Ho Sit Down: Cornel West Says President Obama Is Nothing More Than A “Republican In Blackface”

When did Cornel West turn into a stunt queen??? Cornel West Calls Obama “Republican In Blackface” Cornel West has made it clear that he feels that President Obama should be more proactive in tackling issues like poverty and the prison-industrial complex. Some African Americans see the professor’s views as divisive, while others say he’s speaking truth to power. Recently in an interview with Democracy Now, West and Tavis Smiley were asked about the president’s priorities, and while Smiley said Americans must encourage the POTUS to be the best he can be, West was much more critical… Via The Root : “I think that it’s morally obscene and spiritually profane to spend $6 billion on an election, $2 billion on a presidential election, and not have any serious discussion—poverty, trade unions being pushed against the wall dealing with stagnating and declining wages when profits are still up and the 1 percent are doing very well, no talk about drones dropping bombs on innocent people. So we end up with such a narrow, truncated political discourse, as the major problems—ecological catastrophe, climate change, global warming. So it’s very sad. I mean, I’m glad there was not a right-wing takeover, but we end up with a Republican, a Rockefeller Republican in blackface, with Barack Obama , so that our struggle with regard to poverty intensifies” … The language that Cornel uses about the President of the United States is inappropriate, disrespectful and not specific with words that will give volunteerism to the needs of the people in this country, and just completely outrageous with poor communication through name-calling. It is hate-speech rhetoric and only displayed by those who have a self-centered interest through the priorities that Cornel appears to voice. Do you agree with Cornel West?

Rick Santorum on Climate Change: Talk to the Plants!

Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum said yesterday that voters can trust his judgment on the environment … and that climate change is baloney. At the Gulf Coast Energy Summit in Biloxi, Mississippi, Santorum basically said that climate change is a liberal myth – in fact, plants are totally doing well! “The dangers of carbon dioxide? Go tell that to a plant, how dangerous carbon dioxide is,” he said. It’s true. Plants eat that stuff up like it’s their job! “I didn’t change as the climate changed,” the ex-U.S. Senator added, seemingly likening Mitt Romney to … the rising global temperatures he denies exist? “I stood tall. Now the climate has changed and everyone’s for drilling now. But please understand that when times were tough, they were not and I was.” In case it wasn’t clear, Santorum said he stands alone in the GOP field as the opposite of President Obama on energy, calling global warming a “hoax.” On Saturday, an op-ed penned by Santorum on RedState (dot) com explained: “The Washington Establishment would rather fight global warming than fight for American jobs … President Obama and his administration have decided to wage war against global warming and thus against the American worker.” “Those living on or near the Gulf Coast in particular know the impact these extreme environmental positions can have on the region’s economy.” What do you think: Is climate change real?

‘Scream 4’: Why Didn’t It Slay The Box Office?

Movie experts weigh in on why Ghostface didn’t scare up impressive returns for the franchise. By Eric Ditzian Courteney Cox in “Scream 4” Photo: Gemma La Mana/ Dimension Films Unlike Indiana Jones and John McClane, Ghostface has not aged particularly well. While Indy’s franchise and McClane’s “Die Hard” films took lengthy breaks from the multiplex and returned with impressive box-office debuts, “Scream 4” got off to a start that fell on the low end of projections. The horror flick’s $19.3 million debut on more than 4,400 screens was, in fact, a major fall from the previous installment in 2000, which Box Office Mojo points out was $52 million when adjusted for ticket-price inflation. While insiders were hardly expecting “Scream 4” to live up to the performance of the original trilogy, the movie nonetheless failed to widely reconnect with moviegoers. So what happened? A combination of factors, according to industry experts, conspired to hold back the film and cast doubt on the idea that the Weinstein Company will be able to launch a fresh “Scream” trilogy. “Part of the reason that ‘Scream 4’ didn’t connect with audiences the way previous installments have is because of the overall climate change of horror films over the last decade,” said Jeff Bock, box-office analyst for Exhibitor Relations. “Whereas grisly deaths, bloodbaths and torture porn were once the order of the day, creepy and spooky — ‘Paranormal Activity,’ ‘Insidious’ — seem to be what horror audiences die for these days.” What’s more, it wasn’t just a matter of failing to link up with horror-movie trends but with broader changes in the entertainment landscape. ” ‘Scream’ was a pop-culture phenomenon of the late ’90s and it lost its relevancy soon after,” said Gitesh Pandya, editor of BoxOfficeGuru.com, pointing to that decade’s often heavily ironic humor. And then there’s a matter of Ghostface himself, a recognizable killer, to be sure, but one who’s by design changeable and thus potentially less iconic than other horror-movie villains. “The fact that Ghostface is a different person from movie to movie is both a good thing and a bad thing,” said Phil Contrino, editor of BoxOffice.com. “It creates suspense, but it also stops the character from becoming as powerful as Freddy Krueger or Michael Myers.” To all these issues add in the generally weak critical assessment, and you’ve got a recipe for a perfectly fine box-office debut but one that’s hardly impressive. While some insiders suspect the weak opening will dash plans to kick-start a new trilogy, others expect overseas ticket sales to compensate for subpar domestic business, increasing the likelihood of “Scream 5” shifting into production down the road. “This could end up grossing $100 million worldwide, which may lead to another sequel or reboot despite its lackluster Stateside debut,” Bock said. “Ghostface will likely terrorize audiences again, because the number-one rule for franchise fright flicks is: You can never keep a horror icon buried for long.” What did you think of “Scream 4”? Obama’s Science Czar Congress is Too Stupid To Understand Climate Change

The rest is here:

John Holdren, the President’s Science Czar has an unusual explanation for why there is no cap and trade legislation coming from congress. It has nothing to do with the fact that the latest research casts grave doubt over the Global Warming theory, nor does it have anything to do with the fact that now many believers in global warming say that man has very little to do with the trend, nope like most… Broadcasting platform : YouTube Source : YID With LID Discovery Date : 31/01/2011 06:11 Number of articles : 2

Obama’s Science Czar Congress is Too Stupid To Understand Climate Change

Eastern Arctic warming trend alarms scientists: “We have dramatic changes taking place”

You might think of scientists as calm and cool. But the first three presenters during the opening session of the three-day ArcticNet conference in Ottawa sounded alarmed by the increasingly visible signs of Arctic warming and the limited amount of money that Canada will spend to understand what’s happening. Ice has cracked up — once in a while taking Nunavut hunters with it. Lakes continue to dry up, while permafrost melts and the tundra is greening, 650 scientists, officials and northerners heard Dec. 15. Observations from the ground in the Eastern Arctic, from places like Iqaluit — where ice in Frobisher Bay is only now forming — and views taken by satellites at 500 kilometres above the earth’s surface showed ArcticNet participants that ice formation in 2010 is abnormally slow. So far this winter, it’s been “very, very slow,” and like last year “very late in freezing up,” said Trudy Wohlleben, an ice forecaster with the Canadian Ice Service. The most “unusual things [are] going on in the winter,” Wohlleben said. Nothing is progressing as it used to, she said, listing a string of peculiar happenings: • air temperatures 20 C above normal at the beginning of the year in the Baffin Island communities of Clyde River and Qikiqtarjuaq; • large ice cracks south of Resolute Bay last January, which caused a hunter to float off on an ice floe; • and other cracks in land-fast ice spreading throughout the High Arctic islands, endangering research stations, causing problems for polar trekkers and swallowing up a Twin Otter. This past spring, ice on Hudson Bay broke up three to four weeks earlier, and the Nares Strait between Ellesmere Island and Greenland, which usually freezes fast from February to July, never froze up solid. This year, looking ahead into 2011, may carry similar surprises, with recent air temperatures 20 C registering above average over the Foxe Basin, Wohlleben said. Weak ice could also lead to more storms as ice cracks cause water temperatures to warm and then lead to even more ice break-up and more storms in a frightening loop. What’s needed is more monitoring with more remote sensing devices like the buoys dropped on ice lands earlier this year, she said. More monitoring of lakes and other fresh waterways also needs to be done, because they’re good indicators of climate change, said Frederick Wrona from the University of Victoria. In the western Arctic he’s seeing lakes slumping into the water, drained lakes and new pools of water forming on the land when permafrost melts. “We have dramatic changes taking place,” with the Arctic becoming a place of rain instead of snow, said Wrona, who predicted that there will be more extreme events like floods in the Arctic’s future. With 60 Arctic lakes slated for study, he’d like to place more buoys in the water to better gauge the changes going on. And more money for Arctic science would also help Greg Henry from the University of British Columbia keep his research project going. Henry, who has been studying vegetation across Canada’s Arctic for the past 20 years, seeing a major portion of this money dry up this year. Henry looked at climate change and tundra vegetation in his six-year “Climate Change Impacts on the Canadian Arctic Tundra” project, which received $8 million in federal International Polar Year funds and support from ArcticNet’s research network. From Kugluktuk to Kangiqsualujjuaq, more than 600 researchers, elders, students and local researchers looked at berry-producing plants, people who live in the North, such as the mountain cranberry (kimminaq), crowberry (paurngaq), blueberry (kigutangirnaq) and the cloudberry (aqpik). Now there’s a group of trained and interested local researchers in place, but the money earmarked for this project has ended and is unlikely to start flowing again until 2017 when a string of research stations— linked to the new Arctic research station in Cambridge Bay— start up. Canada should be spending more money on Arctic science as it did during the International Polar Year. “We should be doing as much as we were getting in IPY,” he said, when Canada set aside $150 million for Arctic research. The good news for Arctic scientists eager to learn more about climate change is that ArcticNet, which funds projects involving about 150 researchers across Canada, can expect to see some more money from the federal government. added by: JanforGore

Rupert Murdoch & The Fox News Climate Conundrum

Photo: mroach , Flickr, CC Yesterday, Matt reported on the rather unsurprising (yet still interesting to view in the light of day) news that Fox ‘journalists’ had been given direct instructions to essentially never report on climate change without offering skeptical talking points as well. Predictably, the green and liberal blogosphere, which loves to hate Fox, went abuzz. The most interesting point to be raised, in my opinion, was just how different… Read the full story on TreeHugger
