10,000 Californians Moon Amtrak

The southern Californian city of Laguna Niguel has been enjoying an annual ritual, in which locals and visitors bare their bottoms at passing trains. For 30 years, the city has hosted “Mooning Amtrak” as crowds line up along the railway tracks, dropping their trousers when a train passes by. Up to 10,000 people take part, and visitors are encouraged to leave their cars at home and arrive by train. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/world/us_and_canada/10588850.stm added by: ampersand

Bombers Kill At Least 50 In Attacks In Uganda Capital During Today’s World Cup Finals

Bombers Kill at Least 50 (Including Foreigners) in Attacks in Uganda Capital By JOSH KRON Published: July 11, 2010 KAMPALA, Uganda — At least three bombs exploded Sunday in a synchronized attack on large gatherings of World Cup soccer fans watching the televised final on outdoor screens in this normally peaceful capital, turning a boisterous night of cheering into scenes of death and panic. The police and witnesses said more than 50 people were killed including some foreigners, among them at least one American. Marc Hofer/Associated Press Photo: A man attended to an injured woman after a bomb went off in a restaurant in Kampala’s Kabalagala district on Sunday. People carried an injured man at the Mulago Hospital in Kampala on Sunday. The bombs struck at 10:30 p.m. local time in the middle of the match between Spain and the Netherlands under way in South Africa, hitting a popular Ethiopian garden restaurant and a large rugby field in a different Kampala neighborhood where hundreds of people had massed to watch the game. Ugandan police officials said they suspected that the Shabab, a militant Islamic group in nearby Somalia, might have been behind the bombings. If so, it would be that group’s first attack outside Somalia. But the police said it was premature to draw conclusions. “We can’t rule anything out,” said Kale Kayihura, Uganda’s police inspector general, at the scene of one of the attacks. “This was obviously terrorism, from the way it was targeted at World Cup watchers in public places.” Joan Lockard, a spokeswoman at the American Embassy in Kampala, confirmed that at least one American was killed. She did not identify the victim. Local journalists at a major hospital said an unidentified number of American citizens were among the wounded. The Shabab group, one of the more fearsome militias vying for power in Somalia, bans music, dancing and sports, has links to Al Qaeda and has repeatedly threatened targets in Uganda as well as in Burundi because both countries contribute to the African Union peacekeeping mission in Somalia, a lawless nation in the Horn of Africa. The police said other suspects were former rebels in the neighboring Democratic Republic of the Congo with connections to Uganda. The Ugandan capital is relatively safe and relaxed compared with other big cities in Africa, and such bombings are extremely rare. But the city turned tense and fearful early on Monday, as military vehicles and ambulances screeched through the streets and Kampala’s bars and discos emptied. At the Ethiopian restaurant that was attacked, an outdoor cafe with lawn tables known as the Ethiopian Village, soldiers and onlookers watched side by side as rescue crews extracted the dead and the wounded from the wreckage. The police said the bomb appeared to have been placed under a dining table where a group of foreigners, including some Americans, had been sitting. At least 15 people were killed in that blast, police officials witnesses said. “It was so loud,” said a woman named Mami, one of the owners of the restaurant, which had become popular with soccer fans because it showed the games on an outdoor screen. “I am so confused. My God. My God. My God.” At the rugby field where fans had gone to watch the final game on a large screen, police and witnesses said they counted at least 44 bodies. Lines of chairs had been blown apart. One middle-aged woman sat dead, her head hung back, blood dripping. “We were just watching football when the two bombs went off,” said Brian Bomakech, a Ugandan fan at the field. “So many people were hurt, so many people have died.” In Mogadishu, the Somalian capital, Sheik Yusuf Sheik Issa, a Shabab commander, was quoted by The Associated Press early Monday as saying he was happy with the attacks in Uganda. The sheik refused to confirm or deny any responsibility by the Shabab. “Uganda is one of our enemies,” The A.P. quoted him as saying. “Whatever makes them cry, makes us happy. May Allah’s anger be upon those who are against us.” The bombings came two days after another Shabab commander, Sheik Muktar Robow, called during Friday Prayer in Somalia for militants to attack sites in Uganda and Burundi. In Washington, a White House spokesman, Tommy Vietor, said late Sunday that the United States was prepared to provide assistance to Uganda. “The president is deeply saddened by the loss of life resulting from these deplorable and cowardly attacks, and sends his condolences to the people of Uganda and the loved ones of those who have been killed or injured,” he said. http://graphics8.nytimes.com/images/2010/07/12/world/12uganda1/12uganda1-hpMediu… added by: EthicalVegan

Doug E. Fresh Talks ‘Teach Me How To Dougie,’ Pharrell Collabo

‘I look at it as a blessing,’ he tells Mixtape Daily of the Cali Swag District dance craze. By Shaheem Reid, with additional reporting by Rahman Dukes Doug E. Fresh Photo: MTV News Cornerstone Credentials: Doug E. Fresh Doug E. Fresh has been exciting the crowds since he had a curly flattop and a Bally’s jacket — the man just doesn’t age. Not only does he remain a relevant performer 30 years later by touring around the globe all year ’round, but his younger peers are keeping his name on the radio by putting his moniker in their songs. Lil’ Wil dropped “My Dougie” — which, of course, is slang for being fresh — a couple of years ago, and in 2010, the youngsters have been all about the Cali Swag District dance anthem “Teach Me How to Dougie.” “I look at it as a blessing,” Fresh said about getting props from a younger generation of artists. “It surprises me too. I was talking about it yesterday with some of my friends. Every year, it seems to be another song, another thing with the dance or something. I always say, ‘Man, the Creator is preparing me for something. He’s keeping the sun on me for some reason. He’s keeping me aligned with that generation.’ Because I genuinely love people, I love hip-hop, and I love using it as a tool to communicate and to create a better vibration. Life is short. I guess I’m lined up for a reason. I’m coming up with new music, I’m in the best shape of my life, I’m real sharp, my energy is strong. I look at it as: I’m just following the energy. That’s how I sum that up.” Fresh is working on a slew of projects to keep up his momentum. “My sons, they go by the name of Square Off,” he said. “I enjoy helping. I have new music coming out. I’m working on some television shows. I still do a tremendous amount of concerts. I’m doing my restaurant. I got a club coming in New York. The restaurant is called Doug E. The club is called Fresh. It’s a lot of different things going on. I’m developing a couple of real-estate projects. I’m looking forward to doing things with different artists. Me and Pharrell are doings some things. Teddy Riley, Timbaland, probably me and Will.I.Am. It’s gonna be nice, man. It’s a blessing. I’m going to bring in different people who can enhance the energy I’m coming with. I don’t wanna bring in people for name recognition. I wanna get them because the energy lines up. There will probably be some new artists on the project. My sons Square Off, they’re gonna be on the project.” Fresh was out in the New Orleans during Fourth of July weekend for the Essence Music Festival , and he said the annual extravaganza is something he looks forward to every year. “Essence is something I always enjoy, because I love New Orleans,” the vet said. “Since they brought it back to New Orleans, it’s a special place to me. We been doing it since the beginning. We did it when it was in Houston, but there’s nothing like New Orleans. This year, it’s special. It’s a good vibe out here. I’m just glad to see so many of us get together for something positive. “I think the rebuilding of the city has to start with the spirit first,” Fresh added. “So the music, the vibe, the connection spiritually with the artists. Everybody out here is the main key. A lot of people are still in a lot of tough situations. My heart still goes out to the people of New Orleans. I still got a lot of love for the people who haven’t made it back to New Orleans. It’s a process. The first step is to spiritually line yourself up with good and doing greater things beyond yourself and helping brothers and sisters get themselves on their feet. Through us coming here, it creates jobs. It creates opportunities, and it brings money to the city. That doesn’t hurt. It helps.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines or follow the Mixtape Daily team on Twitter: @shaheemreid and @mongosladenyc .

Fat Joe Helps Bring Choice Players To The New York Knicks

‘It was a great experience,’ the MC says of bringing Amar’e Stoudemire to his hometown team, in Mixtape Daily. By Shaheem Reid Fat Joe Photo: MTV News Celebrity Favorites: Fat Joe New York, New York, we back! The New York Knicks gave their fans a healthy helping of hope on Monday when they came to contractual agreement with one of the top stars in the NBA, Amar’e Stoudemire. While in their pursuit of the former Phoenix Sun, the Knicks brass called on none other than a Big Apple King to help with the recruitment: Fat Joe. recently Joe posted a photo on Twitter featuring himself, Spike Lee, Stoudemire, Chris Rock, Knicks coach Mike D’Antoni and others. “I’m a New York Knick fan, die-hard!” Joe told us. “And we been losing for a long time — like, eight years or something. The Knicks organization called me and said, ‘Yo Joe, we’re trying to get Amar’e.’ By the way, he’s my favorite player, no hype! That’s who I wanted to come to New York. It’s been a long time since New York had a guy to dunk on people, pound his chest, go crazy. That’s my type of player. Hard body. So they was like, ‘Joe, we want you to call him up, start talking to him. Tell him to come to the city, tell him how beautiful the city is.’ ‘Mare, I’ve known him for years — since he came in the league as rookie.” Joe has also known Knicks owner James Dolan for many years — the leader of the Terror Squad said after the Knicks front office called, he put the full-court press on Stoudemire. “When I called [Amar’e], he was like, ‘Fat Joe.’ He already knew it was me,” Joe recalled. “I was like, ‘We need you, we need you!’ I did my greatest Khaled rendition ever created. ‘I gotta have you. You’re killing me, I’m gonna die. I need oxygen!’ He was like, ‘Joe calm down. It might happen. Calm down.’ It was a great experience.” Finally, after all the wooing and a $100 million contract offer, Stoudemire agreed to come play at Madison Square Garden for the upcoming season. His commitment was celebrated Monday night at a dinner in New York. “So then they called me up and said, ‘He’s gonna sign. We want you to come to the first meal,’ ” Joe recalled. “So after I came in there, it was small — Spike, Chris Rock, Allen Houston, John Starks, Carl Banks, [Michael] Strahan — then you had the coaches and the owners and Fat Joe representing that hip-hop side of things. It was an honor for me. I always remember when I used to go the Garden and I was in the nosebleeds — and Jordan and Ewing looked this small from up there. Now I sit on the woods. To have them call me and be like, ‘Joe, we need you to go in on Amar’e,’ it was an honor.” Joe’s headhunting isn’t done — he’s been talking to other NBA superstars in his own time to convince them to play in his hometown. “I can’t sleep,” Joe said of all the speculation over where top NBA free agents such as LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh will land. “I been talking to Carmelo [Anthony] since the Puerto Rican Day parade. I been hammering on his head like, ‘We need you.’ He loves the city. I was in France talking to Chris Paul and Tony Parker, like, ‘Yo, we need y’all to come.’ I’m going in. This is the most exciting time I ever experienced on a free-agency level. Just to know where LeBron is going. Carmelo said he might leave. Wade! Who’s coming to the Knicks? We lost the last three or four years with them telling us they was going to make big moves this summer. There’s been a lot of pressure on the Knicks organization to pull something off and they told me last night, ‘We’re not done, Joe.’ I’m like, ‘Please man, I got my guy Amar’e, but we need a team around him as well.’ ” James, Wade and Bosh are all free agents, free to sign with any NBA team. Their main suitors have been the Miami Heat, New Jersey Nets, Chicago Bulls and New York Knicks. Meanwhile, Anthony, Bosh and Parker are still under contract to their respective teams, but have been the subject of trades around the NBA rumor mill. Lady Gaga Plays Triumphant Homecoming Show At Madison Square Garden

‘Without New York, I would not exist,’ Gaga tells NYC fans Tuesday night. By Maura Johnston Lady Gaga performs in concert (file) Photo: Getty Images Before her hometown headlining debut at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday night (July 6), Lady Gaga tweeted a photo of herself standing in front of the New York arena’s marquee. The photo had no commentary except for the tag “#madisonsquaregaga,” and indeed, it seemed like she was on the verge of taking over the arena in the hours before she took the stage. Some fans were dressed as characters from her videos — the Diet Coke curlers from the “Telephone” clip were particularly popular — while others took her glammed-up aesthetic to the hilt, with glitter, elaborate eye makeup and giant hair bows ruling the night. The fashion statements were all the more impressive given the weather in New York, where temperatures soared past the 100-degree mark on Tuesday. Gaga’s Tuesday night concert was the first of three Monster Ball shows taking place this week in New York, which serves as the setting for the elaborately staged concert. During the course of her show, Gaga and her dancers veered all over the city, from the Lower East Side to the F train to Central Park. But it was obvious that Gaga was very aware that the fantasy world she’d created had been set up inside the arena where, as the young Stefani Germanotta, she took in quite a few performances by music’s biggest stars. “My name is Lady Gaga and I used to sit right over there, way far in the back and way up top,” she said at one point during the evening. She then reeled off a list of artists she’d seen during her past visits to the Garden — Madonna, Cher, the Rolling Stones, Elton John, Kiss. “I used to stare at this side of the room, and I used to think, ‘I’m gonna be up there,’ ” she continued. “Every second you watch me on this stage,” she told the crowd, “you remember, I was sitting where you are.” Later in the show, she dedicated a wrenching performance of “Speechless” to her father, who was in the audience. She recalled the days of him helping her carry a piano down four flights of stairs so she could bring it to shows in the early part of her career and said, while pitched over the piano, “Of all the drunk men in my life, Dad, you’re my favorite.” “Without New York, I would not exist,” Gaga then declared. “But I also would not exist without my friends,” she added, and after a lengthy rundown of the challenges she’d faced with the help of her pals she dedicated her new song “You and I” to them. Her performance of the rock-tinged track was full of passion, stretching into a near-epic where she pounded away on the piano. The obvious nods to New York sprinkled into the evening — both within the show and timed to tonight’s setting — only seemed to energize the crowd, and Gaga fed off the adulation. By the time the night came to a close, there was a triumphant feeling in the air. “We did it, little monsters,” she told the crowd after the night’s closing number, “Bad Romance.” “We made it to the Monster Ball! We made it to Madison Square Garden. “Thank you for making my dream come true,” she continued. “I love you so much.” What do you think of the Monster Ball Tour? Leave your reactions in the comments! NY Times Loses Its Distaste for Religion As Houston Churches Push Amnesty for Illegals

Last Friday, the New York Times continued its front-page hammering of Pope Benedict as sharing the blame for the scandalous child sex abuse cases brought against priests. On Tuesday, the Times led with a story on the alleged scandal of the United States giving tax breaks for donations to strengthen Jewish settlements in the West Bank that Obama doesn’t approve of. So when the paper suddenly starts showing deference to religion in politics, it’s a giveaway that a plea in aid of an unlabeled liberal cause will soon follow. The Times continues to push for amnesty for illegal immigration by providing gross overexposure to pro-illegal immigrant protests and marches that function as press releases for the pro-amnesty position. On Monday, Texas-based reporter James McKinley Jr. brought in “an unusual display of ecumenical solidarity.” ” Many Churches, One Plea — Houston’s Clergy United to Urge Support for Immigration Reform .” McKinley lets a minister ramble in Marxist fashion: The Rev. John W. Bowie knows it is hard to sell the people in his neighborhood on the idea that they should support changing immigration laws to give illegal immigrants a path to citizenship. His church lies in one of the oldest black settlements in the city, where unemployment is high and many people see immigrants as competitors for jobs. Yet there he was in the pulpit at True Light Missionary Baptist Church on the Fourth of July, with a full choir behind him, urging his flock to support an overhaul of immigration laws that “lets the undocumented come out of the shadows.” “All 13 colonies were made up of illegal aliens because they had not gotten permission from the residents here, who were the Indians,” he said. “Then a few years later, they brought us here and made us illegal, too. These immigrants, we immigrants, have built the greatest nation in the world, coming from everywhere, all over, because, you see, nobody owns this world except God.” All over Houston, in an unusual display of ecumenical solidarity on an explosive issue, scores of pastors, priests, rabbis and ministers used their sermons on Independence Day to promote the cause of fixing a broken immigration system. The coordinated effort was part of a broad-based campaign begun in January by an interfaith group, the Metropolitan Organization, to lobby Congress to pass an immigration overhaul package this year. The group has collected 12,000 signatures to be sent to lawmakers and has organized workshops to persuade churchgoers to support their effort. McKinley didn’t find any “liberals” on the pro-amnesty side, but managed to identify opponents of immigration “reform” as “conservative” and “right-wing.” Many clergy members say they face an uphill battle with their congregations, some of which tend to be conservative on social issues and regard immigrants without visas as lawbreakers. Their effort has also drawn fire from right-wing talk radio hosts.  McKinley also piled on the “right-wing politicians” and “conservative” labels in a slanted May story on the Texas governor’s race that will pit sitting Gov. Rick Perry against Democrat Bill White.
