Simon Cowell Says He Won’t ‘Compare’ ‘X Factor’ To ‘American Idol’

Cowell tells MTV News, ‘The rules are off, basically,’ when it comes to his new show. By Jocelyn Vena Simon Cowell Photo: Vince Bucci/ Getty Images Simon Cowell helped bring back America’s love of a good reality-singing competition as one of the original judges on “American Idol.” Now, he’s preparing to bring another reality competition show, “X Factor,” Stateside, and he says there’s only one way to explain what it is. On Monday, MTV News caught up with Cowell, who said his “X Factor” won’t be like that other show. “Well, I would say that I’m not gonna compare it to ‘Idol,’ ” Cowell said. “It’s started from scratch. It’s a show that, first of all, has to be relevant; it has to appeal to younger viewers as well as older viewers. It should be representative of what’s happening on the charts at the moment, but in a nutshell you can be 12 years old, you can be 50 years old, you can be in a group and the rules are off, basically.” With auditions set to take place beginning March 27 in Los Angeles, fans may be wondering how Simon will make the show appealing to American audiences. “I’ve gone into it, first of all, that it is an American show and whatever happened on the U.K. last year is gone,” he said. “This is an American competition for American contestants. From a pride point of view, they want to make this the best show they’ve ever done.” The judges, Cowell noted , will have a lot to do with the show’s success. “I have to make sure we have a lot of Americans working on the show to begin with,” he said. “I’ve got to have people on the panel with me who can judge American talent because I’m 51 years old, I’m British and we’ve got people as young as 14 entering this competition. So I’ve got to make sure I’ve got people sitting alongside me who genuinely know what they’re talking about so that we don’t lose somebody in the audition process.” Are you eager to see what Simon does with “X Factor”? Lupe Fiasco’s Lasers Blasts To Top Of Billboard 200

Avril Lavigne’s long-awaited Goodbye Lullaby debuts at #4. By Gil Kaufman Lupe Fiasco Photo: Johnny Nunez/ WireImage Sometimes the hardest, bumpiest rides are the ones that get you to the sweetest destination. That’s the lesson Chicago MC Lupe Fiasco is basking in this week as he celebrates the #1 debut of his third album, Lasers. After a difficult, oft-delayed birth, the record will make its mark on the Billboard 200 next week when it takes over the top spot thanks to sales of more than 204,000, according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan. That’s more than enough to end the two-week #1 reign of British soul singer Adele , whose 21 drops a spot to #2 as sales dipped to 133,000, giving her an impressive three-week total of more than 653,000. There are plenty of other debuts in the top 10 as well, including the latest “Glee” cast recording, Glee: The Music, Volume 5 (#3, 90,000), Avril Lavigne’s long-awaited Goodbye Lullaby (#4, 87,000), R.E.M. ‘s Collapse Into Now (#5, 57,000) and country singer Sara Evans ‘ Stronger (#6, 55,000). The rest of the top 10: Mumford & Sons , Sigh No More (#7, 46,000), Marsha Ambrosius , Late Nights & Early Mornings (#8, 41,000), Justin Bieber , Never Say Never – The Remixes (#9, 40,000) and NOW 37 (#10, 33,000). Just outside the top 10, rapper Raekwon cooks up a #12 debut for his latest solo effort, Shaolin Vs. Wu-Tang (29,000), and “Tosh.0” comedian Daniel Tosh comes in at #28 with the CD of his comedy special, Happy Thoughts (15,000). Way down the line, heavily hyped English singer Ellie Goulding finally makes her American chart debut, sliding in at #129 with Lights (4,000). “American Idol” judge Jennifer Lopez continues to kill it on the iTunes singles chart, topping the tally with her comeback hit, “On the Floor,” followed by Katy Perry ‘s “E.T.,” Lady Gaga ‘s “Born This Way,” Britney Spears ‘ “Till the World Ends” and Rihanna ‘s “S&M.” A few fellas manage to break up the ladies’ club, with Cee Lo Green snagging the #6 position with “Forget You,” Ke$ha at #7 with “Blow,” Pink right behind with “F—in’ Perfect,” Dr. Dre and Eminem at #9 with “I Need a Doctor” and the cast of “Glee” rounding things out with “Landslide.” Lupe rules the iTunes albums chart as well, again besting #2 Adele, who’s in front of Lavigne, the “Glee” cast album, Mumford & Sons, R.E.M., Tosh, the Christian rock compilation Passion – Here for You, Evans and Ambrosius. Look for little change at the top next week, as new albums by Rise Against , Miranda Cosgrove and Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker hit the charts. Phil Collins Retires from Music Business

Following decades in the music business, Phil Collins has called it a career. The British artist says he suffers from hearing problems, a dislocated vertebra and nerve damage in his hands, all due to years and years of performing. “I’m not worried about not being able to play the drums again, I’m more worried about being able to cut a loaf of bread safely or building things for my kids,” the father of two tells FHM . Considering the state of the business, with singers such as Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift dominating the charts, Collins also doesn’t think he fits in any longer, saying: “I look at the MTV Music Awards and I think: ‘I can’t be in the same business as this.’ I don’t really belong to that world and I don’t think anyone’s going to miss me. I’m much happier just to write myself out of the script entirely.” But Collins will maintain at least some ties to pop culture: his daughter, Lily Collins, is dating Taylor Lautner.

Savoy Talk Tour Dates With Wiz Khalifa, Benny Benassi, More

Rising EDM trio tell MTV News upcoming shows will be a ‘visual escape,’ as their single ‘Get Static’ hits Beatport. By Adam Stewart, with additional reporting by Brian O’Toole Savoy’s Mike Kelly Photo: MTV News Savoy have quickly become a buzz-worthy act on the EDM scene, and you can expect to hear a lot more from them in the months to come. On Thursday, their single “Get Static,” a big synth-infused monster, is slated to hit Beatport. The dance-music trio — Ben Eberdt, Mike Kelly and Gray Smith — began making waves in 2009 with their hit “Automatic,” and their electro-rave-inspired swagger has since earned them a loyal (and growing) fanbase. MTV News recently met up with Savoy who told us how they met and teased their tour plans (expect lasers!). “We met at the University of Colorado in our freshman-year dorms and, ever since, we’ve been striving towards making dance music and working together as music producers,” Eberdt explained. “Mike lived next door from me, and I met Gray from seeing him walk around playing a mandolin. I went up and said, ‘Hey man, we should play some music together.’ We all went [to college] with the same idea that we wanted to meet somebody else to play music with or to make music with or at least have some artistic connection with.” Since their college days, Savoy have pumped out some of the most talked-about underground New York dance-music scene. From their Benny Benassi-esque electro destroyer “Life of the Party” to “Real People,” a delightfully-dark progressive house thumper, Savoy have demonstrated grade-A production ability and they make their inspirations clear — but with subtlety. “Acts like Swedish House Mafia and Deadmau5 are awesome,” said Gray. “We’re all really big fans; they’re definitely huge influences for us. It’s awesome to see them doing so much for the dance-music genre, really taking it to new levels and better venues than dance music has pretty much ever seen before.” The trio will hit this weekend’s Snowball Festival in Colorado, alongside Porter Robinson (a prot

Adele Calls 21’s U.S. Success ‘Magical’

British singer’s second album debuts at #1 on Billboard chart. By James Montgomery Adele Photo: MTV News On Wednesday (March 2), America fell in step with the rest of the record-buying world when it was announced that Adele’s jaw-dropping sophomore album, 21, would debut at #1 on the Billboard albums chart , selling nearly 352,000 copies and easily outpacing Justin Bieber for the top spot. Of course, a U.S. #1 was just the latest accomplishment for the 22-year-old Brit, who also saw the album top the charts in the U.K. (and most of Europe too), but as she told MTV News recently , she values Stateside success in a way we probably can’t begin to comprehend. “Oh, it’s magical being here. I didn’t think I’d ever release a record here,” she said. “It’s a big deal in England. There’s a massive thing, like, ‘Did you crack America?!?’ The biggest acts in England, no one has any idea who they are here. “For people to [buy my albums in the U.S.] is amazing,” she continued. “And America is so big, and there are so many … there’s, like, five other artists that do what I do, better than I do, and in England, there’s like two of you. So it’s so much harder to get your foot in the door, so when you do get your foot in the door here and want people to see you, it’s like, ‘What?’ ” A chart-topping bow here in the States is even more gratifying considering the fact that not only did Adele record most of 21 here, but she steeped her songs in a wide spectrum of American influences — everything from country and R&B to the lithe wordplay of rappers like Kanye West, Mos Def and Nas. Not to mention the fact that, unlike back home in the U.K., Adele is largely left alone by the pesky paparazzi. Though, given her recent success, we suspect all of that might change. “The tabloids really don’t care here. I got [photographed by the] paparazzi for the first time in New York this morning, and that’s never happened, not even when I was straight off the Grammys,” she laughed. “Whenever I’m in New York, I’m left alone. … It’s been very slow here so far.” Have you checked out Adele’s new album? Justin Bieber Lands Two Albums In Billboard Top Five

The feat marks the first time this accomplishment has been achieved since last year, when Bieber also had two albums in the top five. By Gil Kaufman Justin Bieber Photo: Gilbert Carrasquillo/ Getty Images Justin Bieber has become such a musical sales force that now the only competition left is, well, Justin Bieber. After landing the #1 album last week with his Never Say Never – The Remixes , Bieber had to settle for #2 this week to make room for Adele’s 21 . But the rush of attention on the now- 17-year-old pop star thanks to his big-screen debut in “Justin Bieber: Never Say Never” helped propel his nearly year-old My World 2.0 back into the top five at #5, a feat that Billboard Associate Director of Charts Keith Caulfield said was a “very big deal.” In fact, Bieber is the first artist to have two albums in the top five at the same time since he achieved the same feat nearly a year ago. The last time it happened was in March of 2010 when 2.0 debuted at #1 while the singer’s debut, My World, was at #5. Caulfield said that before that, it hadn’t happened since October 2004 when rapper Nelly’s simultaneous album release of Sweat and Suit both crashed the top five at #1 and #2. If you go back to the last artist to do it without releasing two new albums at the same time, you have to look to May 2003, when 50 Cent’s Get Rich or Die Tryin’ was at #5 and his The New Breed CD/DVD debuted at #2. “Any way you look at it, it’s unusual,” said Caulfield, noting that even with all their success on the charts lately, not even Lady Gaga or Taylor Swift have notched that achievement. “It helps that you have four Bieber albums to choose from on the charts right now.” Related Photos Justin Bieber Turns 17! Adele Says Writing 21 ‘Broke My Heart’

British singer’s second album hit stores in the U.S. on Tuesday. By James Montgomery Adele Photo: MTV News Adele’s jaw-dropping sophomore album, 21, officially hit stores in the States on Tuesday (February 22), having already topped the charts in her native U.K. (and most of Europe too). And while it might seem odd for her to be so excited about another release — especially since 21 has been out for more than a month worldwide — the 22-year-old songstress isn’t hiding the fact that she’s anxiously awaiting her first-week numbers here in the U.S. To hear her tell it, she never thought she’d get the opportunity to sell albums here at all. “Oh, it’s magical being here. I didn’t think I’d ever release a record here,” she laughed. “It’s a big deal in England. There’s a massive thing, like, ‘Did you crack America?!?’ The biggest acts in England, no one has any idea who they are here. … I’m not a radio artist here, I’m not on pop stations really, I have these songs that go everywhere. So it really is people are proper behind me here, because I sell records; I don’t sell singles. And that doesn’t happen anywhere.” And her (presumed) Stateside triumph would be even sweeter considering, during the promotional run for her last album, the Grammy-winning 19, she steeped herself in all things American. And a lot of those influences — country, R&B, bluegrass, jazz, plus a few you might not suspect — are all readily apparent on 21. “I was a proper sponge when I did my big bulk of American touring. I was on a tour bus, so I was literally driving across America; I wasn’t getting on planes or anything like that. I’d be in Baltimore and hear this amazing, crazy hip-hop, and then be in Atlanta, and then in Texas, Nashville and end up in California. [And] I loved it,” she said. “And that rubbed off on this record. I don’t think I’ve made an Americana-sounding record, but certainly the delivery of a lot of the blues and country and rockabilly artists, and hip-hop. Like, I’m totally fascinated with the way Kanye and Nas and Mos Def manipulate a word to make it rhyme and to make it really fascinating when it’s actually pretty mundane. Analyzing normal things, but making them electric, that’s definitely rubbed off on my delivery and my writing, the way I connect with my songs and channel them.” And while she’s channeled her love of American music into her new album (and a mysterious hip-hop collaboration that she can’t mention “just in case it doesn’t happen”), what resonates most with fans on both sides of the Atlantic is the unflinching honesty she displays throughout. Songs like “Rolling in the Deep,” “Set Fire to the Rain” and the shattering “Someone Like You” are very much about the death of her first, as she put it, “real relationship,” and that heartbreak not only provides the backbone to the album, but has connected with her fans in a way even she couldn’t have predicted. “It broke my heart when I wrote this record, so the fact that people are taking it to their hearts is like the best way to recover. ‘Cause I’m still not fully recovered. It’s going to take me 10 years to recover, I think, from the way I feel about my last relationship,” she said. “It was the biggest deal in my entire life to date. … He made me totally hungry. … He was older, he was successful in his own right, whereas my boyfriends before were my age and not really doing much. And he got me interested in film and literature and food and wine and traveling and politics and history, and those were things I was never, ever interested in. I was interested in going clubbing and getting drunk.” And so if (or, more likely, when) 21 tops the Billboard albums chart, Adele will celebrate in her own way. She’s gone through the heartbreak, she’s grown up, and she carries with her a truly tremendous new album. Though someone will probably have to tell her when her album is #1. Even though she’s anxiously waiting for those first-week numbers, she’s actually stopped paying attention. “I disconnected my Internet,” she laughed. “I have no idea what’s going on!” Will you be picking up Adele’s latest? Kim Sozzi Ready To Release Self-Titled Second Album

Dance hitmaker calls ‘Little Bird’ Annie Lennox cover ‘a standout track.’ By Adam Stewart Kim Sozzi Photo: MTV News She’s an original Jersey Shore girl. She didn’t need to GTL or puff-her-poof before taking the stage at the legendary D’Jais nightclub in Belmar, New Jersey. All she needed was great music and her loyal fans. Kim Sozzi has always seemed to have a knack for that true Jersey Shore vibe. Growing up in Long Island, New York, and getting her start in the club scene, Sozzi is one of dance music’s most-iconic vocalists. Through various projects, labels and collaborations, she has maintained her position as one of underground dance music’s most-sought-after hitmakers, and after two years, is set to release her second studio album, the self-titled Kim Sozzi . While no official release date has been set, Sozzi assured MTV News that the album is complete and ready to go. “It’s totally different from my dance [music] and my previous singles,” Sozzi said. “I wanted to do something a little more mainstream. Hopefully my dance fans are going to follow me over, but if not, I have plenty of classic Kim Sozzi songs on the album.” After releasing “Rated R,” the album’s first single, back in December, Sozzi is gearing up to release the second track, “Little Bird,” a cover of the Annie Lennox classic. “I love, love, love this record. It came out great,” Sozzi gushed. “The guys from Beatport actually did the production. They did a killer job. This is definitely going to be a standout track on the album … It’s totally a song for the fans.” Produced by former Beatport staffers Brad Roulier and Shawn Sabo, known as Manufactured Superstars, “Little Bird” shows Sozzi at her best. With her distinctly sexy swagger and stunningly soulful vocal prowess accompanied by clean and crisp production from the Denver duo, this little birdie seems geared to fly up the charts. Sozzi has been a magnet for producers since she burst onto the scene back in 2001 with the epic Sound Factory NYC anthem “Feelin’ Me,” produced by Hex Hector and Jonathan Peters. She was launched almost instantly on a path to chart success, becoming a go-to for dance producers and topping the Billboard dance chart several times. In 2004, she joined the production quintet Mynt, which pumped out classic dance smashes such as “How Did You Know?” “Stay” and “Still Not Sorry.” To the dismay of their fans, the group split up in 2006 amid what many speculated were creative differences. “It’s tough because when you’re working with producers, it’s a double-edged sword,” Sozzi explained. “It’s great because you have these built-in people working around the clock and playing and producing, but then you also have everyone wanting to be the star, so it’s definitely a bit tricky. “But luckily, since parting ways, we are all friends again, which is nice, but I always wanted to be a solo artist, so I’m happy we did it amicably. It sounds like a divorce, but it kind of was.” Rich “DJ Riddler” Pangilinan , a well-known DJ/producer and former Mynt member, shared a similar sentiment regarding the split, saying he’s also glad the past is behind them. “It’s no secret that there were some differences in opinions on that project and some feelings were hurt on both sides,” he said. “It took some time to mend those fences, however, we were friends before that project, and we stayed friends after. “If there was one thing that I regret about that project it is that we never really got to do another album. I think that with what we both know now, we could come up with something very special.” Whether or not a Mynt reunion would ever be in the cards, Sozzi is keeping her eyes and ears open, always seeking to make moves and pair up with the hottest names in dance music. “I would love to work with deadmau5, David Guetta. I’m a big fan of Kaskade; I’ve been trying actually to get Ryan to work on one of my tracks. There’s so many great people doing great music and great tracks that I would like to work with.” Are you awaiting the release of Kim Sozzi’s next album? Tell us below!

Janet Jackson Speaks On Struggles With Appearance And Relationship With Father Joe Jackson: “I Felt Very Unattractive”

Wow and this is coming from one of the most beautiful women in the industry pre and post plastic surgery: In an exclusive interview with TODAY’s Meredith Viera, Janet Jackson reveals that her struggles with her body image were once so severe, “I would literally bang my head up against the wall because I didn’t feel attractive. … There was a lot of pain in my life. But I did. I felt very unattractive,” Jackson said. The singer/actress writes about the incident in her new book “True You: A Journey to Finding and Loving Yourself,” saying that she’s better off now than when she was in her 20s, and “Rhythm Nation” was topping the charts. “I still have issues with it. I don’t bang my head up against the wall, but I still have those moments. And I think it’ll probably continue but at least I know how to deal with it now. And I’m in a much better space,” she told Viera. The issues Jackson had might stem back to how she was treated by her brothers, including Michael, who had nicknames for her like “Horse, pig, cow, slaughter-hog,” she said.” “It makes you laugh, it really does. It makes you laugh. I guess some people could say, ‘Oh that’s, you know, brothers and sisters joking, it’s all affection, it’s all, you know, it’s in a loving way.’ But not everybody can brush it off, and I was one of those,” she said. In the interview, Jackson also opens up about her father Joe, saying she wasn’t to ever call him dad. “He said, ‘I’m Joseph to you. You do not call me dad.’ That affects you as a kid … I know my father loves me. He just has a very, very different way of showing it.” Check out more of the interview on TODAY on Friday and on Dateline on Sunday, Feb. 13. Damn, we know siblings can be mean and hateful to each other when growing up, but slaughter-hog???? That’s taking name calling to a whole different level. Poor Janet. Source
