Dying Mom Inspires Micheel’s Game, Life

Filed under: PGA , US Open PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. — Shaun Micheel swallowed hard, rubbed his eyes and, working hard to keep a steady voice, continued with the story. The 41-year old PGA Tour journeyman, whose only career victory came in the 2003 PGA Championship, had just completed a 2-under par 69 Thursday at Pebble Beach Golf Links to claim a share of the first-round lead in the U.S. Open. He had finished with three birdies over the final five holes, including the 18th. He is tied with England’s Paul Casey and Zimbabwe native Brendon de Jonge. It had been a great a day — if you think golf is really important. “Every time I’m in a tough situation, I think of my mom,” Micheel said. “I love my mother. What do you say? She’s hanging in there.” A year ago Donna Micheel, 63, was diagnosed with lung cancer. Now, the disease has spread to her brain, liver and spine. “It’s hard to watch,” Shaun said.

Sadly, African Teams Still Far Short on Talent to Contend in World Cup

Filed under: FIFA World Cup , International , Nigeria PRETORIA, South Africa — A few nights before this historic World Cup kicked off, the master of ceremonies at a gala in the Johannesburg suburb of Midrand honoring the legends of African soccer reminded attendees of how ignominious was Africa’s arrival in the World Cup in 1974. Mwepu Ilunga, a defender for Zaire, which that year became black Africa’s first World Cup entry, ran out of a defensive wall at the sound of the referee’s whistle and booted away the ball that had been placed for a Brazil free-kick. A video of the incident played on a video screen in the banquet hall and the MC announced Ilunga was in the room and would come to the stage and for the first time explain what all the years since stayed unexplained. “Ilunga?” the MC called several times. “Ilunga?” Ilunga was a no show, or early departee, which was the one thing the room full of African soccer stars from yesteryear, and those who came to see them that night, hoped would not be true of African teams with the first arrival of the World Cup on their continent. It will, unfortunately, be a struggle.

World Cup 2010: Spain points finger of blame at Sara Carbonero

• Iker Casillas’ partner accused of distracting goalkeeper • Journalist had filmed behind goal prior to kick-off Some have pointed to their lack of cutting edge. Some have pointed to their opponents’ rugged determination. But many in Spain have blamed their defeat to Switzerland in their opening World Cup game on Sara Carbonero, the partner of the Spain captain Iker Casillas. Casillas was at least partly at fault for Gelson Fernandes’s goal that gave Switzerland their 1-0 win and fingers have already been pointed at Carbonero, a journalist at a Spanish TV station, who prior to the game was filming footage to camera behind Casillas’s goal. Many fans have been angered by her presence in South Africa, fearing it could prove a distraction for the goalkeeper and prove a destabilising influence within the squad. Carbonero was asked by her own TV station, Telecinco, about her influence. “Can I destabilise the team?” she said. “I think it is nonsense.” Carbonero then gave Casillas a difficult time in a post-match interview , opening her questions with: “How did you manage to muck that up?” “I don’t know what to say,” Casillas responded. “I don’t know if this defeat will have consequences. The dressing room is fed up.” Spain World Cup 2010 Group H World Cup 2010 John Ashdown guardian.co.uk
