REVIEW: Pattinson Is Quietly Marvelous In Cronenberg’s Admirable, Feverish Cosmopolis

Easier to admire than to love, David Cronenberg’s  Cosmopolis is an amplified, feverish vision of the one percent as scarcely human — not because of any innate maliciousness, but because they’re so removed from the lives of the masses. They’re like children who’ve already won a video game and now play carelessly, without any need to observe the rules. The lead role of 28-year-old billionaire Eric Packer is played by Robert Pattinson, although the star of the film is just as much Packer Capital’s high-tech stretch limousine, which serves as his mobile office as he inches across Manhattan in search of a haircut and, perhaps, his own destruction. That limo, equipped with glowing console panels, a slide-out urinal and what’s essentially a throne in the back, is the primary setting of  Cosmopolis.   It’s a hermetically sealed bubble in which Eric can glide through the roiling urban landscape, jumping off or taking on passengers at whim. He is in the city, but not a part of it. The vehicle is armored and, he explains to his aloof wife Elise (Sarah Gadon), “Prousted” — lined with cork soundproofing — though the latter gesture is, he admits, largely symbolic, as the New York noise manages to bleed through. Despite this, the barrier between him and the world is considerable, bolstered by watchful presence of his security chief Torval (Kevin Durand), who informs him tersely of any credible threats to his life. Cosmopolis  is based on the 2003 novel of the same name by Don DeLillo, but Cronenberg adapted the tale to the screen and it feels very much like a Cronenberg work. It’s the chilly sibling to  eXistenZ , without the comfort of slipping realities. If the universe of  Cosmopolis were to come loose, it would only reveal a void underneath. Pattinson does a quietly marvelous thing in finding vulnerability in Eric without making it seem like softness. The film depicts Eric’s financial kingdom (and with it his sense of self) crumbling over a day, but his breakdown is a gradual one. His panic rises in barely perceptible increments. Despite Torval’s warnings, Eric has set out to get a haircut, though he doesn’t seem to need one. (Pattinson begins the film looking like a character from The Matrix , pale and immaculate in his dark suit and sunglasses.) The city is in a state of intense gridlock thanks to a presidential visit, the funeral procession of a famous Sufi rapper and by anti-corporate protests that strikingly recall Occupy Wall Street, though instead of a tent the crowd’s chosen symbol is a giant rat. As the limo crawls along, Eric takes meetings with coworkers and employees who appear in his car as if beamed in: his partner Shiner (Jay Baruchel), his art consultant and lover Didi (Juliette Binoche), his finance chief Jane (Emily Hampshire) and his adviser Vija (Samantha Morton), with whom he sips vodka while calmly discussing the rioters outside rocking his limo and spray-painting anarchist symbols on it. “This is a protest against the future,” she says. Packer Capital is attempting to short the yuan, a gambit that is not going well and bleeding the company of vast amounts of money as the hours roll by. Eric is a big fat symbol — the film treats this fact with a wink — never more so than in scenes with his wife Elise (Sarah Gadon), who’s as much an enigma to him as he initially is to us. A poet from a massive wealthy family, she’s indifferent to the wealth he’s built and the position he’s achieved. She’s also apathetic to his more animal needs: Elise solemnly refuses to have sex with Eric because, she tells him, she needs to conserve her energy for work. Their connection is so tenuous and they know so little about each other that their marriage might as well be an arranged one between two royals. Cosmopolis is a film about the demeaning and dehumanizing effects of money, and Eric’s wealth has left him untethered. He can buy things or simply have them at will — security, sex, an appropriate spouse, maybe even the Rothko Chapel, which he wants to keep whole in his apartment — but few of these acquisitions seem to resonate with him. As a portrait of the far end of wealth,  Cosmopolis is hauntingly hollow, its world deliberately crammed with things but empty of meaning. It’s possible that Eric courts death — by intentionally putting himself in the way of a “credible threat” — because he’s losing his fortune, or maybe he set out to lose that fortune first as part of plan for complete self-destruction. Either way,  Cosmopolis presents a world of vivid and sometimes nightmarish imagery outside those tinted windows, and finds something elegiac and terrible in the detached way its characters process what they see. As Morton’s character says as she gazes at a protester who’s set himself on fire outside the limo: “It’s not original — it’s an appropriation.” Follow Alison Willmore on Twitter.   Follow Movieline on Twitter.

My name is Courtney and I am 13 years old. My Bieber experience…

My name is Courtney and I am 13 years old. My Bieber experience started on June 18, 2012. The day before, I heard that if you buy the Girlfriend perfume package at Macy’s in New York City, you get tickets to Justin’s secret concert that night . The next morning I went to school and then when I got home, my mom and I drove to pick up my cousin. Then we went to the train station and headed to NYC. Finally when we got to Penn Station, we ran to Macy’s and bought Girlfriend. We were so lucky because there was only 50 packages left! Gianna and I were so excited because we never saw Justin on concert before and we couldn’t get tickets to the Believe Tour. I also heard there was a Believe CD signing at J&R Music Store the next day and they were giving out wristbands that day if you pre-ordered Believe so of course we went.  When we finally got to J&R we ran downstairs to pre-order the CD and we got our bracelets! Gianna and I were freaking out because WE WERE GOING TO MEET JUSTIN DREW BIEBER THE NEXT DAY! After that we went to the concert and it was amazing even though it was extremely hot in the Apollo and the power went out. Justin sang about 10 songs including OLLG that he sang to little Avalanna. It was the cutest thing on earth! The next day I had another final exam so I  had to go to school before we went to the city. During the whole test I kept zoning out and thinking about meeting Justin. I was so excited! After school we went to pick up Gianna again and then went to the train. We got to J&R at about 2:45 and we were almost last on line! The people said it would be about a 3 hour wait but it was worth it! At 5:00 we were finally getting close to the front of the line! At one point everyone on the other side of the street that was on line started screaming so we looked around to see what was going on. It turned out to be that Ryan Good was walking past the line to go to Starbucks that was down the street! I couldn’t believe I saw him! When we got to that side of the street he walked back to the music store! He was so close to me, I could almost touch him! When we finally got inside the store I was really freaking out! We got up to the table and I put my CD down. Kenny was sitting down beside Justin. Gianna and I told Justin we loved him and he smiled at us! It was so amazing! After a few seconds we had to leave to keep the line moving. I couldn’t believe I just met Justin Drew Bieber!!!! After the signing, we went to Time Square near MTV because he was performing there next. We met other people we know there and waited for Justin to hopefully come outside. We were waiting there then all of the sudden Moshe walked pasted us! Of course we all followed him and he went into a sunglass store. My friends went inside and got his autograph but I went back to where we were waiting. After a few hours we were walking down the street and then we saw Dan Kanter and Scrappy! There was a bunch of fans surrounding them and asking for pictures and autographs. He almost left but I asked him for a picture really quickly and he took a picture with me! I was freaking out!!!!!! After a few hours we saw Justin left in a car with black tinted windows so I didn’t see his face but at least I met him that morning! I went home after that and I could hardly sleep that night! Thank you Justin! I never thought this would ever happen to me! It was one of the best days of my life! -@BeingABelieberr See more here: My name is Courtney and I am 13 years old. Robert Pattinson Emerges In NYC, Will Ring The NYSE Bell For Cosmopolis

Kicking off a media blitz of post-scandal promotion for David Cronenberg ‘s Cosmopolis , Robert Pattinson taped his first one-on-one interview with Jon Stewart tonight, hit the film’s NYC premiere, and is slated to appear Tuesday at the New York Stock Exchange to ring the Opening Bell . Folks familiar with the Don DeLillo book on which Cosmopolis is based, however, know that having financial prodigy/bored billionaire Eric Packer at the controls of America’s financial infrastructure would be, in fact, a terrible idea. But anyway! RPattz alert! Pattinson stars as Packer in Cronenberg’s Cosmopolis , which opens Friday in limited release and should prove an even more fascinating career milestone for the Twilight idol then previously thought, given girlfriend Kristen Stewart’s headline-grabbing dalliance with Snow White and the Huntsman director Rupert Sanders. Pattinson’s media tour, after weeks of hiding out in relative seclusion, also heralds his most thematically-ambitious, challenging project to date and will redefine how many mainstream critics and audiences perceive him. The RPattz tour began tonight at the film’s premiere in New York (see above picture of Pattinson in appropriate “I Will Survive” outfit) with an appearance on The Daily Show , which according to Tweets from folks in the audience like devoted Pattinson blogger @ tinkrbe1l3 , does cover the Stewart betrayal: There was a Freudian slip. I don't think Rob meant to say “it does” so quickly when Jon said something about these things ending ur world.— Tinker Bell (@tinkrbe1l3) August 13, 2012 Tomorrow morning at 9:30 am, Pattinson and Cronenberg will ring the NYSE bell, followed by a visit to Good Morning America and New York Times chat on Wednesday and a massive 30-minute sit-down with MTV on Thursday. In any case, it’s all good publicity for The Cronenberg, right? Middle America and the Twilight faithful, get ready to see RPattz like never before. You really probably are not at all ready for this jelly. Cosmopolis Synopsis: From director David Cronenberg (A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE, DEAD RINGERS, THE FLY, EASTERN PROMISES) and based on the prophetic novel by Don DeLillo, comes COSMOPOLIS, a contemporary thriller that turns into a wild, hypnotic odyssey through our new millennium’s obsessions with power, money, control, information, technology, violence, sex, mortality, revolution, destruction and ultimately, redemption. Unfolding in a single cataclysmic day, the story follows Eric Packer (Robert Pattinson) – a 28-year old financial whiz kid and billionaire asset manager – as he heads out in his tricked-out stretch limo to get a haircut from his father’s old barber, while remotely wagering his company’s massive fortune on a bet against the Chinese Yuan. Packer’s luxe trip across the city quickly becomes dizzyingly hellish as he encounters explosive city riots, a parade of provocative visitors, and is thrust into a myriad of intimate encounters. Having started the day with everything, believing he is the future, Packer’s perfectly ordered, doubt-free world is about to implode. Produced by Paulo Branco and Martin Katz, COSMOPOLIS also stars Juliette Binoche, Sarah Gadon, Mathieu Amalric, Jay Baruchel, Kevin Durand, K’Naan, Emily Hampshire with Samantha Morton and Paul Giamatti. COSMOPOLIS will be opening in New York at the Landmark Sunshine Cinema and the Elinor Bunin Munroe Film Center on August 17th. Follow Jen Yamato on Twitter . Follow Movieline on Twitter .

The Shade: Did Drake Fire Shots At Chris Brown’s Over His Struggling Album Sales In Aaliyah’s New Song “Enough Said”???

Looks like the Aubrey and Breezy fued is gonna be the hip-hop Hatfields and McCoys! Drake Appears To Diss Chris Brown In Aaliyah Song “Enough Said” Although a majority of the controversy surrounding Drake’s latest recording on a posthumous Aaliyah track was due to the word that he would be executive producing the deceased singer’s new album. Amongst the outrage it appears that Drizzy’s not-so-subliminal diss toward his rival light-skinned crooner/rapper Chris Brown was lost in the fray. The ever-emo Toronto rapper clearly spits: “Running through the city with n!**as I’d give a kidney/ Selling under 150 you n!**as got to be kidding/ Is this even still a discussion?/ Don’t you ever wake up disgusted?” For the record, Chris Brown’s latest long-player Fortune, only registered about 134,000 copies sold after numerous push-backs and delays. For another listen to the song click HERE Short of these two finally catching a good ol’ fashioned fade, we can’t see this situation ever coming to a resolution. As much Stan-like adoration respect as Aubrey has for Aaliyah, you would think that he would leave his lil’ beyotch-made disputes out of her music, but then again, emo is and emo does… Images via WENN Source

On the 17th of July I got up at 4am and got mum to drop me in…

On the 17th of July I got up at 4am and got mum to drop me in the city. I had no clue where I was going but Kyle and Jackie O said that Justin would be on at 8am, so I set off to World Square where the studio is. I got there and then found out that it was all pre-recorded. I was quite upset but I soon found out the hotel he was rumoured to be at. I got to the hotel and there was no sign of him, just about 20 fans. I waited and waited until Scrappy and Dan came out, said hey and then got into the car. I stayed at that hotel for 10 hours and there was not one sign of the Biebs but we knew he was in there. I left that night and then went to a hotel in the city where my auntie was staying so I could be up early for his Sunrise performance (which I won tickets to). I woke up at 3am on the 18th of July and walked to the International Passager Terminal and waited in line until getting into the show . Everyone was all hyped up and at about 8am Justin came out. He sang acoustic to us and it was the most amazing performance ever! After this I got in a taxi and went to Justin’s hotel. No one was really sure but a lot of police came and they had barriers put up and all, the security was growing and so were the amount of people. At the start there were about 50 and then more and more started to come. We were all standing there waiting and at 12:03  Justin walked out of his hotel, we all tried not to scream but with about 300 people there it was hard. He started on one side and started coming closer and closer to me.  People were pushing but that didn’t stop Justin. He walked to me and I held onto his hand and he grabbed mine back. Because of the crowd, we couldnt take a photo but he looked at me and said hi! This was the most amazing experience. Although I didn’t get a photo of us together, I found one of Justin and I holding hands and in the end, I still met Justin Bieber and I will never forget that day! Is J.Lo Ready To Dump Her Possibly Gay Boy Toy?

Jennifer Lopez Rumored To Be Tiring Of Casper Smart Uh oh, is there trouble in paradise for J.Lo and her young (possibly gay) boo Casper Smart ? The latest from People.com says J.Lo is being short tempered around her lil cougar cub: Her whirlwind romance with Casper Smart began last November as what one source close to the couple told PEOPLE was “a fun fling.” But now, nearly a year later, could Jennifer Lopez be preparing to leave more than just her American Idol gig? “He’s moved into her life – and a little too easily, too,” the source tells PEOPLE. “I think her family is watching him closely.” Lopez’s possible cold front comes amid tabloid reports about Smart: One claims he visited a New York City exotic massage parlor, while another reports he was at a peep show next door. (Photographs show Smart going up a set of stairs that lead to the spa.) Lawyers for the couple call the stories “false, malicious and defamatory.” Those rumors coincided with her 43rd birthday, which they celebrated together in the city. But although they were all smiles as they were photographed heading to lunch, the source says “she’s getting frustrated with him” and she’s increasingly “short-tempered when she’s around him.” This is a departure from the affection they displayed when they hit the town – and, recently, in a steamy music video for her single “Dance Again” (and again in a sweet clip during her current concerts for the song “Baby I Love U”). But as Smart continues to tour with Lopez, a breakup may not be in their near future. “Jennifer is the kind of girl who doesn’t like to be alone,” says the source. “Until she finds a replacement, I think, he’s around.” Can’t say we blame her for having some second thoughts about this. What would you do if your significant other was photographed outside a gay peep show/massage parlor the day before your birthday? INF Photos

I’d given up all hope of meeting Justin Bieber. After school on…

Excerpt from:

I’d given up all hope of meeting Justin Bieber. After school on Tuesday 17 th  of July I was even texted my friend telling her we should get together on Thursday and cry because we weren’t seeing our idol. 5 minutes later she got the call. The call that changed our lives. She called me up soon after and broke the news that she had just won double passes to Justin Bieber’s private concert in Auckland on Thursday 19 th  of July. I could hardly believe it. My mum quickly got flights sorted to fly out on Wednesday night. The next day I was buzzing about going to see my idol in concert to everyone at school. After school, my friend called me up and told me Justin’s flight would be landing 20 minutes after ours. We knew we wouldn’t see him but we wanted to see his crew. 40 or so minutes later she calls me up for a second time telling me Skinny Mobile had just called her again and she had just won Meet and Greet tickets. I was in the middle of the street at the time and everyone was looking at me funny, but what did I care in 24 hours I was going to meet my idol, the boy that changed my life. That night we flew out to Auckland from Wellington. We got in early so we had enough time to get to the international airport. There weren’t many people there when we got there, but Guy from Jono and Ben at Ten was there and I was in the background of their show. We didn’t end up seeing Justin or any of his crew, and went home at 12:30am. The next day we got up early and took the train into the city. We walked up a really steep hill to get to Justin’s hotel. There were a bunch of Beliebers outside the back chanting for Justin to come down. My friend and I stayed for a couple of hours before we decided to leave because nothing was happening. We went to the Skinny meeting place and got ready to head down to the venue. We all walked down Queens Street shouting chants about Bieber. We got to the Cloud (where Justin played in a small room out the back). We waited ages until we got let through the gates. Then we waited even longer to see Justin. Justin before 4:30pm we got let inside the cloud as the rest of the fans went down the side to another door. Me and the 12 others who were at the meet and greet, including two guys were shaking. We saw Moche (Justin’s bodyguard, otherwise known as White Kenny) and he waved to us. Then as we were waiting for to see Justin, we saw Justin’s other body guard Kenny and gave him a hug. Kenny then led us into the meet and greet room. We went in as 4’s to see Justin and my group was the last (@kristieluvzjb (me) @Dare2Dream14 (My friend) @ThatJustinKidd and @BieberAdventure (Other two girls with us). All four of us walked in, stunted. Justin had his arms out for a hug so I was the first to move in and gave him a tight hug around his waist. The other girls then gave him a hug while I was still half on him. He then turned us around for a photo. That’s me on the left right next to him. My ring then got caught in my friend’s hair, who was on the opposite side of Justin. I swore in front of Justin, but not like he cared he just simply replied “It’s all good” and rubbed my back and gave me another hug. We all said “I love you” and “Thank You” and he told us he loved us too. We then walked out and went up the stairs. Breaking out into tears of complete joy, that we had just met our idol. We got to stand at the front for Justin’s concert as the others hadn’t been let in yet. Then everyone came in and I thought I was going to die! There was so much pushing. Justin came out and we had immediate eye contact for a while. I didn’t know what else to do but to stare at him. He started the concert and sung Take You (which was a live debut), ALAYLM, Fall, Thought Of You (also live debut), Die In Your Arms, Catching Feelings, Baby, AATW, OLLG and Boyfriend (Bluesy version). During Baby he touched my hand. The OLLG (One Less Lonely Girl) was standing right next to me and my friend, (@ibieber_heart). Also during OLLG Justin touched my hand and looked me in the eyes. Justin left the stage and Dan (Justin’s gutairst) came over to where I was standing and gave his guitar pick to the girl next to me, but I touched his hand. The show finished and I was actually hyperventilating! It was a dream come true! The next day we went to Justin’s hotel again. We had luck with seeing him as just before he heading to the airport he stopped outside his hotel to greet his fans . They told us that if it got too dangerous they would send him back in, which they did. Justin was only out for 2 minutes before he got mobbed and sent back inside. But it was an amazing two days. Thank you so much to Skinny Mobile, Justin Bieber and my best friend Tikka, for giving me the opportunity to live my dream. Don’t let ANYONE tell you otherwise. You can live your dream. NEVER SAY NEVER and BELIEVE.   -Kristina Follow this link: I’d given up all hope of meeting Justin Bieber. After school on…

Swiss Soccer Player Booted From Olympic Games After Calling South Koreans A “Bunch Of Mongoloids” On Twitter!

Another one bites the dust… Swiss Olympic Soccer Player Sent Home After Racist Tweets About South Koreans Less than one week after after a female Greek Olympian was dismissed from the games, Swiss Soccer Player Michel Morganella was sent packing for racial slurs he used in a tweet after a loss to the South Korean team. Translated from French, Morganella’s tweet said he wanted to beat up South Koreans, that they should “burn” and that they were a “bunch of mongoloids.” Last week, Greek triple jumper Voula Papachristou, a right-wing political supporter, was expelled by Greek athletic officials after she mocked African immigrants. Offensive remarks are in breach of the International Olympic Committee’s code of ethics. In Morganella’s case, he “discriminated against, insulted and violated the dignity” of the South Korean team, as well as the nation’s citizens, Swiss committee chief Gian Gilli said Monday in a statement at a news conference. Morganella later apologized through a statement released by Gilli: The 23-year-old player later released a contrite statement through Swiss Olympic. “I am sincerely sorry for the people of South Korea, for the players, but equally for the Swiss delegation and Swiss football in general. It’s clear that I’m accepting the consequences”. “After the disappointing result and the reaction from Korea that followed, I made a huge error,” Morganella added. Gilli said the player had been “provoked” by comments sent to his Twitter account after the match. Still, the Swiss team leader acknowledged that Morganella had to be sent home under the terms of the International Olympic Committee’s code of conduct, which requires athletes to show mutual respect. “In this case, we felt we have no alternative,” Gilli said. This jerk really has no excuse, especially since everyone already saw that Greek chick kick rocks last week. SMH. Ho Sit Down. Source Source2 WENN
