Lil Wayne, A$AP Rocky Drop Best Mixtapes of 2011

Mixtape Daily also taps free selections from Wale, Young Jeezy, Future and more in our year-end awards. By Rob Markman Photo: MTV News Mixtape Daily: Best of 2011 Mixtapes are one of the key things that separate hip-hop from every other musical genre. While rock, country and pop fans have to wait until a record label releases an album from their favorite artist, rap fans have developed a unique connection with their fave MCs thanks to the availability of free mixtapes. In recent years, the free online releases — some of which are even made to sound like albums — increasingly help to raise an MC’s stock. 2011 brought on high-profile tapes from veterans like Lil Wayne and Young Jeezy, while newcomers like Future and A$AP Rocky used their tapes to establish their fanbases. While hundreds of tapes were released this year, Mixtape Daily breaks down the 10 Best of 2011 , in no particular order. 2 Chainz’s Codeine Cowboy Every good artist knows the art of reinvention and in 2011, no rapper rebranded himself as effectively as 2 Chainz. Once known as Tity Boy from the Atlanta group Playaz Circle, 2 Chainz cleaned up his act with a name change and a tape to go with it. Codeine Cowboy established the underground ATL veteran as a hitmaker thanks to his infectious money ode “Spend It.” Key Tracks : “Spend It,” “LaLa” (featuring Busta Rhymes) and “Kitchen” (featuring Young Jeezy and Pusha T) A$AP Rocky’s LiveLoveA$AP Before he even dropped his debut mixtape, Harlem MC A$AP Rocky inked a deal worth $3 million with Polo Ground/ RCA. When Rocky released LiveLoveA$AP on Halloween, the N.Y. newcomer with the Southern sensibility had proven that his breakouts “Purple Swag” and “Peso” were no flukes. Key Tracks : “Peso,” “Trilla” and “Brand New Guy” featuring Schoolboy Q Big K.R.I.T.’s Returnof4Eva Most artists use a combination of original tracks and freestyles over well-known beats on their mixtapes, but producer/MC Big K.R.I.T. has always separated himself from the pack by producing his own material. Following the success of 2010’s breakout K.R.I.T. Wuz Here, the 2011 XXL Freshman delivered once again with Returnof4Eva. Key Tracks : “Country Sh– (Remix)” (featuring Ludacris and Bun B), “Rotation” and “Dreamin’ ” Future’s True Story Sure, Future dropped a few mixtapes before True Story, but with catchy tracks like “Magic” and “Tony Montana,” how could fans not be checking for the “Racks”-featured rapper? Key Tracks : “Magic” and “Tony Montana” Lil Wayne’s Sorry 4 the Wait How considerate is Lil Wayne? After his label pushed back the release of his super-hyped Tha Carter IV, Weezy decided to give his fans a little something to make up for the delay. The aptly titled Sorry 4 the Wait found Tunechi reworking songs like Kreayshawn’s “Gucci Gucci” and Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep” over the course of 12 tracks. After a ton of mixtape downloads and double-platinum sales of Tha Carter IV, it’s clear that fans have accepted Wayne’s apology. Key Tracks : “Sure Thing (Freestyle),” “Gucci Gucci (Freestyle)” and “Tunechi’s Back” Ludacris’ 1.21 Gigawatts: Back to the First Time Ludacris is a rapper’s rapper. Don’t let his new line of Soul headphones, Conjure liquor or Hollywood movie roles fool you: Mr. Lova Lova takes MC’ing very seriously and it shows on 1.21 Gigawatts. Not only does Luda experiment with new flows on “Rich & Flexin’ ” and “Muthaf—a Can U Buy That,” he wages war against Drake and Big Sean on “Bada Boom.” Key Tracks: “Bada Boom,” “Shake and Fries” (featuring Gucci Mane) and “Rich & Flexin’ ” (featuring Waka Flocka Flame) Meek Mill’s Dreamchasers After making his mark on Maybach Music’s Self Made compilation with standout tracks like “Tupac Back,” and “Ima Boss,” many expected Meek Mill to drop his debut album right away. But rather than rush, Meek held fans over with his Dreamchasers tape. It’s quite the appetizer. Over the course of 19 tracks, the Philly MC gives fans a mix of everything: There are hits, some freestyles and even an intricate story rhyme on “Tony Story.” Well done. Key Tracks : “House Party” (featuring Young Chris), “Work” (featuring Rick Ross) and “Tony Story” Pusha T’s Fear of God As one-half of the Clipse, Push has always been a highly regarded lyrcist, but stepping out as a soloist can be tricky. On his first work without his brother Malice, Pusha Ton showed and proved, so much so that after Fear of God was released as a free mixtape on the Net, it was re-released at retail. Key Tracks : “My God,” “Feeling Myself” and “Raid” (featuring 50 Cent and Pharrell) Wale’s The Eleven One Eleven Theory After getting his Twitter following to 1 million, Wale dropped his The Eleven One Eleven Theory mixtape to hype up the release of his sophomore album Ambition. When the tape first dropped online, it crashed a few file-sharing sites. And once listeners were able to download and digest Wale’s work, it quickly became a fan favorite. Key Tracks : “Bait,” “Chain Music” and “Ambitious Girl 2″ Young Jeezy’s The Real Is Back Young Jeezy’s TM 103 (due this month) saw a series of delays, but that doesn’t mean that the Snowman wasn’t working. On his The Real Is Back mixtape, Jeezy squashed the beef with DJ Drama and collaborated on one of the year’s best. Through 21 tracks, Jeezy delivers his unique brand of trap music as only he can. Key Tracks :”Win Win,” “Rollin” (featuring Fabolous), “Run DMC” (featuring Freddie Gibbs) and “Ballin’ ” featuring Lil Wayne Think we missed a major mixtape? Kate Gosselin Runs Marathon, Mouth

She used to running after her eight children and used to chase Jon Gosselin around like a grating banshee, so it’s no surprise that Kate Gosselin finished a marathon Sunday. The reality mom, who bundled up on an unusually chilly night in Las Vegas, with a top that said “Finishing Is Winning,” ran it in just 4 hours, 59 minutes and 21 seconds. “I’m not one to do anything lightly,” Gosselin said prior to the race . “I either do it or I kill it. I guess this is considered killing it.” Does that include her marriage? Ohhhh … The 36-year-old Gosselin, who’s been a runner for three years, trained for the marathon on the roads near her Wernersville, Pa., home, often in below-freezing temps. And by finishing 26.2 miles in the Las Vegas Rock N’ Roll marathon, Kate Gosselin hopes to set an example for her kids besides exploiting them on reality TV for cash. “I am running because I want to show that with dedication and determination anything is possible,” she said. “I want them to remember the moment when their mom completed a marathon, knowing that nothing should stop them from attaining their goals.” That includes milking face lift rumors . Never let the truth stand in the way! [Photo: WENN.com]

‘Dark Knight Rises’ And More: 20 Best Trailers Of 2011

Teasers for ‘Hunger Games’ and ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2′ also left us hungry for more. By Eric Ditzian Christian Bale in “The Dark Knight Rises” Photo: Warner Bros. Time, like the theatrical run of “Your Highness,” has disappeared quickly this year. It’s hard to believe it was almost 12 months ago that we were settling into our seats to check out Nicolas Cage’s “Season of the Witch.” That didn’t work out so well. And so, as the MTV Movies team begins our look back at the cinematic year that was 2011, we’re reminded that time is precious. We don’t have much of it; we must use it wisely. That’s why we’re beginning our series of best-of stories with movie trailers — those neat little packages of footage that let us know in a few minutes’ time whether the full movie is going to be worth it. Picking our 20 favorite trailers was a tough call; just look at the ones that didn’t make it, like “The Avengers,” “The Amazing Spider-Man,” “Captain America: The First Avenger” and “Breaking Dawn – Part 1.” In the end, though, we selected the trailers that truly stuck with us — some since the early days of the year and some newer ones that are sure to haunt us into next year. Read on for our picks for the 20 best movie trailers of 2011. 20. “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy” The trailer teases everything the movie delivers — a slowly building whodunit of a plot, an ominous score, period details so depressingly ’70s-era British that the footage should come with a voucher for lithium — while at the same time succeeding in one area where the movie falters: It’s not pull-your-hair-out, whisper-to-the-person-next-to-you, throw-your-hands-up-in-defeat confusing. 19. “The Muppets” An unlikely companion piece to the “Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” teaser listed below, this “Muppets” trailer — one in a long line of pop-culture mash-ups — had the lovable felt creatures laser-beaming one message to viewers: Our movie may be rated PG, but we swear you’ll totally dig it. And hey, if you want to get stoned in the parking lot beforehand, that’s fine, dude. 18. “Battleship” The “Battleship” trailer got a lot of crap when it dropped in July — was this just “Blue Crush” meets “Armageddon,” with neither the former’s sugary, shameless sex factor nor the latter’s Bruce Willis? Instead let us float another way of viewing it: as an utterly wacky, probably nonsensical yet potentially blockbustering summer movie for a “Transformers”-less 2012. 17. “Martha Marcy May Marlene” The footage builds and builds its claustrophobic tension, finally giving way to John Hawkes’ homespun singer/songwriter tuneage, which somehow still doesn’t allow you any catharsis, any chance just to catch your breath: All is not well in Elizabeth Olsen’s world. And it’s simply addicting to watch. 16. “The Woman in Black” The tagline could have been, “Abandon hope, all ye Muggles who enter here.” The first full trailer for Daniel Radcliffe’s first post-“Harry Potter” film was simple and creepy and effective — and unlike anything the boy wizard has ever encountered. 15. “Red Tails” The second trailer starts off a little hokey, but it soon morphs into a shoot-’em-up dogfight between the Tuskegee Airmen and the Axis powers. Every piece of American history should come wrapped in such fiery pop-culture packaging. 14. “Devil’s Double” Torture, guns, chicks in bikinis, Dominic Cooper doing double duty as wide-eyed innocent and psychotic tyrant — what else can one ask for in a trailer? 13. “Super 8” While our favorite “Super 8” trailer dropped in 2010, the one J.J. Abrams unleashed this past March — with its classic movie-monster intrigue and Spielbergian patina — was still pretty kick-ass. If only the film itself had lived up to the potential of these early looks. 12. “Drive” In a word: cool. In a few more: awesome score, awesome car chases, awesome hints at violence, awesome performance by Ryan Gosling. Mainly, though: cool as sh–. 11. “John Carter” After checking out this trailer , we’d gladly jet off to Mars and battle a few of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ baddies if it meant catching an early screening of this sci-fi epic. 10. “American Reunion” We didn’t realize we actually missed Jim and his randy pals until we glimpsed the goofball and his flute-loving wife separately, secretly pleasuring themselves to R. Kelly’s “Bump N’ Grind.” 9. “Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance” Nicolas Cage pees fire. He f—ing pees fire and says it feels awesome. When do tickets go on sale? 8. “Like Crazy” One of the best movies at Sundance became the hands-down finest trailer for a romantic drama in 2011, capturing all the beauty and sadness and magic that echoes between Anton Yelchin and Felicity Jones in the film. 7. “Rise of the Apes” Anyone mocking the idea of bringing back those damn dirty apes with James Franco in tow was roundly silenced when the teaser dropped in April and we peeped Andy Serkis’ Caesar and his ilk unleashing simian fury on San Francisco. 6. “X-Men First Class” Was it the sizzling score? The historical weight imbued by JFK’s voice-over? The quick looks at all those mutants? Every single frame in which Michael Fassbender was onscreen? It was all of it and more that made this “X-Men” trailer one of the most epic of the year. 5. “The Hunger Games” After the most teaser-y of teaser trailers debuted at the MTV Video Music Awards , Lionsgate came through with a ton of footage in November: districts, tributes, games-makers, the Hunger Games arena and three teens looking to swipe the throne of tween obsession-dom from Edward, Bella and Jacob. 4. “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” The feel-bad movie of Christmas gave us zero dialogue, oodles of fresh looks without anything so troublesome as context getting in the way, and Trent Reznor and Karen O’s cover of “Immigrant Song.” Oh, and chills: it gave us chills. 3. “Snow White and the Huntsman” Our expectations were not high. So let us apologize to Kristen Stewart and all who are involved with this adaptation: Well done, folks! Sweeping in scale and containing some truly creative visual effects (huge crows splintering into hundreds of smaller crows, an anthropomorphic golden mirror), the trailer already would have been a 2011 highlight on its own merits. But when the silly trailer for “Mirror, Mirror,” a competing Snow White flick, dropped days later, we had to revise our expectations for “Huntsman”: This is how you adapt a centuries-old fairy tale for the 21st-century multiplex. 2. “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2” Sure, we whooped it up to “Woman in Black.” But the final “Deathly Hallows, Part 2” trailer? That sucker was not only the best “Deathly Hallows” trailer, it was arguably the best trailer of the entire franchise. 1. “The Dark Knight Rises” This teaser should be encased in glass and studied at every studio in Hollywood as the perfect way to build excitement, deliver what core fans wants and yet not give away the whole shebang — and leave everyone dying to see more, more, more. There is simply no question: This was the best trailer of 2011, and we have a feeling it’s teasing what will be the best movie of 2012. On Wednesday, November 23rd my friend and I woke up at 3am to…

On Wednesday, November 23rd my friend and I woke up at 3am to get ready to go to NYC for the Today Show. We caught a 5am train and got there at 5:50am. When we got to the Today Show it was packed, so we quickly went to The View. We were the 2nd ones there to wait for Justin. More and more people started to come and we kept waiting. People started to arrive like the people on The View and they were saying, “Justin’s coming! Justin’s coming!”, along with random people from DWTS. As we were waiting, a girl recognized me from this website where I had my first Bieber experience last year! ( Read here ) My mom over heard her telling her mom and when my mom told her I was her daughter, the girl asked her to bring her over to me. I was in like complete shock that someone knew it was me since I looked so different from then. After that, 6 SUV’s pulled in. The first one was random people we didn’t know, the second was Usher, the third was Scooter and Carin, the 4th was Justin and Pattie, and the last two were the crew members. All of us were so mad cause they didn’t roll down their windows, they just waved and smiled so we were like what the hell! After that, Rob Kardashian pulled in and that made us all scream. All of us got on Twitter and started tweeting them about how sad we were and Scrappy tweeted, “Apparently all the beliebers are outside. Will try and come say hi after we perform. ” That just got us all excited. We waited until 11:30am and then we heard screams and when we looked, Justin and Kenny were walking towards us. The side I was on screamed louder then the over side, so Justin came over to us first and he was smiling so big! My friend and I called out to him and he held our hands, smiled at us then winked . I looked over at Kenny and he was looking around smiling and kinda looked lost in his own world. I was like “Kenny!” and he looked at me and waved. Then he went to the other side and then after a couple minutes came back over to us, then left. As they were pulling out, we all thought it would be funny to just chase after them so we ran a block and the people I met, my friend, and I just stopped while the others kept going. It was worth the wait even though Justin didn’t take pictures with people. I met so many new people and had a great time. -@ImKristieBieber  View post: On Wednesday, November 23rd my friend and I woke up at 3am to…

Nicki Minaj Has ‘Crazy Ideas,’ David Guetta Says

‘It’s very exciting,’ working with MC, Guetta tells MTV News on American Music Awards red carpet. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Jim Cantiello Nicki Minaj performs at the AMAs on Sunday Photo: Kevork Djansezian/Getty Images On Sunday night, Nicki Minaj joined forces with David Guetta for a sexy, amped up performance of their track “Turn Me On” at the American Music Awards . The two kicked off a night that would lead to two wins for the fierce MC, who nabbed trophies for Favorite Rap/Hip-Hop Artist and Favorite Rap/Hip-Hop Album for Pink Friday. Before Guetta hit the stage, he spoke to MTV News on the red carpet, revealing that his collabo with Minaj would have fans seeing a whole new side of the MC. “To tell you the truth, the fact that I’m performing this record for the first time … I want to see the reaction that people are gonna have because they are going to hear Nicki like they’ve never heard her before,” he explained of working with Minaj, who also appears on his song “Where Them Girls At.” “I’m really happy today because I’m having a #1 record with Usher [for] ‘Without You,’ which is amazing [and] my first #1 as an artist in the U.S. And presenting this also, I really can’t wait to get the reaction from the American audience when they’re gonna see her sing like this because she is killing it.” In the lead-up to the performance, Guetta said that Minaj was already bringing fire to the table. “She always comes with the crazy ideas,” he said. “So it’s very exciting.” With the performance under their belts, the two now have plans to shoot a video for the track, which appears on Guetta’s album Nothing but the Beat. Guetta and Minaj teased the video plans on Twitter, hours after the AMAs wrapped up. “We are shooting our video with @NICKIMINAJ tmw. It’s gonna be sick! #nbtb #TurnMeOn,” Guetta wrote. “Can’t wait David! Love u!!!” she tweeted in response.
