Kanye West, Jay-Z’s Watch The Throne Scores Huge On Billboard

Album sold 436,000 in its first week, including a record 290,000 on iTunes. By Gil Kaufman Jay-Z and Kanye West Photo: Johnny Nunez/ WireImage The Throne will get a royal reception on the Billboard 200 albums charts next week. Watch the Throne , the superstar hookup between Kanye West and Jay-Z , sold more than 436,000 copies in its first week, according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan, putting up the second-biggest debut sales week of the year so far, behind Lady Gaga ‘s Born This Way, which moved 1.1 million. Thanks to a three-day iTunes exclusive that launched last Monday (August 8-10), the pair also reportedly broke the record for the biggest iTunes debut ever, selling almost 290,000 digital copies, enough to beat out former record-holder Coldplay ‘s Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends, which sold 282,000 copies in 2008. According to Billboard , with 321,000 total downloads, Throne is second only to Born This Way (662,000) for the biggest digital week ever. See what fans thought of the Watch the Throne pop-up store, which appeared in NYC last week. The album might have sold more, but some experts said its staggered release — following the iTunes exclusive, it was available to all digital and physical sellers on Friday, giving fans only two days to snatch it up before SoundScan’s tracking week ended on Sunday — may have curtailed its first-week sales potential. Either way, it’s a huge score for both rappers, earning Jay his 12th #1 album and Kanye his fifth. There are a few other debuts in the top 10, but they pale in comparison to the Throne numbers. Country singer Luke Bryan ‘s Tailgates & Tanlines comes in at #2 (145,000), the Now 39 compilation is just behind at #3 (110,000) and rapper Ace Hood hits #8 with Blood Sweat & Tears (26,000). The rest of the top 10: Adele ‘s 21 (#4, 73,000), Eric Church ‘s Chief (#5, 37,000), Jason Aldean ‘s My Kinda Party (#6, 36,000), Beyonc

Amy Winehouse’s 2007 MTV Movie Awards Performance: A Look Back

‘It was an epic performance of ‘Rehab,’ Mark Burnett, the award show’s executive producer, says. By Rob Markman Amy Winehouse performs at the 2007 MTV Movie Awards Photo: Jeff Kravitz/ Getty Images The 2007 MTV Movie Awards show was all the way live, and the late Amy Winehouse, who was found dead in her London home on Saturday, provided one of the show’s many highlights with a spectacular performance of her hit single “Rehab.” Click for photos of Amy Winehouse’s life and career. Introduced by actor Bruce Willis, Winehouse took the stage and thrilled the Hollywood crowd with her soulful vocal runs of true-to-life lyrics. But what turned out to be one of the singer’s more memorable performances almost wasn’t. The 2007 ceremony marked the first time that MTV’s Movie Awards aired live, and the unpredictable Winehouse almost threw things out of whack. Sadly, the song “Rehab” was all too real for the rising Brit star, who began canceling shows during her ascent up the charts. Her team cited “health issues,” while rumors of substance abuse problems became inescapable. Still, Winehouse quickly became a fan favorite, and her performance at the Movie Awards proved to be a big draw. After showing up late for her rehearsal, which took place the night before the live show, the British singer rendezvoused off to Las Vegas for a party with photographer David LaChapelle. MTV protested, but still Winehouse made way for the Strip less than 12 hours before she was needed back in California to perform. Things shouldn’t have come as much of a surprise considering the numerous bumps MTV experienced when taping her for another show, “45th at Night,” earlier that year. “Just about every song, she stopped. She walked offstage,” Garrett English, MTV executive in charge of production at the time, said. “It was difficult for her to work all the way through the set. Knowing that she was going to be on the Movie Awards in a true live environment was a little bit concerning.” “We had to let her go, stay in touch and hope for the best,” MTV talent executive Robin Katz said. The show’s producers didn’t hear from Winehouse’s camp until an hour before showtime, when they received a text that confirmed the singer had returned from Sin City and was heading to the Gibson Amphitheater in Universal City, California, where the ceremony was taking place. Despite the scare, once Amy took the stage, she performed as only Amy could. She hit her mark, and the star-studded crowd loved it. “It was an epic performance of ‘Rehab,’ ” Mark Burnett, the awards show’s executive producer, said. “Edgy, as Amy always is, and it really fits the vibe of MTV.” Amy Winehouse was found dead Saturday at the age of 27, and despite all of her troubles, she still remained a favorite among fans and music contemporaries alike. Rick Ross’ Upcoming LP A ‘Classic In The Making’

‘He is talking that talk, ‘ DJ Khaled tells MTV News of Rozay’s God Forgives, I Don’t. By Rob Markman Rick Ross and DJ Khaled Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Rick Ross has seen his star rise with each release, and for his upcoming album, God Forgives, I Don’t, his buddy DJ Khaled promises a classic. Rozay isn’t finished recording and the LP doesn’t have a release date yet, but Khaled — whose album We the Best Forever is in stores this week — is already making big predictions. ” God Forgives, I Don’t is a classic-in-the-making. Let me tell you something right now: This album is so crazy from the beginning of what I’ve been in the studio hearing already,” he told MTV News on Wednesday (July 20). “I can’t give you too much because I’m going to let him do that, because that’s his project, but I could tell you right now it’s classic and he is talking that talk. ” As far as Ross’ albums go, it has been a year since his last LP, Teflon Don, was released, but the rotund Miami rapper has kept a high profile, releasing his Maybach Music Group project Self Made, Vol. 1 in May. Compilation singles like “Tupac Back” and “Ima Boss” have kept Ross on the charts, as well as songs on which Ross is featured (Lil Wayne’s “John” and Khaled’s “I’m On One”), have kept the Miami MC on the airwaves. Khaled noted his homey’s growth, telling us the Bawse gets better with each album. ” God Forgives, I Don’t, it fits the time because right now it’s no rules,” Khaled said. “We don’t see ’em; we going hard and that’s what Ross is doin’.” Are you looking forward to Ross’ album? Pitbull ‘Transitions’ But Still Gets Respect From Hip-Hop

‘I’ve been on tracks with the best,’ Pit tells MTV News of his evolution to global MC. By Rob Markman Pitbull Photo: MTV News Pitbull has made major moves throughout his seven-year career. Getting his start under the tutelage of Luther Campbell (a.k.a. Luke) and influenced by Miami booty bass, Pitbull got his big break in 2004 with the Lil Jon-assisted single “Culo.” But while his musical origins may have been rooted in bass music and the crunk movement of the early-2000s, Pitbull has grown into a rapper with mass appeal. His first album, M.I.A.M.I. (Money is a Major Issue), was dedicated to his hometown and exemplified his local accessibility but his latest, Planet Pit, exemplifies his worldwide reach. “I think from M.I.A.M.I. to Planet Pit, how it transitions, what it shows is maturity, growth, evolution, someone that’s been learning, applying, observing,” Pit told MTV News last week while he was in Orlando performing at a Zumba fitness convention. Planet Pit features the rapper’s Zumba-inspired single “Pause,’ and has already given Pit his first #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with “Give Me Everything.” The album’s sound isn’t rooted in the block, as were earlier songs like “Rain Over Me” featuring salsa great Marc Anthony and the Chris Brown-laced “International Love.” Instead, his latest aims to break global boundaries. But while Pit’s music may not be as hip-hop-oriented these days, the Cuban-American hit-maker said he still gets his respect. “As far as getting acceptance from hip-hop, does it bother me? In no way shape or form,” he said when asked how it feels move beyond the rap community. “I’ve been on tracks with the best or what they consider the best. I’ve been on tracks with Rick Ross, Lil Wayne, Fat Joe. … On those tracks, I think I definitely held my own and everybody respects me for the simple fact that I’ve created my own lane.” In 2006, Pit laid his rapid-fire rhymes on DJ Khaled’s “Holla at Me,” alongside Wayne, Ross, Fat Joe and Paul Wall; he also rhymed with Ross and Trick Daddy on the Miami-ode “Born-n-Raised” that same year. Since then, the Miami rapper has expanded his repertoire, collaborating with Usher (“DJ Got Us Fallin’ in Love”) and Jennifer Lopez (“On the Floor”), as well as producers like RedOne and Afrojack. Pit’s musical growth has given him a bigger platform, but also something else far more invaluable. “Instead of speaking to the block, I rather speak to the globe so the block can go, ‘Oh wait a second, there is a whole lot more out there,’ ” Pit explained. “And that’s where the respect and credibility comes into play. You can’t buy that and no record can buy that.” What do you think of Pit’s latest album? Share your reviews in the comments! Related Artists Pitbull

Mary J. Blige ‘Reaching In Deep’ For My Life Sequel

‘We want to live,’ Blige tells MTV News about My Life Too: The Journey Continues, due in October. By Rebecca Thomas Mary J. Blige performs at the 2011 Essence Music Festival Photo: Getty Images Mary J. Blige was a troubled 23-year-old when she dropped her classic My Life album. On the surface, she was “ghetto fabulous” — draped in high-priced, ’90s-era DKNY duds and oversize Versace glasses — but beneath the veneer, the Queen of hip-hop soul was broken, abusing drugs and swept up in one bad romance after another. Being too young and too raw to tell anything but the truth, the girl from the Schlobohm housing projects in Yonkers, New York, poured all that turmoil into her sophomore album and then watched as tracks like “Be Happy” and “I’m Going Down” slow-strutted up the charts to the tune of more than 3 million albums sold. Now, 16 years (and several Grammys and platinum plaques) later, MJB plans to revisit her enduring second disc with the release of My Life Too: The Journey Continues, due in October. “It’s called The Journey Continues because on the first My Life album, we all just were depressed and wanted to die. This one, we want to live, and we understand with living, life still comes with challenges and triumphs and good times and bad times,” Blige told MTV News at the Essence Music Festival earlier this month, where she was not only honored for her charitable work at the McDonald’s 365Black Awards but also closed out the New Orleans fest. Among the beatmakers Blige has tapped to work on the sequel is Swizz Beatz , and she teased what fans can expect to hear. “There’s ballads, there’s midtempos, uptempos. There’s love songs, there’s pain songs. There’s triumph songs, there’s workout songs. There’s all kinda stuff!” she laughed. “This one is definitely what people are looking for from me, and I’m digging and I’m reaching in deep to give them what they need.” Blige is well aware of the My Life legacy , how fans connected to her slow-drip brand of blues. The singer even complained in ’08 that many of her followers didn’t want her to be happy , preferring the dark tunes she cooked up while depressed to her newer love songs. So, Mary’s aiming to strike a balance this fall. “I just wanna express again, not just my own, but just people’s lives around me and just celebrate it, but celebrate it in a way — not that we don’t have, ‘OK, sister, let me get you through this’ [songs or], ‘OK, here’s what I’m dealing with,’ ” she explained. “And that’s basically what that record is about. But I want to get it right , so my fans can be happy.” What do you expect to hear on Mary J. Blige’s new album? Share your thoughts below! Related Artists Mary J. Blige
