole Scherzinger & Derek Hough – Individual: 27. Team Challenge: 27. Total: 54 . Chad Ochocinco & Cheryl Burke – Individual: 25. Team Challenge: 27. Total: 52 . Erin Andrews & Maksim Chmerkovskiy – Individual: 27. Team Challenge: 24. Total: 51 . Pamela Anderson & Damian Whitewood – Individual: 24. Team Challenge: 27. Total: 51 . Niecy Nash & Louis Van Amstel – Individual: 25. Team Challenge: 24. Total: 49 . Who’s going home tonight? It’s not looking good for Niecy, although Pamela could fall out of favor with the voters again as well. Erin and Chad look safe. Who do you think should be sent packing? Who were your favorite dancers last night? Tell us, then click to enlarge some more photos from Monday … Who are you pulling for on Dancing with the Stars?

If He Keeps Making Them, Sam Will Keep Starring In Them

Avatar actor Sam Worthington says he is ready for as many sequels as director James Cameron decides on. Worthington, 33, played the lead role of Jake Sully in the movie, which was released last year, and says he is definitely up for a sequel. He told Hollyscoop: “When the boss decides that he is up for the challenge, when he writes it and tells me to jump, I’ll jump.” Worthington added that he hopes his character, who turned into a member of the Na’vi at the end of the first film, changes in the movie sequel.
