Source: Adene Sanchez/ Getty Images / Getty All Whites Matter… Hoschton, GA Mayor Rejects Black Candidate We’d love to say this is unbelievable but we’ve long known that Georgia outside of Atlanta isn’t the friendliest of places for black people. The mayor of Hoschton, GA is currently the subject of an Atlanta Journal Constitution investigation because she allegedly withheld a job candidate from consideration for a city administrator role because he was black. According to documents obtained by the AJC and interviews with city officials, Mayor Theresa Kenerly told a member of the City Council she pulled Keith Henry’s resume from a packet of four finalists “because he is black, and the city isn’t ready for this.” The mayor’s comments were reportedly whispered to a member of the council during a closed-door session on March 4th, and were overheard. Councilwoman Hope Weeks said Kenerly repeated her comments in the parking lot after the meeting, according to a document released by the city in response to an open records request from the AJC. “She proceeded to tell me that the candidate was real good, but he was black and we don’t have a big black population and she just didn’t think Hoschton was ready for that,” Weeks wrote in an account dated March 4. Weeks shared Kenerly’s comments with Councilwoman Susan Powers and the two decided to take the issue to city attorney Thomas Mitchell. “Both of us were just appalled, so we thought we had to do something to stop it,” Powers said. Weeks declined to be interviewed on the record, but issued a statement saying she was disappointed in the mayor’s comments about the candidate. “Mr. Henry was a very professional and qualified candidate who was a finalist for the position of city administrator before withdrawing to accept another position,” she said. “I am thankful for the opportunity to serve the citizens of Hoschton, but this has been one of the most challenging seasons of my life.” According to emails obtained by the AJC, Mitchell and the city’s five elected officials opted to continue the hiring process, allowing Kenerly to attend but not participate. Mitchell also cautioned officials to cease sending emails about the issue. “I do not think it in the best interests of the city (or the individual elected officials) to continue emailing in this manner,” he wrote in a March 14 email. In emails, Powers protested the mayor’s continued involvement in the search for a city administrator. “Since she corrupted this entire process by trying to shield the application of Mr. Henry from Council members and then making the comment to the effect that while he is qualified he should not be considered because he is black and the city is not ready for this, she should not be a part of this hiring process,” Powers wrote. “I am appalled that in 2019 an applicant would not be hired based solely on the color of their skin.” Henry withdrew his candidacy not long after the March 4 meeting and a phone interview with council members. He told the AJC he chose to withdraw because the city asked that he pay his travel, room, and board to travel for an in-person interview with the promise of reimbursement at a later date. Two of the other candidates for the position were local, while the third was willing to drive from the Georgia coast at his own expense. Henry told the AJC he didn’t detect any bias after being interviewed by Kenerly over the phone but as a black man applying for executive government positions in small Southern towns, he wasn’t surprised that it may have existed. “It comes with the territory,” he said. “If you live in America as a minority you can’t be naïve that it is the reality that you face.” Kenerly refused to initially answer questions about her reported comments, saying she could not publicly talk about matters that occurred in executive session even though the law does not forbid that. “I can’t say I said it or not said it,” she said. Kenerly later issued a statement disputing accounts from other city officials. Kenerly was not without defenders. Councilman Jim Cleveland confirmed many aspects of the story, including his account that Kenerly made a tearful apology in another executive session on March 12, where council members say she claimed to be “looking out” for Henry because the city does not have a lot of minority residents. “I was there for that,” Cleveland said. “She cried. She had tears in her eyes. It was in my opinion a very sincere apology.” Cleveland also seemed to express understanding of Kenerly’s motives saying: “I understood where she was coming from,” he said. “I understand Theresa saying that, simply because we’re not Atlanta. Things are different here than they are 50 miles down the road.” Cleveland described Hoschton as “a predominantly white community” not in accord with urban sensibilities about race.“I don’t know how they would take it if we selected a black administrator. She might have been right,” he said. Cleveland said he ranked Henry fourth out of the candidates in any case because he’d elected not to come for the in-person interview. Councilman Cleveland also shared his not so enlightened views on race: “I’m a Christian and my Christian beliefs are you don’t do interracial marriage. That’s the way I was brought up and that’s the way I believe,” he said. “I have black friends, I hired black people. But when it comes to all this stuff you see on TV, when you see blacks and whites together, it makes my blood boil because that’s just not the way a Christian is supposed to live.” YIKES… Sounds like Hoschton has a loooooong way to go when it comes to race. Located just outside Gwinnett County, in Jackson County, adjacent to the larger city of Braselton, Hoschton has a population of less than 2,000 people and only 201 of that number identify as non-white according to U.S. Census data. Hoschton’s city code reads: “There shall be no discrimination exercised because of race, national origin, color, religion, creed, age, sex … All personnel actions shall be based solely on individual merit and fitness.” Looks like the code is a long way from being followed.

Rachel Held Evans, a very popular Christian author whose interesting work went against traditional conservative beliefs, passed away early Saturday morning after a lengthy hospitalization. She was 37 years old. The tragic news was shared and confirmed by husband Dan, who told fans on his wife’s website that Rachel was “slowly weaned from” her medically induced coma after experiencing massive brain swelling. This condition proved, ultimately, to be “not survivable.” “This entire experience is surreal. I keep hoping it’s a nightmare from which I’ll awake. I feel like I’m telling someone else’s story,” Dan wrote, prior to thanking his Rachel’s friends, family members and followers for their continued prayers and support: “I cannot express how much the support means to me and our kids. “To everyone who has prayed, called, texted, driven, flown, given of themselves physically and financially to help ease this burden: Thank you. “We are privileged. Rachel’s presence in this world was a gift to us all and her work will long survive her.” A Dayton, Tennesee native, Rachel penned such best-selling books as “Searching for Sunday” and “Faith Unraveled.” Other well-known works included ”A Year of Biblical Womanhood” and “Inspired,” as her website said Evans wrote about “faith, doubt and life in the Bible Belt.” She often challenged the evangelical community by addressing sexism and racism and “championing voices of people who have been marginalized in the church,” including the LGBTQ community, said Sarah Bessey, a writer and friend of Rachel’s. This turned the author into a hero to many readers and a polarizing presence in the religious community to her critics. Evans was in the hospital for about three weeks prior to her passing. On April 14, she announced on Twitter that she was in the hospital “with a flu + UTI combo” and had also contracted a “severe allergic reaction to the antibiotics” she had been given. At the time, the wroter lamented that she wouldn’t be able to watch the Game of Thrones final season premiere live that evening. Several days later, on April 19, it was clear that something was seriously wrong. This is when Dan delivered his first update on his wife’s health, writing that while she was receiving treatment for an infection, Rachel started “exhibiting unexpected symptoms,” which included “constant seizures.” Evans made headlines when she explained in a blog post that she left the evangelical church in 2014 to focus on building a new church community that would accept women as ministers, gay Christians and “those who refuse to choose between their intellectual integrity and their faith.” This was considered a novel concept at the time. He still is, in the eyes of many. Evans also served on President Barack Obama’s Advisory Council on Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships. She spoke at churches, conferences and universities around the country. On April 28, two days after Evans had been transported to another facility, her husband updated fans once again. He said that doctors were working to “find a combination of medicines” that would allow her to be slowly “weaned from the coma medication.” Two days after this, Dan shared that physicians had begun the process of bringing Evans out of her coma… … and that was the last we heard from him, until he announced that his wife had died. Evans is survived by her husband, as well as their two young children: a three-year son and a daughter, who will turn 1 later this month. She was surrounded by her loved ones when she passed away. May Rachel Held Evans rest in peace. View Slideshow: Celebrities Who Died in 2019: In Memoriam

An Akron, Ohio, mom claims that her two daughters were kicked out of their private Christian school, some 30 days before summer break, all because she is unmarried. According to WKYC , Summer Grant’s daughters Summara and Summaia, who were fourth and second graders, had gone to Chapel Hill Christian School for years until last Friday. Apparently, an administrator banned her children because he believes she is “living in sin.” “He said it was many reasons and the main one was because I was not married and my children had different fathers,” Grant said. That, and Grant has receipts—she recorded the conversation. “There’s 10 commandments and committing adultery is not part of that,” Pastor Wilson can be heard saying on tape. “It’s not that they should not go to the school it’s that they can’t go to the school.” Grant also told WKYC that her daughters are model students, winning multiple awards and having good grades. And despite an incident on the bus last week, where one her daughters didn’t sit up front when the driver told her to, the children have no real history of disciplinary issues. She claims the Pastor even told her his decision to expel her daughters had nothing to do with that particular incident. “It’s not right. It’s not right,” Grant stressed, adding, “As Christian you are not supposed to judge. You shouldn’t have affected these kids education over that.” This isn’t the first time Pastor Wilson has confronted Grant about her personal life. She claims over the summer he asked why she had three children with three different men. He also had the audacity to give her a list of eight things she needs to do to improve her life. “It wasn’t about whether they had their scholarship in place,” Grant tearfully told the Akron Beacon Journal . “It was more or less about me just not living right. … It was an uncomfortable conversation, but I sat through it because I really wanted my children to go to the school.” Pastor Wilson declined to go on camera with WKYC, but in a statement, he explained that parents were required to sign a written agreement to reflect a commitment to Christ and the Grant family acted in a manner “inconsistent” with the agreement. In his eyes, the “dismissal was necessary in order to protect the safety of our school children and their families.” In the meantime, Grant says her girls have no school to finish the year out right now. “They don’t have a school,” she said. They don’t have anywhere to go to school right now. I don’t know what to do.” When it comes to next year, she’s not sure if its worth fighting to have her kids back to Chapel Hill Christian School next fall where, “they’re honestly not welcome in.” Last week on Facebook, Grant thanked everyone who had sent her kind words and tried to help her find a new school for her girls. In the end, she just doesn’t want anyone to judge her daughters for her own life decisions. “I really want to thank everyone for any kind words shares messages calls or referrals! This situation has really put me in a bind mentally!!! I can say I’ve done some “not so ok things” in my life,” the mother wrote. Adding, Done some things I probably shouldn’t have but I don’t want to be judged as a bad person! N I especially don’t want my kids to be judged for my actions.” RELATED NEWS: Prosecutors Say South Carolina 5th Grader Died Of Natural Causes, Not From Fight Christian School Apologizes After Teacher Wore Blackface During African History Lesson [WATCH] Empowering Video Of Mother Singing Song To Bullied Son Goes Viral [ione_media_gallery src=”https://hellobeautiful.com” id=”2848104″ overlay=”true”]

Jinger Duggar may be moving to Los Angeles , but the reality star has made it very clear on Instagram: Her heart will always be in Arkansas. Specifically, it will always be with the two people who raised her and taught her every life lesson: parents Michelle and Jim Bob Duggar. Jinger and husband Jeremy Vuolo, of course, moved away from many of the former’s family members years ago and have been residing in Laredo, Texas. However, they confirmed to People Magazine several days ago that yet another move was on the horizon. “In recent days, God has made it overwhelmingly clear to us that he is leading us out of Laredo,” the couple told this publication in an interview, elaborating as follows: “Through much prayer and counsel, the next step for our family is to relocate to Los Angeles to attend Grace Community Church as Jeremy pursues graduate studies at The Master’s Seminary.” Labeling the decision to relocate as one of the “hardest things we’ve ever done,” the couple asked fans for prayers and said they will become California residents in July. Now, ahead of this major life change, Jinger has taken a moment to look back. She has shared a photo of herself being kissed on the cheeks by Jim Bob and Michelle and published an affiliated caption that showers praise on both her mother and her father. “Dear Dad & Mom, I want to take a moment to express my deep love and gratitude for you,” she writes to open this message, adding: “You two have impacted my life in ways that will forever be imprinted upon my heart. You not only taught us kids what it means to be a Christian but exemplified it by your daily walk with Christ. “Your training was one not merely of words, but of actions.” This note is notable because Jinger has clashed at times with her conservative parents. She has famously worn pants in the past . She waited an entire year after marriage to get pregnant. And now she’s moving to the liberal bastion of Los Angeles, sparking talk that mom and dad have disowned their daughter . So it’s safe to assume this open letter is Jinger’s attempt to get back on Jim Bob and Michelle’s good side. Continues the mother of one in it: “Truly there is no greater emphasis that you could’ve instilled in us kids, than that of love for God and others. Your constant care for both our physical and spiritual needs is but a small example of our Heavenly Father’s love and nurturing care for His children.” Neither Jim Bob nor Michelle has spoken on Jinger and Jeremy’s impending move. We can’t imagine they are too thrilled over it. But perhaps they are taking solace in their daughter’s seemingly heartfelt conclusion, which reads: I am so grateful to God for the gift of such godly parents and role models as you. May the Lord grant both Jeremy & me the grace to raise our sweet Felicity with that same nurturing care and devotion.. I love you both dearly! Your grateful daughter , Jinge. How sweet, right? Now, if you’ll excuse Jinger, she has to go make sure her husband isn’t banging other women like he wants to . View Slideshow: Duggar Courtships Keep Getting Shorter: Is Jim Bob Concerned?
