MTV News’ Best Albums Of 2010: The Readers React

MTV.com users sound off with their opinions on the list and their picks for the year’s top releases. By James Montgomery Some of James’ picks for the best albums of 2010 Photo: MTV News On Wednesday, when MTV News published my annual Best Albums of the Year list, I wrote that “2010 may very well have been the best year for music in a long, long time … to the point where making a list of the 20 best [albums] was darn near impossible.” I wasn’t kidding, either. In fact, I was so sure I had missed some really great albums that I asked my readers to sound off with their picks. And, boy, did they ever! Over the past 24 hours, I’ve gotten tons of responses from fans all across the world (most of them angry, of course), each wondering why their favorite artist didn’t make the cut or, if they did, why they weren’t #1. There were thinly veiled threats, at least one call for me to be fired, a whole lot of curse words and even some rather spirited debate between Eminem and Kanye fans over just whose album was better. Of course, mixed in with all that madness, MTV.com readers also managed to suggest some very worthy albums that I had missed, make compelling arguments and even paying me a compliment or two. So I’d like to think that my list was a success … because, at the very least, the response it garnered proved that, unlike any other year in recent memory, 2010 really was bursting with great music — music people obviously felt very strongly about. Needless to say, I was impressed. So in order to keep the conversation going, I’m re-publishing some of the best responses here. But don’t think the debate is over … if you still feel like your voice hasn’t been heard, sound off in the comments below. And then head over to our Newsroom blog, where you can vote for your favorite album of 2010 . Because, really, I could argue about this stuff all day. On to the comments! “Props to MTV for putting Kanye at number 1 and for putting Rick Ross on the list. Teflon Don was incredible and My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy was classic.” — Lila “This list fails. Recovery is a better hip hop album than My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. Sure, Kanye’s got the better beats, but Eminem has the better lyrics, flow and overall delivery than Kanye. That’s what hip hop is really about, sure you need good production, but lyricism is more impressive.” — Ryan “This list is perfect. Eminem’s album wasn’t that good and mainstream people need to stop believing that sales equates to quality. Kanye West put out the best album this year, hands down. MTV isn’t the only one putting it at the top of the charts and if you didn’t buy it, that only reflects your own ignorance and lack of taste.” — Moze’s Mother “Great list, I’m surprised that is made by MTV. I do not understand why people think that if an album sold more must be better than others, music is not about sales or popularity, it is about quality.” — Juan17x “I just want to say that MTV did a great job with this Top 20. And it’s great the indie groups like The National, Arcade Fire, Vampire Weekend, Beach House etc were recognized. Music these days [is] infused with synths, autotunes, and other forms of manipulation. Sometimes it’s nice to just listen to the bare-bone basics of guitars, drums, vocals, and the occasional piano or other instrument. And Sufjan Stevens is great too! It was interesting to see Linkin Park’s album up there, but it might really be like Radiohead’s Kid A. Perhaps by listening to the tracks more often then it would be more easy to understand.” — A.Pearl “I haven’t heard of 70 percent of these clowns … No Rihanna? No Drake? No Diddy or Nicki Minaj? Surely James Montgomery must be living under some kind of rock … a huge one. Eminem at 14? (way too low). [The] only thing I can live with is Kanye at number 1. But it’s not worth ignoring these other artists!” — Tom “I’m happy that Kanye’s number 1 (the album’s super dope), but what about Cee Lo’s The Lady Killer, Bruno Mars’ Doo-Wops & Hooligans and Kid Cudi’s Man on the Moon 2: The Legend of Mr. Rager? ” — Mendy “Yeah! Vampire Weekend is in the top 5! YES! Grrreat, Contra is totally amazing. Amazing job you guys!” — Diana “ROBYN SHOULD BE NUMBER ONE!” — Antoine “I cant believe Drake isn’t on this list.” — Kanye is the Best “[Deftones’] Diamond Eyes is definitely missing.” — Lumen “You forgot perhaps one of the biggest: 30 Seconds to Mars’ This Is War. … The single ‘Kings and Queens’ won [the] VMA [for] Best Rock Video as well as [the] EMA [for] Best Rock. Singles ‘Closer to the Edge,’ ‘This Is War,’ ‘Hurricane’ and ‘Kings and Queens’ have been in Billboard ‘s Top 10 Alternative and Rock categories as well as iTunes all over the world.” — Ana “Why isn’t How I Got Over by The Roots on this list? After all it is nominated for a Grammy. I also think that Eminem’s album was a lot better than Kanye West’s album. Distant Relatives by Nas & Damian Marley should also be on this list. I am a huge Linkin Park fan and I know their new album shouldn’t be on this list. Hands All Over by Maroon 5 should be somewhere on this list too.” — Facebook User “The editor of this article is a big fool and should be fired for putting up articles like this … No Drake, no Susan Boyle, no Taylor Swift, no Lady Gaga, no T.I. and these are the people making real good music that people can actually spend their money [on] and buy without regretting like I did [with] Kanye`s album. People actually think ‘Runaway’ is a great song just because of the lengthy video. That’s Dumb!” — Kenneth “Yo, Kenneth. Chill. We get it. You like music that sells well. You like ‘Glee’ soundtracks, Susan Boyle, Taylor Swift, Eminem, Backstreet Boys and Spice Girls records. That’s cool man … we happen to like music that appeals to us personally and possibly other intelligent, educated people with an ear for more progressive tastes. [It] just so happens, at the end of the year, journalists’ and critics’ lists are going to skew more towards our sensibilities than yours. Don’t worry though man, Susan Boyle is still going to sell 5 million records or whatever. The sun still rises in the morning.” — Yoprince Related Artists Kanye West Eminem Rick Ross (Hip-Hop)

Katy Perry Is MTV News’ #2 Woman Of The Year

Perry got married and ruled the charts in 2010. By Gil Kaufman Katy Perry Photo: Christopher Polk/AMA2010/Getty/DCP For most women, getting married to the man of their dreams would be enough to make a pretty good year. But when you’re a larger-than-life pop diva like Katy Perry , exchanging rings with comedic beau Russell Brand is just one of the bold headlines in a 365-day whirlwind that also included a successful tour and a trio of inescapable radio smashes that permanently smacked down any fears of a sophomore slump. (They’re more than just pretty faces, but you can still check out photos of our Men and Women of 2010!) After meeting at the 2009 VMAs , Perry and Brand started off 2010 with a bang by announcing their engagement , and frankly, things just got better and better for her from there. 2010 Highlights : An impressive engagement ring in hand, Perry set to work on her follow-up to her 2008 breakthrough, One of the Boys, working again with pop maestros Dr. Luke and Max Martin while turning in one of the most memorable guest-judge spots in the early audition rounds of what would turn out to be a very lackluster season of “American Idol.” There was the inevitable pregnancy rumor to bat away, and then it was off to work on the “Smurfs” movie and complete the album, even as wedding plans continued apace. By March, Perry was calling Brand a “bridezilla” for his fascination with all things marital, and news leaked that pal Rihanna was planning Perry’s bachelorette party. Like any proper pop star, Perry’s songs started leaking early in May, and when her first single, the Snoop Dogg-assisted “California Gurls,” finally dropped on May 7, fans had no idea how much a part of their flip-flop months that insanely catchy song would become. We got the first glimpse of six months of kaleidoscopic wigs and second-skin latex outfits at the MTV Movie Awards in June when she nearly melted the stage up with her “Gurls” performance , and the single made a historic rise to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart a few days later. When the sticky-sweet video debuted a week after that, well, it was clear Katy (and her whipped-cream-spurting bra) would be in a lot of late-night dreams for the rest of the year. July and August brought a false-starting lawsuit from the Beach Boys’ publisher over “Gurls,” another fetish-fantasy performance at the Teen Choice Awards and a triumphant chart debut in early September for Teenage Dream, which successfully bumped Eminem’s Recovery from the top of the charts. She turned heads again at the VMAs in September, played a sweet revenge show at her old high school and jetted to Las Vegas for a bachelorette party hosted by Rihanna by month’s end. And what would a year of ups be without a few bumps and controversies? In Katy’s case, it was her God-given assets that got her bumped from “Sesame Street,” when some parents complained in late September that her cleavage was NSFK (not safe for kindergarten). She got her revenge a short time later by giving an eyeful on a “Saturday Night Live” skit lampooning the flap and then flew to India in early October for her lavish wedding to Brand . The year was rounded out with the empowering message of the “Firework” video , a headline-grabbing appearance at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show , another boob-centric controversy, this time courtesy of the poster for the “VH1 Divas Salute the Troops,” and a place on Amazon.com’s year-end best-seller list. An exotic wedding to the man of your dreams, a red-hot career, mad love from your fans and a jet-setting lifestyle — what more could a girl ask for in one year? We’ll be revealing MTV News’ #1 Man and Woman of the Year on Friday. As always, we want to know what you think, so share your picks in the comments below! Eminem Is MTV News’ #2 Man Of The Year

Em raised the bar in 2010, thanks to a blockbuster album, hometown stadium shows and awards galore. By Gil Kaufman Eminem Photo: Kevin Mazur/EM/WireImage If there’s one thing we’ve learned by now about Eminem , it’s this: Never count him out. The 38-year-old Detroit legend seemed like he was in a career funk last year with the release of the long-awaited but unevenly dark Relapse, which chronicled his near-death experience with drug addiction and left some fans a bit worried about whether he’d finally run out of lyrical magic tricks. But what a difference a year makes. Near the end of 2009, we began getting excited about the promised, more “emotionally driven” sequel, Relapse 2. Twelve months and an entirely different album later, Eminem has the year’s best-selling release, handfuls of Grammy nominations and a fresh-eyed take on life that can only bode well for his next musical adventure. 2010 Highlights : As 2010 dawned, February brought Em joining Drake, Kanye West and Lil Wayne for a rousing, bleep-tastic performance of “Forever” at the Grammys with a tease of “Drop the World,” his hookup with Weezy that hit screens and iPods a month later, bringing together two of hip-hop’s biggest names for a rough-and-ready cut. He killed it again with his verse on B.o.B’s “Airplanes Pt. 2” and then the shocking news broke April 14 that “there is no Relapse 2. ” Fans were dumbstruck, but not for long, as the MC clarified later that day that he would be dropping a whole new album called Recovery on June 22. April’s release of the first single, “Not Afraid,” provided proof that Slim Shady would be taking a more positive, uplifting approach on his sixth major-label album, an encouraging note hammered home by lyrics on the song in which the rapper admitted that Relapse wasn’t his best work . In the run-up to the release, “Not Afraid” debuted at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, and there was more cause for celebration when Jay-Z and Marshall announced a slate of hometown stadium shows , which would represent one of the few live appearances the Detroit spitter would make in 2010. Then, despite leaking two weeks early, Recovery easily notched the highest debut of the year to date when it moved a gargantuan 741,000 copies in its first week, topping the charts for nearly two months on its way to selling more than 3 million copies to take the sales crown for 2010. After crushing it with “Not Afraid,” Em struck platinum again with an even bigger hit, his domestic-violence ballad “Love the Way You Lie,” a duet with Rihanna that featured an iconic video starring Megan Fox and Dominic Monaghan as the song’s protagonists. August brought a hefty eight VMA nominations and September the long-awaited shows with Jay, which found rap’s two biggest headliners torching the stage for thrilled fans in Detroit and NYC . In between the gigs, though, Shady found time to open up the VMAs with performances of “Not Afraid” and “Love the Way You Lie” with a surprise cameo from Rihanna on a night when he took home two Moonmen. By October, Em was talking about being in the lab with mentor Dr. Dre working on the latter’s long-awaited Detox album and topping MTV News’ Hottest MCs in the Game list . Eminem was also getting more shine for his duet with Nicki Minaj on “Roman’s Revenge” from her Pink Friday debut and another collabo with Rihanna on her track “Love the Way You Lie (Part II).” As 2010 came to a close, he could be heard on T.I.’s “That’s All She Wrote” and had locked down a “Saturday Night Live” appearance with Lil Wayne for December 18. He wasn’t done yet, as he led all artists with 10 Grammy nominations , landed at #9 on MTV News’ Top Songs of 2010 with “Love the Way You Lie,” took top spots on the album-sales chart on iTunes and Amazon.com and inked a deal to play a boxer in the “8 Mile” inspired “Southpaw.” Not bad, right? THG Presents: Our Favorite Songs of 2010

Below is THG’s most favoritest songs of 2010. These are tracks we can’t get out of our heads, and ones that stand out most as we reflect on the past year. Before we unveil the top ten, here are a handful of disclaimers: We did not say “best,” nor are we implying this speaks for everyone. It’s just one site’s take, and we encourage you to submit your own. Yes, we are aware Ke$ha, Miley and Justin Bieber do not appear. Rihanna and Cee-Lo Green both ended up on THG’s list … and near the top to boot. Who joined them among our top ten jams of ’10? Find out after the jump! 10. Taio Cruz, “Dynamite” You will likely forget Taio Cruz’s name by this time next year. If you even knew it to begin with. But the man throws his hands up in the air sometimes. That is all. 9. Robyn, “Dancing On My Own” For those who feel the need to dance and cry simultaneously. 8. Michael Jackson feat. Akon, “Hold My Hand” Posthumous, previously-unreleased tracks are bad, more often than not. This one somehow strikes us as worthy of Michael Jackson’s legacy and message. Plus, how can you not appreciate the video they put together to accompany it? Hold My Hand Full Video: Akon & Michael Jackson 7. Kanye West feat. Jay-Z & Nicki Minaj, “Monster” For all Kanye’s non-musical headline-making abilities, he delivered a “Monster” track on My Beautfiul Dark Twsted Fantasy . Jay-Z and Nicki Minaj are great on it, too. 6. Lady Gaga feat. Beyonc
