And to this list we can now add Polar Vortex, as areas across the Midwest and East Coast are becoming all too familiar with this frigid weather phenomenon. Polar Vortex: What Is It? A Polar Vortex is a whirlpool of freezing air and it descend upon various parts of the country today. Those in Illinois, Michigan and Wisconsin are experiencing subzero temperatures and more than a foot of snow. They are being encouraged to remain inside. “It’s just a dangerous cold,” National Weather Service meteorologist Butch Dye says, referring to places such as Fargo, North Dakota, where the forecast is for 32 degrees below zero. Frostbite and hypothermia often set in quickly at 15 to 30 below zero. The weather is wreaking havoc on travel, as well, with thousands of flights canceled yesterday through Chicago, St. Louis and Indianapolis. Attractions such as the St. Louis Art Museum and St. Louis Zoo have been closed indefinitely, while the Indiana Supreme Court is closed and even southern states are bracing for record-low temperatures. There are endless snow days around the country, but let’s hope those happy kids are bundled up to the fullest extend while they sled and play around. It’s seriously dangerous out there.

According to NY Daily News reports : Kelly Rhodes, 49, faces up to 15 years in prison after she left the body of Mary Gertrude Grenia, 89, wrapped in blankets outside of a Port Huron Township Goodwill store, the Times Herald reported. Prosecutors don’t believe Rhodes killed the woman, but said she may have neglected to care for her elderly mother, leading to her death. “I love her and miss her more than I ever could imagine,” Rhodes, originally from Salem, Ore., told the court during sentencing on Friday. The cold-hearted daughter displayed a “callousness that is frankly hard to fathom,” prosecutor Mona Armstrong said, when Rhodes dumped the body beside a Dumpster on March 12. The shocking crime was captured on surveillance video. “I understand I need to be punished for my poor decisions that were not sensible or logical at all,” Rhodes told the newspaper before her sentencing. The uncaring daughter reportedly took her sick and elderly mother out of a nursing home three years ago, but had fallen on hard times financially. The court didn’t accept the excuse and found her guilty of manslaughter, fourth-degree vulnerable adult abuse and removing a dead body without permission of a medical examiner. Grenia had heart and lung disease, and an autopsy showed no signs of trauma. Prosecutors believe Grenia died in her daughter’s truck before her corpse was dumped and left behind. “The bottom line is, (Grenia) was not provided that simple dignity she was entitled to at her age and after raising this particular defendant,” Armstrong said, the newspaper reported. We’re told the singer — who’s a vegetarian — was admitted early this morning. Ke$ha tells TMZ, “I’m a crusader for being yourself and loving yourself, but I’ve found it hard to practice. Jennifer Hudson has made it appareny that the best occupation out there is her assistant, a fact Walter Williams discovered on Tuesday when the former American Idol finalist and Academy Award winner bought Williams a house. Yes, a HOUSE. In the following clip, posted by Hudson, we see Williams react to this gift by dropping the paperwork on the ground and screaming. Over and over and over and over… Jennifer Hudson Gives Assistant a House Hudson and Williams have been friends since elementary school. But Hudson is also all about being awesome to those she scarcely knows. She may help turn her childhood home in Englewood, Illinois into a women’s shelter. “We still own the home and I would like to turn it into a shelter for women as soon as possible or by my mother’s birthday, which is November 7,” the former American Idol contestant’s sister told DNAinfo Chicago in August. “At least that is what I would like to see the house used for.” No word yet on the status of this project. But even the mere thought is an impressive one.

A Chicago story about life instead of death … 9-Year-Old Chicago Girl Delivers Her Baby Sister When Mom Goes Into Labor Via ABCNews Alyssa Meza is not even 10, but she has proved to her mother that she can handle a crisis. The 9-year-old has at least won the unofficial title of “Best Older Sister” this week when she delivered her baby sister after her mother went into labor. “She said she felt the baby coming out, and I told her to push the baby out and I’ll catch the baby,” Alyssa told ABC Chicago station WLS-TV of helping her mother through labor. “She got scared, and I caught the baby, grabbed the towel and wrapped her around.” Alyssa also unraveled the umbilical cord wrapped around her sister’s neck, an important step she said she learned about after watching a medical TV show. “I had to unwrap it a little, and I ran next door to grab my neighbor because the baby was a little purple,” she told WLS-TV. Both Alyssa’s mother, Monique Meza, and the baby were taken to the hospital after a neighbor called 911. Both mother and baby returned home on New Year’s Day. Young Alyssa says she has aspirations to become a paramedic one day, says her mother: “I expected it from her, but not as much maturity that she has shown me, at her age, very mature,” Monique Meza told WLS-TV. “I know she has a bright future ahead of her.” We guess this story will go over well with the college admissions committees. The Internet. It’s can do more than help you find Kate Upon nude photos or crazy Tila Tequila videos . It can help a little girl reunite with her lost stuffed animal in Great Britain. Allow us to explain: Last Friday, a woman named Lauren Bishop Vranch discovered a stuffed lion sitting all by his lonesome during a train ride at Kings Cross. Upon handing it over to a train employee, Lauren was told the item would just be left someplace random… and she was having none of that! So Lauren took the lion with her to Newcastle and posted a photo of him on Twitter, including along with it a caption that read: “Found this well loved little dude on an East Coast train at Kings Cross – let’s find the owner, Twitter!” She then Tweeted various other pictures of the lion in various locales, from a pub to a hotel room to a riverside bench. Seriously, the little fake guy enjoyed quite the weekend! Eventually – incredibly! – the father of the girl who lost the lion came across this Spotted: On The Train’s Facebook page and responded, saying his child’s name is Phoebe, the lion’s name is Roar and adding: “WOW the power of the internet and kind folk – that’s my daughter Phoebes bear – she has been in tears all weekend and I’ve just shown her the picture and she is over the moon. Thank you all so much!” And here’s a photo of Phoebe and Roar reunited. Pretty awesome, huh?
