Britney Spears’ ‘Hold It Against Me’ Tops Billboard Digital Songs Chart

Single debuts at #1 and breaks Taylor Swift’s previous sales record. By Jocelyn Vena Britney Spears’ “Hold It Against Me” Photo: Jive Don’t hold it against her, but Britney Spears has a hit on her hands. Her new track, “Hold It Against Me,” which was released last week, topped the Billboard Digital Songs chart . The Dr.Luke/ Max Martin-produced song, the lead single from the singer’s yet-untitled March album, sold 411,000 downloads in its first week available for purchase. The debut also means that Spears broke a record. According to Billboard, that is Spears’ best sales week for a digital song as well as largest debut for a woman as a lead artist. She beat out the record previously held by Taylor Swift . In February, Swift’s “Today Was a Fairytale” sold 325,000 downloads; incidentally, Swift broke the record previously held by Spears when that track debuted at the top of the charts. Spears bumps Bruno Mars’ “Grenade” to #2; Wiz Khalifa moved up the chart to #3 with “Black and Yellow,” followed by Katy Perry’s “Firework,” which dropped two spots to #4. Other newcomers to the chart include Avril Lavigne’s “What the Hell” at #6 and Jay-Z and Kanye West’s collaboration, “H.A.M.,” at #10. Enrique Iglesias’ “Tonight (I’m Lovin’ You)” (#5), the Black Eyed Peas’ “The Time (Dirty Bit)” (#7), Lil Wayne’s “6 Foot 7 Foot” (#8) and Ke$ha’s “We R Who We R” (#9) round out the top 10. Spears is also the top seller on iTunes. Last week, when the song was released, Spears immediately jumped to the top of the iTunes charts in 16 countries . “This is absolutely incredible!” her manager Adam Leber tweeted last week’s about the song’s success. “Brit’s fans never cease to amaze me.” Are you feeling “Hold It Against Me”? Rihanna Makes U.K. Chart History

Pop star is first female solo artist to score five #1 singles in consecutive years in the U.K. By James Dinh Rihanna Photo: Evan Agostini/AP Photo That Rihanna reign just won’t let up as the redheaded pop darling has set a new chart record in the United Kingdom. With her Drake-assisted “What’s My Name?” rising to the top spot, the singer, who recently filmed a video for her Nicki Minaj collabo “Fly,” has become the first female solo artist in U.K. chart history to score five #1 singles in consecutive years. According to the Official Charts Company , the pop star’s “What’s My Name?” nabbed the honorary position on the Official Singles Chart after its runner-up spot last week. Elvis Presley was the last solo act to achieve this record with #1 hits spanning from 1957 to 1963. And it doesn’t stop there as Rihanna is garnering some serious British sales for her latest album. Loud also holds on to the #1 spot on the Official Albums Chart this week, giving the pop princess the second U.K. chart double of her career. Back in 2007, Good Girl Gone Bad and her smash single “Umbrella” topped the chart simultaneously. Since its November release, Loud has sold nearly 900,000 copies in the U.K. RiRi took to Twitter to thank her legion of overseas fans. “Another week! LOUD and What’s my Name are the #1 ALBUM and SINGLE respectively!!! UK you are on FYAH!!! Rah Rah! THANK U! Where my #UKNavy,” she tweeted. In addition to the chart’s top honors, the Barbadian beauty has two other songs in the top 10, including her dance number “Only Girl (In the World)” and David Guetta collaboration “Who’s That Chick?” Music isn’t her only forte: The singer is expanding her empire with the launch of her first signature fragrance, called Reb’l Fleur , and her feature film debut in “Battleship,” hitting theaters in 2012. Sanchez Admits He’s Wrong: White House Did Say Unemployment Wouldn’t Exceed 8% If Stimulus Passed

CNN’s Rick Sanchez took a very strong position about a White House promise on Monday only to have to backtrack and admit he was wrong 45 minutes later. During Monday’s “Rick’s List,” Sanchez challenged Republican National Committee communications director Doug Heye about his claim that the Obama administration said the unemployment rate wouldn’t exceed eight percent if Congress enacted the President’s stimulus bill. “Doug, who made that promise?” asked a defiant Sanchez. “I never recall hearing the President of the United — in fact, I recall the very first speech the President of the United States made after being sworn in and the very first thing he said to Americans was, expect unemployment to go into double digits.” The CNN host arrogantly continued, “I don’t think you’re right. Prove me wrong.” About 45 minutes later, Sanchez marvelously proved himself wrong (videos follow with transcripts and commentary): RICK SANCHEZ, HOST: Doug — Doug, let me bring you into that conversation. What’s your take on what Lindsey Graham said yesterday that seems to be getting a lot of attention? DOUG HEYE, DIRECTOR OF COMMUNICATIONS, REPUBLICAN NATIONAL COMMITTEE: Well, he’s absolutely right. You look at what we were promised from the stimulus bill — and now, apparently, we have another $50 billion stimulus package coming at us — we were promised that unemployment would be under 8 percent. And it just isn’t the case nationally. And, certainly, in a lot of states — take Nevada, for instance. SANCHEZ: Who — who made — who made — Doug, Doug, who — who — Doug, who made — Doug, who made that promise? I — I never recall hearing the President of the United — in fact, I recall the very first speech the President of the United States made after being sworn in and the very first thing he said to Americans was, expect unemployment to go into double digits. Those were his exact words. So, now you’re saying that the president promised Americans that unemployment would be below 8 percent? I just — I’m not — I don’t think you’re right. Prove me wrong. About 45 minutes later, just after the President finished his Labor Day speech in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Sanchez proved himself wrong: SANCHEZ: Doug Heye is joining us once again, as is our own Jessica Yellin, who are going to be joining us on the other side of this. As we watch the president, by the way, it’s important to point out, and I mentioned a little while ago that he has his work cut out for him. I also mentioned before the president’s speech that — because Doug had mentioned, well, the White House had promised an unemployment rate of below eight percent. I asked him, had the president ever said that? Because the president had said you can almost guarantee double digits, though I’m not sure we got that as a nation, although a lot of states have seen double digit unemployment. You know what, Doug? I got the chart that you were referring to. It wasn’t the president. It wasn’t the vice president. It was Christina Romer. Come on over. Let’s show this to our viewers before we go to break. Put it in a box there if you want so we can continue to see the president. We’ll leave the president on one side, and I’ll show you this chart. See it right there? See the bold line? That’s the line that Christina Romer said — and there is eight percent — this is with the stimulus plan. She said we’d stay under eight percent. She said without stimulus we’d get up to nine percent. Obviously she was wrong. So, Doug, you were right, man. We’re going to come right back. This is “RICK’S LIST.” We’ll continue our conversations. Go ahead Doug. I’ll let you finish it out. Don’t brag now! DOUG HEYE, COMMUNICATIONS DIRECTOR, RNC: Barney Frank, Representative Barney Frank from Massachusetts said such a prediction, last month he said that was dumb. I tell you, it’s not often a Republican like myself agree with Barney Frank, but Barney Frank was right. SANCHEZ: That’s exactly what he said. You’re right. I read the quote while we were listening to the president, by the way. For the record, the chart Sanchez shared with his viewers comes from a January 9, 2009, report entitled “The Job Impact of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Plan” created by Romer and Jared Bernstein who is Vice President Biden’s chief economic adviser: As is clearly visible, this report graphically claimed that if stimulus was enacted, the White House believed unemployment would not exceed eight percent. As such, it is certainly noble that Sanchez discovered his own error and admitted it both to Heye and his viewers. However, it’s now twenty months since this projection was made, and it indeed has been an issue since the moment unemployment passed the eight percent mark. That Sanchez is just now discovering the administration made this claim is quite disturbing albeit not at all surprising.

Eminem’s Recovery Holds On To #1 Billboard Slot

Rapper retains his position despite four new names in top five. By Gil Kaufman Eminem Photo: Frederick M. Brown/ Getty Images How strong is Eminem ‘s run at the top of the Billboard 200 albums chart? In addition to locking down the #1 spot for seven out of the nine weeks since its release, Slim Shady will manage to hold his perch next week despite a rush of four new titles debuting in the top five. The rapper, who was just added to the roster of performers at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards , will keep his pole position again thanks to sales of 116,000, which pushed his to-date total above the 2.2 million mark, according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan. He also fended off four contenders, led by R&B singer Kem , whose Intimacy was well behind at #2 (74,000), followed by the latest from sandpaper-voiced singer Ray LaMontagne and his band the Pariah Dogs , God Willin’ & the Creek Don’t Rise (#3, 64,000), metal icons Iron Maiden with Final Frontier (#4, 63,000) and country singer Trace Adkins ‘ Cowboy’s Back in Town (#5, 50,000). The rest of the top 10: Lady Antebellum , Need You Now (#6, 32,000); the former #1 album from Arcade Fire , Suburbs , which dropped five spots to #7 on sales of 31,000 for a three-week total nearing 250,000; Justin Bieber ‘s My World 2.0 (#8, 30,000); the debut of mellow singer David Gray ‘s Foundling (#9, 25,000); and another new face, rock legend-turned-dustbowl-balladeer John Mellencamp ‘s No Better Than This (#10, 24,000). The Camp Rock 2 soundtrack had a short stay in the top 10, as it fell 10 spots in week two to #13 (23,000), while VMA-nominated Mumford & Sons ‘ Sigh No More continued a march up the charts, scooting up one to #19 as sales picked up by nearly 20 percent to 17,000. And Hey Monday landed at #25 with their latest, Beneath It All (14,000). After weeks of domination of the iTunes singles chart, Eminem’s iron grip was finally broken this week by (who else?) Lil Wayne. The incarcerated rapper’s “Right Above It” collabo with Drake took over the #1 spot, pushing Em’s Rihanna hookup, “Love the Way You Lie,” to #4, as Katy Perry’s “Teenage Dream” hung in at the #2 spot right in front of Taio Cruz’s “Dynamite.” Breaking into the chart this week was Nelly with “Just a Dream” at #7. Though iTunes does not release specific sales data, suffice it to say that Em held the top spot on the album tally again, followed by LaMontagne, a Lady Antebellum iTunes session, Arcade Fire, Gray, Mumford & Sons, Antebellum’s resurgent Need You Now, the chart debut of Maroon 5’s Hands All Over, Kem, and Maiden. He’s been the chart champ most of the summer (save for bumps by Arcade Fire and Avenged Sevenfold ), but it looks like Eminem’s Billboard domination could end for good with the release of Katy Perry ‘s Teenage Dream, the highly anticipated second album from the singer that has already spawned two massive hits. Also vying for the top is the third effort from former “American Idol” champ Fantasia , and an Usher remix/deluxe repackaging of Raymond v. Raymond called Versus. Related Artists Eminem

Lindsay Lohan Looks ‘Incredible’ In ‘Inferno’ Lingerie Pics, Director Says

‘I’ve never seen anybody who could turn it off like that and turn it on so intensely,’ Matthew Wilder tells MTV News. By Kara Warner Lindsay Lohan on the set of “Inferno” Photo: TylerShields.com Despite the provocative nature of the recently leaked promotional photos for “Inferno,” which feature a scantily clad Lindsay Lohan as porn star Linda Lovelace, director Matthew Wilder told MTV News the subject matter behind the biopic is not at all sexy. Wilder said the inspiration for that particular scene came from a very dark place (much like the tone of the entire film, which he explained earlier this year ): the first time Lovelace’s then-husband, Chuck Traynor, forced her into pornography. “The [photos] represent the scene that you will see in the movie,” Wilder said. “Her husband took her to a hotel room. [He] kind of ambushed her and didn’t tell her what was going on.” Lovelace once wrote that her initiation into prostitution was a “gang rape by five men, arranged by Mr. Traynor.” Wilder said the photos, which were used in a promotional campaign to secure financing for the film at the Cannes Film Festival, are kind of “an abstract interpretation” of that incident. Wilder said what surprised him most about the photos was Lohan’s look. “It’s interesting, because she looks really incredible,” he said. “Linda Lovelace was not remotely this good-looking. It was really strange. This is really kind of like that movie thing, where everything is kicked up one or two degrees beyond reality.” Adding to Lohan’s physicality are her acting chops, which Wilder said she can turn on and off in the blink of an eye. “There’s a scene that we did, I don’t know if we printed photos from it or not,” Wilder explained. “But we put her in a chair, and she went into this total volcanic meltdown and then just like a second later snapped out of it and walked away, walked back and was talking normally to everyone else. … I’ve never seen anybody who could turn it off like that and turn it on so intensely and then kind of walk away.” Moving forward, Wilder said production on “Inferno” will begin as soon as Lohan is ready after her release from the UCLA Medical Center rehab facility. “There is talk about going in November,” he said. “It’s good. We’ve just got to wait until our star gets out of the [treatment facility], and then we’ll be on our way.” He added that he hasn’t spoken with Lohan yet, just her mother, Dina. “I don’t know if she can talk,” Wilder said. “It’s one of those things where you can talk to her at certain times and certain times you can’t, I don’t really know.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Avenged Sevenfold’s Johnny Christ On Band’s #1 Debut, Nightmare

‘It’s a testament to the fans about how much they care about what we do,’ bassist Johnny Christ says about topping the Billboard albums chart. By Kyle Anderson Avenged Sevenfold’s Johnny Christ Photo: Getty Images It looked as though Eminem’s Recovery would be spending most of the summer at the top of the Billboard albums chart, at least until Katy Perry got around to dropping Teenage Dream later this month. But as we learned this week, you should never count out the savage power of California punk-metallers Avenged Sevenfold, who stormed the top of the charts with their fifth album, Nightmare. It’s the first trip to the top of the chart for the band, and they celebrated appropriately. “I got the call from my manager last night,” bassist Johnny Christ told MTV News. “Unfortunately, Matt [Sanders, better known as M. Shadows] and Zack [a.k.a. Zacky Vengeance] were doing press in L.A., but me and Brian [a.k.a. Synyster Gates] went out to celebrate and had some dinner together. It was pretty fun. It was more about the drinks. We were just drinking, having a good time. We should have been being good boys and not drinking last night, but it’s the first time we’re on the top of the Billboard, and that only happens once. We had to do something.” Of course, the chart victory is bittersweet for the men of A7X, as the celebration had to happen without drummer Jimmy “The Rev” Sullivan, who passed away in December 2009 of an accidental drug overdose. Christ (born Jonathan Seward) thinks of it as the latest in a long line of tributes to Sullivan. “The only thing we were worried about was getting it done and doing the best job we can for our brother,” he said. “We wanted to make this record as big and strong as possible. We wanted to make this a really huge record and get it out there to as many people as possible to extend Jimmy’s legacy.” In addition to the need to carry on Sullivan’s legacy, the men of Avenged Sevenfold were also fueled by their ever-growing fanbase, which has made them incrementally larger with each release. “We have the greatest fans in the world, and our growth has been so organic. It’s online, it’s out at the shows. It’s a big family, and they know we’re going to do our best, and we know they’re going to give it their best. “It’s a testament to the fans about how much they care about what we do,” he continued. “It’s not as much about the numbers as much as it is that our fans made a mark on this world for us.” Avenged Sevenfold are about to begin rehearsing for the Uproar Tour, which kicks off August 17 in Minneapolis and also features Disturbed, Stone Sour, Hellyeah and Halestorm. Eminem’s ‘Not Afraid’ Enters Billboard Hot 100 At #1

Recovery track is only 16th single to claim that feat in chart’s 52-year history. By Jayson Rodriguez Eminem Photo: Michael Loccisano/Getty Images Add another triumph to the long list of achievements for Eminem . The Detroit lyricist will land atop the Billboard Hot 100 on Thursday, when his latest single, “Not Afraid,” debuts at #1, marking only the 16th time in the chart’s history that a record has premiered in the lead slot. According to Billboard, Eminem has now joined a select group of artists that includes Michael Jackson (“You Are Not Alone”), Whitney Houston (“Exhale [Shoop, Shoop]”), Celine Dion (“My Heart Will Go On”), Lauryn Hill (“Doo Wop [That Thing]”) and Diddy (“I’ll Be Missing You”), among others. Mariah Carey leads the pack with three songs having debuted at #1 on the chart, “Fantasy,” “Honey” and her collaboration with Boyz II Men, “One Sweet Day.” “American Idol” has impacted the charts in a big way in recent years, as tunes by Clay Aiken, Fantasia, Carrie Underwood and Taylor Hicks have also opened in the Hot 100 top spot. And the last artist to accomplish that feat was Britney Spears, whose 2009 hit “3” reached the chart’s summit in its first week. “Not Afraid” is Eminem’s first offering from June 22’s Recovery, the follow-up to last year’s Relapse. Late last month, Eminem announced the single via Twitter, writing simply “I’m Not Afraid.” The song debuted online April 29, and on the track Eminem acknowledged his bumpy comeback after a five-year hiatus, calling his last album “ehh,” before promising better material on the upcoming Recovery. “To the fans, I’ll never let you down again, I’m back/ I promise to never go back on that promise,” Em spits in the second verse. “In fact, let’s be honest/ That last Relapse CD was ‘ehh’/ Perhaps I ran them accents into the ground/ Relax, I ain’t going to do that now.” What do you think about Eminem’s achievement?
