Bishop Eddie Long’s Finances Put Under Microsope [VIDEO]

The rest is here:

Before Bishop Eddie Long came under fire for settling sexual abuse charges against him out of court when he vowed to fight them, Long’s finances were under scrutiny in a congressional investigation by Iowa Sen. Chuck Grassley. WSB-TV starting looking into Long’s assets more than six months ago. Now with his wife Vanessa filing for divorce, Long’s finances are under the microscope. WSB-TV found very little paperwork because the church and its dozens of affiliated companies file very few public documents. Records show Long’s assets have been intertwined with New Birth’s assets for years, including New Birth paying approximately $200,000 in property taxes for Long and $85,000 in taxes for his private plane. Long’s financial troubles appear to be mounting. In addition to the undisclosed financial settlement to five young men who accused him of sexual abuse last summer, records show Long has agreed to pay nearly $2 million to settle a defaulted bank loan, he owes $200,000 to a developer, and in October church members sued Long for over $1 million in failed investments sold by a man he endorsed. WSB-TV requested an interview with Long, but a spokesperson told reporter Jodie Fleischer the bishop was too busy. Johnny Keyser, Lauren Gray Wow ‘American Idol’ Panel

Reis Kloeckner, Ethan Jones and Rachelle Lamb also fly through to Hollywood. By Adam Graham Steven Tyler on “American Idol” Photo: FOX In popular music, St. Louis might be known as the home of Chuck Berry or Nelly, but in the world of “American Idol,” it’s the city that hosted Carrie Underwood’s audition. “Idol” returned to the Gateway to the West on Thursday (February 2), hoping to find the show’s next megastar. And they got off on the right foot with contestant Johnny Keyser, 22, from Pompano Beach, Florida, who blew the judges away with his rendition of Sam Cooke’s “A Change Is Gonna Come.” “Should we just vote now?” Steven Tyler asked only a few bars into the song. Keyser was quickly sped through to Hollywood and set a good tone for St. Louis. As did Lauren Gray, who works at her family’s one-stop wedding shop and sings in a wedding band with her father. Gray’s version of Adele’s “One and Only” left Jennifer Lopez’s mouth agape and had Randy Jackson calling her “fearless.” Lopez called her “one of the best female voices we’ve heard” and the three of them sent her on her way to Hollywood; later, when summing up the St. Louis auditions, Lopez said, “I have two words for today: Lauren Gray.” In all, 46 contestants were passed through to the Hollywood round. Among them was 20-year-old Reis Kloeckner, whose version of “Lean on Me” brought a tear to Tyler’s eye. “That was so beautiful. You made me cry. That’s how good that was just now,” Tyler said. Lopez and Jackson agreed and sent the pizza maker — whose name is pronounced “Reese” — through to the next round. Next up was 22-year-old Ethan Jones of Pontoon Beach, Illinois, a singer in a country band who belted out Edwin McCain’s “I’ll Be” and bled through his audition, due to a cut on his forehead he accidentally opened up while in the waiting room. (Seriously, no one had a Band-Aid?) Jones earned three yes votes from the judges and hopefully stopped bleeding somewhere on the way to Hollywood. Rachelle Lamb, meanwhile, joined Portland auditioner Britnee Kellogg by singing a song directed toward an ex who did her wrong. The 26-year-old construction worker sang Faith Hill’s “Dearly Beloved” (which she referred to as “Find Somebody New”) and earned a passing grade from the judges; maybe she and Kellogg can team up come Hollywood. With the audition phase now over — in voice-over, Ryan Seacrest called them “the most successful road auditions we’ve ever had” — the dreaded/ feared/ beloved Hollywood Week kicks off next week. What did you think of Thursday’s “Idol”? Were these “the most successful road auditions ever”? Let us know in the comments! ‘American Idol’ Season 11: Where Are The Bad Singers?

‘Idol’ has kept the predictably awful singers to a minimum so far, and we’re not sure that’s right. By Gil Kaufman Magic Cyclops auditions for “American Idol” in Aspen Photo: Michael Becker / FOX Like casual sports fans who can’t wait for the Winter Olympics to revel in the schadenfreude of watching world-class ice-skaters bite it, “American Idol” watchers have been conditioned to expect early audition episodes packed with a healthy mix of decent, great and truly awful singers. In fact, some eagle-eyed “Idol” observers will tell you that there is a whole legion of viewers out there who only tune in to the first few weeks to see the next William Hung , General Larry “Pants on the Ground” Platt or Keith “Like a Virgin” Beukelaer. But in keeping with the shiny-happy-people vibe “Idol” initiated last year in its first post-Simon Cowell season, through the four audition episodes so far, season 11 “Idol” has noticeably eased up on the so-bad-it’s-good factor. Instead, it has focused on mediocre or not laughably terrible singers, with a handful of decent ringers thrown in for good measure. Yes, we saw a man with a fake accent named Magic Cyclops crash and burn on Wednesday night not long after seemingly joke-worthy Angie Zeiderman performed “When You’ve Got It, Flaunt It” from “The Producers.” But she quickly turned it around and won over the judges with a good-enough take on Roy Orbison’s “Blue Bayou.” The bait-and-switch appears to be the new look for “Idol,” as evidenced by Ali Shields’ cringe-inducing rap/ghetto dance on Chris Brown’s “Look at Me Now,” followed by a more passable cover of Corinne Bailey Rae’s “Like a Star.” That kind of rope-a-dope may actually be worse than the plain-old “montage of mediocrity” of the past, because, at best, it’s dishonest, and at worst, it makes you wonder how low the talent bar is this season. The season so far seems to have traded chuckle-inducing singing for outright meanness, as evidenced by the mockery of African immigrant Mawuena Kodjo in the first episode, the sexist baiting of Bikini Girl 2.0 Jennifer Diley, the overly long, indulgent segment on not-that-interesting Ryan Seacrest look-alike Shaun Kraisman and the sniggering at twin Tealana Hedgespeth on Wednesday’s show. The latter seemed the most cruel. For a singer whose segment focused on her ego-denting struggle to emerge from the shadow of her multitalented sister, the snide asides from the judges at Hedgespeth’s expense just seemed heartless. At least in the past when Cowell called someone a “bush baby” or the judges fell off their chairs laughing, they mostly did their worst out in the open instead of stringing the singers along just to crush them after the audition. I know we’re barely two weeks into the cycle, but I won’t lie: I love the crash-and-burners. Watching a mind-blowingly horrendous singer (or three) in an audition episode with an equal amount of ear-catching talent is one of the thrills of “Idol.” It puts the variety in an audition cycle that is often a dull parade of same-y R&B takes on Stevie Wonder, Mariah Carey and Aretha Franklin. For the past couple of years, “Idol” producers have crowed about focusing on the talent rather than the freaks in the auditions episodes. But isn’t that what the rest of the season is for? What do you think about the lack of outrageously bad singers this year? Let us know in the comments! Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions.

Robert Pattinson Debuts Buzz Cut Accepting People’s Choice Award

‘Water for Elephants’ actor accepts Favorite Drama Movie award in button-up and jeans. By James Dinh Robert Pattinson wins Favorite Drama Movie at the 2012 People’s Choice Awards Photo: Getty Images Winning awards isn’t anything new to Robert Pattinson — especially for his role in the “Twilight” franchise. But fans saw the actor in a brand-new light at the 2012 People’s Choice Awards on Wednesday night (January 11) when he accepted an award for his film “Water for Elephants” and showed off his new buzz-cut hairdo. Pattinson appeared casually made his way to the stage in a simple button-up shirt and jeans to accept the Favorite Drama Movie award from Zachary Levi and “Twilight” co-star Ashley Greene. Even without his shaggy, long locks, Pattinson received a standing ovation. “Woah. Thank you very much. I don’t know why they asked me to accept it because it’s really a lot of other people as well,” he chuckled over an echo of screams from the audience. “When I was doing this movie, I was having so much fun doing it that I was saying to everyone I didn’t even care if anyone saw it. But now that people have seen it and they’re giving awards for it, I’m even more thankful for the whole experience, so thank you guys very much.” “Water for Elephants” beat out “The Adjustment Bureau,” “The Help,” “Limitless” and “Moneyball.” Now Pattinson’s love for “Elephants” isn’t exactly a secret. Shortly before it hit theaters last April, MTV News spoke with the box-office heartthrob about his appreciation for the film. “It felt like it was kind of magical in many ways, because we were out in the desert shooting,” he said. “There was nothing from the modern world around. It was a different experience for me. It wasn’t in a studio or anything.” What do you think of Robert’s buzz cut? Share your thoughts in the comments below! Taylor Kitsch Talks ‘All-Or-Nothing’ 2012

Roles in ‘Battleship,’ ‘John Carter’ and ‘Savages’ make the ‘Friday Night Lights’ alum one to watch in 2012. By Kevin P. Sullivan, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Taylor Kitsch in “John Carter” Photo: Disney Kids are growing up fast these days. One day, they’re playing fullback for the Dillon Panthers. Next thing you know, they’re saving Mars, selling weed and fighting aliens on a battleship. For Taylor Kitsch , 2012 is the year he grows up. A fan favorite from the “Friday Night Lights” television show, Kitsch makes the transition to full-on action star with “John Carter” and “Battleship.” If that weren’t enough, later in the year, he’ll star in “Savages,” a crime film helmed by one of Hollywood’s most formidable directors, Oliver Stone. And Kitsch knows exactly what he’s getting into: “It’s a pretty all-or-nothing year, right?” “All-or-nothing” is about as close as you can get to properly describing the year Kitsch has in front of him. Aside from starring in “FNL” creator Peter Berg’s next film, “Battleship,” Kitsch is smack-dab in the middle of Disney’s big-budget sci-fi epic “John Carter.” When it comes down to it, the fate of “John Carter” may rest firmly on Kitsch’s abs. “Of course, there’s the physicality,” said Kitsch, explaining his revealing wardrobe, comprised mostly of a glorified loincloth. “You’re pretty out there, not going to lie.” Kitsch insisted that the fashion choices never bothered him because it was true to the character. “It felt right, so it wasn’t such a big deal,” he said. Despite the film’s special effects and high budget, Kitsch said there is something much deeper to this story of a transported Civil War captain. “There’s kind of that stigma with big movies that it’s just action,” Kitsch said. “But with this, it’s really just the core of this guy and his journey of reinventing himself and finding himself again.” With such a full plate, Kitsch said he feels a whole mix of emotions, both good and bad. “I think it’s a bit of everything,” he said. “I’m excited. I’m nervous, but I’m also super proud of it, and I can’t wait to show. Especially from ‘John Carter’ to ‘Battleship’ to ‘Savages,’ that’s such a different landscape of a character.” It’s not just you, Taylor. We’re excited too. What are you waiting for? Your must-see movie needs your support. It’s time to show character, poise and heart. Vote for your picks now at MTV Movie Brawl 2012 !
