Watch: Whitney Houston Lends Tragic Power to Glossy Sparkle Trailer

How much has Whitney Houston ‘s tragic death propelled the musical remake of Sparkle into the spotlight? Consider: I’m 99% sure Matt Lauer has never seen “the 1976 movie called Sparkle ,” but even the Today Show did a segment on the first trailer for the August release, which prompted robo-Kathie Lee Gifford to exclaim “I was flooded with emotions as I watched it.” See if you feel the same after watching Houston’s churchgoing mother attempt to help her daughters navigate the pitfalls of fame, Dreamgirls -style. Like 1976’s Sparkle , which starred Irene Cara in the title role of Sparkle Williams, Lonette McKee as her sexpot sister, Sister, and Mary Alice as their quietly-suffering mother, the Salim Akil-directed remake follows the ups and downs of a Motown-era girl group as they deal with success, men, drugs, infighting, and assorted other drama. (If it sounds an awful lot like Dreamgirls , there’s a reason: The film’s success paved the way for and influenced the subsequent Broadway show, which follows a very similar story.) Following with its predecessor, we’ll get new renditions of the songs Sparkle made famous, including the catchy “Hooked On Your Love” and “(Giving Him) Something He Can Feel,” a song later remade memorably by En Vogue. This summer’s remake stars American Idol’s Jordin Sparks as Sparkle, British actress-singer Carmen Ejogo as Sister, and Tika Sumpter as the third (and let’s be real, more forgettable) sis Dolores, with assorted other familiar names filling in the cast: Cee-Lo Green as R&B star Black, Derek Luke as Sparkle’s decent songwriter boyfriend Stix, Mike Epps as seedy gangster/woman abuser Satin. Houston plays the girls’ mother in a role that seems considerably bumped up from the original, but while watching her aglow onscreen is mighty saddening, her storyline doesn’t seem to overshadow the greater saga. That said, the trailer makes no mention of the film’s heavy drug subplot, which was always the part of Sparkle that made it hit home. Like 1972’s Lady Sings the Blues , this backstage R&B musical had a gritty realness to it; it was melodramatic, sure, but you felt the desperation of these characters — to make it at their first talent contest, to battle through petty jealousies, and later, to smile through the bruises — in every gloriously dark moment. Sparkle’s turn from mousy back-up singer to empowered starlet felt like a real transformation, but here Jordin Sparks looks all manicured and well-coiffed and put together from the start. Inevitably, the specter of Houston’s death looming over Sparkle will make its tragic themes resonate beyond what’s onscreen, and her gospel number will top the charts. Kathie Lee will cry. As will I. Verdict: As a Sparkle fan, I am hesitantly curious; as a Whitney fan, it’s a no-brainer.

Britney Spears Would Be ‘Great Fit’ For ‘X Factor,’ Marcus Canty Says

‘She would give me that pop I need,’ last season’s fourth-place finisher tells MTV News of rumored addition to judges’ table. By Christina Garibaldi Marcus Canty Photo: MTV News During his final appearance on “The X Factor,” Marcus Canty promised his fans it was “not over” for him yet, and he was right. The fourth-place finisher, who wowed viewers with his energetic stage presence and smooth R&B style, recently signed to Epic Records and has released his debut single, “Won’t Make a Fool Out of You.” Yet at one time it seemed like we might never have heard his music at all. Before “X Factor” Canty tried but failed to get through the audition rounds for “American Idol.” “I tried ‘American Idol.’ I got in front of the judges, I sang my little heart out, but I guess I didn’t make it,” Canty revealed to MTV News. “I guess they didn’t want me.” “Idol” may not have wanted Canty, but “The X Factor” did. With help from his mother, Canty reluctantly decided to step in front of the judges, hoping to get his chance to go to Hollywood. “The funny thing is that I didn’t want to do ‘X Factor’ at first. I was just like, ‘Man, I’m gonna do it myself,’ then I look on the bill and I see L.A. Reid, and I’m like, ‘Wait a minute, that’s L.A. Reid!’ ” Canty said. “For so long I’ve been trying to get music to him. When it came that time, my mom was like, ‘Look, you should just try it.” With Reid as his mentor, Canty battled his way to a fourth-place finish with some show-stopping performances that gained him comparisons to Al Green and Bobby Brown. Canty also developed relationships with the other judges on the show, including former mentors Paula Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger . “I actually was kind of surprised,” Canty said of the departures of Abdul and Scherzinger. “I thought it was a lot of drama on the show with Paula and Nicole, but they were so nice.” Canty was no stranger to drama himself. The R&B crooner found himself in the bottom two during several episodes, most notably edging out Rachel Crow in an emotional and controversial finish . “I feel like Paula was honest. I feel like Nicole was honest — even in certain situations on the show that they got into, with me and Rachel and at one point, me and Drew,” Canty said. “If I was in that situation I probably wouldn’t know what to do.” With Scherzinger and Abdul out of the judges’ seats, rumors have been swirling that pop star Britney Spears may fill one of the vacant spots. “Oh wow, I haven’t heard that one. Britney Spears, wow. That should be interesting,” Canty said in response to the news. “Britney Spears can be my mentor because, first of all, I was the entertainer. I know she would give me that pop I need. That’s definitely a great fit.” Related Artists Britney Spears

Madonna And Lionel Richie To Reunite On Billboard Charts?

The singers are expected to return to the top five next week, the first time they’ve been chart mates in 26 years. By Gil Kaufman Madonna on cover of True Blue and Lionel Richie on cover of Dancing on the Ceiling Photo: Sire/ Motown America was still four years away from the first of three wars in the Middle East, Lady Gaga was a newborn, and the Internet was just a twinkle in the eye of some academic nerds’ coke-bottle glasses. That’s how long it’s been since Madonna and Lionel Richie were both in the top five of the Billboard 200 chart at the same time. The year was 1986, and Richie was riding high with his smash #1 album, Dancing on the Ceiling, while Madge was at #5 with her former #1, True Blue. Next week the pair will be chart mates again, as Madonna’s dance-tastic MDNA is predicted to sell between 300,000 and 350,000 copies to take the top spot, while Richie’s album of country re-workings of his biggest hits, Tuskegee, should land at #2 on sales of 125,000 to 150,000. Back in the day, both were celebrating the release of their third album. Madonna dedicated her “girliest” work to date to her then-husband, actor Sean Penn, even as she began delving into more topical songs (“Papa Don’t Preach”) and Latin rhythms (“La Isla Bonita”). For an artist who’d already ascended to pop stardom with her first two discs, True Blue was a chance for Madonna to expand her fanbase, and though it debuted at #28, it eventually reached #1, where it stayed for five weeks. Among the singles released from the album are “Live to Tell,” the title track and “Open Your Heart.” It went on to sell more than 25 million copies worldwide. For Richie, it was also a time of transition. The former Commodores singer — who was born in Tuskegee, Alabama — had scored some hits on his first two solo albums, including “My Love,” the Caribbean-spiced “All Night Long,” “Hello” and “Running With the Night.” While Madonna continues to be one of the biggest live draws in the world and a global superstar, Dancing on the Ceiling marked the beginning of the end of Richie’s mass popularity. But, the famously well-coiffed singer went out with a huge bang. Not only was the title cut a #1 single and hugely popular video, but the album also spawned the moving ballad “Say You, Say Me,” as well as “Love Will Conquer All” and “Ballerina Girl.” While Madonna continued to crank out hit albums such as Like a Prayer, Erotica and Bedtime Stories, it would be 10 years before Richie was back on the charts. His Louder Than Words came out in April 1996, debuting at #33 and not spawning any memorable hits. Against the usual pop music odds, Madonna is still launching singles onto the charts, recently played the most coveted gig in music — the Super Bowl halftime show — and has collaborated with modern stars like Nicki Minaj. Richie has been lower-profile, but served a well-received stint as a guest mentor on the second-biggest reality music competition on TV, “The Voice,” and he roped in such big-name country stars as Kenny Chesney, Shania Twain, Jason Aldean, Darius Rucker, Rascal Flatts, Sugarland’s Jennifer Nettles, Blake Shelton, Willie Nelson and old pal Kenny Rogers. One Direction’s Up All Night Poised To Best Adele, Springsteen

Boy band’s debut album is amping up for a #1 debut on Billboard albums chart next week. By Jocelyn Vena One Direction Photo: Larry Busacca/ Getty Images Adele lost the top spot on the Billboard chart this week to Bruce Springsteen, and it seems that five British boy-banders are also eyeing the crown for next week’s chart. One Direction ‘s U.S. debut, Up All Night , is looking to sell big and give the big-voiced British songstress and the Boss a run for their money. “There didn’t seem to be much hype until all of a sudden it sort of exploded,” Keith Caulfield, associate director of charts at Billboard, told MTV News about the tween phenomenon hitting the mainstream. “The album should do somewhere in the range of 160,000 to 180,000, that’s what we’re projecting right now. It’s a little hard to gauge just because they’re so youth-appealing and because they’re basically a boy band, it’s hard to project how consumers will react to the album. It could go higher; it could go a little lower. So, it has a definite shot at #1. And if it does debut at #1, [we’re reporting that] it would mark the first time a British group’s first album has debuted at #1. “But Adele could still pull it out and block them. It’s kind of up in the air right now,” Caulfield added. “It’s kind of a race.” What may help them keep that longevity alive is the onslaught of American love they have been receiving lately. Nickelodeon confirmed that the guys now have a development deal with the network and are set to appear on one of its biggest shows, “iCarly,” next season. “One Direction really worked social media and were really active at getting their fanbase energized,” Caulfield said. “It really depends on how far they can reach outside of their core base [to continue selling records and sustain that momentum]. Will they be able to be accepted on radio? Will they become a pop culture phenomenon outside of [teen girls]? With all the right moves, they can do it.” But as soon as the 1D wave washes over the charts and a Boy-band bonanza continues, another, brasher group of lads is also eyeing chart domination. The Wanted will drop their self-titled U.S. debut on April 24. So, can they sell just as big? “The Wanted skew older. Their music is more mature in its content, so naturally they are going to skew a little older,” Caulfield told us, noting that One Direction’s tweened-out fandom won’t be replicated with the Wanted. “Does that mean they won’t sell as much? Well, no, they’re going to appeal to a different group of people. So, it’s too early to tell what the Wanted will do, but considering the single [‘Glad You Came’ is] doing so well, that at least gives positive energy towards what the album will do,” he said. “We didn’t know what One Direction was going to do until this week. One Direction has that [tween] appeal that makes people want to invest in that phenomenon.” Who do you think will take the #1 spot next week: One Direction, Adele or Bruce Springsteen? One Direction: A Guide To The Biggest Boy Band Around

After thousands turned out to see the British group perform on ‘Today,’ we look at who they are and how they got so big so fast. By John Mitchell One Direction Photo: Courtesy of Columbia Records On Monday morning (March 12), One Direction made their American television debut on “Today,” performing their hits “What Makes You Beautiful,” “One Thing” and “More Than This” in front of what was, according to Matt Lauer, one of the biggest crowds ever to pack the plaza — right up there with the numbers attracted by top pop acts like Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber. If the throngs of screaming teenage girls left you scratching your head, wondering what all the fuss was about, it’s not your fault. These guys seem to have come out of nowhere and already have people asking, “Are One Direction the next Beatles?” Why is everyone suddenly talking about One Direction? Let’s take a look. What is One Direction? We’re glad you asked. One Direction is a five-member boy band. They are already very popular in their native U.K. (hence the Beatles comparison), where their debut album, Up All Night, has already gone double-platinum . Night is being released in the U.S. on Tuesday. Though the lead single from Night, “What Makes You Beautiful,” has only recently been added to U.S. radio, it is already a hit, with sales of 255,000 in just three weeks, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The song debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 at #28 in late February, giving the boys the highest debut chart position of any U.K. act since the Spice Girls’ “Wannabe” opened at #11 in January 1997. “Beautiful,” a carefree pop ditty with an infectious chorus, bested Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep” to take home the fan-voted Best British Single prize at the BRIT Awards last month. The fan frenzy around One Direction is reminiscent of the early days of Bieber Fever. When the band made its first public appearance in the U.S. at Boston’s Natick Mall on March 4, more than 5,000 screaming fans descended on the shopping center. It was a relatively peaceful scene, though, especially when compared to the riot that broke out in 2009 when the 3,000 fans who had gathered at Long Island’s Roosevelt Field Mall to see Bieber began pushing and shoving as they got word that police were canceling the event because the crowd had become too rowdy. A likely reason the band already has such a large and fervent fanbase here in the U.S. despite being new to the scene is their accessibility on YouTube, where the video for “What Makes You Beautiful” has nearly 69 million views. YouTube is also largely credited with launching Bieber. Who is in the band? The five English and Irish gents in One Direction are Niall Horan, 18, Zayn Malik, 19, Liam Payne, 18, Harry Styles, 18, and Louis Tomlinson, 20. In typical boy-band fashion, each guy has his own shtick. This morning on “Today,” we learned that Horan is the “cute little Irish one,” Malik is the “quiet and mysterious” one, Payne is “the sensible one,” Styles is “the charming one” and Tomlinson is “the funny one.” Each group member appeared on the 2010 season of the U.K. version of “The X Factor,” where they tried and failed to make the cut in the individual boys category. At the suggestion of the show’s producers, they joined forces and re-entered as a group . Together as One Direction, they ultimately finished third in the competition and were signed to “X Factor” creator Simon Cowell’s Syco Records. What’s next? The sky’s the limit. One Direction recently wrapped up a small joint tour with another boy band, Big Time Rush , and its success inspired Entertainment Weekly to run a story with a headline asking, “Are Boy Bands Officially Back?” Considering the success of the Wanted , who just wrapped their tour of the U.S. and U.K. at Dublin’s massive O2 Arena on Friday and will release their U.S. debut April 24, it’s a question many are now asking. It’s been a long time since the Backstreet Boys, ‘NSYNC and 98 Degrees ruled pop radio, and the out-of-nowhere success of the Wanted and One Direction have a lot of people wondering whether, after several years of hip-hop stars and pop divas ruling the charts, we’re in for a boy-band revival. One Direction are already booked to perform at the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards on March 31 as well as on “Saturday Night Live” on April 7. The band’s December-January Up All Night tour of the U.K. sold out in minutes, prompting the band to add an Oceania leg with five dates planned across Australia and New Zealand in April. The next logical step would be a tour of the U.S., though no plans have been announced. What do you think of One Direction? Is it all just hype or will the boys be around for a while? Adele’s 21 Ties Whitney Houston Chart Record

Houston’s Greatest Hits re-enters Billboard albums chart at #6 with only one day of sales after her death. By Gil Kaufman Adele Photo: Andreas Rentz/ Getty Images Grammy queen Adele will celebrate a career landmark next week when her Album of the Year-winning 21 matches a Billboard 200 chart record. The excitement will come with a tinge of sadness, though, as the remarkable 20th nonconsecutive week at #1 matches the high-water mark set by Whitney Houston ‘s “Bodyguard” soundtrack in 1992-93. In a tragic coincidence, Adele matched that mark in the same week that the “I Will Always Love You” singer was found dead Saturday at age 48 in her Los Angeles hotel room. The death came less than 24 hours before Adele scooped up six Grammys for 21, which will mark a full year on the charts during the next reporting cycle. Adele reached that mark with sales of 237,000 copies of her album, a 95 percent increase over the previous week, according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan. The increase pushed the album past the 6.6 million mark in total sales, and experts predict that sales could double yet again next week in the wake of the Grammy triumph. There were plenty of other new faces in the almost all-new top 10, including reunited rock icons Van Halen , whose comeback album with original lead singer David Lee Roth, A Different Kind of Truth, will come in at #2 on sales of 187,000. Right behind was Now That’s What I Call Music! 41 (#3, 142,000), followed by Scars & Stories by The Fray , Paul McCartney ‘s covers album Kisses From the Bottom (#5, 74,000) and Houston’s resurgent Whitney: The Greatest Hits, which, within just one day of her death, climbed to #6 with sales of 64,000. The uptick represents a 10,419 percent gain over the previous week, when it moved just 1,000 copies. Country star Dierks Bentley ‘s Home debuted at #7 (55,000) and the 2012 Grammy Nominees album was at #8 (51,000). Adele’s debut, 19, jumped up 10 places to #9 as sales increased 103 percent to 36,000, and Drake ‘s Take Care rounded out the top 10 with sales of 32,000. Though the true Grammy bump won’t hit until next week, show performers Coldplay got an early boost, with sales of Mylo Xyloto up 105 percent to 28,000 as the album moved 14 spots to #14. It was a harsh second-week comedown for polarizing pinup crooner Lana Del Rey , though, as her debut, Born to Die, suffered a 62 percent drop, plunging 11 spots to #13 on sales of 29,000. Tune in as we celebrate the life of an icon with “Whitney Houston: In Her Own Words” tonight at 7:30 p.m. ET on MTV. Whitney Houston Sells 1 Million Albums, Singles Since Death

Singer’s catalog sales surged following her death, including nearly 900,000 individual tracks moved. By Gil Kaufman Whitney Houston Photo: Jan Persson/ Getty Images Much as they did after the deaths of Michael Jackson and Amy Winehouse , fans of Whitney Houston rushed out to buy the late diva’s music in the wake of her passing on Saturday . Billboard reported that Houston’s only hits package, Whitney: The Greatest Hits, is poised to re-enter the Billboard 200 chart this week at #6 after selling 64,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Most amazingly, that jump in purchases represent just one full day of sales, since the reporting week ended on February 12. Houston was found dead midday in Los Angeles the day before of as-yet-undetermined causes. The uptick for the Greatest collection represents a 10,419 percent gain over the pervious week, when it moved just under 1,000 copies. A number of other Houston albums also moved back up the charts, including her 1986 debut Whitney Houston, which jumped to #72 on sales of 8,000 (a 3,901 percent rise), the soundtrack to “The Bodyguard” (#80 on sales of 8,000, up 5,213 percent) and her final studio album, I Look to You (#118 on sales of 5,000, up 3,901 percent). The magazine reported that more Houston albums were purchased in the last week — over 101,000 — than had been sold in all of 2011 and 2012 to date. The most impressive figures, though, were the number of digital tracks fans purchased. In all, there were 887,000 downloads over the past week, a gain of 5,730 over the previous week’s 15,000 tracks sold. The biggest gainer was, of course, her signature song, “I Will Always Love You,” which moved 195,000 units, a 6,742 percent gain over the previous week. While that song enters the Digital Songs chart at #3, seven other songs hit the Digital Songs chart as well, including “I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)” (#25, 74,000, up 8,769 percent), “Greatest Love of All” (#32, 60,000, up 7,270 percent), “How Will I Know” (#46, 43,000, up 5,767 percent), “I Have Nothing” (#53, 38,000, up 5,179 percent), “Saving All My Love for You” (#65, 33,000, up 6,423 percent), “One Moment in Time” (#74, 30,000, up 6,206 percent) and Houston’s rendition of “The Star Spangled Banner” (#75, 29,000, up 8,278 percent). Next week’s chart should see an even bigger boost to Houston’s catalog as it will reflect a full week of sales. Taylor Swift Looking To ‘Evolve’ On Next Album

‘Love is always going to be a huge theme in what I write about,’ singer tells MTV News after premiering ‘Safe & Sound’ video. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Sway Calloway Taylor Swift Photo: MTV News In 2010, Taylor Swift released the Grammy-winning Speak Now. The album was a study in the complexities of love and life, full of ponderings on the romance of new love and the pain of a broken affair. Drawing inspiration from her own life, the album topped the charts and kept Swift ever-present. As she embarks on her next album release, she tells MTV News that she’s still got work to do, even if her bosses at the record label are ready to pull the trigger on it. “So far, I’ve been writing so much in the last year and the label keeps telling me, ‘All right, we’re finished; all right, we’re satisfied; OK, this is done now.’ And then I just keep writing and I keep turning it in in different versions,” she told MTV News’ Sway during “MTV First: Taylor Swift,” when she dropped her video for her “The Hunger Games” track, “Safe & Sound.” “I’m going to work on it until I literally have zero time left to work on it, because I’m having so much fun working on this album,” she explained. “I made my last album, Speak Now, with this idea I really wanted to make an album without writing with anyone else just because I always wanted to do that. And now I have a different approach to this record. I’m getting to work with people that I’ve always wanted to work with.” That means that she’s seeking out some assistance “from all different places in music.” “I’m trying to be as much of a sponge as possible,” she explained. “You have to evolve and try new things and change and that’s what I’ve loved to do with this album.” But just because she’s trying some new things musically doesn’t mean she’s quite ready to move on from writing about love. “I think that love is always going to be a huge theme in what I write about just because there are no two similar relationships, there are no two times that you feel love the same way or hurt the same way or [feel] rejection [in] the same way. It’s all different and I’m fascinated by that,” she said. “I really love to go back to human interaction and the way we make each other feel. But that at 22 is different than it was at 18 or 19 when I made my last album and 16 and 17 when I made Fearless. As you grow, you change in the way you process emotion.” What are you hoping to hear on Taylor Swift’s next album? Leave your comment below! Related Videos MTV First: Taylor Swift
