‘Hunger Games: Catching Fire’ To Light Up IMAX Screens

Second film in the series will become the sixth blockbuster to feature IMAX footage when it’s released next November. By Kevin P. Sullivan Jennifer Lawrence in “The Hunger Games” Photo: Lionsgate It shouldn’t come as a surprise that for the second film in the “Hunger Games” series, new director Francis Lawrence wants to make ” Catching Fire ” even bigger than its predecessor. And now we know exactly how big Katniss, Peeta, and Gale will be in the sequel: 70 feet tall. According to an announcement from Lionsgate, “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” will feature sequences shot in the IMAX format when it opens in theaters in November of next year. Lionsgate digitally remastered the first ” Hunger Games ” film the IMAX format, but this will be the first time in the series that sequence will be actually shot in the much larger format. The IMAX showings for “The Hunger Games” greatly contributed to that film’s huge box-office presence, which is nearing the $650 million mark in global ticket sales, thanks in part to higher ticket prices, and should remain a factor when the movie opens in China later this month. “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” will only be the sixth blockbuster to feature IMAX footage. Christopher Nolan began the trend when he shot roughly a half an hour of his Batman sequel, “The Dark Knight” on 70mm IMAX film. The follow-up to that film, “The Dark Knight Rises,” is said to contain close to an hour of IMAX footage. Most recently, Brad Bird filmed key action set pieces for “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol” in the larger format. “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” opens in theaters on November 23, 2013. B*tchazzness: Cowardly Man Punches 10-Year Old For Being Too Rowdy In Movie Theatre

Sounds like somebody needs to join Tami Roman in anger management. Man Punches 10-Year-Old In The Face During Movie A Washington State moviegoer who took matters into his own hands after becoming fed up with children who were being too loud in a movie theatre has been charged with second-degree assault. The man, who says he thought the child he hit was an adult, claims to have asked the “people” behind him to quiet down while watching Titanic 3D with his girlfriend and became enraged after his request was met with laughter. “I got so mad that it just happened,” Yong Hyun Kim, 21, told police who arrested him the night of April 11 at the AMC Kent Station 14, in Kent, a south Seattle suburb. The 10-year-old lost a tooth and had a bloody nose in the confrontation. Kim spent a night in the Kent city jail and appeared April 12 in King County District Court and was released, said county prosecutor’s spokesman Dan Donohoe. Kim was charged May 16 with second-degree assault. If convicted, he could be sentenced to three to nine months in jail, Donohoe said Tuesday. Last time we checked, most 10-year old boys didn’t look like adults……even in dark movie theaters. Source

CBGB Biopic Adds Stars, Will Shoot in Georgia, Naturally

Casting news continues to trickle out for the film based on the wild life and times of CBGB, none of which is quite as eye-opening as word that the story of one of New York City’s most legendary, lamented live-music venues will be filmed largely in… Savannah, Georgia. So it goes! We get some stuntbozo driving a sportscar into a Sbarro for Jerry Bruckheimer, and Savannah gets Malin Åkerman as Debbie Harry , Rupert Grint as Cheetah Chrome, Joel David Moore as Joey Ramone, and Alan Rickman in the aforementioned role of club proprietor Hilly Kristal, all reviving the dawn of punk and new wave in the edgy metropolis where the Girl Scouts were founded Hollywood honchos go to self-immolate . Rock on, bitches : All of the movie’s interior shots will be done at Meddin Studios, which will be transformed to look like the iconic New York club, said director Randall Miller. “We’re going to build the interior of the club on the stages here,” Miller said. “Then the plan is we’ll do some shooting on the streets of downtown Savannah — and finally a few days in New York. “We’re using both Georgia and New York for New York,” he joked. “Savannah has a kind of downtown area that could really work for so many cities,” Miller said. “That translates pretty well in what we’re doing.” Fine, do what you’ve gotta do. By which I mean cast James Franco as Richard Hell already . [ The Strut , Savannah Morning News via EV Grieve ]

Men in Black 3’s Chinese Villains Neuralyzed By China’s Censors

It’s no secret that Chinese censors are tough nuts to crack when it comes to Hollywood imports like Men in Black 3 . And, sure — those scenes of aliens with reptilian tongues disguised as Chinatown restaurant workers serving up contraband foodstuffs played on easy jokes, and were reportedly excised from the Chinese release. But was there something more subtle and subversive at play when Agent J “neuralized” a crowd of innocent Chinatown bystanders? Per the Telegraph, Men in Black 3 ‘s Chinatown scenes were the focus of China’s censors, who took pains to cut out moments from the film that painted people of Chinese ancestry — well, aliens posing as Asians working in a Chinese restaurant, at least — in a negative light. Reports vary on just how much was cut out, with The Telegraph citing 13 minutes of edited footage. Sure, whatever. Take out the seemingly villainous Chinese folks. More interesting is the speculation surrounding why a scene depicting Smith mind-wiping a group of civilians right after his Chinatown brawl might have been removed. “This could have been a hint on the use of internet censorship to maintain social stability,” commented China’s Southern Daily newspaper (via The Telegraph ). Censoring the MIB neuralizer from audiences because it’s a form of insidious government mind control? Hilariously ironic. I’d like to think Barry Sonnenfeld and Smith and Co. had this kind of subversive agenda in mind, but YEAH RIGHT. All I want to know is, how can I neuralyze that hideous Pitbull song from my brain? Zhang Ziyi Denies Making $110 Million as a… Prostitute?

What to even say about this wild report out of Hong Kong, where the provocateurs at Apple Daily — basically the Daily Mail of the East — have published the scandalous allegations that actress Zhang Ziyi sexually serviced “various rich and powerful figures” in China from 2007 to 2011, starting with a disgraced politician and eventually earning the equivalent of $110 million for her “work.” Wait, what? Needless to say, the Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon star denies everything, from the report that she was paid roughly $950,000 to sleep with ousted Commerce Minister Bo Xilai in 2007 (a transaction that a source says was repeated at least 10 times over the ensuing years) to the claims by Bo’s former associate that he “pimped her out to two other high-level officials as well.” Nevertheless, pending a full investigation, the Chinese government is said to have forbid her travel to the Cannes premiere of her new adaptation of Dangerous Liaisons . (Co-star Cecilia Cheung attended in her place.) Zhang, meanwhile, has thanked her suporters and promised to bring the legal hammer down on Apple Daily, from whom her lawyers demanded a complete retraction and published apology (for starters): “Friends have advised us to release a short statement and not take this seriously. The more you argue, the more you will stir up. It would be better to step aside until people lose interest and the lies disappear. The innocent will always be innocent. “But this time we don’t want to be silent. If we leave these lies to spread, what is completely untrue will be at risk of becoming a half-truth. This time, we are telling those rumor-makers that we will respond. We will prove our side of the story; we’ll seek legal justice; we’ll find you in the darkest corner and go after you. “We will seek justice for Zhang Ziyi by taking legal action against Apple Daily and against any other media publishing these false reports.” Yikes . This will be interesting. Anyway, best of luck, Zhang! John Travolta knows a good lawyer if you need a little extra back-up. [ ONTD , China.org.cn ]

Maksim Chmerkovskiy and Peta Murgatroyd: New Couple Alert?

Dancing With the Stars’ Maksim Chmerkovskiy was photographed kissing fellow pro dancer co-star Peta Murgatroyd this weekend, sparking rumors of romance. On Saturday at the Encore Beach Club in Las Vegas, Maksim was there celebrating with Peta, who won Dancing With the Stars with Donald Driver last week. That wasn’t the only time the hard-bodied pair and rumored couple were spotted together in Sin City. Witnesses have seen them together all over Vegas. And, at the opening of Chmerkovskiy’s new dance studio in Connecticut on May 23, the pair stood arm-in-arm while he whispered in her ear. Hmm … “She’s had a crush on him for a long time,” a source tells People of Peta. “They are really great together. And he is very happy. It’s early but I think this will last. They’re a great match, a good couple. She says they’re not dating but they are. Everyone knows it.” Still, at the debut of the Dance With Me studio (which Maks opened with his brother Val and fellow pro Tony Dovolani), both danced around questions . “I’m here to support Maksim,” was all Murgatroyd would say about Chmerkovskiy, who wouldn’t directly address the nature of their relationship either. “I try to keep certain things private just because – what’s a politically correct way of saying it? It’s none of anybody’s business,” he said. “It’s very intimate and personal.” Yeah. They’re totally doing the horizontal Argentine tango. [Photo: Fame/Flynet]

THG Presents: Great Moments in Celebrity-Paparazzi Fights

Justin Bieber’s alleged attack on a member of the paparazzi – who accuses him of roughing him up and leaving him in need of medical attention – is clearly BS. Can you see Justin Bieber roughing someone up? Seriously? That’s beside the point, though. Whatever happened, Biebs’ altercation is just the latest in a long string of tense run-ins between stars and the media who cover the celebrity gossip we crave. Here’s a look back at seven of the most memorable: Bald Britney Spears Attacks Paparazzi 1. Britney Spears : After a downward spiral that saw her shave her head, file for divorce and deliver her second child in the span of a year, Spears suffered a meltdown in February 2007 that saw her violently attack a paparazzo’s car with an umbrella: 2. Russell Brand : Katy Perry’s ex recently gave a whole new meaning to the term “dropped call” as he grabbed a photographer’s iPhone and flung it through a nearby window. Brand later turned himself in after a warrant was issued for his arrest. 3. Kanye West : The rapper racked up three misdemeanor charges in 2008 after he was arrested for allegedly wrestling with a photographer at LAX, grabbing his camera and smashing it on the floor. The charges were eventually dropped. 4. Alec Baldwin . The actor, whose fiery temper has led to some nasty public incidents, was actually placed under citizen’s arrest in 1995 after he allegedly punched a cameraman and broke his nose. A jury determined that he had acted in self-defense. The comedian later joked, “Since Steve Jobs died I cannot bear to see anyone use an iPhone irreverently, what I did was a tribute to his memory .” 5. Sean Penn : The two-time Oscar winner reportedly found a photographer in his hotel bedroom in China and dangled him from the ninth-floor balcony. Penn, never one to hold back, was reportedly charged with attempted murder for that charade but fled the country before authorities could nab him. 6. Lindsay Lohan : Driving over a paparazzo’s foot is just one entry on her laundry list of legal woes. Some people simply should not drive cars. 7. Bieber . Just by getting in the guy’s grill, Justin earned our respect.
