Roman Polanski Decision Blasted By L.A. District Attorney

‘I am deeply disappointed that the Swiss authorities denied the request to extradite Roman Polanski,’ Steve Cooley says in a statement. By Kelley L. Carter Roman Polanski in 1980 Photo: Central Press/Getty Images Switzerland’s Ministry of Justice announced that it would not extradite director Roman Polanski to the U.S. to face sentencing for child sex charges, but L.A. district attorney Steve Cooley said Monday (July 12) that extradition will be sought if Polanski is arrested someplace else. “I am deeply disappointed that the Swiss authorities denied the request to extradite Roman Polanski,” Cooley said in a statement released to MTV News. “Our office complied fully with all of the factual and legal requirements of the extradition treaty and requests by the U.S. and Swiss Departments of Justice and State. We will discuss with the Department of Justice the extradition of Roman Polanski if he’s arrested in a cooperative jurisdiction.” CNN reported earlier that the 76-year-old director was set free after his arrest last year; the case has been going on for nearly 35 years. At the time, Polanski pleaded guilty in Los Angeles to having unlawful sex with a 13-year-old girl in 1977 and supplying her with champagne and Quaaludes during a photo shoot, but the director fled to Europe before his sentencing. In exchange for his guilty plea, rape and other charges were dropped at the time. Although Polanski pleaded guilty to the one count of unlawful sexual intercourse, the remaining charges are pending since Polanski was never sentenced. “We only formally request when we are notified by a government that the fugitive is in their country,” Cooley said in the statement. “The request was filed immediately by this office after the Swiss notified us of Polanski’s expected arrival at the Zurich film festival in September 2009.” Cooley adds that countries that won’t release Polanski to the U.S. for sentencing are doing a “disservice to justice and other victims as a whole. To justify their finding to deny extradition on an issue that is unique to California law regarding conditional examination of a potentially unavailable witness is a rejection of the competency of the California courts. The Swiss could not have found a smaller hook on which to hang their hat.”

Roman Polanski Free After Switzerland Rejects Extradition

Oscar-winning director will not be sent to U.S. for sentencing in 1977 child sex case. By Gil Kaufman Roman Polanski in 1980 Photo: Central Press/Getty Images The decades-long legal saga of Oscar-winning filmmaker Roman Polanski took another twist on Monday (July 12), when Switzerland’s Ministry of Justice announced that it would not extradite the director of “The Pianist” to the U.S. to face sentencing for child sex charges. According to CNN , the 76-year-old director was set free after his arrest last year for the nearly 35-year old case, in which he pleaded guilty in Los Angeles to having unlawful sex with a 13-year-old girl in 1977. Polanski admitted to having sex with the underage girl after supplying her with champagne and quaaludes during a photo shoot, but he fled to Europe before his sentencing. In exchange for his guilty plea, rape and other charges were dropped at the time. Polanski had been fighting extradition from Switzerland since his arrest last year, and Justice Minister Eveline Widmer-Schlumpf said the decision by the Swiss authorities was not based on the severity of the charge or whether Polanski was guilty. “It’s not about qualifying the crime,” said Widmer-Schlumpf. “That is not our job. It’s also not about deciding over guilt or innocence.” CNN reported that the American request was rejected because U.S. authorities apparently did not supply all the legal records Switzerland had required and because Polanski had a reasonable right to think he would not be arrested if he visited the country. American authorities can’t apply again to have Polanski extradited from Switzerland, but could try if he’s detained in another country. Polanski fled the U.S. before he was sentenced in the case after learning that the judge might not go through with the short jail term the director expected in exchange for his guilty plea. He has been a fugitive from justice since 1978, mostly living in France before his arrest in Switzerland. The victim in the case, a now-married woman in her 40s named Samantha Geimer, long ago came forward to say she was unhappy with how the criminal case had been handled, but has called for it to be throw out because the airing of the details of the incident causes her harm every time it is re-examined in public.

Roseanne Barr: Republicans ‘Cherish the Freedom to Have Sex with Small Children’

Eccentric comedian and former talk show host Roseanne Barr claimed on her blog July 8 that Republicans are avid kiddie porn viewers who like to have sex with young children. The liberal activist and comedy queen was blogging about sicko children’s author K.P. Bath, who was just slapped with a six years prison term for child porn possession last week. In a item titled ” typical republican child porn consuming geek ,” Barr posted a mug shot of Bath and wrote that he was “a typical republican who loves reagan and palin and despises the ‘nanny state’ and socialism.” “[K. P. Bath] cherishes the freedom to have sex with small children, as all [R]epublicans do,” Barr continued. She then added, in parentheses, “just kidding, sort of.” Barr, who pals around with Michael Moore and Code Pinkers, has become known for scribbling bone-headed political commentary on her personal blog. In April, she blogged that Catholics who take their children to church should lose custody of their kids, and in 2008 she referred to Israel as a “NAZI state.” Despite her nutty, and often grammatically incorrect rantings, some media personalities have still given Barr air time. Last December she was interviewed on the “Joy Behar Show” on CNN Headline News, where she claimed Sarah Palin was a “slave to right-wing men.” She’s also appeared on ” Real Time with Bill Maher ” and ” Jimmy Kimmel Live .”

MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow’s blonde yearbook photo surfaces, America cares

Rachel Maddow holds a doctorate in poltical science. She graduated from Stanford, was the first openly gay American to win the Rhodes scholarship, and became the first openly gay anchor to host a United States prime-time news program in 2008 with MSNBC’s The Rachel Maddow Show. The show is described by Maddow’s website as “[featuring] the top headlines from the worlds of politics, current events, sports, science, health, crime, and the absurd – and interviews with newsmakers like Al Gore, Robert Redford, Edie Falco, John Kerry, Pat Buchanan, Jane Fonda, Seymour Hersh, Tucker Carlson, Roseanne Cash, Lili Taylor, Ben Harper, and Michael Isikoff.” She also likes DC’s lesbian Batwoman. But it isn’t Maddow’s career, her affinity for comic writer Greg Rucka or coverage of and from Afghanistan that’s making waves on the Internet today. No, it’s an old yearbook photo. Maddow, known for her short, brown haircut, used to be blonde. SEE THE PHOTO, READ THE REST at http://blogs.creativeloafing.com/dailyloaf/2010/07/11/msnbcs-rachel-maddows-blon… added by: Ryan_Jent

Children of Bhopal gas victims

Twenty-five years have passed since the world’s worst man-made disaster – Bhopal gas tragedy – occurred. But despite the passage of time the trauma continues for the survivors of that fateful night of Dec 2-3, 1984, when over 40 tonnes of methyl isocyanate (MIC) spewed out of the now defunct Union Carbide’s pesticide plant. Having borne the brunt of neurological, hormonal and mental health problems – besides the economic hardships – the survivors are now faced with the problem of deformed children being born. Kurtz Mimics Olbermann, Cherry Picks Limbaugh to Make Him Look Racist

Howard Kurtz on Sunday used a Keith Olbermann tactic of selectively editing and cherry picking from a Rush Limbaugh radio transcript to make the conservative talk show host look racist. In a “Reliable Sources” segment dealing with the embattled Republican National Committee chairman Michael Steele, Kurtz played a highly-edited clip of statements Limbaugh made Tuesday about this issue. Unfortunately, just as MSNBC’s Olbermann did on his “Countdown” program, Kurtz never told his viewers that Limbaugh was referring specifically to comments that the Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s Cynthia Tucker made on last Sunday’s “This Week” (video follows with transcript and commentary):  HOWARD KURTZ, HOST: Now, Rush Limbaugh also loves to stir controversy by design. And this week, he talked about the president and made a bit of news. Let’s take a listen. (BEGIN AUDIO CLIP) RUSH LIMBAUGH, RADIO TALK SHOW HOST: That’s exactly the same thing you could say about Obama. He wouldn’t have been voted president if he weren’t black. Somebody asked me over the weekend why does somebody earn a lot of money, have a lot of money? I said because he’s black. If Obama weren’t black, he’d be a tour guide in Honolulu or he’d be teaching Saul Alinsky constitutional law or lecturing on it in Chicago. (END AUDIO CLIP) KURTZ: Of course here we are talking about Rush. But did you find those comments to be more than just the usual Limbaugh rhetoric? ROGER SIMON, POLITICO: You mean did I find them to be racist and repugnant? Yes, I found them to be racist and repugnant. KURTZ: Why racist? Can’t a case be made just on part of this that if Obama was a white freshman senator, he wouldn’t have beaten Hillary for the nomination? SIMON: I think anyone who beat Hillary for the nomination had something going for him besides race. And let’s be fair. His race was not going for him. We only said that after he won. He had to win in states where there was almost no black population. If he had lost in Iowa, the first Democratic contest, he would have been through. There are no black people in Iowa. He convinced white people that he really was an agent of change. KURTZ: That’s a good point. Is it, Howard? Let me bring up a better one, like why you didn’t include the context of what Limbaugh said Tuesday. As NewsBusters reported Wednesday, here’s what came IMMEDIATELY BEFORE what Kurtz played for Simon and his viewers: RUSH LIMBAUGH, HOST: Cynthia Tucker, ABC’s This Week, Sunday, roundtable, they discussed Michael Steele. And, by the way, this woman is the editorial director of the Atlanta Urinal and Constipation, and she has been for a long, long time. “Cynthia you once called Michael Steele an affirmative action hire gone bad.” By the way, she can say this because she’s African-American. Here’s what she said. CYNTHIA TUCKER, ATLANTA JOURNAL-CONSTITUTION: Michael Steele is a self-aggrandizing gaffe-prone incompetent who would have been fired a long time ago were he not black. Of course the irony is that he never would have been voted in as chairman of the Republican Party were he not black. LIMBAUGH: Same with Obama. TUCKER: It is very ironic since the Republican — LIMBAUGH: Stop the tape a second. Didn’t you think that was relevant, Howie? Wasn’t it an important piece of information that Limbaugh was specifically talking about what Tucker said concerning Steele and how one could make the same case for Obama? Apparently not, for Kurtz never said one word about what Tucker said last Sunday, nor did he ask his guest if he felt THAT was racist? I wonder why.  To remind readers, this is what Limbaugh was referring to:   JAKE TAPPER, HOST: Cynthia, you once called, let me underline “You” once called Michael Steele an affirmative action hire gone bad. What’s your take on this? CYNTHIA TUCKER, ATLANTA JOURNAL-CONSTITUTION: Well, Michael Steele is a self-aggrandizing, gaffe-prone incompetent who would have been fired a long time ago were he not black. Of course, the irony is that he never would have been voted in as Chairman of the Republican Party were he not black. Let’s remember how the Party wound up with Michael Steele. In November 2008, the Party was devastated that the Democrats had elected the nation’s first black president while the Republican Party was stuck with being seen as largely the party of aging white people, with good reason. A party that was hostile to people of color, especially blacks and Latinos. So the Party needed a new face, preferably a face of color, and they didn’t have very many officials to choose from. So, they came up with Michael Steele. And it is very ironic since the Republicans have been so critical of affirmative action, to watch them stuck with their affirmative action hire that they dare not get rid of because that would generate even more controversy.  Unfortunately, Kurtz didn’t think that was relevant. Sadly, this is EXACTLY what Olbermann did on Tuesday thereby making Kurtz on this occasion no better than one of the most despicable people in television news today. As readers are aware, I have a lot of respect for Kurtz, but this was NOT a banner moment for him — not by a long shot.

Cal: Amanpour Thinks Like Nasr But Too Smart To Tweet It

CNN fired an editor for expressing “a lot” of “respect” for a Hezbollah leader the US had designated a terrorist.  So how has ABC dealt with someone with similar views?  By hiring her and awarding her the prestigious plum of host of This Week. So what’s the difference between Octavia Nasr and Christiane Amanpour?  According to Cal Thomas, little, when it comes to their views.  It’s just that Amanpour is too smart and sophisticated to stick her views on a Tweet. Thomas shared his insight on this weekend’s editon of Fox News Watch. JON SCOTT: A Tweet that cost a reporter her job.  Octavia Nasr was CNN’s senior Middle East editor for 20 years until this week, when learning of the death of a Hezbollah    cleric she decided to share her grief via Twitter, writing there “sad to hear of the passing of Sayyed Mohammad Hussein Fadlallah.  One of Hezbollah’s giants I respect a lot.”  A giant whom she so respected, designated a terrorist by the US Treasury Department. The Tweet immediately became a center of controversy and CNN fired Ms. Nasr. . . . . CAL THOMAS: The dirty little secret here is that she was simply expressing viewpoints that is widespread not only in the American media but much of the Euro media.  If you watch the BBC, for example, as I frequently do when I’m over there, coverage of the Middle East, it is virtually all one-sided, pro-Palestinian, anti-Israel.  Christiane Amanpour holds many of these views as well, I would daresay, but she is smart enough and sophisticated enough not to stick them on a Tweet. Jake Tapper has been drawing widespread praise and solid ratings while serving as This Week guest host.  Is ABC sure it wants to hand the reins over to someone with Amanpour’s ample baggage?

Dobbs Calls MSNBC’s Ratigan ‘Insane and Inane’

In a July 9 post on www.loudobbs.com , Dobbs let fly bashing the staff at his one-time competitor for “two gems that can’t be ignored.” “MSNBC guest anchor Cenk Uygur filled in for the equally insane and inane Dylan Ratigan and pushed the crazy idea that President Obama is a conservative,” he wrote. The video of the segment is all there because Dobbs embedded it from the Media Research Center. Dobbs, who still has a talk radio show, then went on to criticize Uygur’s twisted logic that, Uygur’s words Obama “seems to have bought into the Republican talking point on deficits.” Then he went on criticize “the old-standby, Mr. Tingle Up His Leg Chris Matthews” for saying there are only two camps in the nation – “those who want things to improve and those who want to see the country, and therefore the president, fail.” Dobbs summed it up with a good question: “How can anyone watch this nonsense?” Dobbs, you may recall, was pushed out by CNN for his own opinionated statements that ran counter to lefty orthodoxy on immigration especially.
