CBS’s Schieffer Interviews Eric Holder, Ignores Black Panther Case

While devoting all of Sunday’s Face the Nation to an interview with Attorney General Eric Holder, CBS host Bob Schieffer failed to ask a single question about the Obama Justice Department dropping a voter intimidation case against the Black Panthers or allegations that the department has adopted a policy of ignoring such cases. Schieffer discussed a range of topics with Holder, from the federal lawsuit against Arizona’s immigration law, to a potential criminal investigation into BP, to the trial of terrorist Khalid Shaik Muhammed and closing Guantanamo Bay. At the end of the interview, Schieffer even asked about Holder’s infamous comment that the United States was a “nation of cowards” when it came to discussing race. However, the Face the Nation host failed to use that comment as a transition to the Black Panthers case, despite the fact that former DOJ attorney Christian Adams recently testified before the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights, accusing the department of adopting a policy of refusing to pursue voter intimidation cases that involved black defendants and white victims. On Holder’s “nation of cowards” comment, Schieffer asked: “A lot of people criticized you for that. A lot of people applauded you for saying that. Are you sorry now that you said that or what exactly did you mean by that and how do you feel today after some time has passed?” Holder responded: “I was trying to say in that speech is that we should be honest with one another…we ought to have the strength of character to say that which we really feel….To just have an open, honest dialogue about something that I think for too long we have not been willing to discuss.” Schieffer wondered: “Do you see any sign that we are doing better on that?” Holder remarked: “I think the fact that we have an African American as president, perhaps an African American as an attorney general, is a spur in that regard.” Here is transcript of the July 11 exchange between Schieffer and Holder on that topic: 10:51AM BOB SCHIEFFER: You know, early on in the administration, you created quite a stir when you said in a speech that we’ve become a ‘nation of cowards’ because we weren’t talking enough about race. A lot of people criticized you for that. A lot of people applauded you for saying that. Are you sorry now that you said that or what exactly did you mean by that and how do you feel today after some time has passed? ERIC HOLDER: You know, I think that this is – ours is a great nation, but one of the great things that we have always tried to – we’ve always wrestled with, from the inception of this nation, is the question of race. If one looks at the history of this country in the 19th century, race was, I think, the dominant issue. Look at the history of this country in the 20th century, race was one of the dominant issues. It remains an issue that, I think, still divides us. And if you look at the demographic changes this nation is about to undergo, we have to have, I believe, an open and honest discussion about race, ethnicity, the diversity that we are about to see, an unprecedented diversity in this country, can be a great source of strength for this nation, but if not dealt with appropriately, can also be something that is very divisive. And what I was trying to say in that speech is that we should be honest with one another and not feel that we have to retreat into our cocoons and only say that which we consider to be safe, that we ought to have the strength of character to say that which we really feel and people who are receiving it should understand that those things are said in good faith. To just have an open, honest dialogue about something that I think for too long we have not been willing to discuss. SCHIEFFER: Do you see any sign that we are doing better on that? HOLDER: Well, slightly. I think certainly that speech that I gave generated some conversation. I’m not sure I heard all the applause that you were talking about with regard to those remarks. I think perhaps we are getting to a place where – a better place. I think the fact that we have an African American as president, perhaps an African American as an attorney general, is a spur in that regard. But I think there’s still a lack of desire. And understandable, I think, in some ways. People feel uncomfortable talking about racial issues out of fear that if they express things, they will be characterized in a way that’s not fair. I think that there is still a need for a dialogue about things racial that we’ve not engaged in. SCHIEFFER: Mr. Attorney General, thank you for being with us in Aspen. HOLDER: Thank you.

Open Thread: DOJ Attacks Former Employee Over New Black Panthers

The Eric Holder-led Department of Justice is now resorting to attacks against its former employee Christian Adams after he’s come out publicly criticizing its decision to refuse to prosecute the New Black Panther Party under voter intimidation laws. Adams is fighting back , however: I was appalled and disappointed by the DOJ yesterday. They included a blatant lie in their response to my interview.  They told Fox News I had been “unhappy with my position.” Not only would this be a personnel matter they aren’t supposed to discuss, it’s a fairy tale. In fact on April 28 I got a promotion, so maybe they can let me know what position I was unhappy with. The problem with smearing me is that there are many others who know the truth inside the Department. Documents which they refuse to turn over pursuant to subpoenas from the Civil Rights Commission prove it. Testimony from other DOJ employees, which they refuse to allow, would also prove it. Will he get the support he needs from his former colleagues or will the issue get ignored and swept under the rug?

American Atheist Editor: Christian Daycare is ‘Child Abuse’

“He’s got the whole world in his hands?” To one atheist, it’s more like ‘He’s got the whole world under his thumb.” David Smalley, the editor of American Atheist magazine and a self-described “civil rights activist,” wrote in a  personal blog post June 7  that Christian daycare “a form of child abuse.” “In short, by starting your child off in a Christian environment, you are heading them down a path of forced ignorance,” Smalley wrote. “At least let your child begin in a secular world, and if he or she chooses Christianity after an age of accountability, then so be it. But forcing them to learn things as fact that you don’t even know to be true is a form of child abuse: inducing psychosis with thoughts of good and evil watching over them, as if they are constantly being graded or evaluated.” Smalley further stereotyped and generalized religion-based childcare by suggesting “it’s bad for positive self-esteem, and slows social development later in life.” American Atheist magazine is published by American Atheists, which calls itself “the premiere organization laboring for the civil liberties of Atheists, and the total, absolute separation of government and religion.” Smalley’s post appeared on his blog, Dogma Debate. He also hosts an Internet radio show of the same name.

The Joy of Christian Sex Toys

Joy Wilson went looking for something to spice up her marriage without compromising her Christian beliefs. Finding nothing, she founded her own “sin-free” sex toy business. Book22.com caters to the Christian community with books, toys and occasional advice. The name refers to the Song of Solomon, the extended love poem that forms the 22nd book of the Bible. Wilson says that after the birth of her first child, she had trouble rekindling her desire for intimacy. She and her husband went looking for marital aids, and found that Internet searches for products as tame as massage oil led to sites with pornographic images. “I was really surprised that it was that bad,” she says. She and her husband talked it over and decided that there must be a way for conservative people to add a spark to their romantic lives. She says their site steers clear of certain types of sexual activity that they believe are unholy. And they carefully consider which new products to add. “We pray about things before we add them to our site,” she says. “We live our lives very openly in front of Jesus, so we just kind of pray for direction about which way he would have us go, and I have to be honest with you — he's really surprised us. … Almost our whole entire 'special order' page has come about from that.” Wilson says she and her husband are blessed with good health, but that God has shown them that other couples might need help from a particular toy http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=18975616 added by: Stoneyroad

Palestine’s Speed Sisters on track for race equality

All-female, British-backed driving team line up alongside men for debut in Ramallah event When Suna Aweidah pulls on her red overalls and slips behind the wheel of her car next Friday, she will empty her mind of everything but the race ahead. But there will be an indelible nugget of pride that she and her team, the Speed Sisters, are breaking through the traditional conservatism of Palestinian society to compete in a motor racing event on an equal basis with men. As she eases her Opel Corsa on to the Ramallah race track, she will block out the yells of “Suna , yallah!” (Let’s go!), and focus on the map of the course she has memorised and the techniques she has learned at the hands of British instructors. “When I’m racing, I feel freedom. I love speed. When I’m on the track I can break the rules,” she says. The Speed Sisters comprise eight women, aged 18 to 39, Muslim and Christian, and are starting to grab attention, practical backing and the adoration of the crowds on what is unsurprisingly a male-dominated motor racing circuit. Friday’s race, the biggest that the female racers have participated in, will be their first both as a team and since undergoing two days of intensive training in the West Bank by two British instructors. Men and women compete on an equal basis but, Aweidah says, the men have more expensive, modified cars giving them an advantage. Aweidah now has a dedicated car in which to race, but for years relied on the loan of spare vehicles from a local supportive car rental firm, Dallah. And a supporter has donated an old BMW for team training and racing. The women have the backing of the British consulate in East Jerusalem, which has invested about £6,500 in suits, helmets, training and revamping the BMW. “They aren’t just a positive role model for women, but for all Palestinians,” said consulate spokeswoman Karen McLuskie. “They are really inspiring in a conflict zone where fun is low on the priority list.” For team captain Aweidah, Friday’s race will be the high point – so far – of her struggle to fulfil her ambition to be a racing driver. She has wanted to be behind a wheel since she was a girl watching ordinary drivers in her home town of Beit Hanina in East Jerusalem. “I love driving. I love cars. It’s in my blood – it’s stronger than me,” she says. When the Palestinian Motor Sport Federation was established in 2005, Aweidah hoped to be able to participate in races. But her family was reluctant. A year later she was invited to a women-only go-kart competition in Sharm el Sheikh, Egypt. “I told my family, I insist on going. We have no go-karts in the West Bank, I had only ever seen a picture of one. I had no idea how to drive one, or what the rules were.” Aweidah came sixth in a field of 18. Her family grew more supportive. Her first race in the West Bank was in 2006. To her astonishment, she found two other women participating. “The men racers found it strange, but they said OK, let them come. After a while they saw how we drive, that we proved ourselves, and they were OK. We started asking them for tips on driving – like when to use the handbrake.” Most of her friends were supportive. “Some said we’re proud of you because you do what we can’t. Some of my married friends would like to race but their husbands won’t allow it. But some women said this is a man’s sport.” With the British consulate’s encouragement, the female drivers finally formed a team. British trainers and former competitors Helen Elstrop and Sue Sanders spent last weekend, courtesy of the consulate, building on the women’s basic driving skills and mental preparation for racing. “The strength of character they’ve shown, not only on the track but in their lives in general, is phenomenal,” says Elstrop. She was surprised to discover how positive and supportive the “boys” were. “They want to see the girls compete at a higher level.” The women, she says, were “like sponges” in the training sessions. “They are astounding, a phenomenal set of girls. We are definitely sisters in speed.” The youngest of the team is Marah Zahalka, 18, a business student at Bir Zeit University whose mother is a driving instructor. Another team-member, Mona Ennab, 24, is supported at races by her mother and aunts dressed in traditional Palestinian dress. Betty Saadeh, 29, comes from a racing family: her father was a rally champion in Mexico and her brother was the 2009 autocross champion in the West Bank. Aweidah – who lives with her parents and two of her siblings, and works for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency – says the success and acceptance of the Speed Sisters is an indication of progress in Palestinian society. “It’s getting easier for Palestinian women to do the things they want, not only in sport but in all life. Palestinian women are proving themselves more and more.” She hopes one day to be able to represent Palestine in competitions abroad. “And to have our own state here so we could invite other countries to compete with us.” But for now, she is focusing on next Friday, and where that might lead. “We’re on the first step still but – inshallah – we will reach the stars.” Palestinian territories Gender Motor sport Harriet Sherwood guardian.co.uk

Tim Howard Turns Tourette’s from Challenge Into Advantage

Watch Tim Howard as he glides with acrobatic grace through the crosshairs, making whiplash saves and reading the ball as if it were a child’s book. He is generally so clear-headed, so cool in the heat of all that mayhem, and when the match is over, when the anxiety that rivals running through traffic has simmered, Howard bolts for the locker room and inhales peace. It’s not exactly fair to say soccer saved Howard, because the bubble that nurtures him is ripe with his Christian faith, his family and an extended athletic Rolodex that stretches from North Brunswick, N.J., where he was raised, to the cathedrals of the English Premier League, where his airborne feats have tweaked the perception of the United States as a country not quite ready for the beautiful game. Howard is the 31-year-old goaltender who Friday will be the last line of defense for the U.S. national team in a World Cup Group C game against tiny Slovenia. He also happens to have Tourette Syndrome (TS), a condition that these days is far less worrisome than the bruised ribs that have been screaming ever since an English player slammed into Howard cleats-first, at full speed, in a collision during last Saturday’s match.

‘Harry Potter’ Stars Impressed By Theme Park’s ‘Total Immersion’ Experience

‘It’s not even odd,’ Daniel Radcliffe says of seeing the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. By Terri Schwartz The cast of “Harry Potter” at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter opening Wednesday Photo: Gustavo Caballero/ Getty Images ORLANDO, Florida — Magic was seemingly everywhere on Wednesday night, at Universal Orlando’s grand opening celebration for the Wizarding World of Harry Potter . The theme park doesn’t officially open to the public until June 18, but Universal brought in the stars of the film and conductor/composer John Williams to kick things off with a bang. Though many of the stars of the “Harry Potter” films have come to see the park over the past several months, Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, Tom Felton, James and Oliver Phelps, Bonnie Wright, Matthew Lewis and Warwick Davis were given a special tour of Wizarding World’s many attractions on Wednesday so they would be primed to speak about them. “It’s not even odd,” Radcliffe said about seeing the world he spent the past decade working on in film represented as a real place in hot and humid Orlando. “It’s absolutely fantastic. I couldn’t be more impressed.” There was some debate amongst them as to which of the three rides in Wizarding World was the best. Radcliffe and Grint said the twin roller coasters in Dragon Challenge were their favorite, while Lewis, Wright and the Phelps loved Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey . And there was an even divide over which was better: regular or frozen Butterbeer . The stars seemed most impressed by the amount of detail making Hogwarts and Hogsmeade come to life, creating an experience they couldn’t even have on the movie set. “It’s just total immersion into the world,” Lewis said. “In 100 years, it’s still going to be here. It’s a little weird for me.” “It’s kind of the beginning and ending. It’s kind of surreal,” Wright said of the park’s opening coinciding with the end of filming of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” earlier this week. “All the little memories we have, now other people can have them as well.” The actors said they loved the rides, which include two roller coasters (Flight of the Hippogriffs and Dragon Challenge) and a visual experience (Forbidden Journey). It was the first roller-coaster ride for Davis. Grint shared that his coaster-riding technique was to hold on for dear life, while Felton said that he keeps his hands in the air, screaming for his life. Radcliffe had a very specific procedure: Make sure the harness is extra tight; try to keep his eyes open for as long as possible, and make the longest, most prolonged scream possible. When he gets off, his experience isn’t complete unless all his hair is swept to one side. Though she did not speak to the press and was kept well hidden at the event, “Harry Potter” author J.K. Rowling did make an appearance at the grand opening. Williams conducted the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra in a special presentation of the various themes he had written for the “Harry Potter” film series. In the end, the stars seemed to think Universal had left no magical stone unturned in the creation of the Wizarding World. All of them, that is, except Warwick Davis. When asked what he thinks Universal should add to the park, he responded, “Something involving Professor Flitwick. Or Griphook the goblin, perhaps.” Are you planning to go to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter? Tell us what you’re excited to see in the comments. Christina Aguilera To Sing At NBA Finals Tonight

Singer will perform the national anthem for the second time during the NBA basketball championship series. By Mawuse Ziegbe Christina Aguilera performs the national anthem before game six of the NBA finals on Tuesday Photo: Christian Petersen/Getty Images Christina Aguilera is once again using her formidable pipes to grace the NBA finals: The singer will belt out a rendition of “The Star Spangled Banner” at tonight’s seventh and final game of the series. The singer, whose latest album Bionic recently debuted at #3 , on the Billboard albums chart, sang at Game 6 at Los Angeles’ Staples Center on Tuesday (June 15) before the Lakers defeated the Boston Celtics and tied the series. The Lakers — who have lost their last four game-seven matchups to the Celtics — are apparently hoping Aguilera will bring them similar good luck tonight. The singer may be hoping that the Lakers are a good luck charm for her, as she’s had a some rough luck over the past few weeks . Bionic ‘s first-week sales were softer than expected, she recently postponed her tour until next year, and the response to her sexed-up video for the album’s first single, “Not Myself Tonight,” has been mixed. “I don’t know if it’s because she went away for a while, or because she tried to do something different with this project, but it feels a little crass and calculated,” Entertainment Weekly ‘s Leah Greenblatt told MTV News. “From her choice of collaborators [The-Dream, Polow Da Don, Le Tigre] to her first single, it doesn’t feel fully organic. What’s missing so much with her this time out is that, while she can still sing the crap out of her songs, you don’t get a sense of vulnerability, or even really know who she is.” Related Photos The Evolution Of: Christina Aguilera Related Artists Christina Aguilera

Robert Pattinson Dishes on Eclipse Make Out Scenes, Twihards

If you listen to tabloid rumors, Robert Pattinson has either dumped Kristen Stewart or is about to be dumped by Kristen Stewart. But if you listed to this Twilight Saga star himself, well, you won’t hear anything at all about his real-life relationship. Still, Parade was able to get Robert to open up about kissing Kristen – in Eclipse , at least. Check out the following excerpts from Pattinson’s recent interview with that publication: On Edward/Bella lip locks : “Kissing felt a little bit more natural in Eclipse , even if there was plenty of it. In New Moon and Twilight it was always like, ‘Oh, I’m gonna kill you if I kiss you’ or something. It was always kind of odd. But, in this one, they both understand their situation a lot more, which makes it easier. It’s the first time Kristen and I have been able to just act like a normal couple.” On Edward wanting to wait : “Nowadays, everyone just goes around screwing everyone for no reason. Edward doesn’t really want to sort of cheapen his relationship with Bella, even though she’s pushing him to go all the way. He’s got this certain idea of how it should go with the love of his life. He wants to do it right and not just follow his base instincts. I guess I’m a bit old fashioned in that way as well.” So… are he and Kristen dating? “I guess people like stories, that’s my basic conclusion. They just want everything in our lives to be like Twilight. The truth is… that I wish I had a few more hours of sleep today so I could think of a better answer.” On dealing with Twihards : “I kind of made the transition in my head of not being freaked out by it… when it happens so often to you, you kind of actually look at people’s faces and see that they’re enjoying themselves, and it makes everything so much easier to accept. Everything becomes a lot easier.” Pattinson also appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno this week. He had a couple of hilarious interactions with Emma Roberts, which you can watch now in our Robert video section . Enjoy!
