Can ‘Environmentalism’ Ever Really Hope to Tackle Climate Change?

Photo from 1st Earth Day via National Geographic The environmental movement, as most people long understood it, was a broad coalition of individuals, advocacy groups, activists, and others who continually work to address conservation issues and to preserve natural resources; to make sure the environment was given due consideration in business and policy discussions. Inspired by oil spills and out-of-control pollution, the environmental movement was the catalyst for creating the Clean Air and Clean Water Ac… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Effort underway to remove tons of fat from London’s sewers | Raw Story

A team of workers sporting breathing apparatus and carrying shovels has started clearing around 1,000 tonnes of fat from sewers around London's Leicester Square, a water company said Tuesday. Cooking fat being poured down drains under one of the city's main tourist attractions is thought to be causing blockages. Leicester Square borders London's Chinatown and its bustling restaurants and cafes, as well as the West End and Soho entertainment districts. The clean-up, which could take up to two months, is described as the biggest ever of its kind by Thames Water, the firm organising it. Danny Brackley, one of those involved in the clean-up, said they could not even access the sewers at first as they were blocked by a four foot (1.2 metre) thick wall of solid fat. added by: bansheewail

China beating US on green tech

China has overtaken the US for the first time in a league table of investments in low-carbon energy among the G-20, according to a new report by not for profit group the Pew Charitable Trusts published this week. The report found that despite an overall 6.6 per cent global decline in clean energy investments last year, China invested almost twice as much as the United States in clean energy during 2009. Pew blamed the worst financial downturn in over half a century for the reduction in clean techinvestments, but echoed growing confidence in the sector, predicting investments will bounce nback to around $200bn this year. The report, entitled Who's Winning the Clean Energy Race?, said that last year China invested $34.6bn in the clean energy economy, placing it top of the clean energy investment league and well ahead of the US in second place with investment of $18.6bn. Phyllis Cuttino, director of Pew Environment Group's US Global Warming Campaign, criticised the US government for failing to deliver stronger national policies to support renewable energy. “I'm worried that we are going to fall further down the list next year,” she said. “We really need to pass policy.” The US administration has been locked in a year long battle to pass a climate change bill that would impose a national carbon pricing mechanism and introduce new incentives for low carbon projects. However, the bill has faced staunch opposition from Republicans and some Democrats and while a compromise version of the legislation is expected to be unveiled in the next few weeks commentators remain sceptical that the bill can pass this year. The Pew report also expressed concern about America's competitive position in the clean energy marketplace, noting that relative to the size of its economy the US clean energy finance and investments lag behind many of its G20 partners. more at link… added by: WakeUpPeople

Man arrested for asking teen daughter for sex on facebook

A Pennsylvania father has been arrested for allegedly asking his teen daughter for sex over Facebook. John Forehand, 39, (see picture below) referred to himself as “Bad Daddy” in the online correspondence with his 13 year-old daughter, in which he openly propositioned her and made explicit sexual suggestions, say investigators. Lancaster Online reports that, according to the affidavit, Forehand told his daughter he had been having “inappropriate” dreams about her, and wrote to her, “I'll take very good care of my little girl.” According to the criminal complaint, Forehand proposed meeting the girl for sex and explained in graphic detail the sex acts, telling her “not many other fathers and daughters are this brave, so not many of them are so lucky to experience all these pleasures.” Pennsylvania Attorney General Tom Corbett said the girl told her mother about the inappropriate Facebook messages, and she then alerted the police.
