REVIEW: Straw Dogs Remake Trades Edgy Complexity For Genre Schlock

As I’ve mentioned , I’ve never been the type to get hives over the remake announcements that seem to crop up in the trades every other day, or who feels that a bad redo can somehow denigrate its original. I understand that the idea of people associating The Wicker Man with Nicolas Cage karate kicking Leelee Sobieski into a wall instead of the 1973 Christopher Lee version can be a little painful, but overall what’s the harm, so long as the film at least tries to bring something interesting to the table?

What is Doc Brown — that is, Christopher Lloyd — advertising in this Argentinian commercial? (Or ‘Argentine.’ I’m never certain which is correct.) The spot features Doc appearing in the Back to the Future DeLorean, which promptly crashes into Garbarino [1], an electronics superstore. Is this a commercial for the store, or for the phone that Doc seems to be reaching for right at the end? The Game Off The Hook In ‘Flashcalling’ Incident

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department will not pursue charges. By Gil Kaufman The Game Photo: Moses Robinson/ WireImage The Game should be gearing up to finally release his long-awaited CD, The R.E.D. Album , but instead he appeared on CNN on Wednesday night to defend himself against charges that he interfered with police business at the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Last week, a message appeared on the West Coast rapper’s Twitter feed asking aspiring interns to ring the sheriff’s station in Compton, leading to a flood of calls that reportedly delayed emergency services . The sheriff’s department was considering filing criminal charges against the MC, but on Wednesday, CNN reported that authorities have decided not to pursue legal action after The Game apologized for the incident. Game (born Jayceon Taylor) made his mea culpa on Wednesday, saying the whole thing was a misunderstanding. “It was a simple mishap,” the rapper said. “I was doing a photo shoot, and it was downtown Los Angeles, and one of my boys picked up my phone and started tweeting random numbers,” he said, not naming the person who allegedly set off the incident. “Whenever his phone is laying around and my phone is laying around, we tweet from each other’s page. That’s what happened.” The sheriff’s department followed up with their own statement, in which they praised the one-time 50 Cent prot

Colbie Caillat Recalls Breaking Dad’s Grammy On ‘When I Was 17’

The season premiere of ‘When I Was 17,’ also featuring Bow Wow and Christopher Mintz-Passe, airs Saturday at 11 a.m. ET on MTV. By Nuzhat Naoreen Colbie Caillat on “When I Was 17” Photo: MTV Colbie Caillat knows the value of a Grammy: The singer/songwriter already has two to her name. But back when she was 17 years old, an out-of-control house party nearly destroyed one of her father’s own coveted awards. On the season premiere of “When I Was 17,” airing this Saturday at 11 a.m. ET, Caillat tells all about that night. “When I was 17, we used to have parties at my parents’ house all the time. This one time, hundreds and hundreds of people showed up at my house, and we thought it was really cool because it was like, ‘Oh my god, all these people came!’ ” Caillat recalls. The more people piled in though, the more difficult it became to keep the party under control. “Everyone was drinking way too much, and a huge fight broke out. It was just one of those crazy parties,” she says. “Different schools, no one got along. And this one guy jumped on my parents’ pool table and jumped off of it to tackle this other guy, which then they hit into the wall, and there was blood on the wall. And alcohol was spit on our pool table, the front door got broken, stuff got stolen.” The front door wasn’t the only thing that got broken though. “The worst part about it is that my dad’s Grammy was up above our TV, and during the party, it got knocked over and it fell on the ground and broke in half,” Caillat recalls. So, how did Caillat’s father react after he learned his trophy had been split in two? Tune into the premiere of “When I Was 17” to find out. “When I Was 17” — this week featuring Bow Wow, Christopher Mintz-Passe and Colbie Caillat — premieres Saturday at 11 a.m. ET on MTV. Bow Wow Recalls Driving Test Woes On ‘When I Was 17’

The season premiere of ‘When I Was 17,’ also featuring Christopher Mintz-Passe and Colbie Caillat, airs Saturday at 11 a.m. ET on MTV. By Nuzhat Naoreen Bow Wow on “When I Was 17” Photo: MTV At 17 years old, Bow Wow bought himself his first car — a Maserati — but that doesn’t mean he was able to drive it. On the season premiere of “When I Was 17” this Saturday at 11 a.m. ET, the hip-hop star recalls how his initial attempt at taking the driver’s license exam didn’t exactly go as planned. “When I was 17, it was time for me to step it up and walk in the DMV and go ahead and get my license,” Bow Wow says. “Walked in, sat at the computer, doing the test, doing the test. They start asking the feet: ‘How far do you have to stand behind the car?’ Now, this is killing my brain right now. The next thing you know, the computer tells me [to] go see the lady at the desk, and I’m thinking, ‘All right. I passed.’ ” Not quite. While Bow Wow, who at 17 already had a successful career with a couple of albums under his belt, felt confident he’d aced the exam, the results showed otherwise. “Went up there, was as arrogant as possible, like, ‘I’m ready. Where do I go take my picture at?’ ” he explains. “And the lady said, ‘No. You failed.’ I was like, ‘What?’ ” Bow Wow may have been surprised, but his mother was not. “I told him, ‘Bow, you have to study this driver’s book,’ ” his mother, Teresa, recalls. Of course, her son didn’t take the advice. “I was really hurt because that’s every 17-year-old’s dream is to get their license,” Bow Wow says. He didn’t give up, though. Bow Wow, who ended up purchasing the Maserati anyway after failing the test, tried again — and again. Find out how he finally managed to get behind the wheel on the season premiere of “When I Was 17.” “When I Was 17” — this week featuring Bow Wow, Christopher Mintz-Passe and Colbie Caillat — premieres Saturday at 11 a.m. ET on MTV. ‘Dark Knight Rises’: Batwing First Look!

Photos from the Pittsburgh set continue to reveal new bits of the Christopher Nolan flick. By Eric Ditzian The Batwing on the set of “Dark Knight Rises” Ultra-secretive “Dark Knight Rises” director Christopher Nolan has met his match in the city of Pittsburgh. The filmmaker is famous for keeping his actors on spoiler-dishing lockdown, with “Inception” star Joseph Gordon-Levitt once telling us how his boss “very specifically asked [him] not to talk about” the mind-bending thriller and Anne Hathaway joking about taking a blood oath not to reveal anything about her role of Catwoman. Check out photos of the Batwing on the set of “Dark Knight Rises”! But as “Rises” continues to shoot on location in Pittsburgh, almost every day brings a fresh batch of spoiler-filled photos and videos about the comic-book flick. The latest is the first glimpse of what appears to be the Batwing, the Caped Crusader’s signature aircraft. The aircraft appears to utilize fan-driven engines and be made of a series of interlocking plates, indicating that the ship may have some sort of shape-shifting quality. Such a transformational vehicle wouldn’t be out of place in Nolan’s Gotham City; in the “Dark Knight,” part of Batman’s Tumbler turned out to contain a hidden Batpod. A YouTube video from set shows the Batwing being driven down a street during the shoot, its massive body gyrating back and forth, a Batman dummy placed in the cockpit. In his many comic book, TV and film incarnations, Batman has long had an aerial vehicle. Tim Burton, in 1989’s “Batman,” introduced the idea of (and the name for) the Batwing. Nolan thus far has not delivered anything of the sort. “Dark Knight Rises,” however, seems to be utilizing a slew of vehicles for the film, from a bunch of camouflaged Tumblers to Hathaway’s Catwoman on the Batpod itself to this new aircraft. And while we know far more at this point about “Dark Knight Rises” than we ever could have expected, and certainly more than Nolan would likely prefer, there remains much we don’t know. Even what we have seen, Hathaway let MTV News know, doesn’t give everything away. “What I am happy to say is: If you didn’t like the photo,” she said of the first look at her in character as Catwoman , “you only see about a 10th of what that suit can do.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Dark Knight Rises.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com .
