Google Changes Name to Topeka

Go to the Google homepage, and see if you can spot something out of common. Yes, the Google logo has changed. That’s because Google has announced on its Official Google Blog that the company has officially changed its name and it’s now called Topeka. It’s all true. As a matter of fact, the company asks to use the term Google to refer to the Kansas city that changed its name from Topeka to Google last month in order to earn the right to be one of the cities where Google Topeka will experiment its 1Gbps fiber optic service. Google, Kansas served as inspiration for the rebranding of the company. Google/Topeka explains on its blog post that both the company and the city have many things in common, therefore it’s an honor to have switched names. The Mountain View based company is completely serious [wink] about the rebranding that it has even changed all sings on the Googleplex, which we’re guessing is called the Topekaplex now, from Google to Topeka. Google Topeka says that the decision was not an easy one. For instance, there are certain things that will change from now on. The company states that there might even be some consequences and even disruptions. added by: UrbanGypsy

Why Google Is Now Topeka

The search engine continues its proud tradition of April Fools’ Day jokes. By Eric Ditzian Topeka Photo: Google Early-morning Web surfers woke up Thursday (April 1) to a strange sight: Google was no longer Google, but a multicolored search engine called Topeka. Say what? Oh, Google, you and your Internet hoaxes! Following in a long line of elaborate pranks, Google decided that for April Fools’ Day , the company would change its name to Topeka, brand equity be damned. The purported name change followed an actual March decision from the town of Topeka, Kansas, which declared its intention to change its name to Google in a bid to become one of the cities in which the company plans to build high-speed broadband networks. On the first day of April, Google repaid the compliment. “We’ve been wondering ever since how best to honor that moving gesture,” the company announced on its official blog . “Today we are pleased to announce that as of 1 a.m. (Central Daylight Time) April 1st, Google has officially changed our name to Topeka.” The hoax is merely the latest for a company that prides itself on a having a sense of humor and famously trumpeted its founding edict: “Don’t be evil.” For April Fools’ Day 2006, the company announced the launch of Google Romance , a send-up of online dating services. A year earlier, Google proudly revealed its intention to sell a line of “smart drinks” to “maximize your surfing efficiency.” In 2004, the search company started advertising for jobs located on the moon . In its most recent announcement, of course, Google gave no indication that the name change was anything less than a verified fact. The decision to switch to Topeka, it seemed, had not been made lightly. “Google employees once known as ‘Googlers’ should now be referred to as either ‘Topekers’ or ‘Topekans,’ depending on the result of a board meeting that’s ongoing at this hour,” read the company’s blog post. “Whatever the outcome, the conclusion is clear: We aren’t in Google anymore.”

Glee Live! In Concert! Tour Dates Announced

The cast of ‘Glee’ will go on seven-date trek in May. By Jocelyn Vena Jenna Ushkowitz, Chris Colfer, Kevin McHale, Amber Riley and Lea Michele on “Glee” Photo: Carin Baer/FOX Do you love “Glee”? Well, fans in Phoenix, New York, Chicago and Los Angeles will get the chance to see the cast onstage with Glee Live! In Concert! The show’s stars — including Lea Michele (Rachel), Cory Monteith (Finn), Amber Riley (Mercedes), Chris Colfer (Kurt), Mark Salling (Puck), Dianna Agron (Quinn), Jenna Ushkowitz (Tina) and Kevin McHale (Artie) — are set to sing live starting May 18 in Phoenix, before wrapping up the seven-date trek in New York at Radio City Music Hall. The stars will sing show favorites like “Don’t Stop Believin’,” “Somebody to Love,” “Jump,” “Don’t Rain on My Parade” and “Sweet Caroline.” “The response of the fans to our little show has been so immediate and so gratifying, we wanted to get out and thank them live and in person,” show creator Ryan Murphy said. “And what show lends itself more to a concert than ‘Glee’? We can’t wait to take this show on the road, and the actors couldn’t be more excited to perform live for audiences in these four cities.” Michele, who has experience on the Broadway stage, added that the concert will be the best way to end the show’s first season: “This has been such an extraordinary year for ‘Glee,’ and I can’t think of a better way to finish up the first season than performing live onstage with the cast.” The show will be back April 13, with production on season two of the show set to begin shortly after their tour wraps. “This show has changed my life in so many ways,” Monteith said. “If you had told me a year ago that I’d be performing classic-rock songs in concert theaters around the country, I would never have believed you. We are psyched!” Before the stars hit the road, they are expected to perform at the White House Easter Egg Roll on Monday, April 5. Glee Live! In Concert! tour dates, according to Fox:

H&M & Walmart trashing unsold clothes that could be donated to charity

We just came upon some news that got us boiling mad – according to the New York Times, H&M and Walmart have been using box cutters and other sharp objects to slash and mutilate their unsold clothing stock (including brand new coats, jackets and shoes) to ribbons before stuffing it into trash bags and kicking it to the curb. If the Manhattan retailers’ wasteful behavior breaks your heart, imagine what it must feel like to hear about it as one of the New York City’s 16,000 homeless people desperately in need of a coat to keep them warm this winter. Why go through all of the trouble to destroy these perfectly wearable clothes when there are tons of people who could use them (literally right in front of the storefronts) and plenty of places that are more than willing to help organize and distribute them

E.P.A. announces strict new health standards for smog

WASHINGTON — The Environmental Protection Agency proposed a stricter new standard for smog-causing pollutants on Thursday that, if adopted, will impose large costs on industry and local governments but will also bring substantial health benefits to millions of Americans. The proposed standard would replace one set by the Bush administration in March 2008, which has been challenged in court by environmental advocates as too weak to adequately protect human health and the environment
