50 Shades of Grey Movie: Will it Suck? Or Totally Not?

The upcoming Fifty Shades of Grey film is getting all sorts of hype … which it can’t possibly live up to. Could this movie possibly be any good at all? Given the popularity of EL James’ novels, there’s no reason why a 50 Shades film couldn’t win over general audiences and make money … in theory. The only problem with a Fifty Shades of Grey movie is … the Fifty Shades of Grey book. What has made it so successful simply may not translate. “The only way to make it into a crowd-pleasing film is to pretty much tear everything out of the book,” says author/screenwriter Christopher Farnsworth. “Those movies don’t historically make a lot of money. Studios don’t want to make R-rated films. They want more PG films that a lot of people can see.” Many believe Fifty Shades would be better suited to an HBO show, which, regardless of who plays Christian and Ana , could drag out its racy content for years. Of course, if the budget for this film is small enough, and the buzz strong enough, an R rating doesn’t have to stand in the way of a long-term profit. Especially if the flick sticks with the book’s main thematic elements, which, when you strip away all the sex, is basically glorified Twilight fan fiction. “It’s the classic big love story … the powerful man who plucks out a seemingly ordinary woman, and makes her feel special,” romance author Beatriz Williams says. “That’s emotional crack for women. We’re hardwired to love this stuff.” Indeed … but will you pay to see the 50 Shades movie? Vote!

Who’s Willing to Pay Big Bucks for Scalped Dark Knight Rises Tickets?

With a number of The Dark Knight Rises midnight screenings sold out across the country, you might be out of luck snagging a coveted opening night ticket at certain theaters. But who’s willing to pay as much as $120 for a single TDKR IMAX ticket just to be among the first to catch the Batman outing this summer? ScreenCrush reports on the recent rise in scalped offerings for Christopher Nolan’s latest: “Tickets to the midnight IMAX screenings are popping up on eBay and Craigslist for over $100; at times an almost 80% markup…A few ‘entrepreneurs’ are even selling groups of seats for $500.” Silly spending or essential expense? Sound off, Batfans. [ ScreenCrush ]

The Dark Knight Rises — To IMAX, Or Not to IMAX?

July 20 is the summer’s most anticipated date for Bat-fans, but if you haven’t yet pre-ordered for The Dark Knight Rises you might want to hop on the IMAX train and snag your ticket before too long. Why? With over an hour of footage shot with IMAX technology, Chris Nolan’s trilogy-ender is set to blow minds in the larger format. And that could make the IMAX experience worthwhile. Personally, I’m not an IMAX diehard (same goes for 3-D — obviously — though that can be done well on occasion). When it comes to Nolan and Wally Pfister’s meticulously crafted movies, however, color me interested in watching a movie in the intended format. With TDKR , I find I’m willing to spend a little more and get to the theater early enough to snag one of the dozen or so prime seats in the theater that don’t make me want to gouge my eyes out. (Seriously, have you ever been stuck in the nightmarish peripheral edge seats of an IMAX theater?) Of course, TDKR is pretty much the exception for me, though watching Tom Cruise scale the Burj Khalifa and whatnot was a thrill; I won’t go IMAX if I can help it otherwise. Who needs the headache, both literal and figurative? I’m hoping that The Dark Knight Rises will live up to the hype — Tom Hardy’s Bane already promises to be a hulking, monstrous entity leaping off the screen even without being the size of a building. The folks at IMAX want to make sure you don’t forget that Nolan & Co. went to the trouble of filming an hour of Batman’s last outing in IMAX (full press release follows). So who else is sold on Bat-MAX? Or The Hobbit in 48 fps ? Hell, Douglas Trumbull wants us to watch movies on giant screens at 120 fps, projected more brightly than ever before . By comparison, IMAX seems like an utterly conventional next step in movie-watching. Los Angeles, CA – June 11, 2012 – Tickets are now on sale for the IMAX release of The Dark Knight Rises, the third film of the critically acclaimed trilogy that introduces Gotham City’s newest super villains, Bane and leading lady Selina Kyle. Director Christopher Nolan’s highly-anticipated epic conclusion hits IMAX theatres worldwide day-and-date with the traditional release on July 20. While making the 2008 blockbuster The Dark Knight, Christopher Nolan was the first filmmaker to use IMAX® cameras in a major motion picture release. Nolan employed the extremely high-resolution cameras even more extensively on The Dark Knight Rises: The IMAX Experience® —including the film’s prologue — incorporating a record of more than an hour of footage filmed with IMAX cameras. These specific sequences, which will expand to fill the entire screen exclusively in IMAX, will deliver unprecedented crispness and clarity and a truly immersive experience for moviegoers. “Director Christopher Nolan, Producers Emma Thomas and Chuck Roven, and Cinematographer Wally Pfister’s cinematic vision is unparalleled and continues to set the bar for excellence,” said Greg Foster, Chairman and President of IMAX Filmed Entertainment. “They are long-term partners and we’re happy to team with them and our friends at Warner Bros. to offer IMAX fans an opportunity to experience this highly-anticipated conclusion to the Batman trilogy the way it was meant to be seen – in IMAX theatres.” Sequences shot in 35mm have been digitally re-mastered into the image and sound quality of The IMAX Experience® with proprietary IMAX DMR® (Digital Re-mastering) technology. The crystal-clear images coupled with IMAX’s customized theatre geometry and powerful digital audio create a unique environment that will make audiences feel as if they are in the movie. Leading an all-star international cast, Oscar® winner Christian Bale (“The Fighter”) again plays the dual role of Bruce Wayne/Batman. The film also stars Anne Hathaway, as Selina Kyle; Tom Hardy, as Bane; Oscar® winner Marion Cotillard (“La Vie en Rose”), as Miranda Tate; and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, as John Blake. Returning to the main cast, Oscar® winner Michael Caine (“The Cider House Rules”) plays Alfred; Gary Oldman is Commissioner Gordon; and Oscar® winner Morgan Freeman (“Million Dollar Baby”) reprises the role of Lucius Fox. Ironically Named Jamaican Drug Lord Gets 23 Years In Prison

New York has been dishing out legal fades and edge ups to several drug kingpins in the past few weeks. The latest in the parade of yayo dons to get time in the slammer is Jamaican drug lord Christopher M. Coke, a notorious dealer whose manhunt led to a staggering 70-plus deaths in his native Jamaica. Earlier today, a federal judge in Manhattan dropped the gavel and gave the unfortunately named Coke 23 years in racketeering charges, reports the New York Times. Read The Rest At HipHopWired.com

‘True Blood’ Season Five: The Reviews Are In!

Critics agree the show is worthy summer entertainment but find the plot lacking focus. By Fallon Prinzivalli Stephen Moyer, Alexander Skarsgard and Lucy Griffiths in season five of “True Blood” Photo: Lacey Terrell/ HBO Our favorite fantastical creatures from Bon Temps return Sunday night (June 10) with the season-five premiere of HBO’s “True Blood.” The previous season left off with Sookie professing love for both Eric and Bill while ultimately choosing herself over either lover. Alcide uncovered a giant hole in a cement parking lot, leading us to believe we haven’t heard the last of Russell Edgington. And in the final sequence before the credits, Debbie meant to unload a round of lead into Sookie, but Tara jumped in the way and had half her head blown off. Along with hopefully revealing whether Sookie’s BFF survived the blast or not, the latest season brings vampire authority in the form of “Law and Order: SVU” star Christopher Meloni, who comes to restore order in the blood-sucking community. Here’s what critics are saying about the season’s opener. The Story “The first four episodes of Season 5 recently sent out to critics reflect what’s wrong with the most recent seasons of the HBO drama: they lack focus. The plot, which is based in part on Charlaine Harris’s novels, zigzags in so many different directions that it often seems as though there are no less than 10 separate television shows existing side by side within ‘True Blood.’ While the early seasons of the show wisely focused on a few main characters … the show’s success at creating vivid and engaging supporting characters has also been its downfall. Rather than allow these characters to exist on the periphery where they might thrive, Alan Ball and his writing staff have forced them front and center, which means that each season now needs to incorporate storylines for the entire cast, which now numbers in the several dozen. The result is a jumble of unrelated storylines that lack cohesion and a strong throughline. (Last season gave us witches, disembodied spirits, shifters, shamans, and faeries, all vying for control of the story.) With almost every character off doing his or her own thing, there’s a distinct lack of unity in the narrative, something keenly felt in the haphazard and unsatisfying fourth season, and that feeling continues into Season 5.” — Jace Lacob, The Daily Beast The Authority “Five seasons ago, I publicly declared my undying hatred of all things ‘True Blood.’ … [But Season 5 has] added a new element that makes it something I can finally (I’m sorry) sink my teeth into. They’ve added politics as blood sport. Authority has come to town, boys and gargoyles. … On next week’s episode, the new Guardian, Roman, head of the Authority, is introduced and it’s none other than Christopher Meloni. We still have vamp SVUs, so he’s pledged to root out and bring the ‘Sanguinistas,’ who believe God created humans as a food source for vamps, to heel.” — Linda Stasi, New York Post Kristin Bauer van Straten’s Pam “As usual, Pam gets the best lines. When she enters Sookie’s blood-soaked kitchen to find Sookie killed Debbie Pelt in retaliation for shooting Tara, Pam observes, ‘Color me impressed. You know how to party.’ Later, after aiding Sookie’s efforts, Pam declares, ‘I’m wearing a Wal-Mart sweatshirt for you all. If that’s not a demonstration of team spirit, I don’t know what is.’ ” — Rob Owen, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette The Final Word, Pro-Con Style “As always on a show that tends to be messy in all senses of the word, plots and characters tumble into each other and sometimes threaten to push each other right off the screen. Immediately after tying up last year’s plot strings (by the end of the first hour, you’ll know the fate of Rutina Wesley’s Tara), ‘True’ launches into multiple new crises, led by the horrifying and welcome return of Denis O’Hare’s Russell Edgington. The stories are not all equal, but most more than carry their weight, and all are laced with both humor and the writer’s respect for dramatic consequences. Put them together, and you get summer TV at its witty, riveting best. Come on in; the ‘Blood’ is fine.” — Robert Bianco, USA Today “Silly doesn’t even begin to describe most of what goes on in the first few episodes, which include a veiled shout-out to former New Jersey Gov. Jim McGreevey, an enormous wink involving the folk standard ‘Turn! Turn! Turn!’ and, as always, an unruly number of subplots. And yet, like an addiction to free-range hemoglobin, there’s something undeniably compelling about the characters, human and otherwise, in a series whose plotting grows more twisted every year. It doesn’t hurt that this season’s new blood includes characters played by Christopher Meloni (‘Law & Order: SVU’) and Tina Majorino (‘Big Love’). But this is reportedly creator Alan Ball’s final year as showrunner, and if everything truly has a season, it might be time to think about putting a stake through ‘True Blood’ before it begins to seem more undead than alive.” — Ellen Gray, Philadelphia Daily News Related Videos MTV After Hours With Josh Horowitz
