16 Suggested Song Titles For the Ill-Advised American Psycho Musical

Christmas arrived early for fans of both Bret Easton Ellis and musicals this morning via the announcement that the author’s 1991 novel American Psycho — which was memorably adapted into a feature film starring Christian Bale — is being transformed again, this time into musical form. In celebration of this news — and in hopes that it avoids the same disastrous Broadway fate as Spiderman — Movieline suggests a few song titles that composer Duncan Sheik (“Spring Awakening”) will hopefully consider for the first draft, which is expected next year.

‘The Vice Guide To Everything’ Goes Everywhere, Because No One Else Does

Vice co-founder Shane Smith and company bring their worldwide adventures to MTV Monday at 11 p.m. ET. By James Montgomery “The Vice Guide To Everything” co-founder Shane Smith Photo: MTV News Over the past year, “The Vice Guide to Everything” stars Ryan Duffy, Thomas Morton and Shane Smith have spent quality time with Yemeni rebels, Palestinian car thieves and Russian mobsters … to name just a few. And they did it basically because no one else will. “Well, I think journalism has changed … there was a time we actually believed what the news told us,” Smith, co-founder of Vice, the magazine and burgeoning media conglomerate that proudly goes places others won’t (both literally and physically), told MTV News. “And I think after the last two wars, where mainstream media was completely co-opted by the government and, in its own admission, failed in what it was supposed to do, that young people got totally disenfranchised … and because mainstream news media failed its job, people like us had to come and fill the vacuum.” And on Monday (December 6) at 11 p.m. ET, Smith and his cohorts will begin fighting that good fight on MTV, with the premiere of “The Vice Guide to Everything,” a 30-minute, wholly irreverent, oft eye-opening look at people and places that the mainstream media wouldn’t dare cover, let alone spend time with. Armed with only cameras, the occasional translator and the odd “fixer” (basically a local hired to ensure they’re not killed) these three went there, and came back with some incredible stories. “I was most scared in Yemen, when we were shooting with the rebels and the Houthis and tribal leaders who have death warrants on their head,” Smith explained. “The secret police arrested us, took all of our stuff, and we had all these cards of every rebel leader that the government wanted to kill … so the guy who helped us out there actually had to bribe the secret police to give us the tapes so we could wipe them … then we were able to get out.” “[There were] these car thieves in the West Bank that, because of all the restrictions on trade — importing car parts, specifically — if you want a car in Palestine, you basically pay some guy, he sneaks into Israel, he steals a car, brings it back and nobody finds you,” Morton added. “And we were hanging out with these guys who basically do that for a living, and … we steal a car together, and then a day later, he and a couple of his goon buddies showed up and tried to shake us down. The problem was they only spoke Arabic, our field producer spoke a little bit of Arabic, but we were basically relying on a translator for them to shake us down. And it was the most dragged-out event on the planet. … It just kept going for so long that, by the end of it, everybody was visibly bored with the proceedings, and they gave up.” And despite the near-death experiences, the “Vice” crew said that their show isn’t about pushing the boundaries just for the thrill of it (though, certainly, that plays a part). It’s to tell compelling stories and introduce American viewers to the kinds of things that go on every single day, no matter how hard the news networks try to ignore them. “[It’s] not that we’re Walter Cronkite or anything, but that whole era is over,” Smith said. “So, I think one of the things we do is we just show a story that resonates with people … and that’s what we’re trying to do with this show, which you should watch, Mondays at 11.” “The Vice Guide to Everything” airs Mondays at 11 p.m. ET on MTV.

Justin Timberlake Injury Delays Filming On Sci-Fi Thriller ‘Now’

The movie will be on hiatus until singer/actor’s muscle injury heals. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Timberlake (file) Photo: Christian Petersen/ Getty Images Last week, Justin Timberlake was spotted on crutches after sustaining an injury on the set of his sci-fi thriller “Now.” And now, more details are emerging about what happened to the singer/actor when he attempted to do his own stunts on the set of the Amanda Seyfried and Olivia Wilde co-starring flick. Sources say they “heard a pop” in Timberlake’s leg, and E! News confirmed that Timberlake’s injury has temporarily shut down production on the film. A rep for the studio said in a statement, “Justin Timberlake sustained a muscle injury to his calf on the set of Andrew Niccol’s thriller ‘Now.’ Production has taken a brief hiatus and will resume shortly.” A set source told the website that the shutdown should last about two weeks. “He hasn’t heard anything about the MRI results,” the source added. “But they’re freezing production until he’s off crutches and able to act again.” Timberlake was spotted at the Arclight theater in Hollywood for a “Social Network” Q&A session last Thursday, and he seemed to be having trouble walking. The session took place shortly after he was injured. Timberlake has been making waves as an actor as of late thanks to his roles in “The Social Network” and “Friends With Benefits,” which also features Mila Kunis and Emma Stone. “I gotta tell you, breaking up with Justin Timberlake is really fun,” Stone recently told MTV News . “It’s a feel-good time. He’s such a nice, funny guy. It was really fun. We had a good time.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . Katy Perry Thick Uterus and Caked-On Face of the Day

Katy Perry is dressed like a trophy. A horrible, caked-on make-up to cover her acne scars trophy. With a sloppy looking body trophy no one wants. I don’t get how she is already muff-gunted even though she hasn’t even had kids in her fake publicity stunt marriage. I am totally uninterested in her. She’s a talentless hag and she’s fooled her way into celebrity by getting titty fucked and suckin’ dick, typical Christian girl behavior, but I find the whole thing fucking boring. I just wanted to put that out there.

UN General Assembly Votes To Allow Gays To Be Executed Without Cause | The New Civil Rights Movement

Gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people were once again subject to the whims of homophobia and religious and cultural extremism this week, thanks to a United Nations vote that removed “sexual orientation” from a resolution that protects people from arbitrary executions. In other words, the UN General Assembly this week voted to allow LGBT people to be executed without cause. According to the International Gay and Lesbians Human Rights Commission, the UN General Assembly’s Third Committee on Social, Cultural and Humanitarian issues removed “sexual orientation” from a resolution addressing extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions this past week in a vote that was overwhelming represented by a majority of African, Middle East and Carribean nations. For a UN committee that addresses human rights questions that affect people all over the world, by removing protections for LGBT persons from a category of arbitrary executions, belies the objective and purpose of a committee whose focus this year is “on the examination of human rights questions,” according to its website. A number of LGBT human rights advocates were surprised by the decidedly lop-sided vote, including Mark Bromley, the chair of the Council on Global Equality, a Washington, D.C. based organization that brings together human rights organizations, LGBT groups, philanthropists and corporate leaders to ”encourage a clearer and stronger American voice on human rights concerns impacting LGBT communities around the world.” “I was very surprised by the vote,” said Bromley, who had been in contact with the United States Mission to the United Nations delegation all day Tuesday, who were trying to beat back efforts to strip sexual orientation from the resolution. But because the U.S. supports capital punishment, they usually abstain from voting on this resolution, thus they are in a weakened position with one arm tied behind their backs, according to Bromley. “But that said, the State Department did everything possible to beat back the efforts to repeal protections for LGBT persons,” he added. For further analysis into this story, read Tanya Domi’s latest piece at The New Civil Rights Movement, “UN Vote Allowing Gays To Be Executed Result Of Political, Religious Fundamentalism.” The U.K. gay rights and human rights campaigner Peter Tatchell said, “This is a shameful day in United Nations history. It gives a de facto green light to the on-going murder of LGBT people by homophobic regimes, death squads and vigilantes. They will take comfort from the fact that the UN does not endorse the protection of LGBT people against hate-motivated murder. “The UN vote is in direct defiance of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which guarantees equal treatment, non-discrimination and the right to life. What is the point of the UN if it refuses to uphold its own humanitarian values and declarations? “This vote is partly the result of a disturbing homophobic alliance between mostly African and Arab states, often inspired by religious fundamentalism. LGBT people in these countries frequently suffer severe persecution.” In an issued statement explaining the U.S. vote, a representative of the U.S. UN delegation said, At the outset, let me say that the United States strongly agrees with and appreciates the cosponsors’ efforts to retain language specifically condemning ESAs [extrajudicial, summary, or arbitrary executions] targeting vulnerable groups, particularly members of the LGBT community, and we were dismayed that this reference could not survive an unfriendly amendment. Bromley expressed great disappointment in losing all the Southern African countries on the vote, including Angola, Botswana, Mozambique, Nambia and South Africa, the latter, whose domestic laws and record on LGBT civil rights have held great regard throughout the world. Nonetheless, according to Bromley, from the days of former President Thabo Mbeki through present day leader Jacob Zuma, South Africa has been recalcitrant in its opposition to extending human rights to LGBT persons within international legal structures. Another region that unanimously supported the removal of sexual orientation from the resolution were the Carribean nations. Most noteworthy was the support from the Bahamas, Cuba, Haiti and Jamaica. Bromley indicated that the U.S. and human rights groups in the hemisphere have opportunities to forcefully advance LGBT rights through the Organization of American States (OAS) and Inter-American Commission on Human Rights. Brazil and Uruguay are international leaders on LGBT rights and can play a constructive role in bringing Carribean nations into the OAS fold on these issues, according to Bromley. Middle East countries that principally observe the Muslim religion and its practices, as well as countries whose politics are dominated by Christian fundamentalists, generally oppose LGBT and women’s rights at the UN. Even the United States has yet to ratify the Convention on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW). Indeed, CEDAW has the most “reservations” filed by the most member states of any international human rights convention on record. A reservation is a statement made by a State which it purports to exclude or alter the legal effect of certain provisions of a treaty in their application. According to the Office of the UN High Commissioner of Human Rights, A reservation may enable a State to participate in a multilateral treaty in which it would otherwise be unable or unwilling to do so. States can make reservations to a treaty when they sign, ratify, accept, approve or accede to it. When a State makes a reservation upon signing, it must confirm the reservation upon ratification, acceptance or approval…a reservation cannot be contrary to the object and purpose of the treaty. As an LGBT activist or an observer of UN and international politics, it is important for interested persons to understand that religion and culture play a major role in persuading internal bodies to not extend certain human rights to LGBT persons and women on religious and cultural grounds. These dynamics have created an international debate between advocates of “cultural relativism“–those who assert primacy of cultural values over human rights and those who are “ universalists,” who believe rights trump cultural concerns. The United States Mission to the United Nations has an explanation of the U.S.’s vote. Editor’s note: Thanks to Andr

Is C Street Winning?: Orders Given To Arrest Gays In Kenya

Prime Minister Raila Oldinga ordered a nationwide crackdown on gays in Kenya. He ordered police to arrest anyone engaging in homosexual behavior. Oldinga states, “We will not tolerate such behaviours in the country. The constitution is very clear on this issue and men or women found engaging in homosexuality will not be spared.” The anti-progress premier went on to say that, “Any man found engaging in sexual activities with another man should be arrested. Even women found engaging in sexual activities will be arrested.” In October, media sources began publishing pictures of gays in Uganda. The headlines read, “100 Pictures of Uganda’s Top Homos Leak.” Slapped next to the headline was a banner reading “Hang Them.” Sine those headlines ran, 4 Ugandans have been attacked while others fled in hiding. Today in Kenya at a public rally the Prime Minister recalled the ratio of men to women being equal population wise, then pondered why their people should engage in homosexual activity. C Street must be gleefully applauding this. Examiner.com: > C Street politics: The Christian mafia is advocating the death penalty for > homosexuals in Uganda. Tyranny is coming to the United States- Rollback of First Amendment Rights?

An RT crew was recently arrested by US police while filming protests near the Fort Benning military base in the US state of Georgia. Correspondent Kaelyn Forde’s and her cameraman Jon Conway were detained while covering a rally protesting the School of the Americas. They were arrested after the demonstration was over and everybody, including correspondents, was leaving the area. The arrests were rough and included the use of hard plastic hand cuffs, the same type commonly used by US soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan, injuring Kaelyn Forde’s wrists. At the time of their arrests the correspondents were not told what crime they were being charged with. They were held as protestors even though they presented valid press credentials to the court. Currently out on bail after 32 hours in custody, Forde and Conway were eventually charged with partaking in an illegal protest and disobeying the orders of law enforcement officers. Davis Swanson, author of the newly released book, “War is a Lie” said this case is a disturbing trend in America, and the constitutional rights of both the press and the activists were violated by the police. He explained the rights of a free press and free assembly seem to be thrown out when it comes to coverage of the US government, military, congressional campaigns and political parties. “There is the freedom of assembly as well as the freedom of the press in our First Amendment, and it is being attacked,” Swanson said. “This is something that has been growing in recent years.” There is a growing police presence at peaceful rallies and events, explained Swanson. Police are increasing their efforts and hostility at non-violent rallies. The event was a Christian protest, made up of activists that included priests, nuns, elderly individuals and minors. “It is a growing problem that ought to concern all of us,” he said. Swanson argued there was no justification for the police to violate the people’s first amendment rights. Increasing arrests, hostility and preemptive targeting of activists is unjust. “There seems to be a crack down on people protesting even as the protests diminish in size,” he added. The US military targets the media. The uses intimidation and releases tailored stories to the media, and most US media simply bend to the power and intimidation of the government, Swanson argued. “We have a campaign of intimidation that is very very successful,” he said. “There are two disgraceful things that happened here. One,an arrest of journalists and activists, and two, most US media outlets not there, not risking arrests, complying withthe desires of those in power or successfully intimidated.” Radio host Alex Jones said the arrests are a frightening sign and an attempt by the government to further curb American freedoms. Having been arrested in the past as a member of the press, Jones said Forde’s story is all too familiar. First, the police force you to move, and then move you again, and when you comply they arrest you anyway, he explained. “This is part of an ongoing program to persecute protestors and the press,” he said. “Now they’re trying to pass legislation where the Justice Department can shut down any website they want without a judge or jury. Tyranny is coming to the United States.” “This is really US tactics that are increasingly used against journalist around the world now coming back here to the United States,” she said. “We’ve seen time and again in war zones the journalists who are independent journalists who are targeted and then it’s labeled an accident. So, some o those same tactics come back here in an effort to shut down peaceful protests which is entirely legal, this was a permitted demonstration, and yet both the demonstrators and members of the media who were covering it were arrested for no reason whatsoever except an act of intimidation. Flounders argued that the military and the media are tied to one another. Thus US media rarely covers these events. She contended that the roll of the US media is shaped by the government, both in content and in how stories are covered. Blogger David Lindorff from ThisCantBeHappening.net argued police are using peaceful protests to study and intimidate activists. added by: MotherForTruth

A Very New York Times Thanksgiving: An Interfaith Service ‘Transcending’ Christianity for Woody Guthrie

Thanksgiving may have begun in America as a Christian event, but The New York Times is much fonder of an event that “transcends” that persnickety Jesus-is-the-way-and-the-truth Christianity and celebrates the vaguely Unitarian left. Longtime Times reporter Peter Applebome championed an event in Pleasantville, New York in his “Our Towns” column on Monday : Maybe it took a country-and-western rabbi to put together the interfaith Thanksgiving service that ended Sunday with Christians, Jews, Muslims and Buddhists singing “This Land Is Your Land” along with Woody Guthrie's daughter, Nora Guthrie. Rabbi Mark Sameth of the local synagogue (who told Applebome that “George Jones is God”) and Rev. Stephen Phillips, the local Methodist minister, put together the interfaith hootenanny, but don’t call it liberal. Just call it… “off-center.” read more
