Channing Tatum Denies He Stole ‘Magic Mike’ Stripper Moves

‘We created everything from a fictional place,’ Tatum says, responding to allegations by former stripper co-workers. By Jocelyn Vena Channing Tatum in “Magic Mike” Photo: Channing Tatum is reacting to a group of male dancers who allege that the actor quite literally stole their moves for his new movie, “Magic Mike,” which takes place in the shirtless world of male strippers. Two male dancers, Thomas “Awesome” Austin and London Steele, who danced with Tatum while he was a stripper in Florida, told TMZ last week that the experiences in the film, and even Tatum’s character’s name (Magic Mike), are all their own. Austin told the website, “He only danced for four months. How many events could have happened to him?” He added that even Tatum’s move in the film, the Hot Seat, is all his own. Director Steven Soderbergh has said that the film is loosely based on Tatum’s experiences as a male dancer. And in a new interview, Tatum is opening up about the claims against him. “Those guys have been trying to make money off of me since I got into this business,” Tatum told reporters, according to The Hollywood Reporter. “Look, there’s nothing that’s factual in this whole movie other than that I was an 18-year-old kid and went into this world and I dropped out of college from playing football and was living on my sister’s couch. There’s not one character that I took from my real life; this is just a world that I went into, and I had a perspective on. And we created everything from a fictional place.” “Magic Mike” opens Friday, and Tatum is going into opening week with no ill will for his former co-workers. “I don’t want to say anything bad about them because they’re part of the reason why I think this world is so interesting,” he said. “They’re very interesting, intriguing and bizarre characters, and I’m thankful for weird people out there. They’re some of the most creative people.” The June 29 film release also stars “True Blood” actor Joe Manganiello, “White Collar” star Matt Bomer and Matthew McConaughey. In an interview with MTV News, Tatum recalled how the film came out of a conversation he had with Soderbergh. “I was having a beer with Soderbergh — we were doing a movie together — and I told him about [my past stripping],” he said. “I’d been doing it for eight months of my life when I was, like, 18 or 19, and he said, ‘We gotta make a movie out of that.’ And I was like, ‘Why? Why do we need to do that?’ And he said, ‘I’ve never seen that world on film before.’ And then we really started talking about that, and we thought it would be really hilarious but still grounded in reality.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Magic Mike.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Usher Earned Channing Tatum His Best Stripper Money

‘I did ‘You Make Me Wanna’ when I was dancing,’ the ‘Magic Mike’ star admits to MTV News. By Kara Warner, with additional reporting by Josh Horowitz Channing Tatum Photo: MTV News If you’re a Channing Tatum fan or have been following the very entertaining news surrounding his upcoming movie “Magic Mike,” you know that before his days as a Hollywood heartthrob, the “21 Jump Street” star was a stripper in Florida. When MTV News caught up with Tatum during our special pre- Movie Awards treat, our “Sneak Peak Week event with “Magic Mike,” we enlisted Tatum’s co-star and “True Blood” hunk Joe Manganiello to ask Tatum a question about his scantily clad days in Florida. “Back in your Tampa stripping days, what was your most money-making routine, and can you take the crowd through a little walk-through of it?” Manganiello asked via a pre-taped video interview. “Yeah, what made you the most money?” Matthew McConaughey chimed in. “I know it wasn’t the backflip.” “It was Usher,” Tatum admitted, albeit bashfully. “I did ‘You Make Me Wanna’ when I was dancing.” The actor finished his answer not by demonstrating a portion of that particular money-making routine, but by dashing into the crowd to hug a few lucky screaming female fans. And although there has been much ado over Tatum’s stripper past, particularly with “Magic Mike” being loosely based on his experiences, the “Haywire” star said he will not be talking about or doing any stripping anymore after the film opens. “This will be my swan song, I will never do or talk anything about stripping after this ever, ever again,” Tatum promised , adding that he still can’t believe “Magic Mike” made it to the big screen. “It was just crazy, the whole time we were going through it, we just started laughing,” Tatum said of the movie, which hits theaters June 29. “What I think people don’t realize we financed this ourselves, we wrote and produced it all ourselves, it’s not a studio movie. I’m interested to see what people’s reactions are, it’s a fun movie, the first half and a serious movie the second.” So will Tatum be breaking out his go-to stripper move in the flick? “There is always a go-to stripper move,” he said. “But that’s for the wifey.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Magic Mike.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . MTV Movie Awards Best Fight Category Pits Potter Against Katniss

We size up the Best Fight contenders, from Tom Cruise to Jonah Hill. Cast your vote now! By Kevin P. Sullivan Daniel Radcliffe and Ralph Fiennes in “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2” Photo: Warner Bros. With the 21st annual MTV Movie Awards just under a week away, it’s time to get you as prepared as possible for the biggest night in movies. That’s why we’re kicking off Movie Awards Week here at MTV News with exclusives, interviews with A-listers and deep dives into the awards, leading right up to the big night on Sunday at 9 p.m. ET. For our first look at the categories, we’re dissecting Best Fight blow by blow. Sure, an action-packed fight sequence will always grab our attention, but the ones that really stay with us are the ones that are bigger, badder and funnier than anything else we saw this year. But which one takes home the golden popcorn is up to you to decide, so head over to MovieAwards.MTV.com to cast your vote. Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill vs. Kid Gang – “21 Jump Street” There are two distinctly different fighting styles on display in this brawl from “21 Jump Street.” First, you have the typical Channing Tatum route with well-executed blows and multiple opponents going down. Then you have Jonah Hill’s style, the way we would all fight. You run away a little bit, and when things get really, really scary, you do your best to convince your foe that “the fight’s over.” As you can see in the clip, one works better than the other. Daniel Radcliffe vs. Ralph Fiennes – “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2” The Luke Skywalker versus Darth Vader of our time, after eight movies, Harry Potter finally faced off against the dark wizard who left him an orphan in the series’ most epic fight sequence. The millions who had read the final book before seeing the film knew that everything would turn out OK for HP, but you couldn’t help but hold your breath as Harry and Voldemort dueled one last time. Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson vs. Alexander Ludwig – “The Hunger Games” And then there were three. Thanks to a last-minute rule change, the star-crossed (maybe) lovers Katniss and Peeta had an opportunity to both make it out of the arena alive. The only one in their way was the violent, but not completely evil Cato. For most of the tournament, Katniss was able to best her foes through cleverness or luck, but for his last fight, it would have to be up-close and personal. Tom Cruise vs. Michael Nyqvist – “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol” If you look at Cruise and then you size up Nyqvist, the fight seems a little one-sided. Ethan Hunt is a world-class secret agent, and Kurt Hendricks is a kind-of chubby nuclear strategist. Something’s got to give. What you don’t count on is just how crazy Hendricks is, but we all learned the hard way when he takes a swan dive off the top level of a car park to ensure his victory. That’s hard-core. Tom Hardy vs. Joel Edgerton – “Warrior” When two estranged brothers enter a mixed martial arts competition to determine the best in the world, they will inevitably end up fighting in the final round. We knew that much going into “Warrior.” What we didn’t know was that Joel Edgerton and Tom Hardy would not pull any punches, so to speak, and deliver one of the most brutal and heart-wrenching bouts of 2011. Head over to MovieAwards.MTV.com to vote for your favorite flicks now! The 21st annual MTV Movie Awards air live Sunday, June 3, at 9 p.m. ET. Josh Hutcherson Wins Best Male Performance Movie Award

‘Hunger Games’ star beats out Daniel Radcliffe, Channing Tatum, Ryan Gosling and Joseph Gordon-Levitt for the coveted Golden Popcorn. By Ryan J. Downey Josh Hutcherson wins at the 2012 MTV Movie Awards Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images UNIVERSAL CITY, California — “The Hunger Games” stormed the box office to the tune of nearly $400 million, and at Sunday’s MTV Movie Awards , the man fans know and love as Peeta Mellark clutched a different type of riches in his hand: a Golden Popcorn. Thanks to the massive number of fans who voted for him, Josh Hutcherson took home the award for Best Male Performance at the 21st annual awards show. “Oh, my god. I’ve wanted to hold a Golden Popcorn since I was like 4 years old. This is incredible,” he said from the stage, as he accepted the award from Emma Watson, Logan Lerman and Ezra Miller. “It’s insane too, because every single one of those actors I admire and I want to be, so to even be up here is blowing my mind right now.” Hutcherson thanked “Hunger Games” author Suzanne Collins, director Gary Oldman, his producers like Nina Jacobson and Jon Kilik, Lionsgate and, of course, the fans. “You guys are the best fans in the world,” he gushed. “You’re crazy and passionate and you make our job amazing.” The 19-year-old Kentucky-born actor joined an esteemed list of A-listers, guy’s guys and heartthrobs who have taken home the esteemed award, including Arnold Schwarzenegger, Denzel Washington, Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise and Leonardo DiCaprio. The former child star beat out a formidable array of challengers who all more than earned their places in the category: , Channing Tatum , Ryan Gosling and Joseph Gordon-Levitt . Radcliffe was nominated for his final performance as the world’s most beloved boy wizard in “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2.” Tatum cruised into the category for his role opposite Rachel McAdams in the tear-jerking romantic drama “The Vow,” which also earned him a nomination for Best Kiss. Gosling, who won the Best Kiss category once upon a time (with McAdams) thanks to “The Notebook,” was nominated for the darkly pensive and critically acclaimed drama “Drive.” Gordon-Levitt, who we’ll be seeing again in “The Dark Knight Rises” this summer, gave a nuanced performance in “50/50.” Anticipation for the next entry in the “Hunger Games” series, “Catching Fire,” is already running high. Earlier in the week, “John Carter” star Taylor Kitsch shot down rumors that he’d play dreamy District 4 tribute Finnick Odair, something Robert Pattinson debunked himself, as well. Pusha T’s Making ‘Superhero’ Music, The-Dream Teases

‘We just need him to be this guy for us right now, because I need that music in my car,’ Dream tells MTV News of Push’s album. By Nadeska Alexis with reporting by Rahman Dukes The-Dream and Pusha T Photo: MTV News Pusha T is still surprised that his opportunity to drop a solo album came around so quickly. But since he has the chance, the Clipse rapper and G.O.O.D. Music signee has immersed himself in a new learning experience with Kanye West and The-Dream, one he’s confident will result in a classic LP. Between the mad genius that is Kanye and the R&B storyteller that is The-Dream, Pusha might’ve just hit the production jackpot. “I’ve learned so much about song structure from Dream and I’ve learned so much from ‘Ye about finding the most colorful parts of your rhymes, editing it down and making sure, like, all the best parts of the rhyme are right in your face,” he told MTV News during a studio session with Mr. Terius Nash in Atlanta. “I’ve just totally taken this [attitude of] sitting back and absorbing everything they say.” After just a few sessions with Dream, Pusha said he has learned to accept the creative criticism as a tool to push further. “Sometimes [a track is] wrong. Sometimes it’s over-rapped and [The-Dream] will tell you, ‘Nah, stay right here. Stay within these lines, in these perimeters right here.’ This sh– is school, man; it’s real live school to me.” What might be school for Pusha, however, is just another spiritual experience for The-Dream, who’s infamous for crafting engrossing narrative across his projects. “It’s [being] spiritual about it and I think it’s just a timing thing,” The-Dream explained of how he builds the perfect songs. “It has a lot to do with what we want to hear, so it wasn’t [like I wouldn’t] allow Pusha to get off on rapping. We just need [him] to be this guy for us right now, because I need that music in my car. I’m R&B, but I grew up on Bankhead and I was riding around with UGK in my car, so I know what that real sh– is. I know how it makes you feel like a superhero.” “I want to feel like I’m literally beating my chest out the car,” he added. “You look over in my car — I’m mean-mugging you, you mean-mugging me, and I got Pusha in my deck. That’s how I want to feel. And so I was just providing that feeling, I just wanted to capture it in each song. We need [him] to say this because [he’s] talented enough to do it.” Thus far, we know that a few titles on the album will tentatively include “40 Acres” and “Automatic.” But Pusha, who recently dropped the fiery “Exodus 23:1,” is sure that the entire project will be cohesive and, of course, classic. “At the end of the day, we’re trying to make classic material,” he said. “Everybody who’s here is tuned into this project — period. It’s about being cohesive, and cohesive musicality is just not happening right now.” Since Pusha and The-Dream are hitting it off so well on this album, we asked if we might expect any future collaborations? “Man, I called him about the next album, already,” Pusha said without hesitation. And to that, The-Dream said with a laugh, “We will grow old together.” Are you excited for Pusha’s solo album? Tell us in the comments! Related Artists Pusha T The-Dream

Channing Tatum And Matthew McConaughey: Can You Tell Their Abs Apart?

‘Magic Mike’ stars debut exclusive clip, talk about getting ‘butt naked’ during MTV Movie Awards Sneak Peek Week. By Amy Wilkinson, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Channing Tatum in “Magic Mike” Photo: Warner Bros. UNIVERSAL CITY, California — Moviegoers are seeing a lot of Channing Tatum in 2012, thanks to a trio of starring film roles, but they’ll see a whole new side of the actor when his upcoming stripper flick ” Magic Mike ” debuts June 29. And, yes, we are talking about his backside. Tatum, along with co-star Matthew McConaughey and producer-screenwriter Reid Carolin, took to the Universal Studios CityWalk stage Thursday night to debut an exclusive clip from the Steven Soderbergh-directed film and talk about taking it all off during our Sneak Peek Week festivities leading up to the MTV Movie Awards this Sunday, June 3. Both actors are clearly comfortable taking their shirts off. In fact, MTV News’ Josh Horowitz administered a shirtless guessing game to the pair — which they both aced, by the way (watch in the embedded video). Therefore, taking the next logical step and shimmying in a thong wasn’t too difficult, both agreed, though it did require ample preparation. “I think pre-movie is pretty intense because to get butt naked, you have to — there’s a different regimen for getting butt naked, but thank god, it was a short shoot,” Tatum said with a sly grin. “Then we just had fun on the day.” One could hardly blame Tatum or any of his fellow stripping stars for having reservations once the cameras began rolling, but the actor assured us that the entire cast, including Alex Pettyfer, Joe Manganiello and Matt Bomer, were total pros. “These guys have never stripped before, and I remember the first day of rehearsals,” Tatum recalled, “I looked at all the guys, and we went through our stuff, and I was like, ‘All right. It’s time to get naked, boys.’ And it was hilarious that none of them really balked.” Head over to MovieAwards.MTV.com to vote for your favorite flicks now! Harry Potter And Katniss Need A Movie Awards Hero

Captain America, Thor and Channing Tatum’s Jenko battle it out on Twitter to win Best Hero on Sunday. By Ryan J. Downey Daniel Radcliffe in “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2” Photo: Warner Bros. Harry Potter spent several movies (and books, of course) battling Voldemort, both indirectly and in face-to-face confrontations. Katniss Everdeen’s skill with a bow and arrow has kept her alive against considerable odds. Captain America has fought bad guys (like his arch-nemesis the Red Skull) in various incarnations since World War II, whether with the Invaders, the Howling Commandos or the Avengers. His teammate, Thor, has gone up against all manner of sinister foes across all the nine realms, not the least of which being his half-brother, the mischievous Loki. Jenko, from the big-screen version of “21 Jump Street,” not only had to contend with drug dealers, but there was the whole “politics of high school” drama too. But right now, all these heroes are facing their most fervent, vocal, communicative, evolving and passionate adversary yet: Twitter. The MTV Movie Awards first-ever social voting category, Best Hero , has harnessed the power of Twitter like Marvel supervillains harnessing the power of the Cosmic Cube to determine which of the big screen do-gooders (many of them ripped from the written page) is truly the people’s champion. It’s been up-to-the-minute action worthy of some of their biggest adventures, with the instantaneous might of the microblogging medium allowing each of them to rise and fall in the ranks constantly as fans tweet their favorites with special hashtags. Harry Potter and “Hunger Games” hero Katniss have been in the closest competition for the top spot, each with well over 100,000 votes as of this writing. Katniss, of course, is just starting her movie franchise stardom even as the onetime boy wizard has grown up and moved on after last year’s final “Potter” installment. “The Avengers” mopped the floor with the blockbuster “Hunger Games,” usurping the novel-based movie’s throne to become the #1 movie of 2012 thus far (and rising through the top five in the all-time list as well). However, the Best Hero category may have split the Avengers fan vote by pitting two of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes against each other. Captain America has been a distant third with his pal Thor even further behind at #4. Jenko from “21 Jump Street,” the smash comedic take on the ’80s TV show of the same name about a group of cops who go undercover in high school, has his work cut out for him. He’s trailing behind all the other heroes, but in fairness, he doesn’t have the same historical power of his foes. Channing Tatum also had to walk in the shadow of Johnny Depp (who — spoiler — reprised his TV role in a brief cameo) in “Jump Street,” though it won favor with critics (85 percent on the Tomatometer!) and fans ($136 million at the box office! For an action comedy! In March!) alike. Channing Tatum, of course, is also nominated in the Best Kiss category thanks to his steamy lip-lock with Rachel McAdams in “The Vow.” But when we sat down with him on Thursday, he told us he’s confident that a certain franchise has that category in the bag. “It doesn’t matter. The ‘Twilight’ kids always sweep it,” he told MTV News when he sat down for the “Magic Mike” MTV Sneak Peek Week event . “They sweep it every time.” He was kind enough to personally thank MTV News’ @JoshuaHorowitz and the small but dedicated army of #VoteJenko fans himself from his own Twitter account, @ChanningTatum. Twitter user @lesleycherrypie voted Jenko, “Not only because he’s hot, but that is a big part of it.” @CaraFoshizzle quoted several of her favorite lines from “Captain America: The First Avenger” as she tweeted her vote for Mr. Steve Rogers. @HarryPotterings pleaded, “Please #VOTEPOTTER before the voting closes! It’s one of our last chances to win an award for our childhood.” @CleverGranger said, “Katniss ‘won’ The Hunger Games, but Harry ‘saved’ the wizarding world. Who’s the true hero now?” Quotes from “The Hunger Games” have flooded the Twitter-verse, as well. @MaryamA115 said, “She’s getting closer! 2nd place now. :D” Head over to MovieAwards.MTV.com to vote for your favorite flicks now! Channing Tatum And Rachel McAdams ‘Tough’ To Beat In Battle For Best Kiss

‘Breaking Dawn’ producer calls nominees Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson a shoo-in — except for one sultry couple. By Kara Warner Channing Tatum and Rachel McAdams in “The Vow” Photo: Sony Pictures With just a few more days left to cast your votes for this Sunday’s 2012 MTV Movie Awards , the competition is heating up. And while there are hotly contested races in nearly every category , Best Kiss might be the one to watch this year. The front-runners are Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson , not only because they’re fan favorites but because they’ve taken home the award for three consecutive years. MTV News recently caught up with “Twilight” producer extraordinaire Wyck Godfrey, who assessed the competition and concluded that Stewart and Pattinson are likely to bag their fourth award — save for one heated smooch between Rachel McAdams and Channing Tatum in “The Vow.” “That might be tough, Channing is having quite a year,” Godfrey said diplomatically, before explaining why the kiss in “Breaking Dawn – Part 1″ really is this year’s best. ” The Best Kiss is when it’s really about [a] prelude to sex,” Godfrey admitted with a smile. “Sometimes that takes it up a notch and that could be that what might get us over the hump. “I think the build-up for four [‘Twilight’] movies, and to watch these two finally have sex is such that when that happens in ‘Breaking Dawn,’ the audience is fully with it, wants to see every frame of footage,” the producer explained of that heated moment between Edward and Bella after their “I dos.” “I think that kiss is special because we know what it’s leading to.” Aside from this year’s nominated kiss, Godfrey said the previously nominated smooch between Bella and Jacob (Taylor Lautner) in “Eclipse” ranks among his favorites. “I think the fun one was in ‘Eclipse’ when Taylor and Kristen kiss for the first time in the movies, and I think that was something for fans and [the filmmakers] that was really enjoyable because Rob and Kristen were old hat by then.” Head over to MovieAwards.MTV.com to vote for your favorite flicks now! MTV Movie Awards’ Best Kiss Must Be ‘Powerful,’ Robin Thicke Says

‘You have to build up the tension, because the kiss is the release,’ crooner tells MTV News. By Fallon Prinzivalli Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart in “Breaking Dawn – Part 2” Photo: Summit Entertainment The Best Kiss award at the MTV Movie Awards is arguably the fans’ favorite category to vote on. For the past three years in a row, the honor has been bestowed upon “Twilight” co-stars Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart for their smooches as Edward Cullen and Bella Swan. This year, they’re up against some hefty competition: Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling in “Crazy, Stupid, Love,” Emma Watson and Rupert Grint in “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2,” Rachel McAdams and Channing Tatum in “The Vow” and, their biggest opponents, Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson in “The Hunger Games.” While the winner is anybody’s guess, we’re wondering which couple deserves the award. There’s no one better to answer our question than Robin Thicke, who’s managed to croon his way into the hearts of many ladies. The musician tells MTV News that the Best Kiss award should go to the most “powerful” smooch. “You have to build up the tension, because the kiss is the release,” the “Exhale (Shoop Shoop)” singer said. “The kiss is the moment when the strings come in, and all of the danger and the anger and the frustration and the loss — the kiss becomes redemption. It takes you out of purgatory and into the gates of heaven. A kiss has to be that powerful, in my opinion.” If fans honor Thicke’s definition when they vote, it sounds like Hutcheron and Lawrence could take home the coveted golden popcorn. Their characters, Katniss and Peeta, are in danger while they’re stuck in a cave, she could lose him if he dies from his injuries, and he’s frustrated and angry that she wants to head into the bloodbath of the Cornucopia to save him. With a single kiss, all that tension is released. Sounds like they’re a shoe-in, right? You decide! The power is in your hands.
