T he creators behind Napa Valley’s first Black-owned winery estate are continuing to make monumental moves in the wine and spirits industry. According to the Philadelphia Tribune , Brown Estate Vineyards has inked a deal with Delta Air Lines to have its wine collection available on their flights. Delta Airlines is ending Black History Month on a high note. The airline is partnering with Brown Estate Winery, the first black-owned winery Napa Valley. https://t.co/qs4XZ8QxgD — Blavity News (@Blavity) March 1, 2019 The partnership between the airline and the winery is a part of Delta’s effort to take a more inclusive approach in regards to the vendors that the company works with. The brand was introduced to Delta by Carlyne Scott who serves as a member on the company’s Black community business resource group. Initially, Brown Estate’s products were featured on a Delta flight from San Francisco to New York as part of a Black History Month special, but leaders at the airline decided that they wanted to take the partnership further. On Tuesday, Delta announced that Brown Estate wines will become one of their suppliers during the 2019-2020 winter season. The leadership team at Delta is excited to bring the brand on board. “Partnering with innovative, diverse suppliers from certified small-, minority- and women-owned businesses like Brown Estate is fundamental to Delta’s strategy to keep climbing year-round,” Heather Ostis , Vice President of Supply Chain Management, Delta Air Lines, said in a statement. “Seeking employee perspectives and leveraging unique ideas brings us closer to meeting that goal, while creating the highest quality experience for our customers.” Deneen Brown —who founded the company with her siblings 24 years ago and now serves as president of Brown Estate Vineyards—says that this is a major win for her and her family and is excited to partner with Delta. “We are delighted to partner with Delta Air Lines,” said Brown. “Delta’s all-in commitments to the spirit of inclusion and to their wine program are perfectly aligned with our core values at Brown Estate.” Brown Estate Vineyards is not only the first but the only Black-owned winery estate in Napa Valley, California. There is a need for more representation in the wine industry. Research shows that less than 5 percent of wineries in the U.S. are Black-owned. R apper and actor Jaden Smith is on a mission to bring clean water to Flint, Michigan. According to the Detroit Free Press , Smith is using his platform as an avenue for activism and bringing a water filtration system to the city. Jaden Smith's foundation has collaborated with a church to design and engineer a new way to bring cleaner water to Flint, Michigan. https://t.co/N4epKbgIi6 — NBCWashington (@nbcwashington) March 1, 2019 The 20-year-old is leading the effort through his company JUST Goods Inc. The company—which is an eco-friendly natural spring water brand—is joining forces with Flint’s First Trinity Missionary Baptist Church to implement a system called “The Water Box” which can help reduce lead and other toxic chemicals in contaminated water. The Water Boxes are engineered through digital devices. Aside from his passion for the arts, Smith has been a fierce advocate for environmentalism. “I want to have something I can feel good about that I can feel like it’s changing the world. I’m not only being neutral with the world, I’m actually making the world a better place,” he said when asked about his water brand during an interview with Highsnobiety . “That’s when I was like, if I can feel that way, that would be amazing. But then if everybody else could feel that way, that’s a dream come true. I’ve just always wanted to be an advocate of humanity.” The First Trinity Missionary Baptist Church has been dedicated to addressing the water issue in Flint. According to the news outlet, the church has given over 5 million bottles of water to local residents. This isn’t the first time that Smith has led philanthropic efforts in Flint. According to the Huffington Post , last year his company vowed to donate water each month to the city’s schools until the water was safe to drink. Thousands of bottles were donated. Source: georgeclerk / Getty He’s In The Middle Of A Complex Lawsuit With The Institution Of Higher Learning A Black political science professor, who was fired by the City University of New York, is currently tied up in a multi-million dollar federal lawsuit over lost Black history research. According to New York Daily News , Professor Joseph Wilson says decades of lectures, writings, correspondence, books and research, including some that can’t be replaced, was illegally seized by CUNY. The professor says years of research was boxed up and carted away by clueless CUNY security guards without warning in a series of warrant-less raids of his school offices. The drastic actions came after the celebrated professor was accused of enriching himself on the school’s dollar. Over the past several years since the the raids happened, Wilson has been fighting to save his Brooklyn College teaching job. He’s also tried with limited success to track down his items. Some were found tossed into random boxes, others were strewn across school shelves and plastic bags, and other items have completely disappeared. Wilson is seeking unspecified punitive and compensatory damages for his lost work in a lawsuit. He also is demanding CUNY dig up his property or pay him for what was lost. “All I want is justice. What gives people the right, for whatever alleged violations they used to fire me, to trash my history and my intellectual property?” Wilson told the Daily News . “The university has to be held accountable and apologize profusely and profoundly. They made some dastardly errors.” CUNY denies all allegations made against them by Wilson. The school said a neutral arbitrator found Wilson was appropriately terminated due to “serious misconduct” that included taking an additional $100,000 in compensation he wasn’t entitled to over the course of three years. He also allegedly submitted false documents to college officials. “We look forward to a full airing of all of the facts in this case, which clearly show that Mr. Wilson’s claims are without merit,” a spokesman said. “The lawsuit is built on false allegations.” Despite the allegations made by CUNY, Wilson definitely has a strong rep in the academic world. The 67-year-old was a leading expert on the history of Black working class and the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, the first Black union. He’s also enjoyed a long tenured career as a political science professor at Brooklyn College, and he founded the Brooklyn College Center for Diversity and MultiCultural Studies, dedicated to increasing diversity among students, teachers and classroom topics. In 1997, he was also appointed director of the Graduate Center for Worker Education in lower Manhattan. Things took a shift for the downside when the “raid” was carried out at the Worker Educations Center in January 2012. “We were told not to move, that we couldn’t make any phone calls, or leave the office or speak to anyone,” said Wilson. Several months later, the suit says another seizure was carried out on the Brooklyn College campus where Wilson had two offices. Everything was taken, including his letters with poet and fellow teacher Allen Ginsberg , his correspondence with music legend Ray Charles , a transcript and notes on a previously undiscovered speech by Martin Luther King Jr. , and thousands more pages and items. Even his research into a death threat made against Civil Rights and labor organizer A. Philip Randolph (who was mailed a severed human hand) was taken. In addition to all this, Wilson also can’t find the bulk of his 40-year academic research, which independent scholars value at $12 to $14 million. Wilson filed his federal suit in 2017, but the complex case is still underway nearly two years later. For Wilson, the main goal is to recoup as much as his work as possible. He reflected on the experience saying: “I have to tell you, it was traumatic, shattering and world changing what happened, and I never believed that it could and I certainly didn’t think it would happen at CUNY. I amassed an incredible amount of documentary history on Black workers…a treasure trove on some of the great and the unknown civil rights leaders. How it is possible that all this is going to be erased?”

Source: Under Armour / Under Armour The New York Knick’s Dennis Smith Jr . might’ve struck out at the 2019 NBA Slam Dunk Contest, but the hoopers in his old stomping grounds of Fayetteville, NC were still winners at the end of NBA All-Star Weekend. In conjunction with Fayetteville-Cumberland Parks & Recreation, Dennis Smith Jr. and Under Armour went to DSJ’s hometown and treated the city to a carnival-style celebration as part of the unveiling of two refurbished basketball courts at the Smith Recreation Center. Seabrook Park at Smith Recreation Center is where Dennis grew up learning and growing his unique brand of basketball. Countless hours spent on these courts molded Dennis into the athlete he’s become – in his never ending pursuit of getting better. Now, with Under Armour, Dennis has the opportunity to pay it back and pave a way forward for the next generation of Fayetteville dreamers, helping to completely refurbish and revitalize the two courts he grew up playing on. And now he’s made it possible for someone else from his old home to follow in his footsteps and make their way to the NBA. Much props to Dennis Smith Jr, Under Armour and the Fayetteville-Cumberland Parks & Recreation for giving this to the community. Check out pics below. That was when Det. Simonsen was shot. His fellow officers put him in a marked police car and transported him [to the hospital]. Before we even get into the famous faces in the building we have to address the brunch itself. Simon’s food was the type of finger-lickin’ fare that we’re here for. The crab legs, shrimp cocktail, oysters, perfectly cooked salmon with choice herbs and butter, all the fried chicken wings, grits, omelets and fresh fruit you could possibly want. Now that we think of it, considering Rick Ross’ love of exotical food raps, don’t be surprised if you hear some bars about this brunch in the future, but digress. Bravo to Agency 99 who produced the event, as well as Def Jam, Avion Tequila, Defiance Fuel and Code. Source: Malik Galor / Malik Galor Now, let’s talk about attendees because there was some real star power in the building all in support of The Snowman and what he means to the city of Atlanta. Of course the city’s reigning kings T.I. and Ludacris were there along with long-time Atlanta resident Rick Ross. But even those from further north came to salute Snow. The much-discussed Trey Songz, DJ Envy, Casanova, and Mack Wilds all came to enjoy some early afternoon breakfast food and celebrate with Jeezy. Source: Malik Galor / Malik Galor Near the end of the meal Jeezy stood and made a toast to everyone in attendance and the city of Atlanta for bringing so many people together.
