‘Eagle’ Star Jamie Bell Talks Channing Tatum, Horseplay

‘It was no contest,’ Bell boasts to MTV News about besting co-star Tatum in horseback riding for the period flick. By Kara Warner Jamie Bell Photo: MTV News Judging by posters and trailers for the upcoming swords-and-sandals flick “The Eagle” alone, it seems that one of the key factors that led stars Channing Tatum and Jamie Bell to sign up for the Roman warrior action adventure was the opportunity to play: from swinging swords to riding horses. However, when MTV News spoke to Bell as he promoted “The Eagle,” the actor revealed that there was actually a lot of work behind all that horseplay (pun intended!). “It was a very kind of challenging approach to a film,” Bell said about learning to ride a horse and speak in a new language for his role as Briton slave Esca before production began. “There was a lot to be done before we even got to set. So, in that regard, all of the prep was actually the hardest thing,” he explained. Bell added that although horseback riding was the most difficult, he grew to love his furry companion. “I was actually really sad to see the horse go, to be honest,” Bell admitted. “I had the fastest horse as well, I want to point that out.” He went on to say that he discovered his steed’s speed on one of the very few occasions that he and Tatum were allowed to gallop with their horses. “At one occasion they were like, ‘All right guys, you can go full pedal to the metal. It’s flat ground. It’s really good for the horses. You’ll be fine; have at it.’ It was no contest,” Bell bragged. “I was just whoooshh! I was gone. Channing’s horse was having a bit of trouble,” he said with a smile. ‘The Roommate’ Tops Weekend Box Office

James Cameron-produced ‘Sanctum’ came in a distant second place. By Aly Semigran Minka Kelly in “The Roommate” Photo: Sony Super Bowl weekend tends to leave an entire demographic on the sidelines: young women. But it seems women found a way to pass the time amidst the gridiron hoopla. They went to the movies. The trend isn’t anything new, as last year, women helped make the weepy “Dear John” the #1 movie at the box office over Super Bowl weekend. Women under the age of 21 had a big part in making the Leighton Meester/ Minka Kelly college chiller “The Roommate” #1 at a quiet weekend box office with $15.6 million. Sony’s stalker thriller (60 percent of whose ticket buyers were female) jumped to an early lead when it brought in $6.4 million on Friday alone . While Kelly and Meester made for a killer combo, it looks like the seemingly unstoppable pairing of James Cameron and dazzling special effects has started to flounder. Universals’ Cameron-produced “Sanctum” found itself in second place with $9.2 million, even with 3-D ticket prices. The trapped-in-a-cave action vehicle received a paltry C+ from CinemaScore. “The Roommate” likely snagged a good portion of the “No Strings Attached” audience, but the Natalie Portman/ Ashton Kutcher rom-com still passed the $50 million mark during its third week in theaters. Coming in at third place, the R-rated feature made $8.4 million, bring its cumulative total to $51.8 million. With just three weeks until the Oscars, audiences are making sure to see Best Picture front-runner “The King’s Speech” before the big night. “Speech,” which only fell 25 percent from last weekend’s box-office figures, narrowly missed third place as it grossed $8.3 million. The film should pass the $100 million mark by the Academy Awards as it continues to expand in theaters. “The King’s Speech” has made $84.1 million thus far in its theatrical run. Rounding out the top five is Seth Rogen’s comic book caper “The Green Hornet,” which earned $6.1 million in its fourth week, bringing its overall total to $87.2 million. The Box-Office Top Five #1 “The Roommate” ($15.6 million) #2 “Sanctum” ($9.2 million) #3 “No Strings Attached” ($8.4 million) #4 “The King’s Speech” ($8.3 million) #5 “The Green Hornet” ($6.1 million) Upcoming Releases A veritable mixed bag of movies hits theaters on Valentine’s Day weekend, including Justin Bieber’s 3-D documentary “Never Say Never,” the Adam Sandler/ Jennifer Aniston comedy “Just Go With It,” Channing Tatum’s historical action vehicle “The Eagle” and the 3-D animated feature “Gnomeo and Juliet.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Roommate” and “Sanctum.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Son of No One Trailer: Tracy Morgan Gets Dramatic in Sundance Closing Night Film

It probably goes without saying that I’ve spent many sleepless nights pondering how well Tracy Morgan could hold his own against Al Pacino and Juliette Binoche in a dramatic role (Who hasn’t?). And now, behold! The trailer for the Sundance closing night film The Son of No One not only hints at that answer, but throws Channing Tatum, Katie Holmes and Ray Liotta into the mix as well! And just look at that title! There’s no comic relief in sight here; just struggles for redemption and revenge in the mean city streets. So how does the usually hilarious Morgan do when confronted with this dark material and these acting heavyweights?

Vince Vaughn, Wife Welcome A Daughter

The couple’s first child, Locklyn Kyla Vaughn, was born on Saturday in Chicago. By Jocelyn Vena Kyla Weber and Vince Vaughn Photo: Jonathan Daniel/ Getty Images Over the weekend, Vince Vaughn and his wife, Kyla Weber, welcomed their first child into the world. The couple had a daughter, Locklyn Kyla Vaughn, on Saturday, People.com reports . Little Locklyn was born in Chicago, the actor’s hometown, weighing in at 7 pounds and measured 20 inches long, Vaughn’s rep tells the website. “Both of them couldn’t be happier to welcome their sweet little girl into their family!” a family friend said of the new bundle of joy. Last year, Vaughn opened up to People.com about fatherhood, saying, “It’s the first time that I really want to have kids. I’ve been very fortunate in my career, and my life has been about that for so long that you get bored of it. You’re ready for your life to be about other people and other things.” Vaughn and Weber , a Canadian real-estate agent, announced they were expecting a baby in July. The couple married in January of this year in Chicago with close friends and family in attendance. Earlier this fall, Vaughn was caught up in a bit of controversy surrounding a gay joke he made in a trailer for the upcoming Ron Howard-directed relationship comedy, “The Dilemma,” which was later removed. “The Dilemma,” about a man (played by Vaughn) who learns that the wife (Winona Ryder) of his best friend (Kevin James) is having an affair with another guy (Channing Tatum), will be released on January 14. There has been no word on whether the joke will be removed from the final cut of the movie. Have any well-wishes to send to Vince and his wife? Share them in the comments.

Kevin James To Star In Mixed Martial Arts Film

‘Paul Blart: Mall Cop’ star will play a physics teacher moonlighting as a mixed martial arts fighter. By Adam Rosenberg Photo: David Livingston/ Getty Mall cop Paul Blart, better known as Kevin James , is trading in his security uniform for boxing trunks. The actor is all set to go another round with Sony — after “Paul Blart: Mall Cop,” “Grown-Ups” and 2011’s “The Zookeeper” — for a mixed martial arts movie. James will star in the as-yet-untitled feature as a physics teacher who decides to moonlight as a mixed martial arts fighter when the school he works for faces budget cuts, Deadline reports. Whatever his initial intentions are, the main character proves talented enough to land a gig as a fighter in the UFC. Sony is reportedly fast-tracking the film to shoot next year, presumably for a 2012 release. James will also produce with Todd Garner (“Blart” and “Knight and Day”), and the script comes from Allan Loeb (“The Switch”). The actor also has a role in another Loeb-scripted comedy, early 2011 release “The Dilemma,” directed by Ron Howard and starring Vince Vaughn, Winona Ryder and Channing Tatum alongside James. “The Zookeeper” opens next summer, starring James as the titular caretaker, an overweight, lonely guy who decides to get out into the world and meet someone. Seeing this, the animals at the zoo he so loves reveal their great secret — they can talk — and, in doing so, teach their friend how to get his groove on. Rosario Dawson stars as the live-action female lead. The film also features the voice talents of Sylvester Stallone, Adam Sandler, Judd Apatow, Cher and others. Loeb has been busy promoting a pair of 2010 releases that he scripted, the Jason Bateman/Jennifer Aniston-starring rom-com “The Switch” (which he also produced) and the soon-to-be-released long-awaited sequel “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps.” In addition to “The Dilemma,” Loeb also worked or is working on the upcoming Sandler/Aniston comedy “Just Go With It,” actioner “Protection” and high-profile reboot/remake “Escape From New York.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Michael Douglas To Undergo Treatment For Throat Tumor

‘I am very optimistic,’ Douglas says in a statement. By Kara Warner Michael Douglas Photo: MTV News Michael Douglas is set to begin chemotherapy after doctors recently discovered a tumor in his throat. People magazine reports that the “Wall Street” actor’s doctors expect Douglas to make a full recovery as soon as he completes eight weeks of treatment, which will reportedly include a combination of radiation and chemotherapy. “I am very optimistic,” Douglas said in a statement to the magazine. No word yet on how the treatment will affect his work schedule, as Douglas has a lot on his plate, including promotion for his return to the character Gordon Gekko in “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps,” which opens at the end of September. Douglas is also set to appear alongside a slew of stars in Steven Soderbergh’s upcoming action thriller “Knockout.” The cast includes Ewan McGregor, Michael Fassbender, Michael Angarano, Channing Tatum, Antonio Banderas and Bill Paxton. When MTV News last caught up with the 65-year-old actor, he appeared happy and healthy at the Film Society of Lincoln Center Honors, where he received the year’s top honor, presented to Hollywood legends. At the time, Douglas was hard-pressed to pick his favorite role from his four-decade-long career in the business. “You work as hard on your failures as on your successes,” he said. “I’d say tonight, particularly because [director] Curtis [Hanson] is here, I liked ‘Wonder Boys’ a lot. ‘Solitary Man’ is right up there. I’m real happy with my batting average. I look at the rest, and it’s pretty good. You pick your spots.” Share your well-wishes for Michael Douglas and his family in the comments.
