Frankie Go Boom Teaser: Sons of Anarchy’s Charlie Hunnam Meets Ron Perlman As a Woman

The marketing noise at Comic-Con is always such a cacophony, it can be tough-to-impossible to get tiny movies noticed in the chaos unless they’ve got attention-grabbing hooks . Like, say, finding a thumb drive inside a condom that just happens to contain the first-look teaser at Ron Perlman as a transsexual named Phyllis greeting his Sons of Anarchy son Charlie Hunnam (both in town for this weekend’s Pacific Rim and SoA panels) and Bridemaids ‘ Chris O’Dowd with a big, fat kiss. Movieline’s got your first look at the indie comedy Frankie Go Boom ! Hunnam stars as Frankie, O’Dowd as his terrible brother Bruce, and Perlman as Bruce’s terrifying old ex-con acquaintance Phil, now a terrifying ex-con lady named Phyllis. Lizzy Caplan earned raves for her turn as Lassie, whose one-night stand with Frankie leads to complications… involving a sex tape… and, well, I’ll let the film’s synopsis do the explaining: 3,2,1 … Frankie go Boom follows Frank Bartlett (Charlie Hunnam) who has been tortured, embarrassed and humiliated by his brother Bruce (Chris O’Dowd) – usually on film – for his entire life. Now that Bruce is finally off drugs and has turned his life around, things should be different. They are not. 3,2,1 … Frankie go Boom is a comedy about two brothers a girl with a broken heart, a sex tape, an angel and a pig. Since Movieline was the first to debut Frankie Go Boom ‘s poster featuring Perlman as “Phyllis,” it’s fitting that we bring you this glimpse of his post-op vamping. Let Perlman’s ” HER , MOTHAF***A!” terrify you into addressing the trans community with cowering respect. (Fun fact: I’m told it was Hunnam who suggested his Sons of Anarchy father figure play the transgender Phyllis.) Frankie Go Boom (now titled 3,2,1… Frankie Go Boom ), written and directed by Jordan Roberts, will debut on VOD on September 10 with a theatrical release to follow October 12. As for you other would-be attention-grabbers here at Comic-Con: Good luck topping the visceral recoil followed by ” Oh thank God ” relief I experienced when I picked up the Frankie Go Boom viral “package” last night and realized what was (or wasn’t) inside… Read more from Comic-Con 2012. Idris Elba Suits Up in First Image from Guillermo Del Toro’s Pacific Rim

Total Film has the first look at Idris Elba in Guillermo del Toro’s alien invasion flick Pacific Rim , for which he built — and destroyed — replica sets, kaiju style. Elba stars alongside Charlie Hunnam , Ron Perlman, Charlie Day and Rinko Kikuchi in the mecha-epic, which pits robot-piloting humans in battle against interplanetary monsters. In the magazine’s latest issue, Del Toro spills about the process of destroying entire city blocks and rigging robot hydraulic rigs on the set: When we’re talking about the physicality of the fight, we ended up building several blocks of Hong Kong. And literally demolished them. We built a building and then we took down the buildings. We built command centres of the robots that were the size of the house. We started them on hydraulic rigs that shoot and elevated them and moved them round so you could really get a sense of the physical nature driving a robot like this. “The thing I love most in the world is monsters, and we are creating great monsters,” del Toro told Movieline last year , when he was just starting on the film. Pacific Rim is set for release on July 13, 2013. [ Total Film via Moviehole ]

Poster Premiere: Ron Perlman Goes Transgender in Frankie Go Boom

While some marketing efforts demand a close read , others allow no margin for misundertanding what they are, where they come from, or what they portend. Take writer-director Jordan Roberts’s comedy Frankie Go Boom , which premieres this weekend at South By Southwest with arguably the best tagline of any festival film in history and the promise of Ron Perlman in full transgender mode. Get your first look at the poster — and a tagline translation — after the jump. Perfect! Now in English: Frank Bartlett has been tortured, embarrassed and humiliated by his brother Bruce — usually on film — his entire life. Now that Bruce is finally off drugs and has turned his life around, things should be different. They are not. And why might that be? Another bit from the synopsis made available to Movieline: While trying to remove a compromising video from the internet, two brothers (Charlie Hunnam and Chris O’Dowd) visit a brilliant computer hacker named Phil (Ron Perlman). But when they get there, they discover that Phil is now Phyllis… …and she has no intention of helping them for “free.” The rest will remain a mystery until Frankie Go Boom unspools for the first time Saturday night in Austin, where Movieline’s own Jen Yamato will be on hand for a look. Stand by for that and plenty more from SXSW. And please form an orderly queue until these one-sheets are available for the home, the office, and beyond. Follow S.T. VanAirsdale on Twitter . Liv Tyler on The Ledge, Battles of the Sexes and Lord of the Rings at 10

Liv Tyler ends an unusually long break from the movies this year, first with the wild dark comedy Super and today with The Ledge , in which she co-stars as the troubled, born-again Christian wife in the middle of a fundamentalist husband (Patrick Wilson) and hunky atheist neighbor (Charlie Hunnam) sandwich. Faith, sex, love, and mortality collide in writer-director Matthew Chapman’s potboiler, which culminates in a suicide showdown also featuring Terrence Howard. It’s madness! But it’s also, as always, a pleasure to see Tyler back onscreen — where she has a confirmed interest to return even more frequently in the months and years ahead.

Cory Monteith on His ‘Idiot’ Glee Character, His Two Left Feet and What’s Ahead For Finn Hudson

Like the character he portrays on Fox’s Emmy-nominated gem Glee , Cory Monteith is a paradox. Both awkward and well-rehearsed, the Canadian-born actor had famously never sung in front of a live audience before his audition for Ryan Murphy’s musical series. He never learned how to throw a football before playing star quarterback Finn Hudson. And despite having zero experience dancing, he landed a role on the only scripted series that demands its stars learn new choreography each week.
