Red Hot Chili Peppers Reveal Origins Of ‘Rain Dance Maggie’

New single started life as an hour-long jam session, Anthony Kiedis tells MTV News. By James Montgomery Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Anthony Kiedis Photo: MTV News On Friday, the Red Hot Chili Peppers officially ended their hiatus with the premiere of “The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie,” the first single from their upcoming I’m With You album. About a month before the premiere of “Maggie,” MTV News sat down with RHCP’s Anthony Kiedis and Josh Klinghoffer in Venice, California, to talk about the band’s new album (and the lengthy break that preceded it). We’ll be rolling out more of the interview as we get closer to I’m With You ‘s August 30 release date, but we’ve already given fans a taste of what they can expect, when Kiedis and Klinghoffer explained the genesis of the album’s title. And now, with “Maggie” officially out of the box, we figured it would be time to pull the curtain back on a second portion of the chat, in which Kiedis revealed the origins of the song itself — origins that began with an hour-long jam session and exactly one classic bass line. “When I first heard [‘Maggie’], I didn’t know it would be a single. [But] I knew that I loved the jam, ” Kiedis explained. “My first recording of that, I don’t think it had many vocals on it. It was kind of mostly instrumental, about an hour long. Flea brought it in as a very specific exercise to write a classic bass line. He woke up, had his tea, sat down: ‘I’m going to write a classic bass line. You can’t stop me.’ Played his bass line until he felt it was cooked into a classic, brought it to us and said, ‘This is Classic Number One.’ On a good day, you just know if there’s music to wrestle with and get with, and it was one of those moments.” So Kiedis sat down and listened to the track and was immediately struck by the propulsive groove Flea had laid down. And things just took off from there, with Klinghoffer adding a winging guitar line and drummer Chad Smith providing a loose, limber backbeat. But even if things were taking shape, Kiedis said he never thought “Maggie” would be anything more than a B-side. If that. “I took it home and it felt so fun to listen to at length that I literally left it on in my driveway, opened the door and danced with the tree next to me for quite a while,” he said. “I had no idea that it would even be a song, I just thought, ‘Oh, this is a great dance track. Let’s put it on as a B-side, [an] hour long.’ And then, as fate would have it, people heard it, and they were like, ‘Oh, that’s your best thing right there. That’s your best thing.’ ” And so, eventually, “The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie” made the leap from jam to official first single. And now that it’s out there, Kiedis knows he’s going asked plenty of times just who this Maggie is. Unfortunately, he’s not about to reveal his inspirations. “It’s just a collection of memories and people along the way that had maybe left my consciousness until I heard that music, and then they kind of came dancing back into my consciousness, and out the old pen onto the paper,” he smiled. “Names have been changed to protect the innocent. Although there is a Maggie, I realized later. There’s two Maggies, actually.” What do you think of the Chili Peppers’ new song? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Red Hot Chili Peppers

Red Hot Chili Peppers Explain: Why I’m With You?

New guitarist Josh Klinghoffer came up with album title, which has become a rallying cry for Chili Peppers fans. By James Montgomery The Red Hot Chili Peppers’ I’m With You Photo: Warner Bros. Records By now, you’ve probably seen the cover of the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ I’m With You, a minimal, macabre work by British artist Damien Hirst that’s a long way from the hyper-color, freak-out cover of The Uplift Mofo Party Plan, to say the very least (and, as any art major can probably tell you, sort of recalls Hirst’s own “Lullaby Spring” too). Now that you’re familiar with the artwork that will adorn the album, you may be wondering about that title — after all, I’m With You is the first Chili Peppers effort since 1989’s Mother’s Milk not to take its name from a song on the album. So why did they decide to break from tradition this time out? Well, as they told MTV News last month (in an interview you’ll be seeing plenty more of in the very near future), it had everything to do with new guitarist Josh Klinghoffer and a single scooch. “We thought of calling it a song title off the record, and when I mentioned that to [producer] Rick [Rubin], he said, ‘That just makes it seem like we don’t have enough ideas, ‘ ” RHCP frontman Anthony Kiedis said. “And I didn’t even stop to think of the fact that every one of our records is like that, and I don’t think ‘shortage of ideas’ was ever our primary dilemma, considering the mountain range of scraps we left behind. So, as an experiment, I started making lists of titles, and all of them, in retrospect, were quite lame, and none of them really captured the spirit of this record, which we had all very much fallen in love with. “And then Josh showed up one day, maybe a day before there was some sort of deadline for a title, and he wrote [‘I’m With You’] on a piece of paper,” he continued, “And very subtly scooched it [in front of me], and I was like, ‘What’s that ?’ And we all kind of put our eyes on it at the same time and went: ‘ That is the title of our record.’ ” Klinghoffer said the title came to him almost out of nowhere but that it seemed perfect — not just for the band’s new album, but for where they are at this point in their careers too. “It seems pretty open, pretty apropos to where the band is, what the band’s doing, how the record wants to be related to, or related with,” he explained. And, though it may not be the most traditional Chili Peppers title, I’m With You has already taken on new life as a de facto rallying cry for the band’s fans. And that’s an added bonus no one in the band could have ever predicted. “It’s open, and there’s not really a negative connotation. It’s inviting. The first time I heard a non-one-of-us mention it, it gave me the best feeling you could imagine,” Kiedis said. “Unbeknownst to me, the news [of the album’s title] had hit the radio, and some kid came up to me and he shook my hand and he said, ‘I’m with you!’ And I was like, ‘Why are you saying that? Where did you hear that?’ He said, ‘I’m with you!’ And then I realized that he must’ve heard it on the radio or something, and it was just a great feeling.” What do you think of the album title? Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Returning In August With I’m With You

Band’s first album in five years will be preceded by the single ‘The Adventures of Raindance Maggie.’ By James Montgomery Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Anthony Kiedis Well, it’s certainly a better title than Dr. Johnny Skinz’s Disproportionately Rambunctious Polar Express Machine-Head. On August 30, the Red Hot Chili Peppers will return with their first new album in more than five years, a Rick-Rubin produced disc that they’re calling I’m With You. The Peppers broke the news on their official site on Sunday evening, with bassist Flea adding his own personal flourishes on Twitter . According to several reports, the first single off the album is called “The Adventures of Raindance Maggie,” and will be released on July 18. I’m With You will be RHCP’s first album since 2006’s massively successful double disc Stadium Arcadium , and their first since the departure of longtime guitarist John Frusciante, who announced that he had left the group due to “musical differences” in late 2009. He’s replaced on the new album by friend (and touring Chili Pepper) Josh Klinghoffer. In an interview earlier this year with Spin magazine, RHCP frontman Anthony Kiedis said the band was reinvigorated by a lengthy hiatus the members took following their Arcadium world tour, and the addition of Klinghoffer to the mix, describing the recording process of the (then-untitled) album as being “one of evolution.” “Before, some of our jams were a bit hit-and-miss,” he told the magazine. “On this record, a decent number of songs were actually thought out and planned in a way we had never done before. That is, with Flea’s new knowledge of music theory, we explored the writing process with a bit more precision. “It is always going to change the chemistry and feeling of the music when such a creative force as John Frusciante leaves,” Kiedis continued. “He was something unique that shaped our sound then, but now I think it’s also something fresh and exciting to have a new, incredible musical mind working with us now. We are still the Red Hot Chili Peppers, but we also have to adapt and welcome new opportunities. After all, that is how we’ve survived all these years.” Are you looking forward to hearing new music from the Red Hot Chili Peppers? Tell us in the comments. Related Artists Red Hot Chili Peppers

Kid Rock’s Born Free Due November 16

New album will contain collaborations with T.I., Sheryl Crow and Zac Brown. By Gil Kaufman Kid Rock Photo: JulNeil Lupin/ Redferns There’s no way you’re going to be able to confuse Kid Rock ‘s upcoming album Born Free with twitch-pop bomb-thrower M.I.A.’s song of the same name . First of all, Rock’s eighth studio album, due November 16, was produced by legendary knobmeister Rick Rubin. Second, even though Rock, like M.I.A., will release a song called “Born Free” as his first single, the Detroit bad boy’s tune focuses not on world affairs, but on the economic decline of his hometown, Detroit. A press release announcing the album calls Born Free “transformational,” going on to note that while Rock retains his “edge, wit, and swagger” on the record, he has left his rap-metal roots behind. “There isn’t even a parental warning sticker,” the release says. Rock described how D-town inspired the Americana feel of some tracks. “The catalyst for this record was Detroit, and my thoughts on the world through the lens of Detroit,” he said. “Watching everything go downhill over the past few years, the economy, the loss of jobs everywhere, I wanted to make a record that reflected the times but that still had soul.” Most of the album was recorded during a two-week session in Los Angeles with a band that included Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers keyboardist Benmont Tench, Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith, Los Lobos guitarist/singer David Hidalgo and Chavez guitarist Matt Sweeney. The release also noted that Rock logged time in studios in Detroit, Nashville and Atlanta to lay down collaborations with fellow hometown rock icon Bob Seger, former flame Sheryl Crow, Zac Brown and Trace Adkins. T.I. and Martina McBride will appear on a song called “Care.” The disc is the follow-up to 2007’s slow-burn success Rock N Roll Jesus , which produced the Lynyrd Skynyrd-inspired 2008 hit “All Summer Long.” Rock provided a preview of the album earlier this month when he performed six of its songs during a series of hometown shows. In addition to the Detroit-boosting anthem “Times Like These,” he pulled the cover back on the Springsteen-like title track, the midtempo “Slow My Roll,” the somber “Rock On,” the 1970s-style rocker “Feels Good to Me” and the Rolling Stones-influenced “God Bless Saturday.” Related Artists Kid Rock

Global Warming Doomsday Vault Deposit Trip Emits 24,300+ Pounds of Carbon

Some red hot chili peppers are on tour, and they’re emitting a lot of greenhouse gases. But it’s not the California rock band emitting carbon on a worldwide concert tour; it’s seeds from chili peppers traveling to the “doomsday” vault in Norway. A bipartisan congressional delegation visited the Svalbard Global Seed Vault July 11 as a side trip during the 19 th Annual Session of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe Parliamentary Assembly. Sens. Ben Cardin, D-Md ., and Dick Durbin, D-Ill., among others, delivered New World chili pepper seeds to the vault, a “fail-safe back-up plan to protect the existing world food supplies from destruction in the event of a large-scale catastrophe.” “As we manage the impact of climate change and other natural and man-made disasters around the world, the seed vault in Svalbard will be the safety deposit box that ensures we can keep that food supply intact,” Cardin said in a statement. Cardin, a member of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, is outspoken about environmental issues ranging from green jobs to clean energy . Despite Cardin’s positions, his trip to Norway left a giant carbon footprint – bigger than the footprint left in an entire year by the average American. According to carbon management organization TerraPass.com , the seven-member delegation generated more than 24,300 pounds of carbon just by flying round-trip from Washington, D.C., to Oslo, Norway. That doesn’t account for other travel associated with the trip. According to Climate Crisis , a website affiliated with Al Gore’s “An Inconvenient Truth,” the average person generates 15,000 pounds of carbon dioxide a year. Cardin’s delegation generated about 1.5 times as much carbon dioxide just in traveling as the average person generates in an entire year. Durbin, the Senate Democrats’ second in command, has also championed climate change legislation, going as far as calling climate change a “national security threat” with his Global Climate Change Security Oversight Act , introduced in 2007: “For years, too many of us have viewed global warming as simply an environmental or economic issue. We now need to consider it as a security concern.” Despite other climate-conscious liberals hypocritically leaving giant carbon footprints , the media continue to treat it as water under the bridge, which in this case, isn’t as good as the hit Red Hot Chili Peppers song.

The Bee Gees’ Barry and Robin Gibb will be there to talk about their ’70s pop contemporaries in ABBA. Record executive David Geffen will be honored by Jackson Browne, whose debut album was also the first release for the impresario’s Asylum Records. Carole King will induct this year’s group of songwriters. Former frontman-turned-solo artist Peter Gabriel will reportedly not take part in the Genesis induction. Last year, Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea inducted Metallica, who invited former bass player Jason Newsted to perform with them. It was a decided effort to avoid the train wreck of the Van Halen induction, where only former members Sammy Hagar and Michael Anthony showed up for the ceremony. Related Artists Green Day
