Sports, Race, and Power: How Athletes Are Instrumental to Black America

As much as we appreciate the strides that have been made since the Civil Rights movement in terms of racial equality, there are a few realities that remind us that equality is still a goal. The discrepancy between the number of athletes on the field and the number of Blacks in front office positions is a grand example of how covert discrimination plays out in many corporate environments. Are there seriously not enough Blacks interested in the business end of sports? This is just one of the points that Dr. Thabiti Lewis, a professor at Washington State University in Vancouver, examines in his book “ Ballers of The New School: Race and Sports in America. ” Continued at The Atlanta Post

Adam Lambert Pushes for Change

Recently going on record with how difficult it can be to balance life as an openly gay man with life as a a recording artist, Adam Lambert stopped and combined both worlds this week. Prior to performing “A Change Is Gonna Come” in Los Angeles on Wednesday night, the singer told the crowd: “The thing about the song is, it’s amazing that it was originally intended for civil rights, and ladies and gentlemen, if you haven’t noticed, the gay and lesbian community is in a civil-rights movement right now.” Adam then detailed his own experiences with discrimination before moving into a heartfelt rendition of the single. WaPo’s Eugene Robinson Dismisses MLK Niece Alveda King as ‘Figurehead or Puppet’ of Glenn Beck

Appearing as a guest on Friday’s Countdown show on MSNBC, during a discussion of conservative talker Glenn Beck’s “Restoring Honor” rally, Washington Post columnist Eugene Robinson dismissed Dr. Alveda King – niece of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and former Georgia state representative – as a “figurehead or puppet” of Beck because of her scheduled participation in the rally. And, even though she and her father took part in the Civil Rights Movement and even endured having her home bombed in the 1960s, Robinson went on to suggest that she really is not one of the “keepers of [Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s] legacy” because she is supposedly “estranged from the rest of the King family.” Below is a transcript of the relevant portion of the Friday, August 27, Countdown show on MSNBC: KEITH OLBERMANN: Lastly, Alveda King’s appearance there, Dr. King’s niece and her appearance tomorrow. Is there anything to say about that? EUGENE ROBINSON, WASHINGTON POST: Just that she becomes a very convenient figurehead or puppet or whatever you want to call her for Beck’s view. She’s a fundamentalist, very conservative Christian. That’s how she would describe herself. She’s estranged from the rest of the King family, and from the keepers of his legacy. She has her own, they believe that gay marriage is genocide, and that’s who she is. And so she’ll be there. And they’ll make a whole lot of the fact that an actual relative of Dr. King is there at the march speaking.

Stewart RIPS Glenn Beck’s Civil Rights Rally: ‘I Have A Scheme’ (VIDEO)

“The Daily Show” has a knack for going on vacation when important things happen, so it's nice to see Jon Stewart proactively “report” on Glenn Beck's Aug. 28 civil rights rally on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. In a segment dubbed “I Have A Scheme,” Stewart picked apart Beck's plan to “restore honor” to the republic on the same day and in the same place as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. did exactly 47 years ago. Beck claims not to have realized the coincidence when planning his “Beckapalooza” and Stewart honestly believed him. “Wow, so Glenn Beck didn't realize that was an important day in African-American history?” he asked. “I find that… Totally plausible. I find that totally plausible.” While Beck will not be standing in the same EXACT spot as Dr. King did on that historic day (he'll be standing two flights down) Stewart did take issue with Beck's plan to “reclaim the civil rights movement.” Beck argued that white people can't praise or support the mission of Dr. King without criticism. “Who acts like white people can't praise Martin Luther King?” Stewart said in disbelief. “Or is it that they don't want people who called Barack Obama, the first black president, a racist to praise Martin Luther King?” added by: TimALoftis

New Black Panther Leader: Fox ‘Jews’ Stoking Voter Intimidation Anger

New Black Panther Party leader Samir Shabazz on Monday made an anti-Semitic remark while blaming the Fox News Channel for fanning the fires of discontent over his involvement in voter intimidation back in November 2008. As NewsBusters reported on Election Day that year, two Black Panthers were situated outside a polling station in Philadelphia (video right). This eventually led to complaints by the Bush administration which the Justice Department recently dropped fueling accusations that the charges were dismissed for racial reasons. With this in mind, the Associated Press reported the following Monday (h/t Rusty Weiss): New Black Panther Party leader King Samir Shabazz made the derogatory reference to Fox News during a news conference in Harlem. It was held in response to the U.S. Civil Rights Commission and Texas Republican Rep. Lamar Smith, who recently called for hearings into the Justice Department’s handling of the matter. Samir said the allegations of voter intimidation were false and that he had been caricatured by conservative news organizations, including Fox. “You call me a white hating bigot? Let me tell you who King Samir really is,” he said, describing himself an activist and hip hop artist who spends most of his time caring for his children. “That’s what you don’t hear from Fox Jews, I mean Fox News,” he said. For more racist rantings by Shabazz, watch this: Any questions?

Martin Luther King Was a Trekkie

Star Trek cast member Nichelle Nichols revealed this week that she would have fled the Starship Enterprise after her first season had Martin Luther King Jr. not persuaded her otherwise. At a NAACP fundraiser, the Civil Rights hero told Nichols that “Gene Roddenbery had establish[ed] who [African Americans] were in the 23rd century.” Furthermore, King told her that Star Trek was the only show he permitted his whole family to watch before adding, “You are part of history, and it’s your responsibility, even though it wasn’t your career choice.” [ LAT ]

MSNBC’s Cenk Uygur Assails Hateful Conservatives Who Opposed Women and Blacks

MSNBC News Live guest host Cenk Uygur on Wednesday railed against opposition to gay marriage, asserting that conservatives ” fought against women’s rights and they lost. They fought against civil rights for blacks and they lost .” He also touted the supposed moral superiority of liberals, lecturing, “This country is fundamentally progressive.” [ MP3 audio here.] To bolster this case, Uygur quoted Marting Luther King: “‘Cause as a very smart man once said in the middle of another civil rights battle, ‘The arc of history bends towards justice.'” Yet, liberals hardly have a spotless record when it comes to human rights. In 1972, Jane Fonda famously parroted communist propaganda while sitting on a North Vietnamese anti-aircraft gun. Many progressives have also fawned over the communist murderer Che Guevara . Uygur derided, “And at some point, some conservatives will pretend they were never against [gay marriage] and that they’ve always been for equality for all…We know better. But, all of that will be irrelevant, because in the end there’s only one thing this country does with conservative ideas when they fight against progress, they throw them in the trash bin of history.” Here, Uygur, the host of the liberal radio show The Young Turks , was just being historically sloppy. Ronald Reagan made Martin Luther King’s birthday a holiday. When the historic 1964 Civil Rights Act came up for a vote, a higher percentage of Republicans than Democrats supported the bill. (Republicans were in favor 138 to 34. Democrats supported it 152-96.) Finally, it was Lincoln and later the Radical Republicans who made the progress for civil rights in the 19 th century. A transcript of the August 4 segment, which aired at 3:07pm EDT, follows: CENK UYGUR: Now, look, let’s go to “My Take.” Will there be gay marriage all across the country one day? Of course there will. Hear me now. Quote me later. It is inevitable. ‘Cause as a very smart man once said in the middle of another civil rights battle, “The arc of history bends towards justice.” This country is fundamentally progressive. When our founding fathers started a revolution for the idea of self-rule and democracy, it was arguably the single most progressive act in history. Conservatives fought against women’s rights and they lost. They fought against civil rights for blacks and they lost . They’re fighting against gay rights and they will lose, because this country believes in progress and human rights. That is what it’s absolutely based on. So, we will go through this drama for some time more, but the final act is clear. And then looking back many years from now, Americans will shake their heads and say how could people have possibly thought that? As they say now about people who fought against integration and a woman’s right to vote. How could they have possibly thought that? And at some point, some conservatives will pretend they were never against it and that they’ve always been for equality for all. And some of them might even pretend to be fans of famous gay rights crusaders like Harvey Milk as some now pretend to be big fans of Martin Luther King. We know better, but all of that will be irrelevant, because in the end there’s only one thing that this country does with conservative ideas when they fight against progress, they throw them in the trash bin of history .
