Pull Out For What? Chicago Transit Authority Confirms Plans To Put Subway Rats On Birth Control

via Huffington Post The nation’s “rattiest city” is putting subway rodents on birth control. Egg loss and testicle problems await Chicago’s rat population once the Chicago Transit Authority rolls out a rodent-specific birth control program next year, RedEye Chicago reports. The CTA’s new pilot program will use a semi-liquid bait that eventually makes rats infertile when ingested multiple times. Arizona-based rodent control company SenesTech, which makes the bait, says on its website that the non-lethal product is “specifically formulated for rats and does not affect other animal species or humans.” The bait, which reportedly tastes like egg cream, can decrease a rat’s litter size “as early as 2 weeks after ingestion,” according to the company. RedEye reports that rats usually become sterile within eight to 12 weeks of exposure. Last year, SenesTech’s bait was tested in several Manhattan subway stations and Grand Central Terminal as part of a study funded by the National Institutes of Health. Biologist Loretta Mayer, CEO of SenesTech, told The Wall Street Journal that the results of the study were “extremely compelling” — roughly half of the rats in the small-scale study took the bait, leading to a 43 percent decline in the rat population of tested facilities. “It could cut it down to the point where New Yorkers won’t see rats,” Mayer said. CTA spokeswoman Catherine Hosinski told The Huffington Post via email that the agency does not actually have a rodent problem, but that the pilot program is a way of staying ahead of the pests. “[I]f there are ways we can do even better, we want to look at them,” Hosinski explained. “This pilot is simply the latest measure we’re looking to test in our ongoing, pro-active efforts to protect health and safety of customers and employees.” Chicago has turned to alternative rat abatement strategies before, including a “Cats At Work” program in which feral cats from a local Humane Society are used to curb the rat population.

Rita Ora’s KISS FM’s Annual Jingle Ball

Here’s Rita Ora at 103.5 KISS FM’s annual Jingle Ball in Chicago putting on exactly the type of great show we’ve come to expect from the busty British pop star. And just to be clear, I’m referring to her solid cleavage, not her singing. I’ve still never heard a single one of Rita’s songs and I don’t see that changing any time soon. Unless the Jingle Ball tour comes through my mom’s basement next. Hmm, that’s actually a pretty good idea. I’ve always wanted to see Rita’s cleavage show in-person. Photos: WENN.com

Gone Too Soon: Chicago Teen Dies Trying To Protect His Identical Twin Brother

This is so sad … A weekend armed robbery claimed the life of a 15-year-old Chicago teen who was walking to his high school to play basketball with his twin brother. Via NY Daily News reports : Demario and Demarcio Bailey were walking to an Englewood High School basketball game when four robbers ambushed the 15-year-old twins on a street corner Saturday afternoon. “Get off my brother,” Demario cried out as the young men shook up their pockets and demanded their jackets, according to the Chicago Tribune. As the Bailey boys struggled with the attackers, one suspect pulled out a gun and fired. Three days shy of their 16th birthday, one gunshot wound to the chest killed Demario. The shot sent the accomplices and Demarcio running. He looked back only to see his brother’s body lying face down under a viaduct. “He didn’t see anybody other than Demario on the ground,” his grandmother, Bernice Fitzpatrick, 62, told the Tribune, describing them both as honorable boys. “They were raised to stick together.” Chicago cops have taken several suspects into custody including a 17-year-old now charged with murder, robbery and attempted robbery with a firearm. The shooting happened just after their family gave the teen boys permission to be out on their own together more often. The boy’s death sparked a dramatic statement from Johnson College Prep, where Demaro attended school, which called for martial law to handle the tragic shooting. “I know I speak for every educator who continuously deals with this type of tragedy in saying we are sick and tired of being sick and tired. The apologies are not enough, and after all the fanfare is over, someone still has to put their baby in the ground,” Principal Garland Thomas-McDavid wrote. “I believe I speak for every mother who lives on the South Side of this city in saying we don’t mind if it takes (martial) law to get this in order. Demario did not deserve to die three days from his 16th birthday.” The Bailey’s mother collapsed at the scene after Demario’s body was taken away. According to family members, she had sheltered the boys for most of their lives, driving them to most places but as their 16th birthday approached she lifted began to allow them more freedom. Demario would have been 16th on Tuesday. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Bailey family. R.I.P. Demario DemarioBaileyMemorialFund

Chicago Fire Season 3 Episode 10 Recap: Naughty or Nice?

Following last week’s emotional moment between Dawson and Mills,  Chicago Fire Season 3 Episode 10  featured a lot of tension between Casey and fiancee, including a drunken night out in the city. Dawson tried to apologize for her “stupid bar talk,” but Casey didn’t think confiding in a former lover about ongoing troubles at home is something that can be easily dismissed. Watch Chicago Fire Season 3 Episode 10 Online This leads Casey to go drinking (A LOT!) with Severide and ending up on a random woman’s couch. Did he engage in some naughty behavior? He’s unsure, but Casey makes amends with Dawson nonetheless, saying he acted like a “jerk” during their fight. Casey later learns that Severide actually slept with the random woman and Casey simply passed out in the living room. Still, when this blonde showed up at the firehouse with Casey’s phone, he and Dawson end up in a screaming match. Says Casey, before Dawson asks for permission to go home and ends up crying all by herself: “Maybe this whole thing is too big for us. I’m trying to be a lieutenant and your fiancé, and you can’t respect either one.” Elsewhere during an emotional fall finale… Mills and Brett vanish during a call after a strange black car appears at the location. Casey and the rest of the crew track down the abandoned ambulance and an injured man, yet find no sign of the paramedics. Clearly, Anthony staged this incident as payback against Mills for his son’s death… right? Donna delivers Boden’s baby in the middle of a traffic jam, only for the newborn to go into respiratory failure. Molly’s II makes it first ride when the truck crashes and burns into a nativity display at a Christmas festival. OOPS! But some good came out of the cursed vehicle, as Hermann donated it to a soup kitchen. And that’s where we end things for Chicago Fire in 2014. What did you think of the latest installment? Remember that you can always watch Chicago Fire online via TV Fanatic if you need to catch up during the hiatus.
