Why Is It So Hard For Women To Break Through The Pop Chart Ceiling?

See more here:

“Black women voices are automatically categorized as being part of R&B, and therefore get marked as outdated and irrelevant, even though many of them eschew traditional contemporary R&B. Labels don’t know how to maximize these artists’ value to all audiences, not just listeners who enjoy urban radio.”- Mosi Reeves (Journalist) 2017 has been an amazing year for the music lovers. With breakout artist such has Cardi B breaking into the Billboard 100, Taylor Swif t sold 1.2 million in the first week with her debut album Reputation , and new artist such as SZA, Zara Larrsson , and Kehlani even with breakout singles; these artists have not charted. There have been many reasons as to why women have not been charting as they usually do such as some of the female heavy hitters that we depend on to dominate the charts have been taking a break (ex: Beyonce , Adele , and Rihanna  with the exception with NERD’s single Lemon  ). According to Fader.com female big acts such as Katy Perry who has been chart-topping since the mid-2000s  has not been able to break the glass ceiling in the Billboard 100s despite her latest effort with her album Witness released in June made a much smaller dent that she has done in the past. There has been a lack of new women artist breaking through with chart-topping power. Ben Mawson from Tap Management which is the management team that is very hard to launch new female talent due to streaming in which one has to appeal to a global audience right away. Another factor that is stopping women from breaking the glass ceiling regarding topping the charts is a race. Women of color, especially in the genre of rap/ hip-hop, have a higher bar to prove regarding their commercial visibility. Furthermore, when black women embrace other genres that society is not used to (ex: Beyonce singing country with Daddy Lessons ) they are unfairly held back. Fader.com goes on to list variables that have stopped women for continually charing such as the negative aspect of streaming, artist priorities have moved away from charting, etc. Here are a few females that have had a successful 2017 thus far!   Stay up-to-date by following us on  Facebook ,  Twitter  and on  Instagram  at @hiphopdetroit.

Parched For Pigment Taylor Swift’s Splenda Sweetened “Lemonade” Counterfeit Has Biggest Fall In Chart History

Erika Goldring/FilmMagic Taylor Swift’s Single Takes Huge Fall From Radio’s Top 5 Taylor Swift’s song “Look What You Made Me Do” is making a steady fall from the charts, and her fans are doing whatever they can to spin this into a positive. If you’ll recall, when the song was initially released it reached number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, and was the only thing in the way of Cardi B making history with the reign of “Bodak Yellow.” Swift’s song was priced at 69 cents on iTunes in order to stay at the top, but Cardi fans rallied and got our Bronx Princess’ song to number one. “Bodak Yellow” is still number 2 on the charts–behind Post Malone’s “Rockstar,” but “Look What You Made Me Do” has dropped to number 10. That’s not the biggest drop for the song, either. Chart Data reported that on the radio charts, Swift’s single dropped from being number 5 last week to now being number 20, which is the biggest fall from the top 5 in the chart’s entire history. Taylor Swift's “Look What You Made Me Do” drops 5-20 on Radio Songs, recording the biggest fall from the top 5 in the chart's history. — chart data (@chartdata) October 23, 2017 After recording a cheaper version of Beyonce’s “Lemonade” video for the single and bringing up situations with Kanye after almost a decade, us logical folk were even more done with her isht than we have been in the past. With such stark falls from charts it rises questions of either fan engagement or possible foul play with early sales, but we won’t know how much longer we have to deal with Taylor until her album drops and possibly fades off like her singles. Possibly the funniest part of this fall is Swift’s fan accounts all trying to turn this chart data into something else, congratulating her on breaking another record. They also try to insult Beyonce and imply that the fall is her label’s fault for not advertising. Here’s How Iggy Azalea Went From Potential Star To Past Tense

The rest is here:

Source: Scott Legato / Getty Iggy Azalea ‘s career could be likened to a celestial comet: nice to look at, only comes around every years and if you blink, you could miss it. Back in  2010, when Nicki Minaj was starting her tenure as reigning queen of rap, all anyone could talk about was he Australian-bred rapper being the hottest thing to hit hip hop in a long time. The fact that she’s not American and White added to her appeal, but what lead to her demise? Jezebel recently did an article entitled “The Making and Unmaking of Iggy Azalea” and touched on important points in her career that were pivotal to her success. The article points out that Polow Da Don was interested in Iggy ever since he met her in Atlanta in 2010 when she was just dropping mixtapes. The producer said of his first encounter with Iggy, “She just looked exotic. She looked like a star. If she was in entertainment, I wanted to work with her. If she wasn’t, I wanted to talk to her, try to take her out on a date or something.” Source: Kevin Mazur/AMA2014 / Getty After bouncing around from mentor to mentor, who tried to make her go pop, Polow says, “I told her, ‘Nobody’s gonna buy you being hood.’” Due to their creative differences, Iggy and Polow parted ways — then she moved on to another Atlanta great, T.I. Before officially working with Grand Hustle, Iggy continued to grind her way to hit records, and finally landed one by the end of 2014. “Fancy” set the charts on fire and became 2015’s summer anthem. From there, she took her talents to features and hopped on tracks with everyone from Ariana Grande to Britney Spea r s . She was basically the pop world’s go to rapper at the time. Iggy was so popular that she even landed a modeling contract with Wilhelmina. Then, according to Jezebel, “Iggy became a punchline and went from being hailed as a white rap savior to, three years later, being a digital-era Vanilla Ice.” Her social media beefs with everyone from Azelia Banks to Q-Tip, plus her tumultuous relationship with Nick Young, started to overshadow the music. In a June interview with The Guardian, singer Halsey , who is also White, summarized Iggy’s career in a nutshell, saying “She had a complete disregard for Black culture. F***ing moron. I watched her career dissolve and it fascinated me.” Halsey isn’t the only one who noticed her disregard for the culture, hip hop as a whole was demanding for her to stop mocking the art of hip hop. Last year and 2017 were ice-cold years for Iggy professionally, but her personal life has overshadowed her music — hence the reason she posted more about her five-minute long relationship with French Montana   than she did her sophomore album. Iggy Azalea Would Totally Yes’ If French Montana Proposed She … : https://t.co/W5gpie9iX2 …. pic.twitter.com/4xa9BYemHz — BINGBING Cocktail (@BINGBING_CKTAIL) February 19, 2017 Bottom line, after seven years in the game, we still haven’t gotten to the heart of who Iggy Azalea is besides a rapper from Australia. Maybe 2018 will see the rebirth of Iggy Iggs on the music charts? Check out the full Jezebel article here . [ione_media_gallery src=”https://globalgrind.cassiuslife.com” id=”4015610″ overlay=”true”]
