Surveillance: Teens Beat Elderly Man, Friend in Cleveland

CLEVELAND – It's an unthinkable crime. Cleveland Police say a group of teens — aged, 15-18 years — pulled a 73-year-old man from his car, then kicked, beat and punched him relentlessly. The vicious assault was caught on a surveillance camera. Sgt. David Rutt of the Cleveland Police Dept. says the teens started attacking after the man and his 51-year-old friend, got angry because the teens were loitering near his house. “There was a group of six to seven juveniles standing in the driveway, blocking their entrance,” said Sgt. Rutt. “The juveniles became more aggressive.” Sgt. Rutt says the men did the right thing, by driving away from the E. 71st St. home in an attempt to get away from mob of angry teens. Police say the men drove down the street to Harpster's Market. The 51-year-old man got out of the car and went inside to call police. According to police, that's when the trouble began. “The juveniles followed them down to the market and while the one man is inside using the phone to call police, the crowd began to taunt the passenger,” said Sgt. Rutt. The teens the pulled the 73-year-old man from his car. First, two teens started kicking him, then the group grew to around six teens, all beating, punching and kicking the elderly man. The mob of teens also attacked the 51-year-old man. Both were hospitalized, one with facial fractures. Cleveland police have arrested four of the teens seen in the video, but they're still looking for two more. Sgt. Rutt says the surveillance video clearly shows the severity of the crime. “You can see on the video you have a large group of young adults basically assaulting two very elderly gentleman.” And although the the attack happened in late March, police are still actively looking for the other two suspects. CO2 has almost nothing to do with global warming, discovers top US meteorologist

Evo Morales: Homosexuality is Caused by Eating Chicken

When Bolivian President Evo Morales took the stage to inaugurate the World People's Summit on Climate Change and the Rights of Mother Earth on Tuesday in Cochabamba, he gave his thousands of politically correct attendees a surprise. Somewhere between appealing for an international climate change court and questioning why the United Nations still uses plastic cups, Morales went after genetically modified foods — by making a comment that some think meant that hormones cause homosexuality. “When we talk about chicken, it's pumped full of female hormones,” Morales said, “and so when men eat this chicken they stray from being men” (tienen desviaciones en su ser como hombres in Spanish, literally). The comment went over non-Spanish speakers' heads and so wasn't until sundown that it had rippled its way through the 10,000-participant gathering. By the next morning, the international press had gotten wind of it, Bolivian newspapers plastered it on their front page and Spain's national LGBT federation had issued a statement calling the comment “homophobic.” added by: UrbanGypsy

Glacier National Park loses two more

BILLINGS, Mont. – Glacier National Park has lost two more of its namesake moving icefields to climate change, which is shrinking the rivers of ice until they grind to a halt, a government researcher said Wednesday. Warmer temperatures have reduced the number of named glaciers in the northwestern Montana park to 25, said Dan Fagre said, an ecologist with the U.S. Geological Survey. He warned many of the rest of the glaciers may be gone by the end of the decade. “It's continual,” Fagre said. “When we're measuring glacier margins, by the time we go home the glacier is already smaller than what we've measured.” The meltoff shows the climate is changing, but does not show exactly what is causing temperatures to go up, Fagre said. The park's glaciers have been slowly melting away since about 1850, when the centuries-long Little Ice Age ended. They once numbered as many as 150, and 37 of those glaciers eventually were named. A glacier needs to be 25 acres to qualify for the title. The two that no longer classify were named the Shepard Glacier and the Miche Wabun Glacier. If a glacier shrinks any smaller, it does not always stop moving right away. A smaller mass of ice on a steep slope would still continue to grind its way through the Rocky Mountains. Fagre led a team that updated a 2005 USGS review of glaciers in the park. Back then, 10 glaciers had been found to have disappeared in recent decades. Local warming cited The USGS work was mentioned in a report released Wednesday by two environmental groups, the Rocky Mountain Climate Organization and the Natural Resources Defense Council. Their report cited data from a weather station inside Glacier National Park that shows the average temperature for the last decade there was 2 degrees Fahrenheit hotter than the station's 1950-1979 average. “That is exactly double the average global temperature increase of 1 degree F in the past decade, again compared to a 1950-1979 baseline,” the groups stated. Fagre's team estimates that in 1850 some 150 glaciers were in the boundaries of today's park. A 2003 study predicted that all remaining park glaciers would vanish by 2030, but the team now states that “their disappearance may occur even sooner, as many of the glaciers have recently retreated faster than their predicted rates.” continued. added by: JanforGore

The sea devours a disputed island – Bangladesh and climate change

The world is changing. Our atmosphere changes and our climate, as a result, does too. But also now, topographically, oru changing climate is beginning to alter our world. For the last few years island nations like the Maldvies have tried to raise awareness of the threat they face because of rising sea levels. And today, user WakeUpPeople clipped this story about global warming and geopolitics: Island disputed by India and Bangladesh has now been claimed by the sea. Map from FP Passport New Moore Island (or South Talpatti), has been disputed for over three decades. Now it's simply no longer there. It's only part of the incredible loss of land seen in the Bay of Bengal over the last few years. Vanguard's Adam Yamaguchi was in Bangladesh three years ago to see how the ocean was literally eating away the country year by year. added by: afitzgerald

Former NYT editor asks the question that ALL real journalists should ask. Why is Fox News considered a legitimate source of news?

Here just an excerpt from Howard Raines ballsy opinion piece from the Washington Post : Why has our profession, through its general silence — or only spasmodic protest — helped Fox legitimize a style of journalism that is dishonest in its intellectual process, untrustworthy in its conclusions and biased in its gestalt? The standard answer is economics, as represented by the collapse of print newspapers and of audience share at CBS, NBC and ABC. Some prominent print journalists are now cheering Rupert Murdoch, the head of News Corp. (which owns the Fox network) for his alleged commitment to print, as evidenced by his willingness to lose money on the New York Post and gamble the overall profitability of his company on the survival of the Wall Street Journal. This is like congratulating museums for preserving antique masterpieces while ignoring their predatory methods of collecting. Why can’t American journalists steeped in the traditional values of their profession be loud and candid about the fact that Murdoch does not belong to our team? His importation of the loose rules of British tabloid journalism, including blatant political alliances, started our slide to quasi-news. His British papers famously promoted Margaret Thatcher’s political career, with the expectation that she would open the nation’s airwaves to Murdoch’s cable channels. Ed Koch once told me he could not have been elected mayor of New York without the boosterism of the New York Post. These are very obvious questions which should have been asked way back when Fox News started blurring the line between news and opinion. You know I do believe that was the day of their premiere. Maybe the real journalists thought that the American people would catch on. That they would not be so easily seduced by salacious stories delivered by large breasted blond women accompanied by state of the art graphics and catchy background music. Apparently these journalists gave their fellow Americans way too much credit. The first time that Fox News definitively demonstrated to the world that they were a propaganda arm of the GOP was during the 2000 election when they helped George Bush steal the election. Since then they have been instrumental in helping George Bush fabricate the lie of WMD’s in Iraq to justify the invasion, made up falsehoods about presidential candidate John Kerry, openly attacked the science behind Climate Change, and are currently working non-stop to put a halt to Obama’s Health Care reform . Nobody, and I mean NOBODY, can seriously call what Fox does “reporting the news”. Personally I think their slogan of “Fair and Balanced” was always supposed to be ironic. I have little doubt it still causes Roger Ailes and Rupert Murdoch to giggle every time they hear it. So far the only cable news (or fake news) people to consistently take Fox News to task has been the amazing Keith Olbermann of MSNBC, Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert of Comedy Central, and of course THIS guy. You know if tomorrow EVERY OTHER news outlet suddenly decided, in unison, to call Fox News out on their bullshit, that audiences all across the world would have their eyes opened and that Fox would lose a huge section of its audience in one fell swoop. I mean if CNN took one of their broadcasts on Global Warming for instance, and pointed out all of the made up data and inconsistencies contained with in it, that would have an impact. And if ABC did the same with their coverage of the health care debate, and NBC revealed the manipulations behind their coverage of elections, and CBS spanked them for misrepresenting poll numbers, just think how quickly people would turn a critical eye toward this “cable news source”. I mean it is not like they are going after a colleague. The people on FOX are not “journalists” they are performers. It would be like if a ballet company called out a strip club for promoting their workers as classically trained dancers. Nobody would accuse the ballet company of being jealous or petty, they would just be pointing out the obvious. But you know they won’t do it. Because they are afraid. They are afraid that Fox New will use its money, and its easily manipulated audience, to attack and punish the other news networks. And they are afraid to stand up to that kind of a backlash. And to that I say, “What a bunch of pussies!” Are the other networks so afraid of losing viewers and sponsors that they would refuse to do their duty to inform the American people that they are the victim of a fraud? They have reported when cars are unsafe to drive, when foods may cause our children to be sickened, and when scams are being perpetrated on the elderly, how is this any different? Sometimes it is important to defy a powerful enemy and take a stand for your profession, for your country, and for the truth. After all being attacked by Fox News is not the end of the world. And I should know.

Cap and Trade no more? ConocoPhillips, BP and Caterpillar pull out of lobby group

Before we explore any deep thoughts about why ConocoPhillips, BP and Caterpillar the U.S. Climate Action Partnership (USCAP) (a coalition of environmental organizations and leading corporations pushing for a cap-and-trade bill to curb emissions of carbon dioxide) we might as well drill down to the basics and remind ourselves about what is Cap and Trade. Amy Goodman explains it as the issue that splits the environmental movement in half. While some say it is a way to tax polluters, generate accountability, and raise money for new technologies, other argue that it gives free permits to big polluters, fake offsets and distraction from what’s really required to tackle the climate crisis. If you want Annie Leonard's explainer video on Cap and Trade, look no further. So here is the break down: The Washington Post reports the reason as: The oil giants also want to do more to promote natural gas, which has become more abundant because of recent developments in the exploitation of shale gas and emits half as much greenhouse gas as coal does. The legislation adopted by the House included benefits for coal producers and coal-fired power plants in an effort to secure the votes of key lawmakers. Many natural gas producers think that more should be done for them. In other words, these companies are turning towards an industry that is under regulated and somehow perceived as “natural” or “environmentally friendly”. However, ask the residents who live near this form of mining natural resources about the state of cancer rates, houses blowing up, and lighting their water on fire, and you will be initiated into the world of Fracking. BP's statement alludes to that they are pulling out in part because of their deep care for the well being of their customers: BP spokesman Ronnie Chappell said, “We think the organization has accomplished what it was intended to do. It has established a broad, principle-based framework for climate-change legislation. With the completion of that blueprint, that work was done.” “We don't think legislation pending in the House or Senate conforms with the blueprint,” he added. “A disproportionate share of the cost burden falls on the transportation sector and consumers. As a result, we're going to miss out on the most cost-effective measures, and misallocation of resources could occur.” ConocaPhilips provided the following insight in their press release: “House climate legislation and Senate proposals to date have disadvantaged the transportation sector and its consumers, left domestic refineries unfairly penalized versus international competition, and ignored the critical role that natural gas can play in reducing GHG emissions,” [CEO Jim] Mulva continued. “We believe greater attention and resources need to be dedicated to reversing these missed opportunities, and our actions today are part of that effort. Addressing these issues will save thousands of American jobs, as well as create new ones.” Kate Kenny, a Caterpillar spokeswoman, said the company wants to focus on carbon capture and storage projects, such as FutureGen, an Illinois plant that is partly financed by the federal government. “We have decided to direct our resources toward the commercialization of technologies that will promote and provide sustainable development and reduce carbon emissions,” she said in an e-mail. After reading several articles on BP's website, major news sources, and conservative energy blogs, I've come to the conclusion that if you aren't on the inside track of this issue you are out of luck if you actually want to understand this manuver. So I asked one of my favorite bloggers on energy, David Roberts of Grist, to put this into context and explain what it isn't being said in the press releases.
