Whitney Houston’s Musical Legacy, By The Numbers

We break down the stunning sales numbers behind the late diva’s record-setting career. By Gil Kaufman Whitney Houston performs at the 1999 Brit Awards Photo: JMEnternational/ RedFerns There had been other explosive young divas before — Aretha Franklin, Tina Turner — but in the 1980s and early 1990s, Whitney Houston seized the spotlight so fast, so early, so young and so forcefully that she set a bar so high singers are still trying to vault it today. The daughter of gospel great Cissy Houston and cousin of “I Say a Little Prayer” singer Dionne Warwick, Houston was discovered as a teenager and burst into the national consciousness in 1985 with her self-titled debut. The seamless mix of wide-screen ballads and dance-floor-worthy anthems spawned such iconic hits as “You Give Good Love,” “Saving All My Love for You,” “The Greatest Love of All” and “How Will I Know.” A radiant breath of fresh air, Houston rode the music-video wave to stardom, scooping up dozens of awards for her smash first album, including two Grammys and an MTV Video Music Award for Best Female Video for “How Will I Know.” Along with Michael Jackson, Houston helped pave the way for a generation of black artists to exploit the video medium to reach a global audience. She did it by spinning off a string of indelible hits in such an joyful manner that her vocal feats of strength appeared effortless. On the eve of the 54th annual Grammy Awards , Houston was found dead Saturday in Los Angeles at age 48. At press time, the cause of death was still unknown. She had last taken the stage Thursday night at a pre-Grammy event on Thursday night. Just hours before the news broke, friend Kelly Price said stories of Houston’s ongoing struggles were exaggerated. CNN reported Saturday night that Jennifer Hudson would participate in a tribute to Houston at Sunday night’s Grammys. Houston died just hours before the start of the annual pre-Grammy party thrown by legendary music impresario Clive Davis, the mogul who signed Houston to Arista Records after seeing her perform in New York clubs in the early 1980s. Though her hitmaking days were long past, Houston’s influence continues today, from the sound of such avowed acolytes as Mariah Carey, Christina Aguilera and Mary J. Blige to an untold number of singers hoping to stake their claim on such reality singing competitions as “American Idol,” “X Factor” and “The Voice.” Houston’s muscular, gospel-tinged vocal gymnastics and her telegenic spark raised the bar to a level today’s singers — from Rihanna to Adele — are still striving to achieve. By the time her career faltered in the 2000s as she struggled with substance abuse , personal drama and vocal issues, Houston had already blazed an unstoppable trail and was ranked by the Guinness Book of World Records as the most celebrated female vocalist of all time, including 26 Grammy nominations and 6 wins, along with sales of more than 170 million albums, singles and videos. Roland Martin to Meet With GLAAD in Wake of CNN Suspension

CNN’s Roland Martin announced last night that he will meet with GLAAD in the wake of his suspension from the network over his “regrettable,” homophobic tweets . Martin was suspended by CNN indefinitely Wednesday afternoon after the controversy surrounding Tweets he fired off during Super Bowl XLVI Sunday evening. Among other things, he said that people should “smack the ish” out of any male fans of a David Beckham underwear commercial. Controversy erupted quickly. CNN, which was also criticized for its delayed response, took three days to respond to the calls by GLAAD and others to fire Martin or to address his tweets. When it did, it called the statements “offensive” and against what the network stands for, adding that Martin would be off the air “for the time being.” Martin did not directly address his suspension Wednesday. But he tweeted two messages to his followers (above) detailing his plans to meet with GLAAD. For its part, GLAAD lauded CNN’s stand on Martin but also welcomed the political analyst’s apology and offers to meet with and work with the group. Does the suspension go far enough? Should Martin be fired?

Roland Martin Suspended By CNN For Offensive Tweets

Roland Martin may have been joking about Super Bowl-related topics with some off-color Tweets Sunday night, but his bosses at CNN definitely didn’t find it funny. The political contributor has been suspended by the network after his remarks – most notably about David Beckham’s H&M underwear ad – were called homophobic. Gay-rights powerhouse GLAAD pushed hard for CNN to fire Martin. That did not happen, but disciplinary sanctions were taken, and his return date is not clear. In a statement, CNN said: “[Martin’s] tweets were regrettable and offensive. Language that demeans is inconsistent with the values and culture of our organization, and is not tolerated.” “We have been giving careful consideration to this matter, and Roland Martin will not be appearing on our air for the time being.” Martin fired off the controversial tweet (above) during the Super Bowl. In another, he wrote, “Who the hell was that New England Patriot they just showed in a head to toe pink suit? Oh, he needs a visit from #teamwhipdatass.” Martin tried to backpedal by issuing an apology Monday. “Based on several tweets I made on my Twitter feed on Super Bowl Sunday yesterday, I have been accused by members of the LGBT community of being supportive of violence against gays and lesbians and bullying,” he wrote. “That is furthest from the truth, and I sincerely regret any offense my words caused.” GLAAD, for one, seems satisfied, saying in a statement: “CNN today took a strong stand against anti-LGBT violence and language that demeans any community.” “Yesterday, Martin also spoke out against anti-LGBT violence.” “We at GLAAD look forward to hearing from CNN and Roland Martin to discuss how we can work together as allies and achieve our common goal of reducing anti-LGBT violence as well as the language that contributes to it.” What do you think? Should Martin have been fired?

8 Foods To Put You In The Mood

Visit link:

If you want to put some sizzle back into your sex life, food can help you set the mood this Valentine’s Day. There’s nothing better than a romantic, home-cooked dinner, featuring some R-rated foods to help turn up the heat. “There’s a growing body of evidence that some of the vitamins and components in foods can enhance sexual function and sexual experience,” says Jennifer R. Berman, MD, director of the Berman Women’s Wellness Center in Beverly Hills, Calif. And if you’re sporting a little extra pudge, incorporating these in-the-mood-foods into a healthy, plant-based diet is one of the best ways to help you get back to your sexy self. If you’re overweight, research shows losing just 10% of your body weight can improve the quality of your sex life, explains Martin Binks, PhD, of the Duke University Diet and Fitness Center. “We find that among overweight women, they bring their negative self-talk and body image issues to the bedroom, and it negatively impacts their sexual well-being.” Here are some of the food ingredients (and my own favorite recipes) that have been major players in aphrodisiac history and lore– and also have modern-day science to help back up their claims. [From CNN Health ] Almonds Topping my of feisty foods, almonds have long been purported to increase passion, act as a sexual stimulant, and aid with fertility. Like asparagus (another one of my favorite sexy foods), almonds are nutrient-dense and rich in several trace minerals that are important for sexual health and reproduction, such as zinc, selenium, and vitamin E. “Zinc helps enhance libido and sexual desire,” says Dr. Berman. “We don’t really understand the mechanisms behind it, but we know it works.” Avocados The Aztecs referred to avocados as, ahem, testicles, because of their physical shape. But the scientific reason why avocados make sense as an aphrodisiac is that they are rich in unsaturated fats and low in saturated fat, making them good for your heart and your arteries. Anything that keeps the heart beating strong helps keep blood flowing to all the right places; in fact, men with underlying heart disease are twice as likely to suffer from erectile dysfunction (ED). Strawberries The color red is known to help stoke the fire: A 2008 study found that men find women sexier if they’re wearing red, as opposed to “cool” colors such as blue or green. Strawberries are also an excellent source of folic acid, a B vitamin that helps ward off birth defects in women and, according to a University of California, Berkley study, may be tied to high sperm counts in men. This Valentine’s Day, try making dark chocolate-dipped strawberries. And while we’re on the subject, there’s a reason we give chocolate on Valentine’s Day: It’s full of libido-boosting methylzanthines. Seafood Despite their slippery and slimy texture, oysters may be the most well-known aphrodisiac. They’re also one of the best sources of libido-boosting zinc. But other types of seafood can also act as aphrodisiacs. Oily fish– like wild salmon and herring– contain omega-3 fatty acids, which are essential for a healthy heart. The Bad Son?? Tracy Morgan Denies That He Won’t Help His Mother Pay $25K To Save Her Soon-To-Be Foreclosed Home

Tracy Morgan denies that he’s a deadbeat son: Tracy Morgan is denying claims that he wouldn’t help his mother pay her mortgage. The media war started after the “30 Rock” actor’s mother, Alicia Walden gave a flurry of interviews about her financial situation, saying she’s facing foreclosure on her Youngstown, Ohio, home. Walden, 61, tells CNN she called her son in January asking for $25,000 to pay off her mortgage, but his assistant called back to say, “Tracy would do a one shot deal of $2,000.” Walden, who says she was laid off from her job in February 2011, told the New York Daily News, “I told her [Morgan’s assistant], ‘Thank you, but no thank you.’ I’m not some person in the street. That was the straw that broke the camel’s back.” Morgan, 43, meanwhile, calls the allegations “untrue,” telling CNN in a statement, “For reasons that are between us, I have not seen my Mother in 11 years and outside of a random call here and there have had little to no contact with my sister. We all have personal family issues that we have to deal with in life, but I choose to deal with mine in private and not through the media.” The comedian’s younger sister, Asia Morgan, has come out swinging too. She confirmed the mortgage story to the Daily News and adds, “He’s [Tracy Morgan] never been a nice person. And money’s just made it worse.” We hope Tracy wouldn’t do his family like that. SMH. Florida’s Young GOP Voters Confident In Mitt Romney

‘He’s a successful businessman, and that’s what we need,’ one supporter tells MTV News. By Gil Kaufman, with reporting by Andrew Jenks Mitt Romney after winning the Florida primary Photo: Joe Raedle/ Getty Images TAMPA, Florida — As you might expect, things were pretty upbeat at the Mitt Romney primary party Tuesday (January 31). With the GOP presidential candidate solidifying his front-runner status following a convincing win over Newt Gingrich, the former Massachusetts Governor’s supporters had high praise as they poured out of the ballroom at the Tampa Convention Center. After following Romney on his bus Monday and speaking with young voters about the potential impact of the controversial new voter-registration laws in Florida , MTV’s Power of 12 wanted to hear what policies and campaign promises drew 18- to 29-year-old voters to cast a vote for Romney and how they think he may be able to help their generation. Hillary Brunner, 19, said she was drawn in by Romney’s stance on immigration policy. “I chose to vote for Mitt Romney because I really like his policy on the DREAM Act,” she said of Romney’s pledge to veto a long-stalled immigration measure that would create a path to citizenship for some undocumented immigrants. “And making it if you want to immigrate to this country you have to go to the military first instead of just going to college. I think the military is a great way to show that you really want to be an American and that you love this country and that you are dedicated to this country.” Her friend, Shelly Mittal, 19, was more drawn to Romney’s character. “I think he has great family and moral values and he possesses a strong attitude towards good business, and I think he can get the economy back toward where it needs to be,” she said. Not only did Romney trounce bitter rival Gingrich by drawing 46 percent of the vote to the former House speaker’s 32 percent, but in a turnabout from the three previous contests, CNN exit polls in Florida showed that he also finally broke through to young voters (18-29). While Romney had reliably scored with older voters, in Florida, he won 39 percent of the youth votes to 26 percent for Congressman Ron Paul, 23 percent for Gingrich and 12 percent for Rick Santorum. One of those twentysomething converts, Dywan Washington, 22, said he believes Romney’s extensive experience in the private business sector could be the remedy for the country’s financial ills. “The key people that we need in Washington, D.C., at any level of government [are] more business people,” Washington said. “We can’t keep going to career politicians who’ve spent 20 to 30 years in D.C. … Governor Romney is a perfect example of executive leadership that we need. … We need executive experience and business experience, and that’s why I support Mitt Romney.” Earlier in the evening, after congratulating his rivals, Romney issued a stern warning to the Democratic Party in his victory speech. Suspecting that the Obama campaign was savoring the vicious infighting among the GOP candidates, he said, “A competitive primary does not divide us; it prepares us. And we will win.” After he and Gingrich (and their SuperPac supporters ) spent more than $20 million on negative ads, Romney took the opportunity Tuesday night to turn his focus away from his competitors and put it squarely on the president: “My leadership will end the Obama era and begin a new era of prosperity.” MTV is on the scene in Florida! Cher: NOT Dead, Despite Twitter Hoax!

Cher is not dead. Not even a little bit. The music legend, 65, became the latest notable name to fall victim to an Internet death hoax when “RIP Cher” became a Twitter trend late Thursday night . The rumor apparently started when a user by the name @Lorraine_Star created a BS tweet that was made to look like a retweet from CNN’s real account. Plenty of regular people and idiot stars alike bought it. The message, likely concocted just so people will buy it, read: “RT @CNN: American recording artist Cher dies at 65 years old. Found dead in Malibu home.” “Did I just hear Cher has passed away? Is this real? OMG,” Kim Kardashian tweeted, never one to sit back and not insert herself into anything trending. Terrible matchmaker Patti Stanger of Millionaire Matchmaker fame was also quick to weigh in: “Is this for real? I don’t see it anywhere. Can’t be!” Kim Kardashian is never one to refrain from Tweeting. Or use spellcheck . While it’s true that Cher hasn’t been active on her Twitter since January 22, her good friend, jewelry designer Loree Rodkin, set the record straight: “Whoever started that stupid rumor needs to have their face dragged across concrete. It’s a hoax. She’s fine. She’s so NOT dead. She’s just a busy girl.” Here’s welcoming Cher – along with recent death hoax survivors Jackie Chan, Justin Bieber, Will Smith, Jim Carrey and Jon Bon Jovi – back from the fake dead!
