‘Dark Shadows’: Johnny Depp, Vampires, Spooky First Looks In 2011

We relive the best moments of the year as production on Tim Burton’s 2012 adaptation finally kicked off. By John Mitchell Tim Burton and Johnny Depp in production for “Dark Shadows” Photo: Warner Bros. Pictures This year, filming finally began on director Tim Burton’s long -in-the-works big-screen adaptation of “Dark Shadows,” a campy, late-1960s soap opera about vampires, witches and time travel. Burton is a lifelong fan of the series and, as his partner Helena Bonham Carter told MTV News this month, “This was a thing that he raced home to see when he was about age 10.” With its atmospheric New England setting and myriad mysterious characters, “Shadows” has the feel of a classic Burton film, more akin to his “Sleepy Hollow” and “Batman” flicks than his more candy-colored efforts like “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.” And Burton at his dark and spooky best, working on a passion project, is something to get excited about. Production began on “Shadows” at Pinewood Studios outside of London in May. The director lined up a dream cast — from Johnny Depp and Michelle Pfeiffer to Chloe Moretz and Jackie Earle Haley, not a single part appears miscast. And while Burton has kept the film under lock and key, paparazzi did catch a fleeting glimpse of Depp during production, which briefly became cause for worry among some fans of the series. The shot of Depp in character as Barnabus Collins, wearing heavy white makeup walking down a seaside hill, found its way online in mid-September and was derided by fans as being too cartoonish, too reminiscent of Depp’s styling in Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland.” Based on those initial images, the world Burton looked to be creating seemed to have little in common with the Gothic aesthetic established in the soap. Concerns were alleviated, however, when just a week later, Entertainment Weekly debuted the first official image from the film. Through Burton’s lens (and some creepy filters), Depp’s makeup took on the undead-but-oddly alluring look you’d expect from a traditional vampire movie. The rest of the cast captured the feel of their TV counterparts too: Pfeiffer looked regal and sullen as family matriarch Elizabeth Collins Stoddard; Johnny Lee Miller’s smarm as Roger Collins was apparent; and Bonham Carter looked every bit the orange-haired, eccentric “alcoholic psychiatrist,” Dr. Julia Hoffman. Of the film, Moretz, who plays Carolyn Stoddard, had this to say when talking to MTV News last month: “It straddles the typical Burton line: camp and drama. It’s an amazing movie. Going in and working on this movie with Tim Burton and Johnny Depp and Michelle Pfeiffer and Helena Bonham Carter — it really does get back to Tim’s roots. It gets back to ‘Beetlejuice,’ ‘Edward Scissorhands,’ back to true Burton . So working on this movie was epic for me because he’s always been my dream director to work with because, god, he’s so iconic.” Moretz’s “Shadows” co-stars share the love for Burton. Pfeiffer , who worked with the director on 1992’s”Batman Returns,” described work on the new film as a “dream job.” “[It is] such a fun cast and we had so much fun. I just love working with Tim [Burton], I love watching him direct. [There’s] nobody like him,” she told MTV News. “I loved meeting Helena and getting to know her. I hope it’s successful so that we can do a bunch of them because it was such a fantastic, creative group of people.” Hopefully, that on-set camaraderie and excitement will help “Shadows” fulfill fans’ high expectations. The original soap spanned some 1,225 episodes, so there’s plenty of plot for sequels if Pfeiffer gets her wish. While we’re still waiting for a trailer for the May 11, 2012, release (come on, Tim, give us something!), what we’ve seen so far gives us faith that Burton and Co. are getting it all exactly right! Taylor Armstrong Releases Book Cover, Tells Abuse Victims: Learn From Me!

Yes, Taylor Armstrong really is coming out with a memoir that details the alleged abuse she suffered at the hands of late husband Russell Armstrong. It will be titled “Hiding from Reality: My Story of Love, Loss and Finding the Courage Within,” and Taylor unveiled the book cover last night on Bravo: “My book takes readers behind the glamour of Beverly Hills to show them the terrible violence I suffered, and the slow and painful process of rebuilding my shattered life,” Armstrong said in a statement. “I want readers in abusive relationships to learn from my suffering and use my book to help them find their own courage within.” Yes, fellow abuse victims, you can learn a lot from Taylor, namely: if you are rich and famous and have a televised platform from which you can promote, you, too, can profit from the suicide of your estranged husband. What do you think of Armstrong releasing this book?

Jay-Z On Past Assault Charge: “F*ck It I’m Guilty!” [EXCLUSIVE]

Excerpt from:

There were tons of highlights from Jay-Z and Kanye West’s Watch the Throne shows at Philips Arena this weekend, but one that really stood out was when Jigga performed his hit “Izzo (H.O.V.A.),” which includes the hook “Not guilty / Y’all got to feel me!” But during the Watch the Throne show, Jay altered the lyrics to “Izzo” and said on the hook: “F*ck it, I’m guilty!” Back in 1999 Jay-Z was charged in New York with stabbing record exec Lance “Un” Rivera at a listening party for Q-Tip’s “Amplified” album. Apparently Jigga blamed Rivera for allegedly bootlegging the “In My Lifetime Volume 3″ album. Despite maintaining his innocence in two songs (see below), Jay eventually plead guilty to third-degree assault and was sentenced to three years of probation. He was facing 15 years in jail if the case had gone to trial, which is why many people speculate he plead guilty rather than face prison time, even though he maintained his innocence. Watch The Throne Concert Review [EXCLUSIVE]

See the article here:

From the moment that Jay-Z and Kanye West took the stage at Philips Arena — on identical cubes with images of vicious Rottweilers rising from both ends of the venue — there was an inescapable feeling that there was going to be something regal about this show. After all, it’s the Watch the Throne tour, and Kanye and Jay did not disappoint. They dynamic duo kicked things off with “H.A.M.,” the first unofficial single from their joint “Watch the Throne” album. From there it was a dizzying, highly-entertaining, at times emotional 2 1/2 plus hour thrill ride of hit after hit. No special guests showed up at the concert, but Jay and Yay have so many hits between them that was a minor factor. The spectacular light and laser show and fiery pyrotechnics certainly helped, even if people were expecting T.I. to come out for his verse on the “N*ggas in Paris” remix. There was also no way the two could perform all of their hits, and it was noticeable that Jay didn’t perform any songs from his classic debut “Reasonable Doubt” or his “American Gangster” album. After warming up the receptive crowd a huge American flag was unfurled on the main stage as Jay-Z and Kanye appeared together to perform their smash hit “Otis.” For the rest of the night the two superstars alternated between their respective hits and songs from Watch the Throne. At one point Kanye even shed a tear while performing overly-Auto Tuned versions of “Heartless” and “Runaway.” Raised in Chicago, a lot of fans might not realize that Kanye was actually born in Atlanta and his father still lives here. Jay made a point to announce to the crowd early in the show, referencing Yay, “He was born in ATL!” Jay also proclaimed proudly later on in the evening: “ATL, you are now looking at the best of black excellence!” One of the most poignant moments of the show was when the arena played Louis Armstrong’s “What A Wonderful World” and everyone sang along right before Jay and Yay went into “No Church in the Wild.” The only other moment that came close to that was when the two stars had everyone hold up a cell phone or lighter during “Made in America,” illuminating the entire arena. In the end Watch the Throne was an amazing show that lived up to all its hype. But should we expect anything less from two of hip hop’s greatest talents? Tony Todd: “Final Destination 5 Is The Perfect Date Movie”

Follow this link:

Tony Todd, the star of Final Destination 5, is on his way to visit his hometown of Washington D.C. on a sunny August morning, and hasn’t a care in the world.  While audiences know Todd for his role in the 1992 cult classic Candyman , he is a classically trained thespian whose roots started in theater.  Born into poverty to a single mother in 1954, Todd first fell into acting as a teenager since–as he puts it– “I wasn’t any good at basketball.” After 22 years in the game, and over 150 acting credits under his belt, Todd has carved out an impressive and enviable career—not bad for a geeky 6’5 teenager from Chocolate City. The Urban Daily chatted with Todd about his return as William Bludworth in the newest Final Destination movie,  his iconic role in Candyman , and the current state of the horror film genre. TUD: Tell us about the plot of Final Destination 5. Tony Todd: We have a new cast of young people with tragic demises and I have more than one scene. I like doing more than one scene, I like continuity (laughs) . There are a few theories going around as to who your character, Bludworth really is—one theory is that he’s death incarnate. What do you say to that? I think that’s too much of an easy choice, I mean how can you be death incarnate when you’re only in the movie for five minutes? Actually someone came up to me and said maybe Bludworth had cheated death himself.  I’ve never personally accepted he was the angel of death, or the emissary of death. Just a very unpopular guy. Why do you think the Final Destination franchise has remained so popular? Because it’s the perfect date movie.  Everybody loves a horror story because it’s a roller coaster ride –you wait for  the slow ride to the top then speed down with all the bumps, twists and turns.  If you’re a smart person, you bring your date and for every bump that goes on, you squeeze a little closer.  I think Final Destination is singularly responsible for more births in America in the last 10 years than any other movie. You might be on to something there. I know I’ve done the research.  I interview people when they leave the theatre, and when they see me they’re like “Oh my God!” That really freaks them out! Final Destination movies are known for their graphic death scenes.  Which ones are the most memorable to you? Well I’m a big fan of the first movie, because that was the template.  Jeffrey Reddick, the creator of  this franchise, is a genius.  In Final Destination 5 , the bridge collapse sequence is unlike anything you’ve ever seen. Audiences still remember you from the Candyman movies. Do people still stop you in the street about that role? Candyman is almost 20 years old and not a single day goes by when someone doesn’t stop me in the street.  It was a great role and one of the greatest experiences in my life. Have your kids seen Candyman ? They didn’t watch it until they were well into their teens.  True story—When Candyman first came out, my daughter and I were Christmas shopping, and people were harassing us.  Finally my daughter puts down her shopping bag and said “That’s not Candyman! That’s my dad!” I will never forget that, because that’s when we really bonded. Let’s talk a little about your background.  When you were growing up, which actors or actresses did you look up to or admire? When I was a kid I really loved Humphrey Bogart.  But when I was in theater school, Robert DeNiro was my go-to guy.  I like good actors like Marlon Brando and Gene Hackman.  I grew up a poor kid to a single mom, so as an African-American actor I have a responsibility to hold the mirror up and reflect our stories.  I’m living the dream and also escaped the inevitable. Your first lead role in a movie was in the remake of   Night of The Living Dead . Your character in that movie has historical significance, as the original was the first horror movie to cast an African-American (Duane Jones) in the lead role.  What are you memories about being cast in that project? I actually saw the original while I was studying to be an actor, and watching Duane Jones I thought “Good, there’s hope.”  When I heard they were casting for the remake I ran to the casting office and told them they had to let me audition.  I think they already had someone in mind, but the casting director took a chance on me and gave me the job. It was my first leading role and my son was born around that same time. It was a chance to play a hero, so I was very appreciative. We shot the movie in Washington, Pennsylvania, singularly the most racist place in America.  The beautiful thing is all these people were lining up to play zombies, and if I wasn’t an actor, they wouldn’t have anything to do with me. You also do a lot of voice-over work as well. How did you fall into that? When I was younger, I wanted to do Disney movies but I could never get a role.  When I finally got a part in Transformers 2 I called my daughter and told her “Honey, I’m gonna be a Transformer!”  and she said “Grow up Dad!” But it paid her tuition, so there you go! What are your thoughts on the current state of the horror genre, and should actors of color be more open-minded to doing these types of movies? Television is dying because of the influx of reality shows, so I think smart horror movies like “Final Destination”  area great thing because it makes people think.  I’m not a fan of torture for torture’s sake.  That’s why you’ll never see me in Saw.  I think young African-American filmmakers and actors need to hold their heads up and know if a project is meant for them, they’ll get it. AnnaSophia Robb in a Bikini of the Day

AnnaSophia Robb is some 17 year old girl who was in a bikini in the movie Soul Surfer, a movie about how sharks eat you if you’re a weird surfer hippie born again christian with a retarded looking face, but who you probably remember from masturbating to her in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, where she played the cunty one named Violet….. She’s hot, but then again, what 17 year old blonde chick in a bikini isn’t hot…and I’m saying that as a general accepted fact…cuz no matter what guys I hang out with…they go nuts over barely legal or almost legal girls when they walk by…I’m talking from my lawyer to the sex offender…dudes love youthful tight ass…it’s coded in our DNA….but I think it’s got a lot ot do with this generation of vagina being far sluttier than generations of 17 year olds before them…they are into anal sex according to Oprah, they sext and put on cam shows according to the news, all in a time when older married men are still trying to convince their wives of 20 years to try anal sex… This generation grew up on internet porn and Paris Hilton…they are the myspace duck pouters bikini pics…and the whole slut thing is quite lovely and accepted by their peers….making me wish I wasn’t creepy to this demo…cuz otherwise I’d be hitting up their parties…you know as the responsible chaparone who looks and doesn’t touch….but only if they are 18 though, cuz otherwise it’s wrong….to film it….cuz legally in Canada the cut off age is 16….Don’t blame me, blame the legal system…but in all honesty, I generally like older pussy better, you know cuz you can have better converstation….as there’s only so much Zac Effron or twilight talk a pervert can take… To See The Rest of the Pics Follow This Link
