Kanye, Big Sean, Pusha T and 2 Chainz unite on new G.O.O.D. Music single. By Rob Markman Hit-Boy Photo: MTV News Two new Kanye West songs in just two days — now that’s what we call a G.O.O.D. week. A day after dropping “Theraflu,” the Louis Vuitton Don dropped a second single, this time with his G.O.O.D. Music cohorts on Thursday night. “Mercy” not only features rhymes from Yeezy, but Big Sean , Pusha T and 2 Chainz as well. The track, which premiered on Chicago’s WGCI, was released on iTunes at midnight in conjunction with the religious holiday Good Friday. Big Sean and Pusha T set things off, while Yeezy and 2 Chainz bring up the rear lyrically. For 2 Chainz, who recently signed to Def Jam Records, being featured on such a high-profile track has further validated his success of late. “I’m excited about it,” 2 Chainz said on Thursday during a Def Jam-orchestrated press conference call. Though he isn’t signed to West, 2 Chainz said he’s done so much work with Yeezy that he forgot what his “Mercy” verse sounded like. “I’ve done a lot of work with ‘Ye for, like, a year now, and it was one of those songs where I called him and I told him, ‘Man, play my verse over the phone because I don’t remember,’ ” he said. “That’s a good look to add to the r
In random news, American Reunion star Jason Biggs stripped down in the middle of a news building in an apparent parody of Jason Russell’s naked meltdown . Jason’s friends at the Invisible Children organization, which produced the viral phenomenon Kony 2012 video, were definitely NOT amused by Biggs’ antics. Then again, they’re responding probably the best way they can. “Who’s Jason Biggs? Was he famous once or something?” asked a rep in response. Ouch. Anyway, while Russell remains hospitalized for the serious psychotic episode, here’s Biggs doing his naked thing at Chicago’s WGN, for reasons unknown: Jason Biggs Mocks Kony 2012 Guy
Chart-topping British boy band will kick off tour on May 24 in Fairfax, Virginia. By Jocelyn Vena One Direction Photo: Redferns With their record-breaking debut album, Up All Night, topping the charts , One Direction plan to hit the road for their first-ever headlining tour in the States. The U.K. boy band will kick off the trek May 24 in Fairfax, Virginia, as part of a North American tour set to wrap up on July 1 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, with stops along the way in cities like Chicago, New York, Atlanta and Las Vegas. News of the guys’ tour comes as Up All Night made One Direction the first British group to have a debut album at #1 on the Billboard 200 on Wednesday (March 21). U.S. hysteria for the guys has been over-the-top, with hard-core fans wildly greeting them at stops all over the country. But one of the 1D fellas, Niall Horan, explained to MTV News that the band’s truly appreciative of all the fan love . “No way were we expecting it to do anything like that,” he said of enthusiasm for the album in the States. “We haven’t spent that much time out here and obviously not a lot of people know us, but the power of our fans, they never seem to stop amazing us. They’re absolutely brilliant and they’ve bought the album in great numbers.” Want the scoop on One Direction’s dapper boy-band style? Head over to MTV Style! This won’t be the guys’ first tour in America, though. Earlier this year One Direction toured with Big Time Rush, and things got pretty crazy, according to Horan. “Since we’ve been here, we did Radio City [Music Hall in New York] with Big Time Rush, and when we were leaving the venue, there was a lot of people waiting outside for us and it was like the movies,” he recalled. “We were trying to drive away. [Fans] were running through traffic. It was literally like something you’d see in a movie.” It doesn’t seem the hysteria is going to die down anytime soon. Before 1D even hit the road in May, they’ll perform at the Kids’ Choice Awards on March 31, and then they’ll take the “Saturday Night Live” stage a week later, on April 7. And all this buzz around the five Brits has fans wondering if they might be getting their own show on Nickelodeon . But Horan said that’s not the case, for now at least. “We’ve just been doing stuff with Nickelodeon. They’ve been brilliant to us; they’ve been really good to us. [But] there’s no sign of a TV show,” he said. “We haven’t heard anything. We’re obviously doing the Kids’ Choice and stuff, but there’s no deal been done or anything [for a show]. They’re just kind of helping us out, I suppose.” One Direction tour dates so far, according to band’s record label:
It really pays to have friends in high places. Just ask President Obama , who raised several million dollars during campaign stops in Illinois and Georgia Friday with help from celebrity friends Oprah and Tyler Perry. President Barack Obama, turning full attention to his re-election campaign, aimed to raise more than $5 million today with fundraisers in his adopted hometown of Chicago and then Atlanta, where Oprah Winfrey joined with other wealthy donors. Obama arrived in Chicago as two of the Republicans who want to challenge him in November, Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum, also had Illinois campaign events before the state’s March 20 presidential primary. His stops included dinner for about 40 people, including Winfrey, at the home of actor and film producer Tyler Perry. There, Obama said of his presidency: “This is not a three-year project. This is an eight-year project,” prompting applause. The first of Obama’s five stops was at the Palmer House Hilton Hotel in Chicago, where about 600 people paid $2,500 a piece to watch the campaign film and listen to the president. Without naming his would-be opponents, Obama said the state has “guests this week,” referring to the campaigning leading up to the primary. “Welcome to the Land of Lincoln,” Obama said. Taking an indirect dig at his rivals, he said that he hoped “maybe some Lincoln will rub off on them while they are here,” and told the audience to prepare for “an avalanche of attack ads.” The state’s Republican Party chairman, Pat Brady, criticized Obama for concentrating on his campaign. “After three years of failed policies, broken promises and a seemingly endless supply of empty rhetoric, it is abundantly clear that President Obama has given up on governing and is only concerned about campaigning to save his own job,” Brady said in an e-mailed statement. After the speech, the president held a closed discussion with about 60 supporters who donated at least $10,000 each. In Atlanta, Obama began his fundraising at a private residence where 75 people paid $10,000 each to attend. He then greeted 1,000 supporters at Perry’s studios, an event that included a musical performance by Cee Lo Green. Most of the tickets started at $500 with a smaller number sold at $250, according to the campaign. At the first Atlanta stop, Obama jabbed at the Republicans. “Their basic vision is, ‘You know what? I’ve got mine,’” he said. “And that’s why the other side really doesn’t talk about issues.” Obama capped the day at Perry’s house. Tickets to that cost $35,800. Perry gave $30,400 on May 30, 2009, to the Democratic National Committee and $4,600 Sept. 12, 2007, to Obama’s first presidential campaign, according to the nonpartisan Center for Responsive Politics, which tracks contributions. The money raised today goes to the Obama Victory Fund, a joint account for the president’s campaign organization and the Democratic National Committee. Obama raised $140 million for his re-election campaign through the end of January, Federal Election Commission reports show. Looks like the Obama 2012 campaign is on and poppin’. Go ‘head Clifford! Atlanta rap star and actor T.I. has joined the cast of “Boss” on pay cable network Starz starring Kelsey Grammer as the mayor of Chicago hiding the fact he has a degenerative neurological disease. Production for season two begins in Chicago Monday. His part will be in a season-long arc as a former gangbanger with an eye on a political career. According to the story in Deadline.com, “he is the conduit between a local Alderman and the only group powerful enough to function as a grassroots organization in the projects – gangs.” Starz, like other paid cable networks that rely on subscriptions rather than advertising, doesn’t necessarily focus on overnight ratings but more about pleasing its subscribers. “Boss” was quickly renewed last fall despite modest numbers. (It opened at 659,000 viewers, then fell to 319,000 viewers week two. With repeated viewing, the debut drew about 3 million viewers over its first three days.) Grammer won a Golden Globe earlier this year for his role on ‘Boss.” T.I. has acted in three major films: “ATL,” “American Gangster” and most recently 2010’s “Takers.” He is currently on a reality show, “T.I. and Tiny,” on VH1, which averages about 2.5 million viewers a week. Though the network has not said anything about a renewal, if T.I. is willing to move forward, I can’t imagine VH1 would say no for a second season. Jack White’s ‘Saturday Night Live’ performance proves he has awesome to spare, in Bigger Than the Sound. By James Montgomery Jack White and Lindsay Lohan on “Saturday Night Live” Photo: NBC The most distracting thing on “Saturday Night Live” this weekend wasn’t Lindsay Lohan’s face (or overall lack of preparation); it was Jack White and his general awesomeness. This is, of course, nothing new. Back in 2010, when writing about the White Stripes’ “Under Great White Northern Lights” film, I compared White to “a woodblock printer, a missionary, a wheelwright [and] a buckskin-clad frontiersman” (among other things), all of which are thoroughly awesome in their own way. Shoot, before that, I praised White for phoning a Chicago radio station — from Spain, nonetheless — to accuse them of cowardice (always awesome) after they played a leaked copy of the Stripes’ Icky Thump album. ( White subsequently rationalized the call to me thusly : “Jack White the singer and songwriter isn’t reacting to you; it’s the president of Third Man Records calling you and asking for an explanation.” And referring to yourself in the third person is most definitely awesome.) In reality, there is no end to White’s inherent awesomeness. He makes his entire road crew dress in matching suits and bowler hats. He haggled like a pro (and wore an excellent fedora) on “American Pickers.” He runs his entire Third Man empire out of a record shop/ warehouse located next to some train tracks in a less-than-desirable section of Nashville. He’s recorded with auctioneers and the Insane Clown Posse (and just about everyone else). He made the “Treat Me Like Your Mother” video. And the sentiments he expressed when announcing the end of the White Stripes — namely, “The White Stripes belong to you now and you can do with it whatever you want” — well, they were certainly incredibly awesome too. Anyway, here’s the point: As you are probably aware, next month, White will release his first solo album, Blunderbuss. And this weekend on “Saturday Night Live,” while Lohan flailed, he performed a pair of songs from that album: sublime first single “Love Interruption” and the spastic, space-truckin’ stomper “Sixteen Saltines.” They were notable for several reasons, the least of which being that, unlike the recent spate of “SNL” musical, uh, efforts — I’m looking at you, Lana Del Rey and Karmin — they were actually really good. And the pair of songs probably served as a reminder to some about White’s power and prowess. But that’s not what made them so distracting. Rather, it was the fact that, for reasons apparent only to him, White decided to bring two backing bands to the show: one all female, the other entirely male. And sure, you could probably argue that the lithe “Love Interruption” could only be played by females, while the more muscular “Sixteen Saltines” benefited from male musicians ( Noel Gallagher certainly believes both of these things to be true ). In fact, that might actually be why White did it, though I’d prefer to think that he had another reason: Because he is awesome. From his earliest days, White has excelled at turning the most minute of details into the most important of points: everything from the Stripes’ unflagging color scheme to the “official tartans” the band had made for their “aluminum anniversary” (that’s 10 years, FYI). It’s sort of what makes him stand out from his rock-star contemporaries — he genuinely seems to care about stuff like connecting the dots and cultivating a mystique. And his “SNL” stunt is just the latest example of this; not only were his backing bands uniform in their sex, they wore color-coordinated, outfits too. Is there anyone else who would go to these lengths, for no particular reason? Of course not. And yet, the best thing about White is the fact that, even though we’ve come to expect the unexpected from him, we’re always surprised by what he does. Or how effortlessly he seems to do it. Blowing the likes of Lana Del Rey off the “SNL” stage isn’t difficult, but doing it with style to spare — well, that’s something else entirely. It’s awesome. And it’s inherently Jack White. He’s back and badder than ever, with two new bands at his disposal. For his next trick, perhaps he’ll try to revive Lohan’s career — and who knows? He might even succeed. What do you think of White’s latest incarnation? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Jack White Lindsay Lohan
